Most tutorials don't work cause they assume you have a tablet that works as well as theirs does, and that you have an eye for colour already. Do you use Photoshop? I find it easier just to use the luminosity filter on the layers if I'm being lazy. As a rule of thumb though, having a darker and more saturated version of your shadow is alot nicer than a blacker version of it- unless dusky and dull is the colour scheme you want. Some Noir styles may like it. For PW characters though, colour is a must :)

Do you use mouse or tablet to colour?

Excellent :) Well, that makes life real easy then ^^ Slap your line art on a separate layer to your colour, and put all the different layers of colour on a different layer. Start with a large image and shrink it at the end so that your lines smooth out and you can put in detail easily.

I was going to suggest using a lasso or vectors to colour. They take longer, but for a mouse user, it gets better results. You seem to have improved alot since visiting the crit thread which I'm really happy about :) I wish you luck with the shading business. It's tough to learn and I'm still not good at it XD

Thanks. That's kind of how I did that pic. I put the lineart, shading and colors on separate layers and merged them. I use the lasso too, it helps keep everything where I want it.

The way my art style is, it seems that less shading and using solid colors look best on it.

It's good to tryout other methods :) Don't settle on just the one style- try others. I find I work best when I do my shading in pencil and colour over it digitally like this:-
Spoiler: Edgeworth

It was something is discovered that worked REALLY nicely by mistake cause I hated scanning in traditional colours cause they changed, but I also hated digital colouring. This way, I could put minimal digital effort in and get a great output :)Before that, I coloured similarly to you. Flats with some simple shading. Dont' panic- you've got tones of time to try stuff out ^^

IF you want to try the pencil technique there- you make the pencil layer multiply and it keeps it's integrity :) You'd want to be pretty good with shading in pencil to do it though. Other methods may lend better to you though :)

I see. I usually prefer to do colored art digitally since the lines look cleaner to me. Most of the time when I do pencil art it's mostly sketches XD

Spoiler: Sketches- Rosa Kitaki
Image

Spoiler: Notes
Something I doodled up yesterday. I was playing with Rosa's emotions and poses again to see what she would look like with them. I tried to write her Japanese name in Kanji (北木滝美/Kitaki Takimi) and I think I did it OK. I got the name Takimi from Wocky and Pearl's Japanese names. I took the first character from Takita (太) and the last character from Harumi (春) and put them both together. The characters mean 'waterfall' and 'beauty', so you can guess that the name means 'Beautiful Waterfall'.

When I initially came up with the idea for Rosa, I always wanted her to look like Wocky, but have some significant differences at the same time. Rosa has a bit of a snarky and agressive side like her dad, but she's also very calm and sweet like Pearl, her mom. I wanted both of their personalities to mesh together with Rosa, so she wouldn't be too much like one parent.

As far as her appearence goes, she has Wocky's eyes, nose, mouth, hair color and skin color. She even has the whisker thing going on too. However, her frame is comparable to that of Iris and Dahlia Hawthorne, being slender and small in stature. Rosa is actually taller than them, standing at 160 cm (or 5 feet, 3 inches). The only difference though is that her bust is slightly larger, but not by much (Definantely not like Mia's, I assure you.)

As a child, Rosa pretty much acts just like Pearl- Being kind, helpful and also very smart for her age, but didn't struggle with art and spelling as much as Pearl did. In fact, Rosa was a very good speller! She is very emotional too, and when she gets in trouble or feels like she did something wrong she gets upset and sometimes cries. She was a little spoiled by Wocky, though, making her a little bratty at times.

As an adult, Rosa is quite different. She has become more thick skinned and thick headed, just like her dad. But she's still as kind and pure as she ever was. Now knowing about her family history, she's a bit worried about people knowing of her 'strange' blood (Mom was a spirit medium and dad was a gangster in reform. Yeah, some eyebrows might be raised). Not to mention that she had an aunt (Dahlia Hawthorne)that was executed for murdering 3 people and almost her cousin's boyfriend and one of her family friends (Terry Fawles, Diego Armando, Valerie Hawthorne, Doug Swallow and Phoenix Wright).

As for any romantic interests, Rosa doesn't have any at the moment, since she is a bit embarrassed by such subject matter.

As far as her expressions go, I basically mixed up the poses of Wocky, Pearl, Morgan, Dahlia, Iris, Mia (young), and Plum. You might be able to spot those in Rosa's face. She also has plenty of her own expressions.

So, in a nutshell, Rosa is quite an interesting fan character to work with.

Spoiler: Belle Montage (Sketch)

Spoiler: Notes
A prosecutor I made up for a fancase I was working on. She's French and uses French words, but more like in the same fashion that Klavier uses German.

I wanted her to be a flirtatious character, almost in the same vein as April May, but way more subtle.

Oh, and her Japanese name is Miyama Amagi.

Not a very developed character as of now, but oh well.

Spoiler: Rosa Kitaki Without Her Jacket

Spoiler: Notes
Decided to show what Rosa looks like when she takes off her jacket. Also tried a different shading style here, as with the next picture below.

Spoiler: Alita Tiala & Adela Adeal
Image

Spoiler: Notes
Just to avoid confusion, Alita and Adela are actually the same person :meekins:

In my fanfic Every Rose Has Its Thorns, which takes place in 2035, Alita is on the lam with Larry Butz after he helps her break out of jail. Soon after, she changes her entire appearance and changes her name to Adela Adeal to avoid people recognizing her. Unfortunately, we ALL know she's gonna get found out in the end, right? XD

I use a tablet! It's much easier to use than a mouse for drawing. Before I drew all my digital art with a mouse, and looking back at all my old stuff drawn with a mouse, it just looks awful compared to the stuff I've done with my tablet.

Well, the tablet is a more natural way to draw. You can do it with a mouse, but it doesn't makes use of the arm's full movement like a pen does. IT is possible- specially with mice being infrared and not balled like they use to be. The wrist doesn't actually allow for much movement, and if you use your arm to compensate, it becomes unstable. Tablet pens are a much easier movement. Mice shouldn't be out rulled though. I use a mouse primarily for vector art. Tablet pens are too fiddly for that. *nods*

Yes. Mice are especially good for precision purposes, getting in areas that the tablet pen can't reach... Which is why I especially use it for making sprites and doing really small details on artworks.

omg- the arrow keys XD Text based games. Oh man, I'm glad to be past some of that ^^; Joy sticks are a nightmare for anything that isn't a flight sim >.<
