Don't look a gift horse in the mouth. XD

It's "something?"

For example, let's say the recent Christopher Nolan Batman films kept going beyond the third film. Suddenly, they release a video game based on something completely original in the Nolan-Batman universe and throughout development, it looks like it sucks, with characters being replaced and the like.

Would you whine then, or would you still say "At least it's something?"

Please, Feeble argument.
First off We're talking about Fan-projects here, Well funded yes, but in no way an official continuation of the canon from the series.
Now, When fans of the series put a lot of effort into a project, why not support it? rather then shooting it down for not literally following "so-called" guidelines.
So the answer is yes.

Well it's not like anyone is rushing to bombard Capcom with negative emails about the musical, we're just discussing what we think about what they've shown us so far. Since most of us on this board do not live in Japan and can't attend the musical and aren't going to pay $50 to $80 for the DVD, our criticism doesn't even have an impact.

Even though I might not like this musical, it will seem pretty interesting.

Phoenix in the play seems to have a good costume, but the hair.............MAKE IT SPIKEY and I would like this musical a lot more. :grey:

Soooooo is this all the characters that are gonna be in the play? Or is there gonna have to be a female Gumshoe? :eh?:

I'm still confused why people are complaining about genders when it's a traditional group that's been around for almost a century, and all male groups have been around for even more centuries. It's like the western world doesn't understand something that was around longer than their country's existance.

Anyway, I'm still interested despite Larry's sex change..

And on the non-spikey hair thing. Have you ever tried running around, sweating, singing and dancing and sweating some more with spikey hair? IT FALLS DOWN. The whole thing was probably because they couldn't keep it in place for long. Hell we had issues with severely gunked out hard as a rock Armstrong hair falling out out of place, and that was a wig. This is theater, not a movie or cosplay where if something falls you can run off stage to fix it...it's a live performance./ That's my guess at least, from experience.

Actually, she said even with a wig they were having a problem. Even the best of wigs will be under the same hot lights, and although not directly connected to the scalp like natural hair, I can imagine that sweat might seap through and could make the style falter depending on how the effect was achieved.

There's an amazing wig technique that involves building a wig around a foam base. Katie Bair (the wig master) has some info about this on her site, and she's done some crazy, gravity-defying things with anime hairdos.

My Phoenix (here) made just a foam cap for his hair and it looks awesome. It's completely rigid (yet slightly flexible, being made of fun foam and hot glue) and has lasted without any problems through several conventions and an all-day outdoor photoshoot, including quite a bit of running around and an on-stage skit contest. I don't think he's ever had to fix it in the middle of a day. Granted, when he took it off at the end of the day, it was filled with sweat (this is someone who sweats a lot), but he rinsed it out with water and it was as good as new.

There are ways to get spikes that won't fall down.

There are many notes of the dissatisfaction...
There are many opinions opposite in Japan, too.
But I want you to understand the Japanese culture "Takarazuka". Takarazuka born in the times of the sexism was an innovative organization in those days. It became the art that women played men. Of course, I think that there is a dissenting opinion for me.

The ticket of the Osaka performance seems to have been sold out momentarily.
Not GS's fan, but enthusiastic fans of Takarazuka would buy it.
Or the purpose of resale. There are people who exhibits them at auction.

I think I get what you're saying, JapaneseGIRL.

I was enthusiastic about this musical at first, but now that I know more about it... let's just say that I switched from being "enthusiastic" to being "highly amused". Needless to say, I'm not going to charter a ticket to Japan just so that I can see this play. On the other hand, if they were to release a recording of the play on DVD, I'd watch that. I'm still interested in seeing how this pans out.

If anything, I'll be wanting some more photographs of that beautiful Edgeworth actress. DO. FUCKING. WANT.

Well, I hadn't been expecting them to make up a completely new character for the musical. But then again, I haven't really been keeping up with the news on it so far, and I don't know much about Takarazuka anyway.

All the actresses look great though, disregarding flat Phoenix hair, which has already been established as Virtually Impossible Due to the Given Circumstances. I bet it'll still be interesting even if it's totally uncanon. I can't say that I'd be able to shell out $50-$80 for a DVD, but I'd like to see it someday anyway [cause seriously, it's a PHOENIX WRIGHT MUSICAL ,GUYS]. Youtube maybe?

