If the last case of the game's victim...is Phoenix Wright.
Not only that, but you're defending the accused because Apollo gets the impression that he/she is innocent. Imagine Trucy being filled with grief and hate towards the client, and Apollo growing angry as the prosecution pulls out evidence and testimony that implicates the client.
Even better is if the prosecutor is someone like Edgeworth or Franziska, who has a prior history with Phoenix (Edgeworth trying to get justice for his friend, Franziska trying to get revenge for the death of her 'rival'/out of respect for a worthy foe/some other contrivance I'll make up later). Personal stakes!
Phoenix's body is not found, naturally. They're still looking for him throughout the trial, leaving his status ambiguous and the severity of the trial in flux. Throw in a labyrinthine plot surrounding the defendant AND the murder (coincidentally OR intentionally) that only serves to obscure the culprit, and all sorts of other ambiguities. If you want, bring in old PW characters, though this is not 100% necessary.
The ending, naturally, would have to be epic. If Capcom REALLY wanted to be ballsy about it, they could very well do one thing:

Case 5-1: Crushed Turnabout
Wright & Co. Law Offices are back in full swing. Wright is busy on a case requiring some extensive footwork when Gumshoe shows up, looking for Phoenix's help. Mike Meekins has been killed, and Dick's the prime suspect. Without Phoenix around, Gumshoe is reluctant to trust Apollo, and gives several annoying, "Y'know pal, this is where ol' Wright would check the court record..." type advice. In a turnabout, it's revealed that... Meekins actually died as a result of his own clumsiness. As a twist, it comes out that Prosecutor Payne had arranged for the scene of the crime to be altered to 'get' Gumshoe, in revenge for the numerous losses Payne felt was the result of Gumshoe's incompetence. Gumshoe is acquitted.
- Throwaway lines: Phoenix working with Edgeworth on the case
- References to Maggey
That sounds like a really good case. I'd definetely play if it were ever made.

Kristoph Gavin should be a playable character with a young Apollo as his legal aide possibly taking down notes and stuff. We really need to see what were Apollo's aspirations for becoming a lawyer since we didn't get any of it in his first game.
Have a fan poll on which old character should come back since most fans are still attached to the old characters. The old characters shouldn't dominate the game, but it would nice to have a cameo or 2.
Maybe we can also see an actual magic show by Minuki or even have her as a suspect like Maya in one case.
