Edits have been made. Thanks Franzise! I also added a few things of my own. As for the whole last name thing, I'll see if I can alter the title to just Iris. If not, is Hawthorne acceptable? Anyway, I'm still looking for feedback (and a beta for this thing if anyone has the time). I won't attempt to post it until I get the go ahead from the people who actively post in this thread (Not to exclude the people who don't post regularly. You are all welcome to edit and add to this thing if you wish, but it would take forever if I had to track down everyone who had posted in this thread to get their approval). On a final note, does anyone have more experience with these Wiki things? I've figured out how to copy and paste this thing, but I'm not sure how to hook up all the links correctly. Any advice would be good or if someone wanted to post this when we're through with it, that would also be good. It doesn't matter who puts it up. Anyway, comments are still desired.
~Phoenix Wright/Iris Hawthrone~
Brief Intro:~Phoenix Wright/Iris Hawthrone~ is the belief that Phoenix Wright and Iris Hawthorne is a couple or friends. The pairing has been gaining popularity since the release of GS3/ Trials & Tribulations in the U.S. According to the canon story line, Phoenix and Iris dated in college while Iris was pretending to be her sister Dahlia for her sister's sake and they fell in love. The relationship stretched over six months and ended abruptly after a failed attempt by Dahlia to kill Phoenix. After Dahlia's intentions and crimes were discovered in court, Dahlia went to jail and Iris decided not to approach Phoenix again, afraid that bringing such a difficult situation up again would cause him more pain. They meet again in the final case of GS3 and, although the existence of a relationship is debatable, many continue to support the pairing based on elements from the games that appear to be continued signs of affection and love.
History:After a chance meeting between Dahlia and Phoenix outside the courthouse, Dahlia uses Phoenix to hide an incriminating piece of evidence (a pendant that had contained poison used by Dahlia in the attempted murder of Diego Armando) by telling him it was a gift of love. To keep her sister from harming Phoenix in an attempt to get the evidence back, Iris disguised herself as her twin and they began to date. Most fans assume that she dyed her hair and wore an outfit given to her by Dahlia. During the six months that they dated, Iris came to realize she had developed strong feelings for Phoenix though those six months are never described in the game.
Finally deciding she could no longer wait for her sister and possibly because she knew of her sister's feelings for Phoenix, Dahlia decided she would poison him without Iris's knowledge. Unfortunately, after overhearing a conversation between Doug Swallow and Phoenix, Dahlia realized that Doug knew too much about her previous activities and decided that she had to kill him first. Though she tried to blame the crime on Phoenix, Mia Fey proved that Dahlia was the killer and Phoenix received a "Not Guilty" verdict. Phoenix was heartbroken that his "Dollie" betrayed him like that, but firmly believed that the one in court was a "fake". Mia scoffed at this, and told Phoenix to get over her. Although he agrees to move on, throughout the game it can be seen that he can never bring himself to let go of his faith in "Dollie."
In Case 3-5, Maya and Pearl are trying to convince Phoenix to go to a place called Hazakura Temple for spiritual training which Phoenix hold firmly against doing until he sees someone resembling Dahlia in a magazine called "Oh! Cult!". They go up there and Phoenix meets with Iris again. Iris recognizes Phoenix immediately although she is quick to hide it for fear that telling him would bring up painful memories best left forgotten and both characters are so shocked by meeting that neither is capable to speak for a period. At night, when Phoenix and Iris meet again, Iris knows Phoenix's last name somehow without his having told her, and when Phoenix asked her how she could know that 5 Psyche-Locks appear (these are mystical locks that only appear when a person is hiding something. They only appear to people holding a Magatama which has been charged with spiritual power. In Phoenix's case, the one he holds was charged by Pearl Fey).
That night, things go very wrong as the mysterious visitor, Elise Deauxnim (who we later discover is actually Misty Fey), is murdered and Iris is arrested as the suspected killer. To make matters worse, Maya Fey, who had been training alone at the Inner Temple, was left isolated on the other side of Dusky Bridge after a stray thunderbolt burned and weakened the bridge. Phoenix attempted to cross the bridge to rescue her anyway, fell through into the Eagle River, and became terribly ill. Unable to leave his hospital bed in his condition, Phoenix asks Edgeworth to defend Iris until he can recover enough to take over himself.
The trial comes to it's conclusion and the truth is found that Elise (Misty) died from a disastrous attempt by herself, Godot, and Iris to stop a plan made by Morgan Fey (The mother of Pearl, Iris, and Dahlia as well as sister to Misty and aunt to Maya) and Dahlia to kill Maya. Although it's discovered that Godot was the murderer, it is found that Iris was guilty of tampering with the scene (also possibly obstruction of justice) and goes to jail temporarily (the time is never specified but considering Adrian Andrews only received about six months for a similar crime in the second game, it is believed by many that Iris's sentence would be similar to Adrian's) for that crime. When the trial ends, Iris confesses everything to Phoenix. She tells him of Dahlia's wanting to kill him from the start, the feelings she had developed for him, and apologizes for all that had happened. "I hope one day you can forgive me... Feenie." After hearing all this, Phoenix is quick to forgive her.
Phoenix is shown visiting her in the credits, but it is unknown how often he visits her.