I think I recall them twisting a lot in their adaptations of things just for the target of whatever demographic they are after... I do believe that they gave Phantom of the Opera a tad happier ending... (Their best Phantom, by the way, is apparently the actress portraying Edgeworth we see here...)

That's the general feeling I get. This is a show for fans of Takarazuka and not for fans of Phoenix Wright. The absence of several main characters and the inclusion of a love interest makes this very obvious. I'd say that this show's purpose (past making money for the Takarazuka troupe) is to advertise Phoenix Wright to an audience that normally wouldn't have played it. This may or may not work, but I can say that this type of thing does not appeal to the western population.

As a fan, I'd prefer an adaptation that refocused the original story over anything. It could be any media really; manga, a full anime television series, an OVA, or even a television drama. I'd like something that makes games 1 and 3 fit together a lot better. Something with scenes from the first game that refer 3-1, allusions to Godot, and deletions of any case or scene that seemed trivial in the over all picture. It wouldn't have to be the new "canon" but It'd be nice to have something that flows together better than the original series of games.

While the foam based cosplay wigs look really nice, I don't think they'd use them even if they had access to them. Mostly because they don't look enough like the wearer's real hair. Sadly, it seems like the Takarazuka costumes go for realism over accuracy ='/

I'm not mad or anything about the female cast, I get that and all.
I'm just not that fond of the story.
Will this even fit in?
When does it happen?
And although these things are troublesome, Phoenix's hair bothers me the most.
I mean, I won't even be able to understand anything without like, captions ahaha.

I think it's a major part of the storyline, his hair.
The arguments presented are fair and valid, they could of tried a bit harder.

I do like the Edgeworth a lot though.
I think they did a great job with that one.

Okay, really people, this is a topic about the opera's website. Did you even visit it?

Image

Spikes. She has them. The hair is atrocious regardless, but there's still a chance that Phoenix will be the porcupine we know and love on-stage.

Really. There are tons of things about this project that could cause issue with fans, and you guys choose to complain about the lack of spikes in a few promotional photos? Let's just wait and see, okay? There are so many more things relevant to the content of the musical that we could be discussing besides hair.

That photo is old and from the first announcements of the opera. All the pictures people are talking about, which are also on the website, are newer and Phoenix clearly does not have spikey hair.

I didn't realize that that photo was any older than the other promotional photos... sorry about that.

But my point still stands; people are sort of making a mountain out of a molehill with the spikes issue, and if we're going to be discussing the opera here then there are bigger fish to fry than Phoenix's hair.

:nick: Do I really have to guide the conversation for you, or are you intentionally being irreverent?

I don't think the fact that Takarazuka is a troupe of all women is an issue or has ever been an issue, and it's been patiently explained many times that it's a tradition and we should probably move on. Fem-Larry is a legitimate line of discussion, as is the storyline of the musical. This is a big project; I'm sure you can find something to say that isn't about Phoenix's hair. I have nothing more to contribute that I didn't already say in my first post unless we actually start discussing something relevant, and I don't want to do any hand-holding just to keep the conversation going.

Like others have said earlier. With Larry being genderswapped (wow just look at the irony there) this makes the events officially no where near any level of canon. This fact alone seems to make many fans happy in one respect. In another respect people are upset that so many elements have been changed (the actor's gender aside). Naturally people are going to want to talk about these and vent their frustrations. One cannot control whether these frustrations are as trivial as the chosen hair style for the lead actress or something substantial like the retconned plot.

Hey, I think the actresses' hairstyles is a totally relevant and interesting line of discussion!

But I'd rather talk about all the potential GAY that this play could generate. I just hope that there will be a couple of duets between Phoenix and Edgeworth, a few fanservicey photo shoots...

Oh, and I hope that Maya is in the play. She's my favorite female character! I think I'll ship her with Larryona.

I love Edgworth's look though. Looks so elegant and... pretentious. XD While I don't think I'd pay money to see it, it does make me want to watch it, just to see what they do with it.

