This is a necessary thread. Do you think it's a ladder or a stepladder? And please, no more Phoenix-Miles window-washing comments. *Gant-stares at a certain someone*
Anyways, what's your view? I'm on Team Stepladder. You?

And if anyone wants to make banners, that'd be cool.

I think I side with Phoenix on this one. It's a stepladder. Why call it something other than the name it was given?

Edit: Just curious, but what Phoenix and Miles windowashing comments? That sounds unintentionally...pervy.

=D I-I hope this thread survives... I truly do think it's necessary to have one of these debates on C-R. Where else could we work to solve the eternal conundrum? I know I'm weird, but this was honestly one of the things I was most looking forward to discussing when I joined the site. xD
Although I'm not sure if you should push it, if one or two of these threads were already shut down... :adrian-crunch:

...It's a stepladder.
I'm with Phoenix, on Team Stepladder, for sure.

There's totally a distinction. Specificity is extremely important when conducting an investigation.
What if Phoenix wrote down in the court record (or Edgeworth in the organizer) that there was a "ladder" found in a dark room where a murder occurred?
And then, in court, he needed proof that... uhh... the lightbulb in that room was changed before the murder occurred, so the room was lit during the murder, implying that whoever committed the murder could have done so without the need of a flashlight (xDDD; I dunno)?
It couldn't be proven. It would be a contradiction. The true killer might get away. An innocent person who happened to have been carrying a flashlight could be convicted.
Ladders and stepladders are a matter of life and death!!

Stepladders are awesomer, anyway. So many more potential uses.

:yuusaku: Hmm... I'm unfamiliar with the window-washing jokes... I'm kind of curious... I guess I'll go look it up, yet somehow I feel like I might not want to know...
EDIT: Oh, uhh... I see... I guess it's not inappropriate after all... unless I'm totally missing something... If I am, please let me live in ignorance. =P

Let us not dwell in past mistakes. Let us continue pressing forward in this eternal fight for power and survival.
~Me, just now
Let's ignore certain uncaring-about-this people (better choice of words?) and continue with this admittedly slow-starting thread about distinguishing ladders and stepladders.
Asa is right. That could soooo happen. That's why Maya isn't an attorney. Because a case like that would be terrible for her.

>< Ehhh, I don't want to label anyone a hater, or be in a fight... Isn't it at all possible to find a way to debate about (step)ladders that would prove this thread worthy? I'm really trying!! There's got to be a way!
Yes, we've all got to team up~!

Steel Turnabout wrote:

Haha, good point!
And it also explains why Gumshoe, another unenlightened soul stuck on Team Ladder, isn't...you know, as competent as he could be...in his investigations... :gymshoe: /understatement

But Edgeworth is a (good) prosecutor/investigator, and he doesn't understand the distinguishment... :pealshock:
That would be so awesome if it was a plot point in GK2. ...Even though I know it won't happen. :-P

I wonder why Edgeworth has a ladder instead of a stepladder in his office. I know he says he doesn't like either one, but the truth is that ladders are much less stable. That's dangerous -- it'd be much easier for him to fall off while getting one of those files from his top shelf with a ladder. Someone (like Phoenix) needs to sit down and have a long talk with him to convert him to Team Stepladder. Edgey is too smart to stay unenlightened.

Maybe it's just because stepladders can be more dangerous in another way... come to think of it, a stepladder would make a good murder weapon. It would hurt to get whacked in the head with one of those. /another understatement

Oh man, Steel Turnabout, I hate to be rude but... You post unnecessarily quite a bit more than she does. That was a bit hypocritical of you.

Ahem. Moving on.

I think Maya just calls it a ladder to get a rise out of Phoenix. XD Apollo, on the other hand, mistakenly believes in a false identity of this object.

What does Kay call it, again?

Both are equally good murder weapons in any case that calls for them. (The only difference is that stepladders are more useful for picking up and hiding somewhere.)

I'm gonna shoot the logical smart-ass in the foot by asking: What exactly is this about anyway?

Ahaha, that's probably true! :maya: I can believe that.
But Apollo seriously needs to spend a little more time under Phoenix's mentorship. (Because, clearly, THIS is the most important lesson you can learn from a genius ex-lawyer.)
Come on, even Trucy can tell the difference by now!

Kay is on Team Stepladder! :keylady:
But she says she prefers rope ladders most of all, because they're of greater use to a thief. Stepladders are too heavy to carry around.

Wh-what do you mean...? :keiko: Of course, it's about continuing the most provocative debate ever instigated by video game dialogue: whether or not the stepladder and the ladder should be rightfully distinguished as unique objects!
Whenever you examine a stepladder in a PW game, the characters debate about it.
Edgeworth, Gumshoe, Maya, Ema, and Apollo settle for calling it a ladder.
Phoenix, Trucy, and Kay rebut that it ought to be called a stepladder.
What do you think?

Naw, just kidding. In Ace Attorney, notice how the protaganists are split up into two seperate but equal branches of law enforcement. These are their stories. sides: Stepladder and Ladder? Like, "Hey, Maya! Check this stepladder out!" "That's a ladder Nick! You gotta look at the big picture, narrow cultural close-minded-ness and all that jazz." This is the CR form of that.

If you can't pay attention when certain threads get locked, you probably shouldn't be starting threads at all. But that's just one person's opinion, and fyi, it has nothing to do with hating.

I know they got locked, as is this ones fate because it got side-tracked. My fault. Poor choice of words. Gonna edit that.
Didn't mean to sound mean, just this topic needs attention, which is my opinion.

Okay, no, I don't get it. Is it a debate over normal ladders and stepladders?

That depends on how the "ladder" is built, mostly, but I'm not gonna go into detail on that since this thread's most likely gonna get locked after I post this. (QUIT FORESHADOWING!! *slaps herself*)

N-no, don't jinx it like that! :adrian-crunch:

Isn't there something we can do to make this thread worth keeping?
I don't understand how the previous threads can be said to have gotten that off-topic, when only a few posts had been made on each... So I get the sinking feeling that the concept itself is just deemed not important enough for a thread about it... :sadshoe:

But, if there's a solid purpose behind the thread...
Like:
Everybody states their position (ladders or stepladders), and, optionally, their reasoning behind it (and only in a way that connects to the game)?
If we stay absolutely rooted on-topic, then...?
Do you think it could be okay?
Because it really is fun to discuss...

...Haha, I think it's kind of interesting how you were confused about the topic "ladders vs. stepladders" -- was it because your brain processed them as being the same? :will: You must be on Team Ladder! See, we've got multiple viewpoints being discussed already!

IMO If you want to make a thread about a topic that already got locked, you need to ask a mod to unlock it, and explain why is worth unlocking.

Probably mods are merciful this time and let this thread alive.
Probably mods are asleep.
In that case, posting some CP.

B-but I already posted in it..... I'M SORRY!! *WAH!*
:nixiesob:

Sadly, since I don't have a clear idea of what the discussion really is about, I can't help there. (Of course staying on topic would help it, but would everyone stay on topic? Probably not.)

But the difference between ladders and step ladders, is that stepladders are normally used for reaching up to spots that can't be reached by average-to-short height people. Ladders are used for really, really high places, like second story windows or lights in a building. (Yes, I'm using logic. Sue me for it.)

Personally, they should just call them whatever they feel like calling them. But I don't know which team is for which, since I don't know which case this is based from in AA.

1-5: stepladder in the underground parking garage (Phoenix vs. Ema)
2-3: stepladder in circus (Phoenix vs. Maya)
3-2: stepladder in Lordly Tailor basement (Phoenix vs. Maya)
3-5: stepladder in Hazakura courtyard (Phoenix vs. Gumshoe)
4-2: stepladder in Meraktis's garage (Trucy vs. Apollo)

:wacky-edgy: You think so...!?

Well, all stepladders are ladders, but not all ladders are stepladders.
(It's like squares and rectangles.)

So, you could still argue the ladder side, if you wanted.
You sound like a true Team Ladder member! :keiko:
You don't have to convert if you don't want to; stand proud by your teammates! :maya: :eh?: :edgeworth: :odoroki: :scientific:

On the other hand, the distinction that I and the rest of Team Stepladder upholds (I assume) is that a stepladder is self-supporting; it has two halves, and so can stand on its own without being leaned against something.

I think your logic is sound that ladders are normally used for tall buildings and stuff -- because, well... I don't think anyone makes stepladders that tall... and, besides, when it's against the side of a building, the self-supporting side of a stepladder is unnecessary. And stepladders are indeed for shorter distance and indoor use, because they have more practical uses around the house... and apparently, around the circus, garage, courtyards... :-P

Steel Turnabout wrote:

Eh? Which one? :eh?: Is it the one in 2-3? I just listed that because I saw the stepladder in the scene, but, to be honest, I can't remember what the dialogue was for that particular one. I remember the rest, though.

Well, it just depends on what you're used to believing it is, so I'll just continue ladders and stepladders whatever I want to call them.

HOLD IT!! Remember the saying that walking underneath ladders is bad luck? What if whoever made that saying was intending it for ladders AND stepladders??

Eh? Which one? Is it the one in 2-3?

No, the one in 3-5. You just blather about the wall. Stupid wall.
...Ah! You know, when I played the game, I was really annoyed at that too!
In investigation mode, it is impossible to examine it.

