Final Fantasy 1 - It's the first one. Play it and beat if you even consider yourself a fan.
Final Fantasy 2 - Didn't really do much for me, pretty generic storyline that doesn't seem to go anywhere. Havn't finished.
Final Fantasy 3 - See: Final Fantasy 2.
Final Fantasy 4 - Fantastic story, great characters, a definite play for any fan.
Final Fantasy 5 - Have never even booted this one up.
Final Fantasy 6 - By far and away the best Final Fantasy in the books. Amazing story, great characters, great pacing, and some absolutely never-forgettable video game moments.
Final Fantasy 7 - Good game, terrible characters other than Sephiroth (who thanks to fanboys has become extremely overrated, as Kefka absolutely annhilates Sephiroth). This game is worth beating, but it isn't even in the top 5 Final Fantasys ever.
Final Fantasy 8 - Good characters, but by the third disk, I couldn't have been more bored.
Final Fantasy 9 - Great characters, beautiful visuals, fantastic development, the game was semi-short, i.e. it knew when to end. One of the best.
Final Fantasy 10 - The best characters in the Final Fantasy universe, outstanding story (that didn't need a sequel), voice acting brought living breathing life to these characters. The 2nd best.
Final Fantasy 11 - As a fan of MMOs, don't bother.
Final Fantasy 12 - Still working on... but so far so good.

My Final Fantasy hierarchy.

FFVI, because not only was it the transition from the SNES to the PSX, it was the transition for the series to become as mature as it is now.

It took me a long while to really appreciate FFVI at first. I've played through IV (back when it was II on SNES) so many times that I was always used to having the entire world support you in some cheesy hollywood fashion. FFVI was like a game where your situation turned from bad to worse and you slowly had to work your way up to fix things.

FFVI was like starting off at a point, then that point continues to go downward until it reaches it's lowest point (the destruction of the earth) and then you really had to earn your way back up again. The game actually made you appreciate and care about all of the characters and they also had their own interesting stories in the 2nd half of the game. Plus the game dealt with alot of mature issues like teenage pregnancy, enslaving races, the end of the world, etc. It was a little too much for my 13 year old mind to handle at first. I began to appreciate it much later when it was a game that made literally put all of the characters on their own without much help and you had to help them through their struggles.

I own every NTSC version of FFVI (SNES, Super Famicom, NA and JP PSX, GBA). That's how much I love the game.

@LTM360: I'm counting that as VI.

@luxx: I have no idea what you just said... But that counts as IX.

Final fantasy IV. I think playing that game got me sucked into RPGs and I've never left them!
Play the text adventure where you control the action, like this user:

If you even know what you're talking about, you should know theres more to it than the fact that it's expensive. Like, the fact that Sony pretty much coded the Playstation 3 so you have to code it SPECIFIALLY for the PS3, meaning that it'll be very hard for developers to get their games out on other platforms - because they basicly have to code it from scratch. Video game developers also hate Sony for really not caring aout their problems - and that Sony tries to hide obvious problems and refuse to give aid how to circumvent them.

I've also heard that the PS3 suffers from really stupid errors that should have been caught in the initial process. And most importantly, that Sony has continued to really not care about the users by time after time again doing what everyone was hoping for WOULDN'T happen.

The PS3 will make Sony go bankrupt. It'll be a disaster. And it already is.

And I'll certainly not spend 600-700 dollars on something just to get Final Fantasy XIII. If SquareEnix have any real brain they'll make it cross-platform. And if that happens, it's bye-bye to the PS3.

That's what they did with the PS2, and look which console was the top-selling last gen?

Yes, because 13 is the be-all and end-all of gaming. Go soak your head.

Seems to me that the majority of the people who have posted here haven't even bothered to play the classics. And then they think they can give their opinion on said games. Wow, you are all such gamers, heh. :P

I don't really think I could choose a favorite. I really like IV, VI, and Tactics the same. The only ones I haven't really played are III and XII, so can't really comment on those yet. :P

I actually enjoyed the older Final Fantasies very much. Well, from the ones that I've played on the GBA, which is 1, 2, and 4. I found FF2's leveling system to be quite challenging and fun for me. Maybe it was because I actually had a reason to go suicidal on my party for once! But all in all, I think those games are good and were probably pretty great for their time, but you can definitely tell they are showing their age.

Whoa whoa! This is the Final Fantasy thread, not how much I love/hate PS3 thread!

Please calm down, both of you.

And Mikker, I apologize what I said earlier...it was not a personal attack against you.

For now, I'm going to go with Final Fantasy VIII. Even though I havn't passed VIII, along many other FF (I, II, III, IV, VII) I still found it enjoyable. I still havn't played XII, yet, but my opinion may change once I do play it.

Well I played I, III (DS remake) and IV, and I thought they sucked. I don't really care how great they were in their day, I didn't play them back then. Without any nostalgia fueling the experience, I just can't get into them.

Just because someone didn't play every game in the series doesn't mean they can't have an opinion on their favorite of the ones they did.

...No one here has even MENTIONED Chronicles, perhaps my second favorite.

Yes carrying that tub of water when no one even thought to get a backpack was bothersome but it's the only successful multi-player FF that comes to mind. It was a fun multiplayer adventure that actually didn't make you want to kill your partner. *cough* Zelda: Four Swords. *cough*

Plus I beat it in two-player mode.

Crystal Chronicles would've been 800x more fun if it would've just let you use a goddamn second controller.

I have to admit, you're right. What they did with only letting you use GBA ones was sheer idiocy. It would have sold much better and worked fine if they just let you use GC ones.

Yes, they can have those if they want, but people having opinions about games they never played, or didn't like because they're 'just not up to today's standards' can go drown.

I can't make my mind up whether to choose Final Fantasy IV, or X. I'll leave the decision to the flip of a coin.

The coin says Final Fantasy IV.

My vote goes to Final Fantasy 5.

(played so far: the first 5, 7, TA, CC, so I haven't played 6 yet)