Other: Some people also note how well the two characters' personalities seem to fit together. Both characters put a great deal of faith in others, have a tendency towards being a bit naive (more obvious in Iris then in Phoenix, but can be clearly seen in both characters), and feel a great desire to protect those they care about.
Proof: As mentioned although the pairing is definitely past canon, most people consider the pairing non-canon post GS3. Many people do continue to ship it based on signs of mutual feelings.
- Phoenix has an incredible amount of faith in his "Dollie" to the point that five years later he still can't believe that she would have tried to kill him or committed all the crimes she is said to have done. Right after the first case in the game where we discover the truth about Dahlia, Phoenix insists that he thinks that woman on the stand is an imposter because his "Dollie" wouldn't act like Dahlia had done in court. The fourth case (which happens during the fifth case, but is played separately) opens with Phoenix looking over a case his mentor, Mia Fey, had tried years before which involved Dahlia's very first crime and still insists that he can't believe that the person in that file is the same woman he loved. When the truth about Iris is finally revealed, Phoenix's final words to Iris are "You really are the person I always thought you were. Even after Dahlia Hawthorne was found guilty... I still believed in you."
- As an old saying goes, the people who hurt us the most are the ones we love the most. Phoenix can't bring himself to let go after Dahlia's conviction despite the fact that the case seems to have resolved neatly with everything in place and even comments in how the things he finds the most unforgivable are poisoning and betrayal (clearly a reference to Dahlia's actions towards him). It is this inability to let go that bring about the fateful meeting that reunites Phoenix and Iris as he only agrees to go to Hazakura Temple after seeing a picture of Iris in a magazine article. Iris too was in a great deal of pain after Dahlia's trial. Not only had she lost him and her sister, but she felt so guilty for the pain that he had been through that she spends the next five years at Hazakura Temple repenting for having been a part of something that hurt him. After the truth comes out, the pain for both characters is relieved after all past wrongs are forgiven.
- Both characters show a great deal of concern for the other's well-being. Iris, worried for his safety in the beginning of the fifth case, Iris gives Phoenix her demon warding hood, giving up the spiritual protection it might offer so that it could protect him instead of her which is particularly important considering how heavily spiritual power is involved in the final case so it would have been an important item to have (It also a notable that at the end of the case Edgeworth comments that when he visited Phoenix in the hospital after falling of a burning bridge into a dangerous river, Phoenix had been wearing Iris's hood which means that he cared enough about it to have it with him at the time of his accident even though he had the opportunity to leave it in his room and that he took an extra effort to hold on to it after he fell as one would think that it would have gotten lost in the violent river had he not. His keeping it with him and wearing it also seems to show a remarkable amount of faith in Iris's words that the hood would protect him). Despite Phoenix's being unable to defend because of his accident, he is quick to send Edgeworth to Iris with his attorney's badge, the demon warding hood (which he seems to have cared for so much but was given up to be used as evidence in Iris's defense), and the magatama (a spiritual item used to see psyche locks) with the hopes that he would defend her temporarily in Phoenix's place. It is notable that Iris's first question to Edgeworth is about Phoenix's condition instead of about her own situation. Only once she is reassured of Phoenix's safety is Iris willing to talk about anything else. Phoenix also checks himself out of the hospital early so that he could conduct the investigation for the second day and defend Iris, despite the fact that he is described as still being sick.
- Both are also so struck to see each other at their first meeting that neither is capable of speaking for several moments which prompts Maya to tease Phoenix about his reaction. While examining certain items at the Inner Temple Maya will say things like "... You've been in kind of a bad mood lately, haven't you, Nick? ...Zvarri! I know what it is! I-R-I-S." and "Oh? About Iris, I bet! Looks like you've been bitten by the love bug, Nick!"
- In the credits, we are also told that during one of his prison visits to see Iris, Phoenix couldn't take his eyes off of Iris.
Other:- Pearl Fey is Iris's half-sister. Years after Iris and her twin sister Dahlia were taken from their home by their father, their mother, Morgan Fey, had another daughter whom she named Pearl. This also makes Maya and Mia Fey Iris's cousins, born to Morgan's younger sister Misty.
- Iris's nickname for Phoenix in college was "Feenie." She also uses it when she reveals who she is to him.
- The pink sweater Phoenix wears in the first case was a gift made by Iris. The "P" on it stands for Phoenix.
- Phoenix called Iris "Dollie" when he presumed Iris was Dahlia.
Apollo Justice Timeline:- Although Iris is not referenced in this game, the majority of the old characters do not get a direct reference. It is vaguely hinted that Phoenix keeps in touch with his old friends. Because the story is told from Apollo's point of view for the most part and Phoenix spends a good deal of time off-screen in which time he could contact his old friends without the player knowing that he had done so, it is believed that he is probably keeps in touch with all his old friends, Iris included particularly since we know he was visiting her after the end of GS3. It is hoped by many fans that Iris will make a return or at least be referenced in GS5.
Notable Supporters?Maya Fey (in game character)- She teases Phoenix about Iris after their first meeting, so it's hard to gauge how serious she was.
Alternate Names:Fans tend to refer to the pairing as either P/I which is derived from the first letter of both characters' names, Feenris which is a mixture of the beginning of Iris's nickname for Phoenix and the end of Iris's name, or NaruAya which is derived from a combination of the characters' Japanese names (Naruhodou and Ayame).
