Well, I did some fire emblem re-colorings back in the day. But these are my first real attempts, yes.

Actually, I have a question. Would it be okay for me to hold concept art here too... just until I finish the respective sprites? 'cause I'm at least partially using this thread to keep my stuff together... But I'm not sure if I'm allowed to put them here, even as placeholders. I don't really want to get in trouble.

Hmmm, well, I know someone posted the outlines of a sprite that they haven't colored in, and then they colored it in, but if you're talking about sketches that you drew, then wouldn't that be in an art thread?

Personally, I think it would be silly to make a new topic just for the concept art. The focus is still on the sprites, so I suppose it won't pose a problem.

However, if you plan to submit art other than just the concept sketches, make a topic in the fanart section. I'd suggest you add sprites there as well, so as not to clutter the forum with a topic for every genre of art you make. That's what I did back when I had an art thread of mine, and never had any problems because of it.

By the way, good work on the sprites. Misa's hair is very jaggedy, but Sheldon looks awesome. Too bad he's the victim xD

That's what I figured. These are all character designs for sprites I plan to make, but I'm very slow so the sprites themselves take a while. It's sort of an "In progress" look.

Thanks! I made the Misa Sprite a little over two years ago, so I'm glad you like more recent attempt. ^_^

And yes, Sheldon is very Awesome. It is very sad he's the victim. But I thought it would be good to do a few victim sprites at first since they tend to be less expressive. I don't know now though, I don't have any more of the victims designed. :yuusaku:

Anyway, I went ahead and added Freida, Dwayne, Diana and Herod's Concepts to the first post:

EDIT Something Messed up and they're too big. I'll resize and add to the first post later.

Well, first I do a quick concept sketch. (Sometimes more than one if I'm having trouble with hair/clothes/etc.) Then I find a "Base" Sprite with the same basic pose I want them or who has the same basic body type. (Klavier for Light, Ema for Misa, Kristoph for Sheldon) Then I trace over the parts I need and free draw the parts I can't find. Color/Shade/Highlight. For Sheldon I went back and added colored outlines and did a bit of smoothing.

Speaking of designing... I finally designed my next victim. On to Spriting!

(New Designs: Themis (Front), Themis (Bench), Louie McMurdough and Fritz Lockehart...Completing the first case designs.)

Hey, I just finished the Louie Sprite:

Spoiler: Louie McMurdough: Ace Victim
Image

And might I say that he's a sexy, sexy Murdoughrer...I mean victim. I really think he turned out pretty well. The Hair is about as good as I could want... the zipper at least calls to mind what it's supposed to be... :yuusaku:

Making victims is fun... but I think I'll have a go at Frieda next. ^_^

Very nice! The only problem I see is the low visibility of the glasses; if I hadn't seen the concept art, I wouldn't have noticed they were there.

I think I'd have to agree with Chesu there - it's really hard to notice the glasses. Also, the dark outlines of the jacket stand out a lot; I'd suggest using a slightly lighter colour. Other than that, the sprite is very good.

There are glasses ... ?
Otherwise, a neat sprite, even though the outlines are too contrastful.

I definitely see what you mean about the outline, looking at it. And I'll try to fix the glasses.

EDIT: Okay, I moved up the glasses to make them more visible. And I changed their color a bit and lightened the outline. Did it help?

Good. I'm glad you like it.

Update! (Again?) I finished Frieda's Sprite. She's based on one of Dahlia's unused Character designs.

Spoiler: Frieda Lockehart... Ace Defendant?
Image

I am officially never designing anyone who wears stripes EVER AGAIN. And Speaking of Designs, Turnabout Firestorm was looking lonely, so I made a few character designs. (And I updated Fritz...no so much a hick anymore.) Also, Themis as the Prosecution's Aide design.

Spoiler: Fritz Lockehart, Carson Estrelli(Victim), Aide Themis and Al Dentay

Thanks a lot! I worked pretty hard on them. ^_^ I hope to continue doing one sprite for each person until all the characters have at least one pose. I'm not sure whether to work on Fritz or Themis Next though. (Not that My Brand-spanking-new copy of AAI is going to help my productivity.)

On a side note, should I post short character bios? That is, are you interested in a bit more identification than "Witness/Victim/Defendant"?

Actually, it'd probably be better for you to post their biographies without identifying them as victim/defendant/whatever. If the player sees a character alive but already knows that they're a murder victim, it kind of spoils it. There were characters you meet during the course of the game that are murdered in each of the original three games, but I wouldn't have wanted to go in the first time knowing they'd die.

Okay, I'll do that. Although the way things have worked out you only meet one victim before he's Murdered.

Edit: I edited all but the first case, since it's really hard to give any additional information there without doing some spoiling.

Also I'm going to attempt to do Themis's "Prosecution's Aide" Sprite. Hopefully I can finish tonight... before I crack open AAI.

hmm...there well done and have nice concept sketches...but anyways what I see needs work is your outlines...there very thick and lack proper shading

you need to blend those lines in while making them visable

really one or two small details I could nit pick about but your doing a nice job on your oc so far so good luck on the rest of your oc :D

I actually have been trying to figure out the whole outlining thing for a while. It doesn't seem to like me. However, I just tried out a new (Old?) technique on my Prosecution's Aide Sprite. What do you think?

Spoiler: Themis with less Pixle-y outlines.

And just for fun...

Also, I had some time in school to doodle, making five more designs! (Good thing too, Turnabout Revolver was getting lonely. :yuusaku: )

Spoiler: Jon Rewrighter, Unnamed Camper, Brothers- Clyde and Dale Foley (Right to left) and Sydeny Lenon
ImageImageImageImage

Unnamed Camper is still, regrettably, unnamed. Clyde can't even get his own concept picture, poor guy. And Sydney should be older than she looks in the picture,(ie 40's not 20's) the rest of the design turned out so well I overlooked it.

yea...lines are tricky at first since the thickness of lines can vary in areas...plus shading effects it as well :grey:

anyways about the sprite if your going for a more ace attorney sprite it needs work
(I think its partly due to the way your shading it) but spritewise in general id say its nicely done showing your own style of doing things :godot:

Yeah, I kind of had to make up the shading, especially on the coat/hair. I'm trying to go for a more Ace Attorney feel, so any specific advice on the shading would be extremely helpful.

Also, are the outlines better this way?

As for Varying thickness, I guess I'm just going to have to try and get the hand of it, huh?

Don't brush your sprites.

Only use pencil, otherwise it'll look smudgy and anti-aliased.

I tried to do that with my first two sprites and the outlines looked jagged. Do you have any suggestions about how to mediate that? I've been using the smallest setting and trying to smooth them out a bit, but maybe there's something I'm not doing?

well there are afew actually like with the hair on your latest oc for example many of the lines are just lines usually lines get lighter before they end and slowly blend into the hair other cases instead of a line they use shading to represent the line and where it ends
or with the case your having for example lines need more than one color to blend. first the line then a second line for blending but its not always a direct line that goes with the first line one such example would be to make a line curving and have the second color in a sence overlap on the inside of course dont complete the line just add one or two dots at the place where it curves...
the best suggestion i can make it to experiment when making a line to find what the best fit for it is also to zoom in and look at some of the official sprites to see what they do even take a look at other spriters sprite's to see how they do it.

sorry for all the text but hope it helps :P

I don't recommend the brush for outlines.
Using the brush may look cool, but when it comes to animation, it's bad.
What program are you using?
I used the brush, and the still sprite was fine, but when animating...
Results:
ImageImage
There were white bits in the sprite.
So, practice with the pencil, It may take some time to get used to it, but the results are good :D (I'm still learning how to use the pencil lol)

Don't worry about the amount of text, I think you've given me a couple good pieces of advice.

But I was having trouble understanding the second paragraph. A second line for blending? So, like, a lighter line on the inside of the other one that prevents it from being too abrupt? I'm not sure if that will help with the outer jagged edge though, which is really what I'm more worried about. And the last part may have gotten a bit too technical for me...I really have no idea what you mean. :yuusaku:

The Brush tool outlining on Themis was actually kind of a last-ditch effort to make something that wasn't jagged with the idea (Well-founded it seems) that if it didn't turn out I can always re-outline. I feel like I'm missing some key element of it since, it seems like, even with your sig-sprite, the pencil tool is getting a much finer reading than I'm able to get. Maybe it just comes with practice?

I guess I'll get to work on that re-outlining thing

(I'm using Photoshop Elements 5.0 BTW)

Thanks. She's supposed to be cute-as-a-button.

Speaking of, I just spend the last 6 hours re-working the Themis Sprite using all your people's Wonderful advice about Outlines. It's not perfect, but I think it turned out well enough to post.

Spoiler: Pixel'd Themis

Double post for an update: I was messing around while scripting the opening sequence for Runaway to a Turnabout and I came up with this lame opening "Silhouette" of Louie on the Phone

I figure maybe I can use it toward the middle of the call, so I at least avoid the "Entirely black screens+dialogue" method of opening.

I think it's fine if you're updating with new content.

The court sprite is very nice! I can tell that it looks a lot like the normal view, but it's kind of hard
to see the shape of her hair. Maybe it's not a problem on a lighter/multicolored background...

I'm not really sure what to think about the "silhouette". Maybe if it were an actual
silhouette; as-is, I'm having trouble imagining how you'll use it. Having it on a black
background with text over it seems kind of... awkward.

I really love how Themis looks. I wish I could do smooth shading and fine details like that! :larry:
Looking at her, I can't help but thing of Thalia from NETTG.

I finished Madison's Aide court sprite so I set up the first case just for kicks.
Spoiler: Court Spriting Fun!

Actually that's exactly how I planned to do it, but with a couple extra... Well I made a demo to show you what I mean:

Spoiler: More half-assed spriting fun!

You see? there's a bit of shadowing and the text box is semi transparent, so I don't think it looks too bad.

I actually think that the shading needs a bit of work in places, but thanks a lot! And Wow! :cody-shock2: That does look a lot like Themis! :yuusaku: I guess the world is just weird like that sometimes.

Heyo, Untaken
:D YOUR SPRITES ARE AMAZING. no seriously, they look gorgeous. But... I don't know if I'm good enough to offer advice yet, but Themis's blond hair kinda sticks out a lot. By that, I mean like stand out, and not stuck up. Okay, I'm getting really confused.
anyway, the other thing about Themis is her eyes. They look kinda... I dunno, dull? as compared to the bright yellow hair beside them.
That's it, I guess. Good luck!

Thanks a lot! I'm glad you think they look good. I see what you mean about Themis though, I got similar advice when I drew her for Boxart. I'll make sure to fix that. (Putting down the saturation seems to help.)

On another note: UPDATE! I finished re-doing Frieda's sprite. And I added an additional pose.

Spoiler: Frieda and More Frieda

Why so Frieda? Well, I've been inspired to kick my ass in gear by starting Witness The Truth as a Sprite Comic! And, well, Frieda needs to show up soon. But anyway! The first page is up if any one's interested. (Click on Picture)

I think I really sprite in short creative bursts or something because, LO-and-BEHOLD, here is another update.

Themis this time, since it's simply not possible for her to be that cute all the time, I made her a more normal aide sprite.

Spoiler: Less Adorable Themis

Heyo!
I just saw your "less adorable Themis", and I must say...

YOU ARE WRONG! she is every bit as adorable as the other one! except her eyes kinda stick out a lot... did you use black? cuz if you did, DONT. another thing is that... her suit is so sharp! and her hands are all blurred! :( but other than that, she's gorgeous.

It was more that her pose isn't adorable. Less adorable Themis is still very Adorable. :hotti:

Her eyes are Green with a large darker green pupil. (All other previous attempts ended up with fluorescent green pupilless eyes.) Truth be told, her hands are Ema's real hands with no changes, So... yeah.

As for the suit, I was trying out a more harsh shading style, I guess it didn't work as well there. I think it also may have to do with my new outlining style. (I probably won't take time to fix it though, since Aide Themis is so short lived. But I'll be sure to keep it in mind for the next spite.)
