I admire your skill with coloring; I can attest to the fact that coloring can be pretty tricky at times. What I love about your art is how you use strokes of different colors in your highlighting and shading, especially in the portrait of Lang. For a long time I would just use darker and lighter shades of the "base" color to add shading, but after a while it begins to look... I don't know, boring and almost dead. When I started to experiment more with shading/highlighting with different colors, I was amazed at the results! It can really add a lot of depth and life to any artwork.

That picture of Lang and Shih-na is beautiful, by the way. ^^ Excellent color choice, and the anatomy is great! I imagine that working the poses out was tricky, but it definitely paid off.

Oh- the Lang one doesn't have much colour changes at all- I spiced up the shadows cause they were a little grey. That's what happens when your base is pencil ^^; I've got much better examples of using multiple colours in one area

Spoiler: Dr Who pic in coloured pencil
Image

I think making your shades the same hue as the base colour is a great start to shading- it's not ACCURATE, but it's better than flat colours. I donno. To me, as long as the picture tells the story how you want it to, I dont' think there really is a right or wrong way. I could say that younger me had it all wrong when I drew, but you know? Younger me didn't know better and was finding her way and she still did a damn good job :) I try not to be critical of my old art for this reason. Sure, it may be bad, but hey- if it weren't for then, you wouldn't be who you are today ^^

One of my earlier comment said how I did the pose working out. It was longer for this one than others. Mostly cause I started off with a pose, not a scenario. I'm glad you enjoyed it though :)

Oh wow! That new Lang/Shih-na picture is absolutely gorgeous. I'm totally in love with the pose, and actually didn't realize there might be more to the image at first XD But then I thought to click AND BOY I'M SURE GLAD I DID <3 Seriously, it's a fantastic piece. I'm especially in love with Lang's hands and the way you drew them holding Shih-na. Beautiful, beautiful job.

Yeah- it turned out one of those pictures that when cropped was totally a different picture ^^ I thought it'd make a good work safe version of the picture as long as it had a warning for the full version. I was touched by Lang's attitude to his minions in the game, and I feel that because of this, he'd be pretty close to Sheena, considering plot device. What Lang did for her at the end of that case too- that pretty much summed up his character for me. That's where the dog collar came from. Everyone thinks it's a master / slave thing but it's not. In this case, Although Lang may be the master, she quite obviously has just as much command of him in this picture as he has. The dog collar tied to his wrist is to show the bond more between an owner and his pet. If an owner truly loves their pet, they're see them as an equal, and treat them the same :) that's Lang's relationship with Sheena. They may not be canon to me or anyone else, but noone can deny that bond between them ^^ <3

That Lang/Shih-na picture is wonderful. It always amazes me how you can pull off drawing such difficult poses so well and I love the colour scheme too <3

Were you still considering taking requests?

They're closed at the moment- I have a few and I don't wan to hold a huge requests list while I'm so busy. I'll do the current ones then accept a few more. Easter is a bust time of the year for me cause it's con time *u* Only one con this year though- just Moot. Damn Armageddon is moved to Easter weekend now so I can't do Armageddon and Moot now *cries*

The pose isn't too difficult- the biggest thing is composition of the picture. That's what the tough part was. The internet is all you need for references ^^ Thank you though :) Colour- I want that to be a strong suit for me finally. It's getting there slowly. I'm starting to pick up an eye for it :) I'm starting to get combinations that mostly work now ^^

That Dr. Who art is gorgeous! You really did an awesome job with the coloring. <3

Very true! Everyone has their own style, as well. I think the nature of the artwork plays the biggest role. Personally, when I want a picture to be more fantastic or whimsical I tend to go nuts with the colors I use in the shading. XD It all depends, though, as you mentioned.

Something I like to do is redraw my older pictures to get an idea of how much I've improved over the years. I recently redrew a character that I had originally drawn waaaay back in 2003, and comparing the two pieces is almost shocking. Even if your old art doesn't match up to the new, it can still show how much you've learned over the years. :phoenix:

Oh- I don't like revisiting the old. For me, Art is a moment. It's very rare for me to recapture that moment. I'm such an on off switch T.T Some times I do thoguh- most of the time thoguh, it loses that original charm it had all those years ago even though it was crap then. It's like music remakes really XD

Anyways- onto new art!

Spoiler: Cottontail concept art
Image

Cottontail is going to be my entrance to the OC competition this year, and also the most recent revamp of one of my less worked on characters in my fanfic Turnabout Attorney.

