I didn't wear green today, I wore black like I said I would. I don't get the whole 'pinching someone who doesn't wear green thing' anyway. We don't do that over here, I think it's an American tradition.

Happy (Merry? I dunno) St. Patrick's Day, CRers Could somebody please explain to me the point of this holiday???

Believe it or not, I'm actually 1/8th Irish, IIRC. To show this, I'm wearing a shirt that is about 1/8th green.
Well, not really... I just put this shirt on before I even realized it was St. Patrick's Day. The fact that it's 1/8 green is pure coincidence. But that's enough rambling.

No, I meant what it was originally supposed to be about. It's common knowledge that St. Patrick's Day is all about getting wasted nowadays, but I was wondering what it was originally about.
Assuming there was ever any meaning behind it except for being an excuse of a "holiday" where people get to wear green, get drunk, and act like total idiots.

Well the legend of Saint Patrick says that he was this British fella who got kidnapped by pirates, and then he got sold to some Irish person as a slave. Then a few years later he turned lots of pagan Irish people into Christians using a shamrock, and he got rid of the snakes from Ireland(except he did a crap job since there's snakes in Dublin Zoo, I've seen them). Then he died and they made him into one the patron saints of Ireland. Yeah, there's actually three patron saints of Ireland, and he's the only one of them who isn't actually Irish himself.

He was Welsh he looked after sheep as a slave he returned to Wales but had a dream about the Irish suffering so he returned so he explained the trinity using the shamrock and then he did battle with the pagan kings of the hill of Tara and he also lit the hill of Slane on fire apparently.
Just the things you left out.
Nothing.
