...and then Emerl woke up, and it was all just a dream. THE END.

Except then he took a look at his surroundings, and wished he was still in that dream. There was a strange symbol on his right hand, and the room was rather dark. Emerl waited a few minutes to adjust his eyes, when he heard it. The piercing sound of "AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH" made him decide that he had to start moving now. He looked down to check the time, but his watch had gone. Oh wait, he then noticed that- wait, what is that abomination on my wrist? It didn't look like the sort of thing he would normally wear. It looked like it was broken. He tried to take it off, but the symbol on his hand started glowing, searing with pain. Apparently he wasn't allowed to do that. What sort of messed up game is this? The watch then showed a single word: ESCAPE. Emerl then realised that there were quite a few doors in the room. He tried to open one, but the symbol glowed again, and he was forced to jump back. In the process, he clicked his finger with the shock of it. The watch showed four words now: TRY THE OTHER HAND. Emerl figured that he would have to follow the watch's orders to escape, and opened the door with his other hand. Well, he tried. It was locked. He looked down and saw FOLLOW THE LIGHT. Then he noticed that the watch was reflecting some unknown light source. He took a moment to play with it to try and figure out where the light was coming from. Huh? The reflection vanishes when I move it off this door. Emerl figured that he needed to open that door to progress. He reached for the handle but stopped himself before the symbol activated, clicking his fingers in the process. Wait, fire? This seems awfully similar to a game I played once... Emerl checked his pockets, but didn't find any pins. He then opened the door with his left hand. Fortunately for him, it was unlocked. Then he saw it. FIND A WEAPON. I get the feeling I don't want to be here much longer...

((Emerl's been a name I always use, and for one good reason. I'm not going to explain it here though. Blue Magic was chosen because it seemed to be the simplest way to describe the ability I was thinking of. Finally, I've never played/seen/whatever-it-is Tales of Symphonia. I simply picked Rings of Death because they seemed awesome :godot:

((Not broken, not unfair. I think I'll RP it like in Final Fantasy X. Namely, that only a small set of skills can be acquired, and they can only be used as an "overdrive" move, which would take an arbitrarily long period of time to activate. Besides, I doubt that anything requiring two hands would be a good idea to try...))

Alicia lowered her cane as Vic spoke.

Another young one....

"Look, don't get ahead of yourself. We know this place is dangerous, better than you realise. And until every member of our group is back, we're staying put."

Alicia turned her back on the newcomer, there was a more important matter at hand.

"Yuri, the longer we wait the further away Akilla gets. I'll stay with the rest of the group. You and Abel should go, before Akilla gets too lost."

A fresh wave of faintness washed over her. Putting her cane to the ground Alicia leant heavily on it again, this time barely able to keep herself upright.

Alex glanced in Abel's direction though the darkness made anything hard to makeout "We can't leave, Akilla has just took off towards the screaming" he groaned "And until I hear his screaming joining the chorus we're not leaving him behind" he said "Hopefully he just went back to get more food in which case he won't have gone far..." he said uncertainly praying that Akilla hadn't run further back.

Akilla kept running. Running. Running. Running was his life now. But slowly and surely, his energy levels began to diminish until he had to stop. For the first time in a while, he took a look at his surroundings. He was in a small room, with a low to the ground ceiling that was just over his head. And then he noticed a lump on the ground, covered by a large grey jacket. Dreading what was under, Akilla lifted up the jacket to see a skeleton looking back at him. How cliché.
Not wanting to look at the skeleton any longer, Akilla reached into the pocket of the coat and was rewarded with three small knifes. This must be my lucky day. He placed them into his pocket. Those could be useful later.
He continued walking, for a long time, when he reached a dead end in a cave-like room, with a giant looming wall stopping him. Great. Just great. Akilla reached at the wall, looking for a crevace. He found one, just a tiny crack. Akilla summed up all of the energy he had, and punched the wall. More cracks appeared, but a bit of light began to shine through. It seemed that more damage had been done to Akilla's hand than the wall. A bit of blood began seeping out of Akilla's knuckles, but nothing too major.
The thought of sunlight overpowered Akilla. He punched again, and this time he broke through. However, he just found himself in another room.
This one was weird. There was a giant staircase surrounded entirely by water. The light was created by these odd orbs floating around the room. Something was up.
Curiosity got the better of Akilla, and he cautiously walked up the staircase. The staircase was rough, made out of some kind of stone. Things get weirder and weirder every day. When he reached the top, he saw an even stranger sight. There, on a platform in front of him, was some kind of stone emanating light. His heart pounding, Akilla reached for it, when his heart almost stopped. There, on the platform, Akilla could clearly make out: BEWARE DON'T TOU. Written in blood.
Ignoring the clear warning, Akilla grabbed the circular stone. Once again, memories he was sure weren't even his came flying at him, like an impact. Somebody getting ripped to shreds by two fangs. A hand, reaching up. And once again, that factory he had seen before, in his dreams. And then it stopped, as Akilla heard a tremendous roar. He looked up to see a giant beast with a giant snout, and black fur. Akilla named it the Shadowbeast. Right before he realized that he was in grave danger. The Shadowbeast had two fangs, clearly stained with dry blood.
Akilla screamed as loud as he could, and almost jumped right off of the staircase. He ran as fast as he could out of the little entrance he had created, still holding the orb in his right hand. Akilla screamed again, as the Shadowbeast was closely behind him. Adrenaline allowed Akilla to run, so he ran, and ran, and ran, and ran, all the way back to his little rest spot. The shadow beast then grabbed him, and lifted him up. Akilla screamed in terror, even louder than before. But then the Shadowbeast did something unusual. He let go of Akilla, and grabbed the orb. The orb was covered in blood, so the beast sniffed it, before realising that it only had blood on the outside. Wait, what? Blood? ...! Of course! My hand! The Shadowbeast is attracted to blood!
The Shadowbeast was now finished sniffing the orb, and once again trained his sights on Akilla, but Akilla ran again, until he saw a glorious sight: Yuri and Abel.

As Yuri nodded to Abel as an agreement to his plan, Yuri heard yelling.

"Damn it, that sounds like Akilla!" and instantly his mind shut out everything else. After quickly urging Abel to follow him, he ran towards the screaming. The two quickly run into Akilla a few rooms down, but then Yuri hears something behind him. "W-what the hell is that noise?!" and Yuri turned around to see another beast in the room where he left the others. "Son of a..." Yuri made one step in that direction and the Shadowbeast immediately blocked his path. "Abel, Akilla. We need to beat this thing down as quickly as we can and help the others." Yuri said, and then flung off his katana's sheath, prepared for battle.

Alex's head snapped up as he heard Akilla screaming along with his pounding footsteps slapping the stone ground as he ran watching Akilla and Yuri take off Alex gritted his teeth I'm decking that little kid if he's got himself into trouble he thought moving after his companions seeing everyone else was ok for a while. After a while he stopped hearing a terrifying roar. Geez we barely beat that thing the first time he thought his blood freezing at the thought before drawing his gun and chasing after them. The second he saw Akilla Yuri and Abel he instantly threw up a barrier just beyond them though he had no idea if something was attacking them.

"Got it!" Akilla screamed, as he drew one of the throwing knifes out of his pocket, he had enough time to grunt, "I'm tired of running!", before hurling the knife at the enemy, just in time for Alex to cast a barrier, protecting them.

(In case anyone is wondering I have a total of 4 knifes. So to make it fair, the only knife I can re-use is my special one. Also, Paper, I had an idea. I think that there should be circumstantial bonuses for when you're attacking. Like for example, if someone casts a spell to slow down the monster, and you attack, maybe you could have a bonus attack die?)

As Akilla's screams filled the air around them Alicia had to strongly fight back the urge to run to his aide with Alex, Abel and Yuri.

NO! You are in no condition to do this.

Alicia wasn't sure what part of her was in control, but she soon found herself sprinting after Alex. As the others behind her fell out of sight she flet herself growing considerably weaker.

You idiot.

She stopped and leant on her cane. Despite her best efforts her strength was leaving her. Alicia looked around. The corridor looked different.

I don't remember this corridor.

"Nnngh!"

Her grip on her cane slipped. Alicia grabbed onto the wall to stop herself from falling over. As she put her full weight onto the supporting wall, the wall dissapeared behind her.

"AAAAAAAAAAAHHH!"

Alicia screamed as she fell backward. As her head hit the stone floor, her glasses flew off. Alicia's vision started to blurr as she watched the missing wall move back into place, cutting her off from her glasses and the corridor she had just been running down.

No!!!!

She heard teh familiar growl of the shadowbeast outside in the corridor, it sounded like it was moving towards the group she just left. Alicia tried to get up, still feeling incredibly weak. But instead she fell victim to her weakness and, once again, fell to floor, unconcious.

Emerl had been wandering around the corridors for a while. He hadn't figured out anything though, as all there had been was a maze of darkness. Until now, when he saw a pinpoint of light.
He ran towards it. He got near it, stopped, and quickly took two steps back. For what he saw was a horde of flies, their incessant buzzing making his want to scream. The watch started flashing and beeping urgently, but when Emerl looked at it, it only said the same thing as it had been since he got here: FIND A WEAPON.
So, it's saying that the weapon I've been after is in there? I don't like this one bit... But then again I haven't liked anything else in here either. Let's see, I could use fire to clear them out. But then they'd just fly out towards me, and besides the only thing worse than a fly is the corpse of a fly. Ugh, there's nothing for it, I'll have to go in. Watch, if you do more than just beep at me, remind me to make sure that whoever put me here will feel my wrath, ok?
And with that, he charged in. It was the scariest thirty seconds of his life, but he emerged from it with an unnecessarily large amount of pain coming from the symbol, and an unnecessarily large spiked ring in his right hand. He quickly transferred it to his left hand. The watch beeped happily. At least, I think it sounded happy. Maybe I'm just imagining things. Knowing me, I probably am.

Emerl went back to wandering the corridors, confident that his newfound weapon would be able to help him in his quest. Not that it made his vision any easier. The watch had gone dark and was not displaying anything, so he had to use the symbol-fire to see. Even so, he couldn't see the floor due to his hand being in the way. So it was when he tripped over something and enjoyed more pain coming from the solid ground. Not that he could figure out what it was, but he doubted it would be important. He tried to pick himself up, but the symbol got angry again. Emerl then pushed himself up with his -left- hand and picked his ring back up. He then took a closer look at what he tripped over...
A corpse? Is that what made the scream I heard when I first got here? I've got to be on guard, before I end up like this too.
...
Wait, she (I think it's a she) isn't dead!
Emerl heard a growl coming from what sounded like the wall, but ignored it to see if he could revive this mystery girl. Besides, he had his ring in case she proved to be hostile.
Finally, I'm getting somewhere! That took long enough.

Alicia state of unconciousness grew deeper and deeper as the minutes passed. The physical draining weakness was pulling every ounce of strength out of her. Her mind faded into distant memories of her past.

"Happy Birthday to you. Happy Birthday to you. Happy Birthday dear Joshua, Happy Birthday to you!!"

Alicia watched as Joshua took a deep breath in to tackle the candles on the cake before him. Alicia stood the other side of the table to her son, a camera raised to her face.

"Smile!" She chimed cheerfully.

Flash after flash went off as her camera sprung to life, capturing the moment Joshua Brookes blew out the candles of his cake. Joshua ran to his mother giving her a humungus loving hug.

"Thanks mum! This is the best birthday ever!!"

"You're weclome sweetie" She beamed at her son kissing him on the forehead. "Your Father and I still have one more present for you, now you're a big brave 11 year old!"

The young boy jumped around excitedly as he wathced his father bring out a giant box.

"Here you go son." Marcus Brookes said as he laid the giant box down infront of his young son.

Alicia leaned back into her husbands waiting arms as Joshua ripped off the wrapping to a brand new shiny black bike.

"He's a good kid Marcus, look at him. He's having the time of his life."

As she leant up to kiss Marcus, her face was splattered by a hot liquid.

"MARCUS!!!!!!"

Alicia screamed as her husbands head exploded, millimeters from her face. She fell to the floor covered in hot blood and sinew. Panic filled her entire being. The scene infront of her played out in slow motion. She heard the cocking of a shotgun, she saw teh shooter make his way towards her son.

"JOSHUA!!! RUN!!!!"

Alicia got to her feet, sprinting towards her son. The assailant raised his gun. As the shot rang out, a blinding pain ripped through Alicia's body as once again she fell to the ground. Alicia started coughing up blood as her wound bled out onto the ground.

"MUM!!!! MUUUUUUUM!!!!!"

She heard her son cry out. She could hear the pain in his voice as he ran towards her.

"N.....n..o...." was all she managed to splutter out. Her vision was fading fast.

Still, the image she saw burned into the back of her mind. Her son, Joshua, running towards her, desperate to reach her. Tears pouring down his face. The assailant, cocking the shotgun, running up behind Joshua.

The last thing Alicia remembered before passing out from blood loss was the now famliar feel of hot liquid splattering against her body, and her heart shattering into a thousand tiny pieces.

The stress of the memory forced Alicia into an even deeper state of unconciousness, rendering all of Emerls attempt to revive her, useless.

