Quickly going over the profiles on the main site, I was quite pleased to find out that Edgeworth has a dog. But since the dog doesn't actually appear in any of the games, it's up to us fans to create a realistic animal companion for Miles (mostly because I'm bored in the middle of Design class).

The current theory, as far as I can gather, is that Pess (Jap: Pesu) is a Shiba Inu, which, as far as I'm concerned, is a totally random (yet somehow suitable) decision. So, to be discussed: Why is Pess a Shiba, how does it match Edgeworth's personality, and what other breeds would be logical for him to own?

As my first contribution, I happened to Google "pesu dog" and it came up with this. I believe that Pess is a robot.

I'm going the theory that Pess is a Collie. Thats seems more Edgey then a Shiba to me =/ Despite being japanese he spent a good portion of his life in the states, and that seems to influence him alot more then his native culture. But thats just how I see it :P

I understand the reasoning behind a Shiba Inu. I really do.

But sometimes I like to ponder what other sorts of dogs he might have. It all depends on what your headcanon of Edgeworth is--I know a lot of people put him in an apartment, but I fancy him having a decent house with a decent yard just on that line riding between open space and downtown. So obviously he's going to have more room in my headcanon for a bigger dog than someone who thinks he lives in an apartment. And I think he would like a bigger dog; something that can sit around with him and that won't be dangerously underfoot. I'm not talking mastiff-sized big, but... you know, a fairly good size of dog. Shiba Inus run on the too-small end of the spectrum, for me. :/

I also like the idea of him having a dog that is somewhat elegant, but quite able to throw down if it so chooses. I imagine it would be a little quirky-looking. Intelligent and trainable, for sure--I can't see him putting up with a furniture-chewing thing from Planet Witless.

Maybe something that he could take along if he ever did something Von Karmaishly old school like hunting birds and such? That bit I'm not sure about yet. Some kind of useful dog that serves a purpose other than declaring one's wealth, anyhow. Not prone to shedding massive amounts of hair all over, either; too fastidious a personality for that. Quietish but still protective, too, and something that likes company but is perfectly fine with being alone for stretches of time.

Have been slowly whittling it down over the last week or two. I'm sure I'll figure out what I think for sure by the time a few more days go by.

I actually don't really understand why Pess is considered a Shiba (other then maybe because Missile is one, and the only dog in the PW world that we atually see, a correlation of sorts was made); but I don't really either, because they're quite cute x3

However, I don't think he is one, because Pess was described being a "large dog". Some people have suggested a collie, so that's what he is in my fandom; I think a collie's elegence (and fluffiness) fits Edgeworth well.

lolz, this topic is kinda ironic, cause I just draw a picture of him a little while ago x3
I draw, see?

I love this piece of fanart so much and it seems to fit in this topic. I'm pretty sure its supposed to be Phoenix being dragged by Missle with Pess standing obediently at Mile's side. I can't seem to picture Pess any other way now.

After roughly six hours of research and reading in the dog books part of the library yesterday, lots of listing and crossing-out of things, I have decided that--for my stories, anyhow--Pess is a Rhodesian Ridgeback. (And he has NOT had her since early childhood. As far as I'm concerned, during GS1, she's actually still fairly young. 3 or 4 years old, perhaps.)

An unusual choice, probably, and I know people might say this or that about one or two aspects of them--but I have my reasons. :)

...Well, my first thought was "the Rhodesian Ridgeback doesn't seem to have much hair." I'm so used to seeing Edgeworth drawn with an adorable ball of hyperactive fluff that it's pretty much engraved into my head.

And then I caught this picture on GoogleImage and was convinced that's the perfect dog for him. How did you find that breed, Poison?

Spoiler: WALL OF FASCINATING TEXT APPROACHES
Well, I found this book upstairs that is a basic rundown of every main AKC-type breed--their temperament, how they are with kids, how long they live, how active they are, etc. But more importantly, it also listed what type of dog each person was or was not for based on a number of factors.

So first I took what I'd written down here in my earlier post. Based on function, form, and size, I decided he probably had a working or houndish dog of sorts and immediately crossed out the toys, spaniels, and terriers.

Next was to look for a dog that did not require huge amounts of time spent grooming and/or did not shed excessively--so things like the Afghan Hound and the Komondor and all that went out the window, leaving short-coats and dogs with long fur that wouldn't shed much.

Size of home and personality came next. I figure he has a house, as I said, and a fair enough yard, which meant I had a little leeway as far as keeping the dog entertained while he was gone during the day. It also meant I needed a dog that could happily be quiet and contained and amiable inside, but still content and able to play and goof off and maybe go jogging outside with him. And those seem to be difficult characteristics to find in combination; a lot of workers/hounds are noisy/attention-grabbing/want all the space in the world. (Salukis left at this point.)

By this point, the list was getting really short, so I looked at their physical appearance and struck out anything that looked silly or didn't have an interesting appeal. By this point, it left Black and Tan Coonhound, Greyhound, Rhodesians, Greater Swiss Mountain Dogs, Canaan Dog, Finnish Spitz, and Borzois.

Greyhounds disappeared because they need more time and space than he has, I forget why I left off Canaans and the GSMs but I remember having a very good reason, the Finnish Spitz is too damned noisy, and Borzois still too high-maintenance.

After picking up breed-specific books for the Black and Tan Coonhound and the Ridgeback, I spent the next few hours reading and eventually decided on the latter.

Besides everything else they met--they are insanely attached to one specific person in life over all others. They are extremely intelligent and challenging but rewarding to train. They're a suitable size and live long enough. They're very clever about who is actually a dangerous person and who is not (something I think he would value even more after the mess with Von Karma), and are not prone to unnecessary barking--that is, they generally only bark at things that may prove a real threat, instead of every little bird at the window.

The dog can be cold or irritable to strangers until it's proven that they're someone to like, but still enjoys socializing. It loves to be around its people but doesn't go insane demanding all sorts of attention (although attention is very nice). Loves having a 'job' to do and will throw itself into it. Can be stubborn, and generally very healthy, and will eat its food with no complaints about anything. And of course, that funny stripe of fur down their back that I think would amuse him in some strange way. Plus, they were originally bred to help hunt lions, and I think that would appeal to him as well.

And there you go. :)

I haven't forgotten abouth this thread! I just got my exam exemption in Design class, so I'm free to goof off now.

That said, I've been looking at dog breeds trying to find one for Edgeworth. Admittedly I haven't been looking very hard, but I have it narrowed down to two types, and I have one representative dog from each type.

The first dog up is a Whippet, which I call an 'Edgeworth dog'. I chose it because it's temperament matches his personality well, and for some reason I can imagine Edgeworth owning a racing dog.

The second dog is a Nova Scotia Duck-Tolling Retriever, which I call a 'Phoenix dog'. It's temperament is closer to Phoenix's personality than Edgeworth's, but/therefore is very compatable IMO. I'm biased, I know, because my dog is a duck-toller, but since I have first-hand experience I know how Phoenix-like she can be.

I'm done for now; Design class is almost over.

Edit
In other news: Edgeworth loves Pesu more than court.

Wait! Gil wants to put in her own two cents!

I can't imagine Edgeworth actually going and getting a dog of his own volition. You'll notice that all the people he's really close with came to him more from circumstances than him reaching out for them--like Gumshoe, one of the only "friend"-types he has, who he only knows because they cooperate for his job. Therefore, I imagine that Edgeworth found Pess unintentionally. I like the idea that Pess is a mutt that Edgeworth wound up finding hurt and feeling responsible for. He takes Pess to a vet and he and the dog hit it off, and Pess is welcomed into Edgey's home.

Maybe I should just put this in the profile :B

The reason I have Shiba Inu on the site is because when I joined the fandom, someone who had been there longer than me said that's what he was, and showed me a picture of a Shiba Inu with a bib on it that said Pesu (a photo, not a fanart. I think it's a reference to a real comedian's dog or something... I don't remember). Unfortunately I don't have that picture anymore and can't go back to confirm, but that's why it's on there.

Well first off, *steals Gil's two cents*, cos they're shiny. :redd:

And I don't think Pess ever got any sort of mention in the games. He (she?) was just something that was mentioned in passing by the people who made the games, I believe, but the mere concept has caught the eyes of a lot of fans.

I believe the concept of Pess/Pesu was that the creator implied in an interview that Edgeworth had a Shiba Inu dog. So its more of a fandom thing than a canon thing. However its been so widely spread in art and fiction that most people consider Pess/Pesu canon~

I say an Akita. He likes Big dogs, and it's Japanese, but bigger than a Shiba Inu, and seen as vicious in a way Edgeworth would have empathised with ['Demon' Prosecutor'].

Actually, Akita Inu reminds me of Missile. They have the same color fur and pattern. Maybe the Police have a small Akita Inu.

In the case of my fan fiction, Pess is a black Eurasier. I recall reading a tiny amount about dog breeds in order to choose one for Miles, and though I've forgotten the details, I had my reasons for making Pess a Eurasier.

I had to look that one up :-P I guess a Eurasier sort of matches his personality...

Which sort of brings up a point. Are we thinking of Pess as matching Edgeworth's personality or simply being compatible with it?

What traits do Edgeworth possess that a dog might also possess? What traits might a dog possess that would blend well with Edgeworth's personality? What sort of traits in a pet do you guys think Edgeworth would be attracted to?

Ok, so, I may have been a bit short (I was only around 5-6 when he died ;_; ) so I remember him being really big XD

No, it's not. It was stated--possibly joked, as the profile says--by one of the creators that Edgey has a "large" dog named Pesu (AKA Pess). Fans picked up on it. So I guess you could say he's more fanon than anything else.

As for Pesu's breed...I dunno much about dogs, so I haven't the slightest.

Pess is a totally a Pit Bull, because Edgeworth is totally hardcore like that. :karate:

On a more serious note, I can see Pess as a scruffy brown dog with a swishy tail. Kinda like an oversized Benji? If he were a small dog though, Pess would totally be a Pom. I can't get the image out of my head of Edgeworth with a froofy little ball of fluff. :redd:
