The music, the atmosphere, the foreshadowing (without really spoiling much)... just great.
Also it was one of the only FMV-ish scene in the GBA versions.

I'm surprised that there are no votes for 1-4, where it looks like Edgeworth has killed someone. Now that was a shocker.
4-1 is quite good as well, I thought. It does a great job of building up an atmosphere.

Start the stab, and split it into two simultaneous killings! And then when you find out on the first day of court that (spoilered) it just makes it cooler xDSecond favorite is 3-5. Murderous statues are win.
But 1-4 definitely gets the biggest WTF. ("Okey, let's see who the murderer i--WTF?!?!")
My 3rd is 4-2, but I really don't like it as much as 1-5 or 3-5. I would've liked it a lot more if they hadn't included the "you die" line... it just interrupted the flow. I think it would've been much more artistic and cooler if they had just left it at "And then... *gunshot*"

I also liked 2-3, but I thought it was kinda short. Which was kinda silly. I mean, if I paid all that money to see the world's greatest magician, I would be kinda pissed if all he did was that one trick...

2-1 was pretty good. Phoenix's nightmare with the demonic-looking judge was great. Not to mention it had a fruitcake of a bad guy intending bodily harm with a fire extinguisher, altogether a frightening, yet hilarious picture.
3-3, while not quite as impressive visually, was still interesting. You're just thrown into what looks like the end of a case, watching Phoenix lose. It was a great build-up.
Honorable mentions go to 4-2 and 4-3.

4-1 has a great atmosphere with the sepia-tinted sketches. Plus, the very first image in the game is something you won't even understand until 4-4.

3-5 sent shivers up my spine as well. I showed that sequence to my dad and he thought it was well written! :3 It also does a good job of bringing vital past cases together for the ultimate conclusion.
4-2, like most people said, was just awesome and had some of the greatest special effects and graphics in the game. I thought that camera angle zooming out with the cars rushing by was really nice. :D
I feel sad that nobody mentioned 4-4. The opeing scene foreshadows and really makes the mood set in. It's almost a 3-5-esque opening.
And I'd also like to mention 3-4, because that opening basically sets up the atmosphere for the whole entire case.
Honorable mentions go to 1-5, 2-1, 2-2, and 3-1.

I think most 'wow'ing opening was 3-5. with that music, shichishito, past scenes flashing, and you see a statue stabbing a dead body with shichishito. Wow. you know you are up to some serious epicness this case.
However, 1-4 gets the 'most shocking' award. It doesn't have much impressive graphics like 3-5 opening does, but the creepy situation and the final screenshot just freaked me out. That edgeworth ranks first among the images in PW in terms of pure impact. (Second goes to Larry's picture at 3-5, which is scary either direction)

That probably would've happened to me if I hadn't played JFA first.
They show you that image after they make it obvious that Edgeworth never did anything. So because of that, the 1-4 opening didn't really have a big impact on me.

That was the exact reason I didn't really like the 4-2 opening xD I mean, with the gunshot and everything it was obvious that death was the answer. I felt like it broke the flow and made it more juveneille(sp?). Plus I thought it would've been awesome if the gunshot represented death, so instead of being "And then...(*gunshot*) you die." it would've been "And then... *gunshot*"
