I like this thread <3 English is my first language and I also speak German, French and a little Italian. I'm at the point in German now where sometimes I think in German then have to translate it back to English- it's a bit confuzzling. Part of a dream I had the other night was in German too... but I digress. Generally speaking, I just find languages pretty awesome and I can't wait to be totally fluent in all the ones I'm studying :edgy:

well, mah first languadge is Russian (even though I live in Ukraine.) second one is obviously Ukrainian. As a slovanian, I can easily understand Bielorussian and Moldovian. I also know Polish wery well. I even plan to move in Poland in future. Well, I won't mention English, 'cuz it's quite obvious. Well, I also know Finnish and German on a beginner level. Like, I can speak with people (and even sometimes understand them) and say something. And the last two in the list are Latin and Latish.
By the way, my German teacher was Gothic and Sacred games, my Polish teacher was youtube, who showed me videos of polish gothic movie-makers, and my English teacher were all the games I ever played in English.

I can fully understand and read Slovenian but I'm not good at writing or speaking it (usually pronouncing things the wrong way).
I had French for about 3 years at school but I almost forgot everything, although I never was really any good in it anyway. The only phrases which I can still remember are "Je m'appelle...", "J'habit a..." and "Je suis trés fatiguée."

I can mostly understand Croatian and only a few words which are Russian, Polish or Serbian, for they sounding or being almost the same like in Slovenian. I know some Latin but just because I'm going to a medical and biological specialized school [e.g. when a word ends with -itis, it's usually an inflammation (Tonsillitis, Bronchitis, Endocarditis etc.)]

Oh and I know a few Greek (swear) words because some Greek dude at my old workplace was swearing a lot. (Malaka = idiot)

I should start learning Croatian, Russian and Polish!

I speak Finnish (duh, I'm from Finland xD) and a bit of Swedish. Even though Finland is officially bilingual, I never learned to speak Swedish. :'D It's the primary language in some areas only, and I live in an all-Finnish area... :/ Always have.
We do study it in school from the 7th grade (from age... 13?) but our teacher was quite... incompetent. Our lessons were something like:

"Oooh, *something Swedish ramble none of us understood* and now then, I will give you this list of words that I made just for you, and I want you to read these words. If the word sounds like a nice word... Draw a flower next to it. :edgy: If you don't like the word, draw an angry face next to it. :edgeworth:"

...Seriously?

Jag kan inte tala Svenska. Punkt slut.

But my English is pretty fluent, I think.

Teehee! Small world! I'm also from former yugoslavia! I can speak it, but I still have some troubles. (I was raised in Canada, so that's my excuse)

You mentioned you couldn't read/write in cyrillics but you can read latinici right?

silhouette wrote:
Conjugation is the bane of my life - which is funny, because Serbian has the most difficult conjugation of any language I've encountered so far, and conjugating in Serbian is second nature to me.

Ahhh you're so lucky (or smart?) . I have so much troubles with padez it's not even funny. Worst of all, there aren't even any rules for it. If you ask anyone they're just like "you have to memorise it." OTL Like, they can explain the 7 conjugations-- but they can't tell you WHAT THEY ARE. I always mess it up. :(

I also speak english and french (fairly well, though not fluently. But I am in advanced French for my age heh)

If you don't mind me asking, what province (in Canada) do you live in? In my city there is a large population of Serbians, so I think you might live in my province heehee.

I can't read it in the latin alphabet fluently in the latin alphabet either. I was never taught it. However, someone once mentioned to me that Serbian is written exactly like it sounds, so I can read some things, if the words are small. The accents bother me.
To be sure, if someone gave me a sentence like:

Svaki dan idem u školu.

I'll know how to read it... it says, 'every day I go to school'.
I don't know. It all depends on how simple the words are.
Also, since Croatian is pretty much the same as Serbian, I guess I can speak that too?

I live in Ontario. Do you too?

I know incredibly small amounts of French and German, basically what my brain didn't manage to forget since school, and I know some basic Japanese; like half a textbooks worth of grammar plus quite a lot more nouns and general terms. I can also read katakana and hiragana and a handful of kanji. I noticed someone is saying that their "hovercraft is full of eels" in their custom title by their avatar as I scrolled down this page! (Though it took me a while to get "hovercraft" from "hobaacurafuto" since I'd never seen it written before).

It's an ongoing process with the Japanese, I doubt I'll ever return to French and German (English is close enough to them that I can wring some understanding out of basic stuff written in either language, enough to get by in those countries as a tourist at least).

All Slavic languages seem to be pretty similar. I remember when I was little, I even haven't notice the difference between Russian and Ukrainian. I can understand about 20% of any Slavic language now.

Hmmm, almost the same like in Slovenian :D

Vsak dan grem v šolo.

another option is:

Jaz grem vsak(i) dan v šolo. (I go every day to school.) <= that's how I would say it

Although, you can say "idem" instead of "grem" too, it has the same meaning.

----------------------------

and yes, Slavic languages are quite similar but that's actually a big advantage for us :]

The differences between the two "ch" sounds are the end of me I swear. I think BCS (Bosno-Croat-Serbian is now the official name orz) in the latin alphabet it is the easiest to read language. Every letter will always sound the same no matter what. If I could ever remember the cyrillics then it would probably be the same but I'm used to latin letters.

Yeah, it's pretty much the same except for few differences. For example, in Serbian if you ask a question you'd say "Da li mi pomozes?" or something (I'm not that well with phrasing things in different dialects) but in Croation the word order would be changed to "Pomozes li mi?" or something, heh.

Ah, I live in BC. The area of Vancouver I live in is like Serbian central. The ONE place in town where the whites outnumber the asians. And it's mostly Serbians and Russians.

err... UP you made a few mistakes, but I could understand it! I'm sure you wouldn't appreciate me correcting your work, heh. Of course, the language is still fresh in my mind.

Translation time! Although I haven't taken french since June...

"I speak a little French, but it's been 2 years since I learned it in college.
In July I went to France for 2 weeks. I find that speaking the language is easy enough, but understanding it is very difficult. The people speak (should be spoke?) very quickly to me. I aksed for a golf club, and I did it well. The problem came when the assistant responded. I didn't understand a word she said.

The end."

That was fun.
