GamePolitics is reporting that Take-Two, publisher of Rockstar's controversial Manhunt 2 (which was rejected by the UK's BBFC today) has confirmed that the game has received the retail kiss-of-death from the ESRB: an Adults Only rating.

I wonder how long it'll be until Jack Thompson sues Nintendo/R* for a kid strangling another kid with a Wiimote/Nunchuk.

Like local game shops that have no qualms in selling games that are basically outlawed due to a stupid provincial law?

Thompson won't have much to say about Manhunt 2 unless it gets toned down; no one's going to carry it, unless by some unprecedented change all retail stores start carrying AO titles. You won't be able to buy or rent it from a local shop--more or less you'd have to specifically order it online, if anything.

If anything, all this does is confirm that the game will die and be completely ignored by pretty much everyone.

This is completely ridiculous. The only reason it got this rating is because of Thompson. I wasn't a fan of the first game, but from what I understand, this is just more of the same. Ugh.

It'll be purchasable in Denmark. Thank god for free speech!

Damn, America. You are really getting behind on this 'freedom' thing of yours, eh? :P

Not my type of game, though. Looks too bloddy violent. Really, if it's this violent, I think it might deserve to get such a high rating? Even if I don't agree with a certain mr. evil attorney, I wouldn't really want to see a 10 year old playig a game that is pretty much what said evil attorney is making ALL games out to be. It has to go quite far to get banned in Britain, right?

Okay this is only a first review, Take Two has 30 days to cut content, after all they said that they made Manhunt 2 for "mature" audiences and are upset by the AO rating.

Expect it to be M for mature when it releases next month, also Thompson has nothing to do with ESRB, he wants to ban all games so don't blame this on him.

(brocken prepares to make more enemies and go against the grain.)

Two things these amazing and so numerous local game shops you're talking about there is a whopping one in my state of kentucky (game force) and that actually isn't local is it it's more of an underground chain isn't it? We have to rely on chains like EB, Gamestop and walmart so your amazing land of tons of local game shops that make it so it doesn't matter that chains won't sell it let me know where it is. Also please shut the hell up about jack thompson I know it is easy to blame everything on him but in case you forgot who rates the games it's the freaking ESRB ok? you all are talking about "WOWZ JACK THOMPSON SURE IS GOING TO HAVE FUN WITH THIS ISN"T HE?" no no he won't. First to the genius who said it was his fault it was rated AO are you sure it's not the fact that you jam a crow bar through someone's head you see brain matter fly then someone says in your ear "Good job!" Then to the geniuses who said he's going to go after this game like crazy he won't ok first because no one will be playing it and two there will be so many better targets to go after. Please just because a game is bad doesn't mean someone's going to attack it when's the last time Jack thompson gave a speech on state of emergency or fugitive hunter? Also please people he isn't some big bad shadow looming over the gaming community he has literally accomplished nothing so why the hell do you have to bring him up in EVERY conversation about videogames. I also really felt like this needed to be said somewhere in here. Get back to /gaia.

Well, you don't need to be concerned with buying it at all:

"GameSpot has confirmed with Nintendo and Sony that one of those options--accept the ESRB's judgment and release the game with the AO rating--isn't an option at all. Both companies forbid licensed third-party publishers from releasing games rated AO for Adults Only on their various hardware platforms"

So unless the game gets an M rating, you'll never play it anyway! :D

It'll get an M rating.

Or they'll make a special exception for Manhunt 2.

But this oddly reminds me of Thrill Kill...

The quote came from Gamespot asking them ABOUT Manhunt 2, to which Sony and Nintendo both replied the game would never be released on their system as an AO title.

'k...

Then Rockstar are going to find a way for the ESRB to put it as M title. I doubt they're going to want all this hype to go to waste.

Rockstar can do a few things

A-Ask for a re-evaluation for a M rating
B-Cut content to get it down to a M rating (most likly)
C-Cancel the game (doubtful)

Do you not read?

"GameSpot has confirmed with Nintendo and Sony that one of those options--accept the ESRB's judgment and release the game with the AO rating--isn't an option at all. The game is already AO, it will never be released for sale, even online, save for any possible bootlegs.

The only choice they have now is to tone down or remove whatever makes the game 'AO' and hope for an M rating.

Or ask for a re-evaluation, but I think they've declined the opportunity for that, and I don't see Rockstar removing content.

Still smells of Thrill Kill.

If by 'true fans' you mean 'some programmer leaks a bootleg' than yeah, I guess?

If Sony and Nintendo won't allow it to be distributed (MS won't either, btw--but Manhunt isn't slated for release on the 360), there's no way a "legal" version of the game can ever exist.

Like Hatman said, it does seem a bit like Thrill Kill--but since Rockstar and TakeTwo love to make money, my bet is on removing content to tone it down to an M rating. They'll never make a dime off of 'pirating' the game.

Do you remember when one young man was killed by his friend because the first Manhunt supposedly warped his mind? I'll bet that had a hand in this. Oh, well. At least we got GTA, unlike Australia.

I'd actually have to agree.

My morbid curiosity has been peaked with Manhunt 2.

"For example, to gain entry into the torture chamber [of the fetish club], you have to show the guard a recognizable face. Predictably, this involves removing someone's head with an axe and then holding it up to the window."

Neat?

Not neat. Corny as hell which makes me want to play more. This game needs to be full of cheesy one-liners.

There won't be a way too get it; as stated in this thread before, Nintendo and Sony forbid games with an AO rating to be published on their consoles. Ergo, Rockstar cannot publish the game, through any means without getting in trouble. I really doubt they would make an exception, anyway- and even then, most store refuse to stock AO games. So basically distribution would be extremely limited, and I doubt Rockstar wants that.

Rockstar will be removing content, if they want to make money- elsewise, they have to cancel it. That's all there is to it.

As mentioned above, it's not like they never removed content before (shoddily, but still)...

The thing is, from what I've heard of the game, I don't know what content will they be able to remove. This is probably why it's been delayed, so they can determine what they can get away with and what they can't.

I don't see why people are so up in arms about this. Most video stores don't carry extreme, rated X porn. Why should game stores be asked to carry an extreme, rated AO game? You can already get away with a shit-ton of sex and gore in most rated M games. (What's the one where you go around beating crazy homeless people with crowbars...?)

For the game to be rated AO it had to have been pretty out there, and if that's the case, any non-specialty store or console maker has the right NOT to release it. Sure there's freedom of expression, but there's also the right of Sony and Nintendo not to feature games they don't like. It's THEIR console.

I can just imagine a bunch of Rockstar programmers sitting in a room smoking pot, joking to each other about "I wonder how much crap we can get away with in this game!?" Well, now they know. :sawit:
