At first it was awkward because you could tell 50% of the dialogue was completely altered, but I'll be damned to hell if it didn't grow on me.

The English dub added in more cursery (foul content in general) and altered scripts (as well as severely changing several characters backgrounds).

If you've seen the dubs and STILL think it's made for a "younger audience"....I just don't know what to say.
The altered script was probably done to:
-get the jokes across/have the same humorous effect as the JPN version
-"update" it (anyone have any idea how old this is?)
In any case, it works out great.

well I haven't watched american dubs, but the Indonesian dub is definitely toned down XD it was rather controversial at first, since people thought it's for children and freaked out when they finally know about the contents
The medias were talking a lot about it at that time... WHEN will you guys realize that not all cartoons are for children?!...sorry for the rant XD

I think that sometimes it's good to take source material that will mean nothing to most English-speakers and toss it out the window. The script-writers for American Shin-Chan are obviously geniuses, so I can hardly deny their work just because it's not the same as the Japanese version. Not that I guess there was much debate about that here. ^_^ I'm glad a lot of fans are opening up to dubs more, because they CAN and HAVE been done well in many instances.