But...
Spoiler: 3-5
...while you're using the metal detector, you can trigger a dialogue about it between Phoenix and Gumshoe!

Unfortunately, I didn't trigger it when I played, because I totally by accident picked the right thing I was supposed to metal-detect (the staff) on the first try. (I had no idea that the staff was even the right thing... I was like, wait, nooo, forget the staff! Gimme a second to check the stepladder, PLEEEEEASE! :accordion-head: )

But, afterwards, I actively searched online for the dialogue, because I knew there had to be something.

Lo and behold, it was probably one of the most amusing incarnations of the debate yet:

:gymshoe: : Look, a ladder!
:phoenix: : That's a "step"-ladder.
:eh?: : What's the difference? Looks like a normal ladder to me, pal.
:nick: : (Surely everyone knows the difference... I mean, they're pretty ordinary objects...)
:gumshoe: : I've met plenty of guys like you, always picking on the smallest details. The vegetable store guy near my place does it all the time. He even corrects me when I ask for a head of lettuce. "That's a cabbage," he says. I'm telling you, they're the exact same thing!
:ack: : No they're not! They're completely different!
:gymshoe: : You have to plant both of them firmly in the ground before they can grow, don't you? Listen. You gotta take a step back and look at the bigger picture sometimes. Otherwise you could miss a really important clue. That's advice from a pro, pal!
:nick: : (...The last person I need advice from is this guy in front of me.)

...Ooh, about the superstition thing -- very interesting. I'll do some research and possibly address it in my next post. :keiko:

You can thank my urban-legend-loving brain for that idea right there. <3 I LOVE MEH SOME SUPERSTITIONS AND LEGENDS~!BACK ON TOPIC.

This is a weird debate, I'll admit that.

Okay, so, it's supposedly unlucky because you're disrupting a "Holy Trinity"; in that case, the triangular shape could apply to either a stepladder on the ground or a ladder against a building. The superstition, then, probably refers to both.

But, religion aside, I'd personally say that the primary misfortune involved in walking under a ladder or stepladder is the possibility of it falling and crushing you. :-P

So, connecting that superstition to PW: ...How many (step)ladders has :salute: been crushed by?
My guess is...uh, a lot. :maggy:
But probably more ladders than stepladders, because I think ladders seem less stable and more likely to fall.
That's just one of the many reasons that I think stepladders are awesomer.

Oh, and I was thinking, about the strangeness of Edgeworth being on Team Ladder (because, logically, he should be able to tell the difference)...
The same could be said for Ema. :scientific: Scientifically, she should be taking note of the crucial differences in their physical structure. :notes:

All these smart people arguing against the distinction... Maybe there's something we're missing? Being able to look at the "basic nature of things"... is that some sort of secret to truly great investigation?

Wait... That's what Gumshoe says, too.
So... ...nah. :gymshoe:

Yeah, physics always sucks when it comes to legends and superstition. *a la BUTTERED CAT PARADOX! XD)

But what if..... And roll with me on this, but what if someone brainwashed them into not seeing the difference? Like maybe..... :chinami: ?

... :ema-shock: !

Now THAT'S something worth debating! :moe-laugh:

So... Dahlia just wanted to make Phoenix's life miserable by influencing several of his close friends to constantly torment him with his greatest pet peeve? :chinami: Ha ha ha...

If I had to pick a culprit for brainwashing, though, it'd probably be... :hair:
Think about it: Edgeworth, Gumshoe, and Ema have all witnessed the infamous "Gant stare"...
...and possibly Apollo too...
The only one left on Team Ladder who hasn't met Gant is Maya... And Maya, as has been mentioned on this thread, probably just enjoys bringing it up to have a little fun messing with poor Nick. :-P

...Hey! Do you want to speculate about what teams the other members of the AA cast would be on? ^^
For example:
:pearl: = Team Ladder -- because she'd take Maya's side, not realizing that Maya probably just says it as a joke.
:franny: = Team Stepladder -- because she's perfect; she would have to be as specific as possible! Also, she'd seize the opportunity to point out any technicalities that expose a flaw in Edgeworth's logic and win even the most meaningless argument.

You know it's possible!! She's just OOZING with the ability to do that! OOZING!!!!

But Gant's a good choice too........ Wait..... No..... No! NO! NONONONONONONONONONONO!!! I WILL NOT ACCEPT GANT BEING POLLY'S FAHZA FATHER!!! *shot for overreacting*

.....I wouldn't really know who else to put on the teams. Since I haven't played the games yet, I have no idea on how everyone else is and what their possible opinions are.

Oh!! You haven't played the games!? I'm sorry!
But, you know, you've really gotta play as soon as possible! There are spoilers everywhere around here!
*hurriedly spoiler-tag-ifies the following post*

Well, I've been thinking, and this is what I've come up with...

:karma: = Stepladder. For similar reasons of obsessive perfectionism like Franziska.

:keiko: = Stepladder. She probably has the dictionary definition of each term easily accessible through her circuitry, so she'd have to know the difference.

:larry2: = Ladder. Because... because, yeah. xD I can just see him annoying Phoenix with it.

:godot: = ...hmm, this one is tougher, but I'm gonna go with Ladder. I don't think he's uptight enough to care about the distinction.
"Ha! You never learn, do you, Trite? Always look at the basic nature of things... That's one of my rules."

:udgy: = Ladder. Except he wouldn't have a justification for it; he's just clueless.

:payne: = Ladder. Same -- he's not attentive enough to notice the difference.

:wellington: = Ladder.
Spoiler: 2-1
Yeah. If you can't tell a banana from a baseball glove, surely you can't tell a ladder from a stepladder.

:meekins: = ...you know...for some reason, I'm actually going to say Stepladder. xD
I think he's there to annoy Edgeworth more than to annoy Phoenix, and so he should have the opposite stance as Edgeworth.
"Sir, with all due respect, sir, I'm obligated to tell you...THAT'S A STEPLADDER!"
--or--
"I've been corrected many, many times before... But this is the first time I've gotten to correct somebody eeeeeeelse!"

:yuusaku: = Stepladder.
Spoiler: 3-2
For the same reasoning as Kay: great thieves are bound to be experts on tools that can be used to break into buildings. :Maskdemaske:

:adrian: = Stepladder. She just seems like the responsible type that would be conscientious enough to note the difference. Besides, she worked next to one in Lordly Tailor, so she has experience with the topic.

:will: = Stepladder. He had one around in the Steel Samurai studio, so, similarly, I think he knows from experience.

:zenitora: = Ladder.
Spoiler: 3-3. IMAGINE IF YOU WILL: Tigre and Phoenix are standing next to each other, "indistinguishable" like twins...
Maya: Whoa -- it's Nick and Xin Eohp! But...which is which!?
Tigre: It's me, I tells youse! I'm da real Phoenix Wright!
Phoenix: (M-maya, don't tell me you really can't tell...!?)
Maya: A-ha! I know how to prove it once and for all! *points dramatically at a random stepladder in the vicinity* Guys, look! What do you call that thing over there?
Tigre: Youse blind? That's a LADDER!
Phoenix: ...Actually, that's a stepladder.
Maya: Well, I've found the real Nick. Buuut... you know, maybe I ought to keep Xin Eohp around instead. At least he doesn't judge things based on narrow-minded cultural assumptions!
Phoenix: .........;;;

:damon: = Ladder. As I suggested earlier, he brainwashes people into sharing his mindset.

EDIT:
Spoiler: a few more~...
:mia: = Ladder.
"Phoenix! You need to think outside the box!"
Phoenix: (...Et tu, Mia...?)

:that-b-word: = Ladder. Anything to put her at odds with Feenie.

:ayame: = Stepladder. Anything to distinguish her from Dollie (and thus make her likable to Feenie).

:gregory: = Ladder. He's open-minded in that way. And of course he passed the belief onto his son.

:lotta-smug: = Ladder. ...Yeah. Hey, as you can see above, it's not always dumb people that I associate with Ladder! It's complicated. But I think you understand.

:pokeman: = Stepladder. Not only because she works with one in the Steel Samurai studio, but she's also the responsible type like Adrian.

:ditz: = Ladder.
"Like, a ladder? Isn't that, like, one of those things that have, like, steps?
So, a stepladder... Like, what's the difference?
"

:Mimi: = Stepladder. ...She's no ditz.

:wendy: = Ladder.
"It's whatever you say it is, Edgey-poo~!"

:regina: = Ladder. Too sheltered and naive to know the difference. Plus, she gets along with Maya, so I think they'd think alike.

:mareka: = Stepladder. By affiliation with her husband.

:mattphone: = Ladder. Because he's not Juan.

:juan: = Stepladder. Because he's not Matt.

:punch-ben: = ...I'm not sure which is which, but I'm sure that whatever Ben believes, Trilo believes the opposite.

*laughs* That's okay!! I don't really care if there's spoilers around. The more spoilers around, the more I can learn about the games before I play them! Besides, once Christmas rolls around, I'll be able to start getting the games for my DS!

.... But......
Tigre sounds like a f'in idiot! @-@
And Ron... <3 That would be his choice!

Team Stepladder. What's the harm in applying a more specific term to a more specific kind of object? :phoenix: :minuki: :keylady:
