The Beast Below - 8/10.
The pacing was a bit all over the place but Matt and Karen's performances more than saved it. I hoped both Karen and the character of Amy would prove themselves this episode, and they did that - and then some. Matt didn't have as much to do as I thought he would've but he shon in the scenes he was in. "Nobody HUMAN has anything to say to me today!". Blimey. Rarely am I actually frightened of the Doctor, but I was definatly pretty scared of him in that scene.

I agree. Amy definitely proved herself a true companion in that last scene, and I thought that Moffat's plot was just incredible. I do, however, think the episode went to quickly, and that perhaps they should change the 'standard' episode length from 45 mins to 1 hour. It would allow the writers more time to characterize certain elements - the smilers were never fully explained, for example, and the half-smilers just felt like an unnecessary add on.

Despite all of this, I give the episode 8/10, because Matt's acting and Moffat's writing were both great, and Karen Gillan was brilliant.

Yes, both of those things irritated me. The Smilers were a great design but didn't have much to do. They were just... there. No back-story 'bout them then. And I have no bloody clue what the Half-Smiler, Half-Human thing was about. It was just "oh he's half-human half-smiler" and I was thinking "how the everloving fuck does that work?".
And it was never brought up again.
That episode definitely needed to be 60 minutes. I fear for Victory of the Daleks - it has a hell of a lot to do in 45 minutes, and it'd be a shame for a great concept to be ruined by a short running time.

On the brighter side, Victory of the Daleks has Winston Churchill.

I am hoping Winston says "ohhh yesh". Just once. I would die a happy man if that happened.

And I'm planning to change my avatar to fit whatever episode is on that week on another forum I go on, so I decided to do it here too.

oh them smilers were scary, but not exactly...needed? I don't know the right word. they should have been explained, like maybe the Queen saying 'we built them to guard blah blah blah' or whatever. And the half-human-smiler thing was creepy, but yet again, not explained. As lmost everyone has said, this show needs to be at least 1h long

And the plot was awesome, as always. The doctor who writers are incredible, and this ep was no exception. Amy is better than i thought she would be, she adds a bit of kick to the series, an may just beat Donna as my favourite sidecick if she gets more awesome later on.

No props for Terrence Hardiman? a.k.a. The Demon Headmaster? Seriously, I got chills seeing him being in a command centre in glasses...he doesn't seem to have aged much! I swear, all he needed to do was to take the glasses off and hypnotise the Doctor.
"Funny you should be so tired, so early in the day."

It was a good episode; I still wanted some explanation for the Smilers, though. Are they just...sentient cameras that terrify? Also, I lol'd at the Test Card F Girl Cameo in the lift in the beginning. And the Tube aesthetics of the Lifts themselves. Now I never want to go to Covent Garden Tube station!

As for the next episode...looks alright, actually. I'd like to see how they write the Daleks. Don't see why everyone is going gaga over Churchill. The poison-gas condoning Tory! I can see why he'd tolerate having DALEKS as a new weapon!

I forgot to say this but I rate TBB 7-8/10. Amy got the charactersiation she needed, and Matt was awesome. "I'll do what I always "do": stay out of trouble. Badly." It loses points because it seemed a wee bit rushed though.

2 days left until one of the potentially best episodes ever!

I agree. I think that the 45 minute rule is a bit too short nowadays. Also, TBB is the first 45 minute episode since Series 4's Midnight back in 2008! So I guess that it would feel a bit rushed due to the hour-or-longer times of the specials and The Eleventh Hour. I'm just worried that Victory of the Daleks will feel rushed too. :lana:

GTFO Type properly.

Episode was OK. New Daleks look plasticky and lame. Already bored of the "Doctor tries and fails, Amy saves the day" format. That better change. Angry Doctor is good though.

Well... that was odd. I have no clue whether that episode was stonkingly brilliant or a mess.
The pacing to me felt... odd. Not too fast, or too slow. Just... odd.
There were some great elements but overall I felt underwhelmed for some reason, despite the fact there was nothing overtly bad about the episode.
I'm going to have to watch it again to make a judgement... really, I'm pretty damn indesicive for some bizarre reason.

Spoiler: Victory of the Daleks
I loved it. It was a wee bit quick, but apart from that, I thought it was great. We needed more time for the Daleks to be introduced. As in both the green ones and the new ones. And while the new ones look plasticy, I like the new look. The white one especially. Oh, and Amy not knowing about the Daleks were great. 8/10

Oh, and spoiler tags for the Americans, darn it! Do it now!

I think both this episode and last week's proves it - Doctor Who needs to be 60 minutes long all the time.
Otherwise you get bizarrely paced episodes.

The pace felt ok to me. I mean, it was only one episode, not a double one. They had only 45 minutes, after all. But yeah, I agree with Skuly, it does need to be an hour.

These were the highlights for me;

Spoiler: USA, open at your own peril.
"WOULD-YOU-LIKE-A-CUP-OF-TEEEEEAAAAA???", the MULTICOLOURED PRETTY DALEKS <3 and the Jammy-Dodger-Self-Destruct-Button.

I was really quite disappointed in tonight's episode. Initially, I liked the premise of the episode and thought it would be a good one but I just got bored about ten minutes in- where has your wonderfully creepy scriptwriting gone, Mr. Moffat?

IMO, it's a shame that this series has started off with weak scripting- especially seeing as they have a great writer (Silence in the Library = best episode ever XD) so I'm hoping next week's will salvage it a bit.

Just saw the thread and decided to jump in.
Spoiler:
I thought it was great seeing Churchill and the daleks back again, but the new colours make me think "Mighty Morphing Power Daleks". It was a decent episode though but I noticed that pretty much every single episode mentions that Amelia's scottish in some form of joke.

Also did anyone notice the trailer for a new Dr. Who game at last that's coming on 5/6/10 (and by at last I mean the more type of game we've been wanting for awhile)

P.S. Sorry for not using spoiler tags

Yeah, I saw the article for the games a while back. Here's a link~:

Also; I did feel the episode was short and it definitely wasn't as good as the first couple.

Spoiler:
I did love the Doctor raging at the Dalek at the beginning, though. I love his new mean streak. But the Daleks didn't really do anything. HI UNLOCK THE PREGONIRATOR KTHX BAIII~ :|

Use spoiler tags people! Honestly! Think of the people who haven't watched it yet!

But yeah, pacing issues here and there, but I'll rewatch it and stuff. And it should be an hour all the time. >>

Come on Moffat; you can do better then that.

Also, I think these nouveau Dalux (Dulux/Daleks...I try!) are a hybrid between the Doctor Who Movie Daleks (with Peter Cushing in, ofc) and the older Daleks. But they are carrying a bit too much junk in the trunk, if you know what I mean.

GERONIMO! Yea that would be the dumbest catch phrase ever.

Spoiler:
The Doctor meets Professor River Song in the next one doesn't he? That would be interesting as you would of thought that Tennant would of seen her again seeming as she recognised him in the library, how do you think that will work out any way? Didn't they have a diary thing?

Also everyone thinks the new episodes are rushed, maybe they should go back to the old story arc thing where it would be one story divided into (mostly) four 45 minute parts and then you have a months worth of doctor who right there, it would seem excessive though when really all you would need is two 45 minute episodes, but on the other side of things it would be a cheaper/time effective way to film it wouldn't it? Seeming as locations, characters and props could be re-used more, that way they might be able to expand the amount of episodes in a series from around 13 to maybe 20?

Oh and the next episodes a two parter which should be fun (as long as the cliff hanger isn't stupidly weak)
