Maybe it's just coincidence but I've never seen bots do 18-rated stuff until recently.
Then again bots are sent out in waves by the same people aren't they? Based on how often ones advertising X brand shoes or something pop up.

I typically see the bots with the porn links too, but there were a couple of them that posted some bordering-on-nsfw pics.

I 'could', but until I get an idea on how to block spambot images, while 'not' blocking images from first time posting artists, and people with first scoops on news, I'd rather keep the status quo.

My goal is to make it impossible for the spambots to get a foothold, while not causing harm to new users. That last part is key.

Speaking of this why is there a star trek theme anyway?

Just cause? Just seems random seeing as there's generally some reason behind the others, though Maya looks awesome as.....er....that girl (can't remember her name) but she's dead on for it.

Why'd I do a Duddly Do Right one? Or even the Disco one? Sometimes, "Because I felt like it" is a justification of its own. And I hadn't done a "Because I felt like it" in a long time I felt like it.

But, I will say, Star Trek the Next Generation was my favorite show growing up. And it colored my expectations of Sci-Fi from there on out. Imagine my disappointment in Star Wars, Babalon 5, and the like for having a militant rather then imaginative/explorative premise. What's the point in doing something futuristic in space if you're just going to drag our present along with it?

But yes, Diana Troi makes an appropriate Mia Fey... or vice versa.

Probably a stupid question, but why are the bots more prominent now than they were, say, a year ago? There weren't many mods or such to my knowledge lurking around on the boards then either.
On April 3, 2016, Court Records Forums experienced a miracle upon that day.

Hey guys I want a second opinion on this one.
While I believe it is a bot it does have some human qualities and while banning bots is good I don't want any doubt to it to avoid harming an innocent.

Oweida

This Oweida fellow HAS a picture related to AA, granted it looks like one pulled from the gallery however. In addition his name makes...some degree of sense in that it's not a jumble of random letters and numbers (though some of our human members forgoe this anyway). Then something that surprises me, he has a custom title which makes sense. It's a coherent regular sentence and considering the display picture maybe it is intended as a subtitle for Edgeworth's embarrassment?

However his posts have been about new Game reviews and for some reason Sega console history in places where they aren't required (such as
introduction threads). Additionally his signature contains links for the purchase of various gaming products.

A crazy part of my mind is going "Hey what if someone paid a human to advertise to avoid all the incredibly obvious tells of bots!" but really it could just be a smart bot. I want you guys' opinion before this guy gets the boot or not.

It wasn't relevant and it was incoherent even if it was related to gaming. I ban hammered it.

It was unnerving to me as well I must admit. Having an avatar and yapping about gaming was the closest yet a spam bot has given me pause.

It doesn't give me good hopes for the future.

Hey could just be a one off.

Part of me is going "Mwahahaha the bot-owners realise the challenge CR presents to them and is trying to step up their game" indicative of our good efforts to fight them off. Still if this one failed nothing to stop us doing it to more in future.

The fact is the bots in the end will want to advertise somewhere, that means there must be some kind of link (either in their posts or signature) and it may not always be coherent (some fail to use BBcode correctly resulting in absurd, yet identifiable links). It gave this guy away. It's still one major tell in bots.

Yeah, the bot owners likely are stepping up their game. Most aren't obvious bots by themselves, but with some, you start noticing patterns. For instance, some have pretty much the same name with a couple letters difference, with all matching or nearly matching profiles and custom titles. I've even seen some that don't have the same name, but the same name format with matching profile/custom title.

To give an example of the former, seeing this guy and his band of merry clones mixed in with other members makes me want to go, "Yeah... just give me a reason." (But I suppose there's always that small chance that this is the most scatterbrained user ever :P)

Then there are the bots with the custom titles with random phrasing that doesn't make any sense. Of course, I wouldn't want to ban one based on an odd title, but when you start seeing multiple users with the same title or the same pattern of title, it starts looking suspicious.

Say, Wooster, out of curiosity, I don't suppose you guys do occasional mass bans? Or is it one of those things where it would be far less of a hassle to just let sleeping bots lie?

Before the ban hammer I used to go through the member list and sort via join date. And then I'd start premptive bannings if the accounts matched the patterns you mentioned. I'd also look at the birthday list and start banning based on the oldest member going down.

But there was more then one occasion where I'd go to ban someone for matching the pattern, and then seeing that they had 103 posts or so. I'd then stop because obviously no one would tolerate 103 posts from a spammer.

I'd say if you guys want, go for it. But I'll say I suffered a lot of burn out. It became a daily trip to CR, not to participate, but to play wack-a-bot. But the advantage now is that with the ban hammer, with the built in IP ban, it becomes one less avenue of attack they can use. I wouldn't guess how many IPs they have. But I'd think we're hitting a sore spot if they're changing their game.

To give an idea of scale, that's about a page and a quarter of moderator logs. We haven't had a streak like that since the banning was being done by staff.

Hmm. Either I miss count or Adrian in Black's been busy. I now count 48 ex-spam bots today from her.

And. I was curious myself so I checked the database. We've banned 1,822 IPs. So the question becomes, how many IPs do our spammers own? And what percent of which have we eliminated?

Hehe.

I don't know if it's doing anything for more recent bots, but at least the patterns make them obvious. There sure are a lot of "male" members into selling Ban Plz handbags, Chanel, and cheap Oakley sunglasses. (Not that there's anything wrong with that... unless you're a bot. Or a persistent peddler without a clue.)

Interesting.

memberlist.php?mode=viewprofile&u=19359

Is this a bot? Is this not a bot?

If it is not a bot, then my deepest apologies for my suspicions.

If it is a bot, it cannot be ban-hammered, as it did not end up in the newly registered users group. I don't know if there is a reason for this, but it is possible to ban-hammer bots even older than this user.

Hmm. It is a bot. (And I've since ban hammered it myself). But in order for the non-poster to be qualified as a newly registered, it has to have been created after Croik and I put restrictions up for new members. Not quite sure what the deal is though regarding older members being bannable. But if you run into more troubles I can change how 'new users' are detected.

You qualify as a ban hammerer. You need to be using either the Anniversary or the Star Trek theme (I traditionally don't update old themes, I'd go mad keeping up with them)

Then you find a bot and visit the profile. If it passes the safety net (IE, you can't ban long standing participating members), you'll see a [Ban Hammer] link near the avatar. Click, and you'll be prompted to make sure you know what you're doing, since this will delete the account, all the posts, and IP ban all at once. And then the bot is disapoofed.

This is a very weird coincidence. I was curious how effective the ban hammer has been since it's been open to the public. It's been in service for non-mods for 52 days. Since then 2,712 spam bots have been found and destroyed. To put that into perspective that's 52 spambots sniped a day. (What a weird coincidence)

So, in 52 days, 52 spambots were ban-hammered each of those days. Credit for the high score mostly is due to the proactive efforts of Adrian in Black, who's not only keeping up with the bots as they show up, but killing the sleeper bots as well. But that's not to belittle the rest of the crew here who's ban hammered one of those making incoherent topics.

Nah, I'm glad they're around. With upcoming changes in my schedule, I'm not really sure how much longer I'll have the luxury of being proactive.

And truthfully, I've found it a sort of catharsis after a shitty few weeks at work. And after a while, you pick up on certain patterns, certain keywords...and some bots even slip up and give the same contact info.

Yeah I'm not as proactive as to ban 'unconscious bots' feels cruel since some of them don't do so much as have a link offsite. Still it's fun destroying bots. Used to report a bunch of them in the past when it got really bad but it was irritating seeing them remain. There's a real satisfaction with forcibly removing the offending topic/posts of the bots.
