Martha knew the prosecutor was right. She wouldn't be able to protect Al. She didn't even know what this case was about less than an hour ago. And the prosecution's lounge was the last place anyone would look for him...She felt a twinge of guilt for not being able to help...But then she remembered that the only way for the prosecutor's plan to work was if she proved what he knew. And there was still one way she could help both of them: making sure the right man was arrested. She walked away with more determination than ever. She had to get a 'not guilty' verdict...And to prove Don did it once and for all.

The bailiff made his way to the prosecutor's lounge when he noticed Martha. "Well this makes things easier." He told Martha. "Your 15 minutes is up. Report to Backstage."

He then knocked on the door to the lounge. "Court-given 15 minutes is up. Go to Backstage." He said to the prosecutor in the lounge, assuming Lucias was there.

"Roger that," Lucias said to the bailiff. Then, quickly to Al, he spoke. "I don't understand the entire situation, but I can make you a deal-- I have connections across the country, and can assure that, if you plea insanity, that you can 'disappear' from the public eye, in-lou of the probable death penalty that a regular Guilty would attain you. Just... think about it. Life hidden in a special institution is much better than no life at all."

Preparing to walk away, he turned back to Al. "It's my job to prove you guilty. I can't say anything on whether or not you are the real victim or an actor, but whomever is after you can't get you if you are hidden, out of the state."
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
As Lucias got into position backstage, he carefully munched on his lollipop, now almost gone.
'I wonder just how stacked against me this case is...' He thought. 'and whom the last witnesses keet looking at in the audience.'

The Judge walked past Lucias, making his way directly to his place on stage, instead of waiting backstage. The audience had just begun to file back into the courtroom. The bailiff went beside the Judge, waiting for everyone else to come back in.

Martha went backstage with more determination than before. She was disappointed that she didn't have the chance to talk to Al, but she didn't need to to know that he was innocent. And that was all that mattered to her. Proving his innocence and accusing Don was what she felt she needed to do to save him.

Lucias was thinking hard. Between the obvious suspicion that the man was innocent, and the requirement by law for him not to even consider such a thing, he was rather twisted.

Of course, once he got back on stage, he was going to use every trick in the book to get Martha to lose, but that was just professional courtesy. He awaited the start patiently.

Fewer and fewer people filed in, until everyone was inside. "Is everyone ready?" The bailiff asked.

The audience cheered.

"Court is back in session." The Judge said, as he banged his gavel on his desk.

"The attorneys will now come back to court." The Judge said, signifying to Lucias and Martha to go back to their desks.

Martha went back to her desk, and looked at the prosecutor. She had no clue what to make of him as she waited for him to come out so the trial could continue.

"Right, then." Lucias said, slowly. "While there have been a few recent turns of events to take into consideration, I would prefer if things would resume as they were when we originally were in session."

Taking a crunch at his sucker, he called. "I would like to call the defendant back to the stand."

"Very well." The Judge said, acknowledging the court's request. "Bring in the defendant."

The bailiff nodded, then went backstage, to the prosecutor's lounge, to go get Al.

A couple moments later, Al came to the witness stand, looking as depressed as ever.

Lucias gave Al a short look over, then started.

"You are aware that a murder took place, correct? Would you be willing now to tell us now of the events that transpired up until the alleged time, that being 8:10 PM, on that day?"

No response. Al just stood there. "Al?" The Judge asked. "The prosecution just asked you a question." He told Al.

Still no response.

Lucais shot Martha a look. A look that said 'Goddammit, woman, this is your client so I blame you, now make him talk already!' in not as many words. A look only disrupted in it's venom by the lollipop stick hanging from the prosecutors mouth.

"Please, Al. It's highly important that you say something," Martha said, casting him a slightly pleading look before turning to Mr. Mercad and caught the look in his eye. She cast him a look that said, 'Do you honestly think that I'm the one to blame? I haven't even had the chance to talk to him since the detention center where he didn't tell me very much,' only in a lot fewer words. Then, she turned back to Al, giving him a look that said, 'I promise nobody will hurt you.'

Al did not respond. Nor did he acknowledge any looks in his direction. He just stood there, depressed. The Judge leaned his head on his palm, bored.

"Al? Please say something," Martha said. Then, she looked at the judge. "I'm sure he's still shocked about earlier. Maybe it would be best to call up the other witness and only call this man up if we still need him. Do you agree, Mr. Mercad?"

Lucias sighed. He hated wasting time, and this is what it had turned out to be.
"Very well, then. Just remember that things will only get worse for your client, Miss attorney." The old Lucias had returned, clearly. "Let us call up the next witness-- Bill Palochini to the stand."

I don't think it makes my client look bad. He just learned about how his whole family was killed. How could we expect him to have recovered from that in just half an hour anyway? God, I feel stupid, Martha thought. Bring it, Palochini. I'm ready for you.

Al slowly moped away, as Bill made his way to the stand. Once he got there, he eyed Al off the stage until he went back into the prosecutor's lounge. He then brought his gaze forward, waiting to be questioned about the murder.

Just like with the detective, Bill gave a thumbs-up to someone in the audience.

Was Al...Scared of him? Martha asked herself as Bill took the stand. The thumbs-up sign, to Martha, made him look not quite evil, but cocky and that just made her more determined to find even one slip-up to put him in his place.

Don smiled. Everything was going smoothly for him.

"Mr. Mercad, you may start now." The Judge told Lucias.

Martha smiled as well, knowing that she had one way of extracting the truth from him if all else failed.

"Bill Palochini, waiter for the defendant's family." Bill told the court. "I remember the incident as clear as day. I still feel the burn from when I was pushed back, causing me to smash a plate of hot food toward myself. What a mess it was."

Don nodded, keeping the smile on his face.

"Heheh, wait until I ask you to talk before you tell us all the details, please." Lucias said with a grin. "It ruins the show. Now then, could you please start by telling us what happened at the time of the murder, and where you were during the event?"

"Yes yes." Bill said. "I took the family's order around 7:30, then gave them some water 10 minutes later. The next 20 minutes were spent cooking. Went I went to serve there food, the defendant yelled at his wife (which caused me to jump, dropping a few plates on the ground, one "nice warm" stake on my shirt), then shot his wife and kids." Bill told Lucias. "As soon as he fired the first shot, I immediately ducked."

"So, that means that you saw the shooting at about 8:00, correct?" Martha asked.

The severe appearing redhead in the audience seemed to have spaced off for a while, perhaps in thought... who can tell? She eyed the witness on the stand suspiciously, something felt off about this man... and it bothered her.

Bill started counting with his fingers. "Yeah, 8, that's right." Bill told Martha. He didn't seem to be lying, but Don cringed when Bill made his statement.

Martha was ready to pounce on his mistake, but she decided to play it safe and ask another question first.
"And how long was he yelling before he shot his wife and children?" she asked.

"For a good 10 minutes." Bill told Martha.

Don quietly sighed with relief.

"As the family's waiter, I tried to break up the argument." Bill told Martha. "But they wouldn't stop arguing. Suddenly, the defendant pulled out his gun and shot his wife first. That's when I ducked."

"Out of curiosity, where did you duck too?" Lucias said, piping up. "I mean, he shot his children for simply being there, where would you have been for him not to have noticed you having directly witnessed the murder?"