I've spent AGES getting her outfit right. :zenny: One fail outfit to the next before I got some ideas I ACTUALLY liked XD (If you guys what to see the concepts, ask and I'll scan them. They're pretty bad though XD )

It was a simple requirement- her theme was snow rabbit. Not sure why I chose that. Originally, her colour scheme was suppose to be similar to Zeth's (cause of their relationship in the fanfic), but I changed it to all white because I wanted a character with white hair and that make up. See- there was this head shot I LOVED but couldn't figure out how to make it work in theme. the lacy boots, collar, and gloves came from try... 3 or 4? It was a terrible un looking costume that had lace on it cause I wanted a plush look that wasn't fur. Added lace and suddenly... :nick-heart: (I have such a weak spot for lace)

Anyways, found some inspiration around the place (Sheena's gloves, Adrian's top, Angel Starr's hair mixed with Maya, and also a bit of Sailor Moon!), and presto! It all came together! It's hard to see on this angle, but her hair is two pony tails tied at the bottom like two floppy bunny ears. They'll look cool when she's in flight or in a fight ;)

So yeah- Gotta work on a few different views of her and an in action scene with her and Zeth, and I'm ready for the OC contest :) Maybe I'll get a spot this year? ^^; Atleast I'll earn what ever spot I get this year rather than submitting a last minute entry XD

I never commented on your last piece you posted but great job ;). I thought I couldn't see mature content on Deviantart but apparently I can :S

Now Cottontail looks really cool. She reminds me of Fran from FFXII for some reason but then I'm in an FF mood :p

I love her clothes. She's got the perfect outfit and it really suits her. Her head seems a bit too small though. I think it is because her hair (and I hope you don't kill me for this!) seems sort of...flat. I don't know how to describe it :( Those bangs look really cool though.

Her head seems small compared to how tall she is, but then, I think the hair is contributes to this problem.

Once again, excellent concept art, Arkillian! I look forward to seeing your entry for the OC Contest :)

No- you're right. Her head is very small. It's because I'm using a body template for this. I'm learning from a fashion design book and I thought that rather than drawing her from scratch, that I'd use one of my practice templates to good use :) They use small heads on purpose to accent the outfits. I'm not very worried about shading accuracy on this one unless someone wants to do a better job than me. I just wanted to lay out colour to make sure I was happy with what I had. It's cool though. It needs shading. She'll have alot more art than this by the competition, so I wouldn't worry too much on my behalf :) thank you though! I'm glad that the outfit made it even if I rushed the shading a heap :)

((Hrmmm... I thought DA's policies were better than that T.T Aiiieeee....))

There are two levels for mature content on DA: warning and strict. if you select warning, it should be viewable even by the public, after a click-through warning; if it's strict, a viewer must be logged in and of age to see it. At least that's my understanding.

I would suggest using more saturation or a different hue for Cottontail; I can't tell if you were going for true grey or what. (And I think blue grey is blasé) Just as Viola doesn't wear a pure black dress, Shih-na doesn't have pure white hair...

My other quibble is about her outfit design; most characters are seen from the waist up, and as it stands I think Cottontail doesn't have much to catch the eye in that department (this sounds strange coming from me, I guess). To me, she looks too clean, and too white; some sort of contrasting element, either in color or in shape, might help.

Gotta agree with Boron here in terms of the missing eyecatchers - I'd suggest using a pattern or a certain theme of details for the looks. She's snowthemed, so how about a snow crystal, a mistletoe (or any other winter plant) or similiar? I'm just throwing ideas out here, but something that makes her stand out a bit more would be good~

She's not meant to be a sprite, but I see where you're coming from. She ended up alot whiter over all and the actual details in her outfit aren't large ones. She was meant to be themed snow rabbit though, so that's why I chose the colours... I can try working on it again and see what I come up with though. I still have the PSD of this. Costume design is very new to me though. I'll give it another crack when I'm over my cold from my Easter away :) Thank you ^^

She's themed snow rabbit, but I can see how that'd be confusing. She doesn't really scream rabbit, does she? ^^; I'll see what I can do to her to make her outfit better. This is all a learning curve for me. I'll see what I can do in the near future :) I'm pretty happy with her head and hair though. I could change her hair colour, but right now, I'm happy with those elements atleast.

An art update, I'm working on a new WIP. Don't think I've posted the sketch for this here yet. Me playing around with foreshortening again

Spoiler: Chose your card WIP
Image

These card choices are based off the Tarot card version of each of them.

Miles is represented here by the king of diamonds/pentacles symbolises a man who is at the peak of wealth (not necessarily monetary, but in this case I believe it's part of it). For a fuller break down, go to this link

Phoenix is represented here by the king of spades, or swords which is a card of power and courage and perceiving the truth in a way that is not bias. For a fuller break down, go to this link

Godot is represented here by the king of hearts, or cups which is a card of consideration, and emotions. For a fuller break down, go to this link

These cards aren't accurate break downs on the characters so please don't critique me on my choice of representation. I felt that it was the best card for each of them.

That WIP is great. Thanks for providing the links to the information about the tarot cards as I thought you just chose random cards and stuck Phoenix, Godot and Miles on them. You've definitely chosen the right ones for them :godot:

Cottontail looks good in the back but one question. Will her hair have layers? At the moment, it still seems rather flat (sorry again. :sadshoe: ) and I think it is because of the lack of layers in it.

Heh... I know that feeling ^^ I try to comment when I can but sometimes you get into a non talking loop where you only comment if you have something really good to say. I find that even professional artists love to hear your thoughts on their art even if it seems insignificant to you... although professional artists usually wont respond to a 'nice picture' type comment, more likely a 'I like this because of' type comment :grossburg: Specially if you're a fan of the characters :D

Thank you though ^^ I have more Phoenix Wright art in my Deviantart account if you follow the link in my signature. There's a folder for it so you don't have to surf my whole gallery for it XD

Oh- I still consider myself very much a rookie too. There's so much to learn about art. That's what I love about it though :) I think I'd get bored of being the best and move onto something else if I was at the top of my game. I don't think I could handle the expectation level >.>

I think though that if I finally got colour that I'd feel ALOT differently about my art. It's one of my pet peeves about my art >.>

Thanks :) Renji has been VERY busy lately and went through some art funk so her end is still WIP. She did link me a WIP the other day though. When she posts it somewhere however I'll post it here. I don't want to open it too much to public just yet. She should have the right to decide when she's ready for others to see it. She wanted me to see the WIP though so I do have an update. It's looking lovely :)

I love the newest sketch! I'm terrible with perspective myself so I find it pretty awesome how you were able to draw Zeth so well from that angle <3 I can't wait to see it coloured.

I really like Cottontail's concept art but I have to say I agree that she maybe needs a few more distinguishing features- obviously her hair and makeup are quite distinctive, but as it's a full body pose, an "eyecatcher" like Boron said would be good. I love the lace texture, maybe we could see a bit more of that?

Were you planning on doing a close-up of her too? She has some really nice facial features.

Oh yeah- she has a close up. I posted it that small cause it's a tall picture ^^ I'll be doing one where you can see her better when I have a better final design :) I'm a bit slow at the moment as I'm still recovering from Easter- head is spinning right now actually >.<

Perspective... oh man, it's a real b!#$ to learn. I struggled for ages on it, but you know what broke me out of it? Life drawing. It's a bit difficult at first to do because you have to flatten the picture in your own mind and really understand the building blocks of the human form. It teaches you alot about finding shapes, and drawing fast though, and more importantly, how to make it 3 dimensional. I was crap at it before. I'm fighting to keep the 3D aspect going now that I have some of it, but that's what did it. For instance, I drew this straight after 2 terms of life drawing, and I did it straight away without a reference. Normally I'd have to referance it.

Another thing that helps a TRUCK TONE is doing the pose yourself. You can then feel where the weight is, what the movement is like, if there's a better pose etc...

Lastly, This website is great when the real thing isn't available. It has a limited range of poses, but you can turn them to what ever angle you want. It's powerful cause it's not photo manipulated like half the internet is.

The most powerful tool however, is knowing the basics, which alot of artists don't seem to know :( If you know them, the references will help. Otherwise you rely too heavily on them.

Some of it is experience too- alot of art is that ... and knowing how to cover up mistakes XD You have to learn correctly though. Oh, and you can't learn it if you don't try either... There's no easy way I guess ^^; If there is, I TOTALLY took the hard road XD

I put it down mostly to life drawing and knowing the basics though :) Urgh... I'll go back to being sick now T.T Post Moot flu sucks :( :jazzsneeze:

PS- thank you for your comments :) It's good to see the fanart thread starting to raise itself for the grave again. I assume this is because of the OC contest? Here's to it staying active! :D I like to see new art ^^

Is my new version of her getting better? I themed her more on hearts this time than snow to give her more colour. She looks a little Vocaloid now though >.>

She looks really good! And her hair is great. :karma:

Thanks Tap :)

Still playing with colours for the outfit. I don't know HOW many combos I've tried, but this one is the latest

Spoiler: Cotton tail version 3

Vera coloured hair is nice on her ^^ Her body suit is now black and hot pink which looks really racy :) Still not convinced though, cause I do like her with black hair cause she looks like a spades symbol. She has a template though so I can play around with colours on that digitally >.>

Quite neat! Reminds me of a Vocaloid. Is that intentional?
She's getting more and more recognizeable anyhow, very good! :)

Unintentional T.T It's because of the head phones. Sadly, I can't help that much ^^; it's part of her character now :) I'd still like to give her black hair though. I think that I need to work on something else for a while though before it drives me nuts >.>

I think the red and orange is a better choice (red and black may be overdone this generation, with the Shih-na craze), though the hair could go either way. Did you mention what Cottontail's profession was that would require such an outfit?

Spoiler: Last version of Cottontail

I think I have a colour combo I'm happy with. Turns out she wanted to be themed hearts and spades, not snow rabbit XD Oncwe I finally listened to her, I got a design I FINALLY liked ^^

I think Cottontail is now far away enough from Sheena that it's fine :) I decided to make her hair black cause I wanted the spades effect her hair makes if her boots are black. The all red version of her was a little over powering too XD

I can't disclose alot about her- some people already know alot of the cool things about her, cause she's got a few cool aspects about her. Cottontail (who will get a real name eventually) is an or was an assassin (Still working on which), and her weapons are pistols and stealth. She's a gymnast, which is why her outfit is designed how it is (Like a leotard gymnasts wear), and she has cool guns. She listens to loud music all the time which is what the head phones are for, but if I say any more than that, I'd have to kill you ;) There's a few more aspects about her profession still besides this, but it's either not ironed out yet, or it's work in progress. She's a character I need to tie in a few plot devices together with so I want to get her right *nods*

I hope that is enough info ^^; I don't want to have to start using spoiler tags on my story before it's written XD

Heh- yeah, my avatar is from my Sheena pic :) Everyone keeps calling her Lady Gaga so I played her up for it XD I love it ^^ Specially the super cheesy sparkles that could put Edward Cullen to shame XD :edgy:

Yeah- I missed Cottontail's hair being black, but the colour set up I did of her being black originally was a little too Halloween. This colour set up has everything I want in her outfit, AND the spades after effect- her hair and boots make a spades shape. I love eet ^^ Thank you though ^^

The series really needs more erotic capital like shih-na, mia and franziska instead of pre-pubescent girls, then again little girls are all the rave in Japan. OMG MOEEE.. >_>;; hrrmm yeah anyway~~ don't worry about my computer, it's tough like moi 8D hurrr

It does :( But Japan make them all Moe anyways, so it doesn't matter. They should vamp up more of them to keep up with the smoking hot men in it XD *dies* I swear- The Attorney games got to my top list consistently due to my suit fetish. Man- I LOVE suits *fauns over AA / AI games. They can make ANY man so much sexier TuT

Spoiler: Canon or not?
Image

XD Shipping OCs with canon characters ftw XD Been doing some RP, and Zeth has been TOTALLY hitting on Calisto Yew (cause well... why not XD ) and I thought to myself, damn... that's actually an awesome pairing cause Zeth would TOTALLY dig her dangerous side XD

Um- calling it Canon or not cause it's only a fun thing. I'm not gonna defend the pairing or debate it. I just thought it'd be pretty cool to se how these two would work together in a picture ;) XD

Oh wow, I love it. I've found that you can pair Calisto up with anyone since...she fits with practically everyone. I personally prefer Apollo/Calisto even though it's an impossible pairing. :karma:

Now I'm a bit worried about how the poker game will turn out. ;)

Yes, I've heard Callisto has a bit of a... poker face. *Tears off Shi-Long Lang-style sunglasses, "Won't Get Fooled Again" by The Who can be heard playing loudly in the distance*

I love the picture, Arkillian. The only criticism I have is that Callisto's freckles seem a bit too prominent.

edit: OH SHIT I JUST SAW THE GUN AND THE PICTURE IS EVEN BETTER NOW.