It's like they put Larry, Dahlia, and Lana in a blender and Mary Sue popped out.

I agree with the Mary Sue bit... but I guess I'll see how she is portrayed before further criticism. Oh wait... I probably wouldn't be able to understand a word about this opera. :payne:

And on other comments, I like the way Edgeworth looks, though his skin should be paler. The whole "spikes" thing, if it can't be done, can they remove the bangs? Somehow the style doesn't scream "Nick" to me.

Now, now, my dear ladies, my dear gentleman.

I do not understand your anger. We all should be happy and jump around or run against walls, since AA became popular enough to make it to a musical! We have so less information and you allready say that it's a bad fanfic. It's not really fair. And why do you actually think, that that wick woman has something to do with Larry, I guess I missed the point.

The hair is sad, but in many ways understandable and in the end those aren't the final pictures, what means that changes are still possible. You've gotta see the good sites! Edgeworth lookes really good, and the wicked woman as well. Besides Edgeworth's and Phoenix's face you can see no trace that they are women! Or do you do so? Maybe I need put on my glasses, I'm not sure!

After giving it some thoughts, I see some similarietes between this musical and case 1-1 and now even understand why you call the wicked woman Larry. Who says that the wicked woman is as pathetic as Larry is? No one. I think the plot may be totally different. And in the end it were women who took the initiative and requestet a musical. Japanese traditions are great! Epic win!

All in all I gotta say "Thumbs up and keep on the good work!"

But I won't buy the DVD for about 80 bucks. Too expensive and I think musicals are only good if you actually see them live. I was in King of the Lions Musical. I guess it has the same effects like drugs - I became addicted. But I can't really tell, since I never took drugs. :)
@Japanese Girl: Your translation is really awesome :D I enjoyed reading and have to thank you very much for providing us with such important info!

And why do you actually think, that that wick woman has something to do with Larry, I guess I missed the point...

...After giving it some thoughts, I see some similarietes between this musical and case 1-1 and now even understand why you call the wicked woman Larry. Who says that the wicked woman is as pathetic as Larry is? No one. I think the plot may be totally different.

Because the summary on the musical site replaced Larry's role in the story with Leona. Originally it was because of Edgeworth and Larry that Phoenix became a lawyer, and now it's saying that it's Edgeworth and this woman. It's not a travesty by any means, but it's re-writing canon (which can be annoying) and for those us that like Larry just fine, it's kind of offputting.

Umm...I think if Lana Skye performed, her name might be Lana.
There is no meaning to change the name to Leona.

Spelling might be "Reona".
There is no distinction between "L" and "R" in Japanese.

Leonaは日本語表記だと「リオーナ/Rioona」に近い発音でしょうが、「レオナ/Reona」と発音する綴りはあるのでしょうか?
Even if it is the pronunciation that is near to "リオーナ/Rioona" when Leona is Japanese notation, will there be I pronounce, being spelled with "レオナ/Reona" ?

I think she meant it as that they might be sisters, and that there could be something like Lana's and Ema's relationship.

Mia is gone? ;_;
Or maybe it's Le[i]ona, offspring of Mia and Lana, and Larry's AU twin sister!

The insanity just increases. This had better not in any way be considered canon...

I'm so relieved that Maya's in this! Thank you JapaneseGIRL :edgy:

I think that the actress for Gumshoe was well-chosen... I think we were all a bit iffy on the prospect of a woman playing Gumshoe in a musical, but I think she'd make a good female Gumshoe in the right costume.

I'm also excited for Lotta and the Butz; I'm sort of surprised that they're even there. But they both have qualities that add a certain 'pizazz' to the cases they're involved in, so hopefully they'll spice things up.

I wonder what the story is for all of the new characters... there seems to be a lot. I really hope that Monica and Leona don't end up being like Ema and Lana. But I might just be looking at this from the wrong angle; Leona could be aiming for a guilty verdict with a motive more similar to Ron's than to Lana's, and not be a Lana rip-off at all. She could be trying to avoid being convicted of another crime, which would give her some murky depths as opposed to her becoming some sort of angelic Mary Sue do-gooder figure by protecting someone else (ie Monica).
