When I first played 3-1 (as well as playing it after I finished Farewell, My Turnabout), the introduction graphics turned me away a bit. They were horrible small and lacked the oomph that introductions gave to other cases. However the case itself proved to be much better than I expected after the bad graphics.
I was surprised to find Phoenix in the defendant's seat. I thought, oh this is going to be funny, as most likely he'll be found innocent straight away and prove even from his seat several contradictions. I was horribly shocked to find him a pathetic wimp who kept whining about 'Dollie'. I think this was what further cemented how much I hated Phoenix. Even back then, he still needed someone to hold onto his hand, or rather be with him.
Mia was definitely a surprising character to play as. Although it was a tutorial case so she stumbled several times and as a result, listen to the Judge's, or Grossberg's monologue giving advice, I found Mia was quite cool and collected. She was definitely better than Phoenix in his first trial. By the end of the case, I was excited, anticipating that the next case would also be a Mia one, but I was disappointed...until I came to 3-4.
Dahlia was the perfect villain I had encountered so far in the games. She was very cool, calm and even when it was revealed she was going to be found guilty of Swallow's murder, she still did not breakdown or start yelling at the defense, blaming them. I knew that if Dahlia were to return as a villain (and I knew she would because of when Dahlia said its been a long time since they last me.) that the game would be epic.
I didn't really draw any pairings from this. Although Mia/Phoenix has crossed my mind, I refuse to pair GS1-3 Phoenix with anyone because this case showed how much I hated him. It was only when he was disbarred that he realized he was an idiot...
Overall, I like this case. It's a lengthy tutorial case and features good character development (only Mia and Payne really), so I enjoyed this case, to say. I'll probably play it again later on as I love seeing Dahlia in court. She's just so...evil

Yes, second-best tutorial case. It was interesting going into a "past incident" on the first case, and they did it well. Phoenix was pathetically funny, and Dahlia was a great villain. I loved her exploding butterflies :3 She and Payne both had great breakdowns.
I agree with Hawk about the best line (Although "My perfectly Dollie doesn't poop!" is a close second.)

I've always thought that Phoenix seems much more out of character here than he does in AJ.
Also it's funny, as much as I love T&T, I don't like the overall villain. Dahlia is a stupid, unimaginative criminal, whose MO is always to pretend to be sweet and fool idiots and then just kill people when she can't think of another way out of her situations. She's boring. The way everything else is affected by her however greatly makes up for the fact that I don't think much of her character.
Then again my two favorite cases in this game are the ones that have nothing to do with Dahlia so~

It's also a shame that because of them showing the cases out of order, you don't understand how big of a deal it is for Mia until later in the game. It's kind of a neat reveal later on, but when you replay 3-1 it feels like there should have been much more going on in Mia's head during and after the case, which they obviously couldn't include for spoiler reasons.
I do like Dahlia though. It's nice to have a female killer who can hold her own with the boys, even if she is crazy.

If we had played the cases in a more chronological order as suggested above (ie, this case and 3-4 are switched) I probably would have liked this case a bit more. I agree that if they had done this, they could have played out the Mia-

To appreciate this case fully I felt you should have played it again between 3-4 and 3-5 (my worthless personal opinion though)

It's a little weird how Mia needed guidance in the courtroom considering it was her second case, but I suppose one can forget a bit (or at least blank out) after a year.
The music was AMAZING. I love how the courtroom music became progressively dramatic with each game. By 3-1, you hear that theme when the courtroom scene opens, and you know you're getting into some deadly serious shit. At least until Feenie starts sneezing and sobbing and pulling his snot-soaked flu mask from his eyes. Speaking of that...

I can't even believe that's the same Phoenix who becomes a lawyer three years from that case. I would have believed it was the same Phoenix had he been fifteen years old there.
Then again, Mia does advise him to mature a bit. It's still weird, though. Maybe the romance with Dahlia!Iris turned his brain into mush.
I might have mentioned this in the 1-4 thread, but I did like the parallel between this case and the fourth grade trial (springtime, Phoenix is sick, and accused of a crime he didn't commit).
And I LOL'd when Mia took out her frustrations on Grossberg every time Phoenix said something sickeningly lovey-dovey about Dahlia. Poor Grossberg... can't catch relief standing up OR sitting down.

I do feel that this case was... kind of a chore to play, and had too many funny moments, some parts of it felt to me like a drawn-out Phoenix Wrong episode. I mean Phoenix is, if you pardon my french, a wimpy little bastard in this case. If I were Hobo Phoenix looking back on this, I'd be so embaressed, I'd lock the record up with a 19-digit password, and never show it to Apollo and Trucy until Hell freezes over.
However, this case has got it's really good parts. Mia is really good in this, as was Payne. Loving the quiff. Dahlia is probably the baddest girl ever. I mean she is stone-cold evil, yet sickly sweet at nearly the same times.
Overall, This is still a good case, and the first tutorial case which actually has a major impact in the game's story. I do think this is better than 2-1 and 1-1, but 4-1 represented a Phoenix-in-the-defendant's-chair case much better. Hobo Phoenix rules!

When I first bought this game I thought, "How are they going to make another first case?" When I learned that this case was about Mia, I had it in my head that the whole game was going to have her be the main protagonist and I looked forward to investigating as her.
Still, I didn't like Mia's voice. It seemed much higher than I had imagined. The music in this game is good too. Except they gave almost the exact same feel as Justice For All's music, albeit executed better.
This was also the first First case that did NOT show the real killer in the beginning. I think I'm the only person who actually likes Phoenix the way he was in this case. It made me think of him as more than just some guy you're pretending to be with not much real character except an overly cliched sense of justice. I could relate to this Phoenix, he's easily manipulated, wimpy, and vulnerable to disease in the spring. I cheered him on every time he defended Dahlia.
I was just as captivated by Dahlia's beauty as the Judge and Winston Payne were. I then assumed that since she was not present in the other games, she must be a victim later in this game (with Mia being the defense for the suspect) so I prepared to weep for her future death. Alas, I was disappointed upon learning the obvious truth. I kept hoping to myself that she wasn't guilty and did a leap of joy when the possibility of lightning being the real killer was brought up. *sigh, oh well, can't have everything, can we?
I don't even know what hemorrhoids are and I'm not willing to find out anytime soon.

Those things aside, I thought that this was a decent opening case for this game and did a good job of introducing Dahlia/Mia. Also, it's nice to see Payne confident for once, and seeing his hair fly off at the end was (and still is) hilariously funny.

The star of this case was Winston, though. "Whoops! I suppose that's the defence's job too!" or something along those lines is just one of his many awesome phrases. Why, oh why did I have to make you lose your hair! It was awesome! I liked the confidence that 4-1 Payne had, too; it hearkened back to this case's Payne. Y'know, there should be an AAI based on Payne; to flesh him out more than just "1 dimensional cardboard prosecutor for the first case".
So yes; alright introductory case, but not my favourite one.

What makes this case interesting is that you can finally play someone other than Phoenix, and see the flashback of how Mia and Phoenix actually met. Before playing this case, sometimes I thought how they met, or just randomly went face to face with one another.
Also, this first case actually gets to the main storyline right away, being a very important case. The reasons I didn't like the previous first cases were because they lacked the main plot. It makes this case memorable, instead of just some random case that were very little related to the story.
One last thing, this is a case where we learn our great main character's background, other than the school trial. It shows that he could possibly have another reason for becoming a lawyer, to help others. Since he experienced being a suspect, it gives him another motive to be a defense attorney, other than just helping out his friends. It also shows how much Phoenix has changed since this trial, if you compare this case's Phoenix to our defense attorney one, you can see he changed a lot.

