For those of you who are new, the current downloadable version of Case 3 is currently titled "Part 1: White as Snow", with "Part 2: Master of Puppets" coming soon. This will be changed accordingly as Case 3 is its own case. Apologies for any confusion.

The Contempt of Court is COMPLETE!
FULL GAME DOWNLOAD

The download link is for the full game. You shouldn't need the game already installed, everything should be there. Feel free to overwrite the entire PW - The Contempt of Court folder if you already have one -- should work just as well. There's a txt file with details on how to start at Part 2 if you want. But a couple of changes have been made to Part 1, which should become apparent in Part 2.

NOTE: Vincenzo's voice clips are somehow missing from the above release. They can be downloaded HERE, to be placed in the default SFX folder.

A walkthrough for Case 4 Part 2 can be found here in this spoiler tag:

Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney - The Contempt of Court
For nearly a month after the events of Trials and Tribulations, Phoenix Wright hasn't had a single case. Suddenly he is thrust into a string of them, starting with the murder of Marvin Grossberg. Over time Phoenix discovers something more secretive and sinister underlying this string of seemingly random murders. With the addition of an intimidating new prosecutor and a sarcastic slacker of a detective, Phoenix unwittingly stumbles upon a series of killings that somebody doesn't want solved, secrets that somebody doesn't want uncovered, people that somebody doesn't want to talk -- somebody who is pulling all the strings of an elaborate behind-the-scenes conspiracy for vengeance, power and control...

This fangame consists of four cases:
Case 1: Turnabout Scapegoat
Case 2: The Haunted Turnabout
Case 3: Turnabout of the Snow
Case 4: The Ensnared Turnabout

Fuandon has made a Let's Play on YouTube of Turnabout Scapegoat, The Haunted Turnabout and Turnabout of the Snow.

Story (Case 1 spoilers)
Two people are killed at the prison. One suspect is Detective Snow, the other is inmate Vex Vulper. Although unwilling to deal with Vulper again, Phoenix defends Snow and takes on both cases.

The day after Vex Vulper is sentenced to death, Phoenix receives a call from an unknown man who, after an unsettling conversation, gives him an address. Deciding to track down the address rather than ignore the odd call, Phoenix discovers a murder scene under investigation. But what changes his mind and drives him to take on the case isn't just the unexpected defendant... it's the even more unexpected victim.

Desperate to get to the bottom of whoever's responsible for this shocking crime, Phoenix defends his client and pursues the truth - a truth that originated five years ago. And after a series of strange events that tie directly to the murders of Perry Docks and Cedric Maplethorpe, Phoenix begins to wonder if he and the court have been making a terrible mistake all along.

Meanwhile, somebody is in control. Somebody is pulling all the strings, commanding the knowing and manipulating the unaware. Somebody has been behind everything all this time...

Wow, nice progress! The new characters look great. The smily face on the outline is too funny. At least he was happy when he died...

Just thought I'd declare a little bug I've noticed with my demo.

When you examine anything on Verglas Bridge BEFORE you present the affidavit to Jake Marshall, the big button can't be clicked for some bizarre reason.

A way around this is to press enter instead of clicking.

A way to fix it is to "Move" back to Wright & Co. Law Offices and move back to Verglas Bridge. The button should be unfroze.

Downloading it right now. You can expect a full review in a few hours.

The screens look great, so I'm a bit excited, yet anxious at the same time.

In any case, I'm extremely flattered to learn that Turnabout Substitution inspired you for this project. It was one of my hopes that my game could encourage other creators in their efforts.
(Though I am concerned about the "showing how to use PyWright" bit. My scripts are terrible, and the only way they can be used as a teaching tool is by showing how not to do stuff.)

It's at 35% now. Can't wait to play it!

Ahh, what I meant by "showing how to use PyWright" was that I looked at your script files to learn how to use it. Like templates that informed me what to do, where to put it, etc. If that made sense.

Played through the demo myself now, and it was pretty good!

The story is good so far, and the swaps between the past and present suggest this'll be an interesting case, I think I'm most looking forward to what this village will actually be like.
Similarly, the dialogue was of good quality and Maya, Phoenix and Marshall were all in character. My only real complaint with dialogue is that I felt that Snow's gimmick didn't work especially well. Sarcasm is fairly hard to get right in a purely dialogue based format.

I have to applaud you for your sprite and graphic work as well, especially for a solo project. The sprites, although fairly simple, had a lot of character, and you've used an interesting combination of sprites in your work. Some of the screenshots were very good as well, particularly the one of Snow and "Mr. X".

In terms of what could be improved, I think that some of the sprites themselves could do with a bit of recolouring to make them fit in with the original sprites better. Some of the sprites have lines which are much too dark, and some of them have parts which are too light (like the lapels on the "5 years ago" defendant's jacket). There's not much to improve in terms of the demo, the clicking/enter problem was the only major problem I noticed, and the sprites were mostly running smoothly (the constant blinking problem was noticeably absent).

So yes, overall It was a good demo, and I'm looking forward to the finished version/ next part.

Well first of all, thank you tremendously for the praise! :gant:

Ah yes, I see what you mean with Snow. You're absolutely right: sarcasm IS difficult to put into text. I tried putting them with bored, fed-up animations to try and strengthen them but... ah well, I'll see what I can do in the final release.

As for the dark outlines... well, most of the original sprites I've seen DO have dark outlines, so I thought I'd try to mimic them. You mentioned the lines on Brisbane's lapels too... I never noticed, so I'll look into it.

The way I got round that "constant blinking" problem was I made the character GIFs on Gickr.com, with the "Normal" speed. They animate really slowly on their own, but in the game they speed up, so it looks like they're in normal speed. I'll go into adding more animations for them too.

On the whole, thanks for your feedback and I'm glad you enjoyed it!

Is double posting strictly necessary? Edit: I was referring to the posts before Nose's.

Anyway, I've finished the demo.
It's... very good. Very promising.

- Graphics: The intro is splendid. In general, the graphic resources (evidence, close-ups, photos, artwork...) look great (I wish I could have resources like that for Turnabout Substitution... pictures > boring exposition). The quality of the sprites varies from incredible (Snow) to mediocre (Vincenzo). They are all animated, which is a huge plus. Oh, and something completely unrelated: I'm probably going to have nightmares because of your "testphoto".

- Sound & special effects: Great use of sfxs and special effects (it's more complicated to get these little details right than people think) - they're as AA-like as they can be. Good choice of music (CADENZA!), although at times the timing is odd (for instance, the fact that there is no music at all before Maya appears the first time, and still none when she does appear, makes you think something is lacking in the scene). Where did you get Snow's theme from? I liked it ^^

- Gameplay: It's obvious you know how to use PyWright, both for investigation and court phases. Almost everything works the way it should. It's also the first time Psyche-locks are handled this well in a fangame.
Just a few small things:
* usually, in Wright & Co Law Offices, you can also examine the movie poster and the "difficult-looking legal books"
* I think you should be able to examine the bridge at the crime scene
* when you present something to Snow and he says "oh, aren't you sharp", he doesn't appear on the screen, and there is no nametag either
* "Affidavit from Detective Snow" is too long a name for a piece of evidence
* when you examine a spot at the crime scene for the second time, there should be no "X added to the Court Record", since it's already been added. See scene7 of TS as an example.
More importantly: where is scene6? I got a bug after I broke Snow's psyche-lock (I must've been clicking on the Court Record too many times)... Apparently, there was supposed to be a scene where you interrogated the defendant before Vincenzo's trial, but I couldn't find it. As a result, I had to jump directly to scene7a1. What did I miss?

- Plot: A good mystery so far. You're good at raising questions (who is the mysterious man we meet at the crime scene? And what's with all these cards?), which is the only thing that really matters at this point: if you raise some questions, the players are going to want the answer. The fact that there are two intersecting storylines makes everything more interesting.
Spoiler:
Vincenzo totally did it, because he calls Grossberg "sir" .

- Dialogue: Rather funny, enjoyable, and AA-like most of the time. Jake Marshall's almost perfect. Some awkward lines here and there, but they're easily counterbalanced by great moments, such as when Phoenix is zapping, or - even though it won't be in the final version - the end.

- Characters:
* returning characters: Phoenix, Maya, and Jake Marshall are all perfectly in-character.
* OCs: I love the new detective. The prosecutor also is not bad, if a bit exaggerated. The others haven't really had the time to shine yet, so it's too early to tell for them.

Overall, it's one of the finest AA fangames released so far, with the potential to be at the top of the competition once it's completed.

I'll be looking forward to the next release!
Are you planning to make several demos, or will you directly release the final version?

First things first: about the "double post"; sorry, I was in a rush.

Now onto the review:
Woah, that's... long! :udgy:
Not that it's a problem! I'm really grateful you've taken the time to write a long review; it shows you're appreciating it! Thank you!

Hmmm, I see where you're coming from when you say Vincenzo's sprite quality is mediocre... I tried to draw him with Phoenix as a template. I think his "young-normal" sprite is the least detailed. I'll try to fix up all sprites when the final release comes.

Ah dammit, that "testphoto"... I forgot it was still in there!
It's a screenshot from "Gmod", a totally random example for testing the "examine photos in court" concept (which is what I was doing with it). Note to everyone reading this: delete it; it has no purpose. :payne:

Snow's theme is "Big Time", the Season Mode theme from the PS1 game "WWF SmackDown!" ... so no, it's in no way related to Snow's personality; I just liked the sound of it! XD

Ah, you noticed the missing Snow when he says "Oh, aren't you sharp." The reason being: the sprite emotion that was set for that line was meant to be the "thinking" emotion; I renamed it recently to "thinking", so the emotion the game's trying to look for is nonexistent.

I apologise for the "missing scene"... I was going to include another scene before the "5 years earlier" trial. I decided on retrospect to head straight to scene7... I never realised I skipped a whole number! So no, you haven't missed a sixth scene... because there wasn't one; scene7a1 should've been scene6! So it's this sequence of events (in order):

1. Break Snow's Psyche-Locks.
2. Talk to him again about "The Associate"
3. Move to the Detention Center
4. The "5 years earlier" message should come up, proceeding a small intro by Vincenzo.
5. Court Lobby.
6. The trial.

Hope that cleared things up.

I tried my best to match the original character's personalities. For Jake Marshall, I even looked up loads of Old West slang on Google!

As for the other points, I've noticed them myself upon playing it back, and these will hopefully be fixed by time of the project's completion. Once again, a HUGE (and I cannot emphasise Huge enough) thank you for your review! I hope I won't disappoint by the time of the completion! (Which, to answer your final question, I don't know at the moment. If I take too long in making it, I wouldn't want to make you all wait, so the next release may be another demo. Who knows, really? :yuusaku: )

I can't wait to play this. It looks amazing!

Your signature is funny too lol.

Congratulations on putting out a demo, I know that can be a lot of work. I was surprised to see this pop out of nowhere.

And to saluk: thanks very much, now you mention it it did kinda appear out of nowhere.
I know I say thank you a bit too much, but I always want to show my appreciation for each and every post from everyone! It's you guys who give me the drive to carry on making this fangame! :redd:

Ah... a little announcement about the oncoming second part.

It's going to take a little longer than anticipated, because I accidentally deleted the file that holds Titus Krump's entire testimony!
I'm just kicking myself.

For development I really recommend something like svn. On windows there is tortoisesvn which is a pretty simple interface. It does take a while to learn how it all works, but is absolutely invaluable for projects of any length. You can do things like delete whole sections of code, without having to remember how to get the old code back if you need to.

There is also tortoisehg which I have been using recently, it's even easier to get started (you can just right click any directory to turn it into a repository) but some of the documentation and terminology are more confusing.

Conversely, I have found that often my second take on something I have accidentally lost is a bit better than the first version. Hopefully that happens here :)

Ugh, I've forgotten to save on enough AAO trials to know what's that like XD

At least it'll probably be even better next time ;)

NOTE

I am about 3/4 of the way through Vincenzo's Trial, but I'm stuck for what to do next and I'd really appreciate some of your opinions on this...

It's at the point now where Vincenzo has exposed the killer, who has yet to take the stand and testify. But I'm not sure whether I should, at this point:

1 - Continue the trial, or;
2 - Head back to the present day with Phoenix and Maya for a bit, then continue with the "5 year ago" trial a bit later on.

Glad you're progressing so fast, at this rate you could have the 1st fully completed fangame on either of the major casemakers.

But anyway, I'd probably go back to the present at that point. It'll allow tension to build up as the player will be left wondering whether Vincenzo wins or not, and it'll allow the story to be more segmented. I find it more effective finding out things bit by bit rather than all in a huge chunk.

Well it'll be fairly slow because of its size anyway.

You mean upload it with a different site to MegaUpload?

Part 2 is now up.

I could've concentrated on the dialogue more, and improved Vincenzo's zoom animations (he resembles Phoenix too much), but those'll hopefully be fixed and tuned for the third (and final?) part.

Again, nice job. The plot is shaping up nicely, and although some of twists seem incredibly obvious, there's still a lot of mystery in the air. Sadly, I didn't play through much of the updated demo (no.1) because I have such a low attention span, so I just skipped to the court sequence.

In terms of the whole demo, I was slightly unimpressed with the first part of Vincenzo's case.
Spoiler: 2nd demo
My main complaint is that Rex being the murdererer just seemed really out of the blue and random. Vincenzo's reasoning is that his reactions showed him up, but there seemed to be little difference between his reactions and that of the average AA prosecutor. If there'd been some subtle foreshadowing (like with Kristoph knowing the colour of the card-backs in 4-1) it might have worked better.
Another problem I had was with Rex's involvment. The fact that how Rex found out about the card or was at the bridge is never adressed until right at the end is irritating. It just comes across as a massive plot hole until Vincenzo talks about it at the end, and even then you'd have thought that Vincenzo would have wondered about it or Rex would have used the point to defend himself during the trial.

That said, I felt that everything after that was fine. There seems to be some interesting twists around the corner, with the secret room in the mansion and Mia's lack of talk about Vincenzo both being highly suspicious.

I'm looking forward to seeing what this Mr. X is like in court as well.

In terms of errors, and non-story things I feel could be changed...
Spoiler:
Titus's normal animation could do with fixing, the top of his cravat moves with his mouth.
Rex's breakdown uses the flashing screen effect a bit too much, it makes the breakdown hard to see and it's not great on the eyes. Perhaps you should mix in a bit of the shaking effect.
Flashbacks aren't in black and white, there's nothing to differentiate between the past and present.
The people at the side of the court are the audience, the jury isn't around at this point in the timeline. (great use of a manga page here, might I say)
Vague fault- examining for a while in the mansion's second room somehow sent me "back in time" into the first room with Maya and Titus back, luckily the 3rd text option still worked so I was able to get back into the game.

But yeah, overall I still enjoyed it. Looking forward to the next part.

Thanks for playing and your comments, Nose.

Spoiler:
What you said was the truth: the further I continued with Vex Vulper's involvement with the crime, the more difficult it became to tie it all together cleanly. In the end, it was a bit all out-of-the-blue and so on. I think I learned my lesson that I need to plan the story first instead of doing it as I go along. I'll consider this more carefully in future.

Ah, the reason I rarely use the shaking effect is because when initiated, the text continues scrolling AFTER it rather than DURING it.

EDIT: The next release may be very delayed, since, taking into consideration what you said about the plot hole, I'll need to properly think it through. :payne:

If you have any ideas, I'd be more than happy to hear. That goes for everyone else reading this too.

I've finally gotten time to play this, and the sheer level of polish is wonderful! I'm writing up a long list of comments/bug report data, and will post it when I'm done.

I wish I'd played this before we released Checkmate and Turnabout - there's a thing or two you did that I'd like to imitate, especially when it comes to introduction style.

Ah, stealth editing, it's a very polite way of posting, but in the end is kind of futile, people usually won't look at threads marked read on the whole so often miss this kind of thing. So yeah, feel free to post when you have updates, it may help drum up some more interest in the game.

More on topic, the new box art is really good, Mr. X looks almost official. The background's a bit boring, but at least it's better looking than AAI's horrible purple background.
Liked the updated profiles as well, it's always interesting to see the creative processes of this kind of thing.

So good luck with finishing the case and glad you're still working on it.

Yeah, I'm progressing quite slowly these days. Just that I'm distracted a lot, but it's far from over. There haven't really been updates worth posting a new reply about, just little things here and there.