She's not waking up. She's not dead, but... I don't know what to do now. I'm stuck here by myself. I find someone, but she's unconscious and doesn't look like she's going to wake up any time soon. Over the past couple of days, I've tried to remember some of my own skills, but... nothing. Just the small fire. And I could have sworn I heard a growl not too long ago. I doubt that's a good sign. I've got a ring, but only one. Even if I had a second, I wouldn't be able to use it. So I'm going to need to start capturing skills again. Considering how long I've been in here without seeing anyone or anything, this girl might be my only chance. No, I'm going to have to find a way to get her to wake up. If I don't, I doubt I'll survive very long. This symbol... it's stopping me from dual-wielding the rings like I normally do (but I don't have a second one anyway) and I think it's preventing me from using the skills I already have. If I'm to figure out the secret behind this, I'm going to have to destroy it somehow. But first, I have to survive. There's nothing else I can do, so I'm just going to have to wait and see. Please, wake up...

Abel, Yuri, Alex and Akilla had encounter quite a creature, and only the barrier stands between.

"So, we're fighting this thing? If we are, now's our time to plan. Got any ideas, anyone?" asked Abel.

While the group was protected by the barrier, which was being clawed by the aggressive menace.

Alex groaned "Guys I don't mean to alarm you but when it hits the barrier it drains me a bit so please do something" he said dropping to one knee as another blow struck the barrier This isn't how I'd normally fight, normally I'd have more range, light, some body armour, a helmet....holding up barriers while other people do the fighting.... he groaned aiming his pistol From here the only damage I'll be able to do is if one of them gets run down he thought

((Heh, sorry! I get a bit carried away ^_^))

A warm liquid filled Alicia's mouth, the taste of iron spread across her tounge. She started spluttering and choking. It wasn't long until her eyes flew wide open. As she took a breath in the liquid rushed into her lungs making her cough violently. She rolled over, coughing up the liquid onto the floor.

Blood?!

Once Alicia managed to cough up all of the remaining fluid she took note of what was around her. Her glasses were missing. She couldn't find her cane. There was a bright unnerving fire next to her and....Who the hell was that?!

"Who are you?!" She shouted scrambling to her feet.

Alicia still felt terribly weak and nearly fell back onto her knees again as she stepped back from the dimly lit figure the other side of the fire.

Yuri heard Alicia's screams from the other room. "Damn, what a horrible predicament..." he thought.

Something had to be done, and fast. Stand together, we'll finish this thing with one hit. Yuri said to Abel and Akilla. He pulled his sword back slowly and prepared to use one of his Mystic Artes. I'll need an amazing amount of luck and your assistance for this to work. said Yuri.

The Shadowbeast seems a lot bigger then the other abomination we battled against. It must be fully grown.

"I'll be glad to help, Yuri!" Akilla exclaimed after listening to Yuri's plan. "Just tell me what you need me to do!"
"And Yuri, I think I might have found a way out of here! I'll tell you about it after the fight!"

Alex's barrier was rapidly weakening. Akilla knew that this had to end quickly.

That... was a bad idea. At least it worked though, although I'm not too sure what she would have to say on the matter.

As the girl woke up with a start, coughing and spluttering, Emerl realised that he was in almost complete shadow and took a step forward. That just made her more scared. She stood up, but was clearly having some trouble staying on her feet. Then she half-screamed the words "Who are you?!"
That slightly scared Emerl, and he jumped back. Back into the shadow. Whoops. He then regained his composure and answered the question. "Uh, I'm Emerl. Sorry for how I woke you up, but I couldn't exactly just leave you there... . Not for my sake, and not... for yours. I already noticed the symbol on your hand. I've got an identical one. So... what's your name?"
Emerl half-blushed. He wasn't used to making introductions, especially not after doing something that could be seen as attempted murder. HEY! I was just trying to wake her up! I didn't mean murder...

She looked at the figure who'd stepped fully into the light of the fire.

Sorry about how you woke me up?

Alicia felt a pain in her side from where Emerl had tripped over her.

I guess he must have kicked me or something, that would explain the blood...

She took a moment to calm herself before replying to Emerl.

"I-I'm Alicia, there are more of us with these symbols. We're trying to find our way out of here."

Alicia couldn't hold herself and fell to her knees. Before she knew it she was coughing up blood again.

What the hell?!

As she coughed a pain ran down the right side of her body and the image of the shadow beasts eyes burned into the back of her mind. As the fire flickered infront of her, she felt herself sinking into a state of panic. She closed her eyes shut tightly. The more she panicked, the more she coughed.

Whats happening?!....ok calm down, stress, this is stress. The blood, the weakness, its probably stress.

"I'm sorry about this Emerl." She realised that maybe he felt responsible for this. No, this wasn't anyones fault. "I need to find my cane and my glasses and then we need to rejoin the others. There are creatures out here that we dont want catching up with us."

Alicia silently cursed herself for letting stress get the better of her. She really hoped that Emerl didn't blame himself.

Blood... from the mouth. That's not a good sign. I've still got no skills, she's practically helpless, and she's confirmed that there are "creatures" in here that are hostile. That and there are more than just the two of us, and they all want to escape. Maybe those "others" were the scream I heard coming from behind the wall earlier. Wait... shoot, they might be dead! And I still don't know anything about where I am... Ugh. I spent 16 years of my life figuring out myself, and then just when I finish, this happens. Hmm... huh? She mentioned a... uh oh. This isn't good.

"Uh, I'm not too sure how to say this without causing any more panic, but those items you mentioned? A cane and glasses? Sorry to disappoint, but I haven't seen anything of the sort."

Emerl retreated back into his thoughts, trying to coalesce them. He'd learned over the years that the easiest way for him to deal with stress was just to think things through logically.

So none of this is beneficial to either of us. Well, not quite. She could have died as well as these "others" if I didn't show up, even if I did bungle up her revival. And I need her if I'm to be able to do anything other than swing this ring around with my off-hand. Speaking of which, I haven't had a chance to work out some techniques to use with only one ring yet. Although, with a bit of luck, I won't need one. But considering what this crazy realm has been like so far, it will happen.

Her friends, they're dead. I'm certain they're dead. I can't just tell her that though. No, I'll have to see if I can find them. I can't go off by myself, so I'll have to follow her.

Emerl tried pushing against the walls as well, but nothing happened. He started to wonder if Alicia was just imagining a wall vanishing, but he kept trying until he was certain that they'd tried all the wall sections. Then he gave up. Leaning against one of the walls, he said "It's no u-" when the wall vanished, he lost his balance, and fell through. He picked himself back up and called out through the wall: "IT ONLY WORKS IF YOU AREN'T EXPECTING IT TO!" Wait, then how is she supposed to get through? This isn't good. But then again, has anything been good?

Alicia, still feeling weak leant back against the wall and slid to the ground.

"EMERL, LISTEN CAREFULLY!! WITH YOUR BACK TO THIS WALL WALK RIGHT. YOU'LL FIND THE OTHERS. I'LL FIND ANOTHER WAY OUT!"

As she sat there she watched the flame taunting her. Without her glasses it was almost painful to look at. She sighed.

"I'LL TRY," called Emerl back through the wall. He then proceeded to go in the direction indicated, and then proceeded to trip over a wooden stick. I really need to find a better way to use this fire. Wait, what is this anyway? A... OH! "ALICIA! YOUR CANE'S OVER HERE! YOUR GLASSES ARE TOO!" Emerl hadn't seen the glasses, but he was fairly sure it wouldn't take much searching to find them, and sure enough he did. He pocketed them, shouted "I'LL TAKE THEM WITH ME," and ran off after her friends.

He heard a few cries coming from the room ahead, and considered that her friends might not be dead after all. Then the light coming from his flame suddenly stopped, as if consumed by something, and he ran into a strange spring-like mass. It turned to face him, and Emerl saw two red eyes staring into his soul. Well, they did until they went out, and the... thing... fell to the ground and disintegrated. His flame flickered back into life, and Emerl saw a human figure in front of him. It called out "Great work, Abel!" and then noticed Emerl. There was a silence before he said "Uh, so I'm Emerl. You're one of Alicia's friends, I presume?"
((Just to clarify: papermario, was Yuri or Abel the one who was "already sprinting back to the other room"? Because I'm assuming that it was Abel, and that I'm talking to Yuri))

Akilla followed Yuri into the other room, where he was surprised to see another child that looked about his age.
However, introductions could come later. Right, now, Akilla was in a hurry.
The other boy introduced himself as Emerl, but before any more communication could ensue, Akilla snapped, "We have time for introductions later. Right now, I think I might have figured out our ticket to getting out of this mess. When I entered the room, I had to break down the wall. There was no other method. However, I saw a dead body there. Which means that whoever died, found another way. And if he made it in alive, I think we can make it out. So we have two choices: We can go my way, or continue down our original path. It's your choice."

Alicia rested her head back against the wall, keeping her eyes closed for the moment.

Damn wall.....

She knew she couldn't rest there long. She needed to get back to the others. Using all her strength, Alicia brought herself to her feet and made her way into the darkness ahead of her.

This isn't clever, but i don't have a choice.....

Well, we can't just leave her. Besides, I don't think anyone will be able to last very long by themself, especially with whatever killed that other person wandering about.