Due to my friends who had played Ace Attorney far before I had and found much pleasure in spoiling me, I already knew that Phoenix was the defendant for that case. Honestly, given the allusions concerning the class trial in 1-4, I had already inferred that Phoenix was a sentimental crybaby when it comes to stuff like this -- ok, yeah, he was still in grade school, but it then goes on to say that he became a lawyer just to save a childhood friend he hadn't seen in years; I was prepared for the fact that college!Phoenix was going to be, in all likelyhood, some kind of utterly naiive fool.
Also given that he changes so drastically from he end of T&T to AJ, it would seem that Phoenix's personality is greatly influenced by events that happen in his life -- kind of makes you wonder what other phases he went through before college, eh?

I was glad they finally mentioned Profiles in the tutorial (they didn't in the tutorial for JFA -- although since it was the first game I played, it didn't come as much of a shock for me), and it was a nice change to play as someone other than Phoenix...even if he was still directly tied to the case. Dahlia pissed me off so hard, which is one of the reasons why I freaking adore her as a character. A great final boss for T&T, in my opinion, and the fact that she WOULDN'T GO AWAY GODAMMIT made fighting her in court all the more...satisfactory. <3 I did feel sorry for her butterflies, though. Poor babies D:.
...I also loved Mia's rebuke of Payne in the final scene, with the Coldkiller X -- take that, asshole!
TL:DR, it was entertaining, and I will never trust my bottle of Advil ever again.

Agreed. It works for young Mia, but hearing that high-pitched "Objection!" come from Mia channeled by Maya in case 3-2 just sounded ( and looked) wrong.

I'll start by saying Turnabout Memories is awful. Not the case itself, the 'theme music' for the case. Seriously, what the hell was that
Other than that, the music was pretty great, even if it didn't seem as...upgraded from the GBA versions as the AA and JfA music was? Does that make any sense? Anyway, Trial 2004 is the best trial music of the series hands down, Pursuit - Caught is no Cornered but it's still damn good, and of course I loved Distant Traces.
Case itself was miles better than 1-1, 2-1, and I'd even say 2-2. The trial seemed pretty solid, with the only thing that really bugged me being how it took the pharmacology students over ten minutes to go find out what was going on when the power went out.
Characters:
Mia - Ehh, I started not really caring one way or the other about Mia to not really liking her all that much. She doesn't really seem to have much of a personality of her own, even in her own case. She's kind of like Phoenix with tits and a bad attitude, with the way she kept smacking poor Grossberg around.
Grossberg - Then again, I liked Marvin a lot more when his main topic of discussion was lemon-scented youth instead of his 'roid problems.
Judge - The Judge is still the Judge, what more needs to be said?
Phoenix - I guess I'm one of the few people that didn't mind 'Feenie.' Come on, Nick's always been sort of an impulsive dork; he was just more of one back in college.
Payne - Hey, Winston actually gets some personality! Granted, he's a bit of a cocky, sexist jerk (kind of like the main prosecutor in this game), but at least it's funny when Payne does it. He's somewhat competant, too, though Dahlia is still more so.
Dahlia - Loved Dahlia, gee big suprise there huh. She's not the most skilled criminal in the series, but she seems to be fairly intelligent when she isn't panicked and desperate, and her snide comments ("Those pharmacology students sure enjoy their drugs") were amusing.
I actually thought this case was fine as the first one as opposed to playing it after 3-4 like some people suggested. 3-4 was a bit too dark for a tutorial case.
I still suck at wrapping up long posts like this. Good case.

Exactly. They pulled it out WAY too much in GS3, thus effectively ruining the special punch it had when it was only used in the latter portion of case 2-4.

Yes, yes it does. I felt the EXACT same way when I played the game. I was thinking something like, "Uh, did they even upgrade the music for this one?!" Not that I don't like chiptunesy music (I LOVE it), but GS3's music, almost across the board, did very little for me.

Honestly, I think the music worsened each game. I'll always love the music from AA the best -- even if GK is pretty damn close to usurping it. I also agree with reserving the one tune for shizo!Matt. It definitely suited his evil self, mmhmm. :3

And I actually like most of the music in T&T, other than the aforementioned Turnabout Memories. It just seems like the quality of the sound could have been better.

I really liked playing as Mia and learning more about her early defense attorney life. Before this case, the player never really got to explore Mia's past other than the fact that her mother disappeared after DL-6, and that she was murdered. Other than that and possible observations from case 1-1 (such as her habit of getting people's names wrong), you never really get to see her character that much. When she's channeled, you see a little bit of her personality, but not much of her past.
Apparently Capcom's AA team was thinking the right thing when they let the player play as Mia in the past. Here, you were able to see how Mia's character was in the past, that she wasn't always the smart attorney who seemed to know everything. It also led to thoughts of Mia's development from her character in 3-1 to her character in 1-1 to 2-4, 3-2 and 3-3 (doesn't really count in 3-3 x_x), and 3-5.
It was quite surprising to see Phoenix as the defendant, especially because Phoenix said that he was "surprised to be in the defendant's chair" in 1-2. Even more surprising was his personality. He was so... childish. He cried numerous times, he almost always kept a smile on his face (not that that's a bad thing), and was a bit stupid. The main thought in my head: (How could this person turn into the Phoenix Wright that we know and love?). You, of course, find that out at the end of the case.
Grossberg appeared again, large as ever. Not too many thoughts here, other than... HEMORRHOIDS.
Payne was just as inept, although he seemed a lot more... confident. He taunted Mia, which was different from how he treated Phoenix in case 1-1. Overall, he's a pretty unnoticeable character.
And then.... Dahlia Hawthorne. You don't find out that much about her during 3-1, except she's well... EVIL. Not only did she kill Doug Swallow, she also poisoned an attorney, Diego Armando, and started a relationship with Phoenix just to hide the evidence. Plus, she was ready to kill him at any moment. Of course, you find out more about her later in the game.
As an additional remark, when I was checking the Police Report, I can't help but to notice the name "Diego Armando". It made me ask quite a few questions. What did he look like? What was his personality?
I guess that's all for now......

Turnabout Memories was a really good tutorial case and quite unique, since here you got to play as Mia and Grossberg was your assistant (I got so tired hearing about his 'roids though :P) It was also interesting to see Phoenix as a defendant, but I honestly hated the way he was in this case; He acted like such a crybaby and that he was really hung up on 'Dollie'.
Speaking of which, Dahlia was a GREAT villain in this game, possibly the best out of the whole series. She's so deliciously evil and I love it. I didn't think she was just going to appear this one time here, but 3-4 proved me wrong.
I really don't have much to say about this case, since everyone before me has pretty much nailed everything on the head, so I'll just give out my grade: B+. A great start to this fantastical game, and only the beginning of Dahlia's evilness :D

She was very cool, calm and even when it was revealed she was going to be found guilty of Swallow's murder, she still did not breakdown or start yelling at the defense, blaming them. I knew that if Dahlia were to return as a villain (and I knew she would because of when Dahlia said its been a long time since they last me.) that the game would be epic.

Well of course she did that but it was very tame compared to the other killers breakdowns. When Dahlia admitted her guilt, she walked out of that courtroom serenely. Sorry, I didn't explain my statement before very well. Here is what Dahlia said at the end calmly.

I absolutely adore this case. I was so happy when I found out you were playing as Mia defending Phoenix. Before I played this game, I didn't really like either of those two. After this case, I just loved them both. I like this Phoenix much better than the normal Phoenix, strangely enough.
I really like the music too, the 'Objection' theme was the best in the series, imo. And Grossberg was hilarious. =P
I thought it was so sad when you found out about Diego. When Mia first punched Grossberg, I thought she'd been dumped recently, but then I worked out in the next minute or two that he must be dead or something. It was very funny when I worked it out, ages before the game tells you. XD
And Dahlia is the best villain ever. When I become a murderer, I want to be just like her. I just don't want to get caught. =/
