Wow. Just. Wow. I don't think anyone anticipated such a bombshell yesterday.

Here's all the information we've gotten thus far on the collaboration between Level-5 and Capcom.

Last month, we caught wind of a tweet by Jiro Ishii of Level-5.

Jiro Ishii wrote:
Huh? Oh, "Gyakuten XX". I’m making it, with Takumi-san!

The tweet was soon denied by Jiro, but when put together with the rumors from E3 about Capcom working on a big collaboration project, it made sense that Level-5 was the collaborator in question. A lot of people hoped, myself included, but didn't seriously think that Professor Layton was the subject in question. But to everyone's fairytale delight. It indeed was.

Now here's what we know.
  • The game is exclusive to the 3DS. Remember. The 3DS is not the DSi 2 or whatever. The 3DS is to the DS, as the DS was to the GBA. This is Nintendo's next generation handheld.
  • Level-5 actually approached Capcom on the project. They thought they'd be denied because it would take focus away from Gyakuten Saiban 5.
  • Takumi was actually thrilled at the idea, particularly since it would be his first collaboration project.
  • Takumi is in charge of the scenario.
  • As the name of the game suggests, this is a "vs" title.
In fact, as you can see from this screenshot, Layton and Luke appear to be using the Prosecutor's bench. VS indeed!
    Image
  • The game takes place in a magical fantasy realm independent of either game series' universes. So don't worry, your little brains don't have to worry about this breaking your head cannon.
  • The game is expressed as being 100% Professor Layton and 100% Gyakuten Saiban. Expect lots of puzzles and contradictions.
  • If Phoenix looks like a giant to you, it's likely because they decided that in order to keep things equal across the fandoms that Phoenix would be as tall as Professor Layton + Top hat. (Personally, I think that Phoenix being as tall as Layton + 1/2 top hat would be plenty, but that's me.)
  • The game's story involves two characters of interest. A woman suspected of witchcraft, who also appears to be the game's defendant; and a mysterious man called the storyteller, we never see the face of who has a book that rewrites the world.
  • No word yet on an English release, but Capcom-Unity is claiming that if you get enough replies to their topic they'll seriously consider it.
  • Also, in what appears to be a Court-Records.net exclusive, we've got the following Layton vs. Attorney art to share.
    Image Image
These images are hidden away on the promotion site and are inaccessible to normal viewers. Concept art? Actual events? You decide.

That's all. Oh, and enjoy the subbed trailer. Update: Also enjoy it subbed on YouTube

As an aside, the trailer has YouTube annotation subs on it now, so if Overstream doesn't work, try the direct YouTube link:

Also, fdlhgsdjghg I'm still reeling from this. I know it'll be a long time until we do, but I can't wait to see gameplay.

I've never played the Layton games, but this definitely looks worth getting! In fact, I'm probably going to get into Layton just to make this game that much more significant.

Yeah, same here. I'm a huge Ace Attorney fan, which is why I'm getting this if/when it hits US shores, but I'm planning to try the Layton games soon for that reason.

Also, Nick needs to learn to ride a horse. :phoenix:

Luke is experiencing the thrills of buttsecks in that picture, most obviously. Phoenix was unsuccessful at such a feat, as Maya fled, leaving Phoenix as such.

That shall now be the reason Phoenix is riding his horse backwards!

Would you rather Phoenix be a victim of bad fanfic worthy circumstances, or a man completely unable to ride a horse?

I'd personally prefer he was chasing tail. It makes him seem like more of a man.

[EDIT]

Also, why do we have three topics on the main page relating to this? This topic is almost pointless. I would recommend merging this thread, the one made yesterday and the one on the Gyatuken XX rumor thread.

First off, I'd rather he be incapable of riding a horse. I prefer slapstick any-day, never mind how sick it is what came out of your keyboard.

Second, the point of making that topic was for the front page. There is a ton of info we've gotten and in 8+ pages. No one should have to weed through all of that. Yesterday's topic was the WTF OMG topic. Today's is everything consolidated. Not everyone visits the forums. Also, merging the threads is out of the question, as the 8 page long topic is older, it would consume this one chronologically, thus defeating the whole purpose of this topic.

No pass.

Phoenix's not weird enough to do that to Maya, and Maya sure as hell would not have run away without a fight (with the fight part actually being Maya just slapping Phoenix a few times).

Not being able to ride a horse isn't slapstick in any fashion. Also, sick? I know you've hung around enough on the web to know that's pretty softcore what I typed. Or are you just some kind of a moralfag these days Wooster?

And no one should have to sit at an already extremely laggy home page whilst a gazillion redundant images load on the main page. Not to mention it stretches the home page to no end.

So the fact that Phoenix ended up on the horse backwards didn't translate to him being attacked whilst she escaped?

Phoenix Wright, it is now SRS BSN. "Oh lordy, don't corrupt our characters!"

[EDIT]

Geez, I was just having a bit of fun. Lighten up, take a chill pill, etc etc.

More like it translated to "He just sucks at riding horses." Then again, I do too (I've only ridden once) and I probably shouldn't be saying anything, so, before this escalates into anything else, I'll just shut my mouth right here and now.

From the trailer, it seems that Prof Layton is the prosecutor. Just as well, since Edgeworth is busy with his own game and all, I'm sure he won't be jealous or anything XD

But yay return of Lawyer!Nick! He is really tall. Layton looks the same height as Maya, but I guess his hat is part of him, haha

I'm glad people are checking out Professor Layton because of this game (because it's quite fun and awesome). And I'm sure fans of the Professor Layton games are checking out Ace Attorney because of this as well, yay!

I wonder how the gameplay would work though. You walk around as Layton finding and solving puzzles, and then as Phoenix Wright when you need to find contradictions?

Also, I wonder when this game will be coming out, considering that AAI2 is in the works, and also Prof Layton 5 is supposedly a launch game for the 3DS. I'm assuming this thing will come out after those two?

Poor Apollo, nobody cares about him XD

No wonder Phoenix never got his driver's license. If that's how he is on a horse, I'd hate to see him behind the wheel of a car.

WHOA! This is great! Although I have some thoughts of my own...

Opinion 1: Crap it! 3DS exclusive? Seriously! Yeah sure, they might have an English version, but what about DS owners? The ORIGINAL Wright fans? They should at least make it up to them, since they're going to miss all the awesomeness.

Opinion 2: It makes the 3DS worth all the money.

He tends to drive his bike with a fried-egg-toast in his mouth and 5 tons of baggage on his back. I think that makes him a peril on the public streets. Nick should stick to Taxis....

I'm actually surprised Phoenix isn't accused of anything, dressed like he is. I mean, geez, those are the Dark Ages! They burned everything that even breathed suspiciously on the stake!

I mean, Maya could excuse herself by saying "I'm a female Sage from the far east, the mystical land of Nippon, and will haunt your city if you dare to harm me!" but Nick sticks out in his suit...

Haha, he totally does. It's not just the suit, but also the hair XD Layton sort of sticks out in his outfit as well, but not as much as Nick. I think it's 'cause while the story is set in neither the AAuniverse nor the PLuniverse, but the art style and the setting is closer to Prof.Layton's universe.

btw, I think Wooster owes us a hat-eating :D

Also, this is a great marketing strategy. Any fans of Professor Layton or Ace Attourney that don't know about the other series will be encouraged to play it, or at least check it out, which means more money for Capcom and Level 5.

I hope the voice acting turns out really good. That part of the game could either be epic or detrimental to whole experience.

I have faith in them for getting great voice actors. if they let Level 5 take over that aspect it could definitely make for a good cast. but Still- there are always chances of something being bad.

I'll be 'very' surprised if we don't learn more about GS5 in the next 8 months. Seriously. We've had more mentions of GS5 in the past two days then we've had in the past two years. Granted, some of those comments have been from Level-5. However, with Layton's install base, the gamers are going to be hankering for a new lawyer game.

Totally, I've seen a lot of comments that "I've played one and not the other, but now I'm gonna check that one out". And I even have a friend who said he hasn't played either game, but he might jump on the bandwagon and check these two games out just because of the crossover =D

If the trailers are any indication, I trust them to find good voice actors. The English dub, if it happens (which I certainly hope it will), I hope will be well-done as well. I liked the English voices for Professor Layton, so I trust them to do well for Phoenix and Maya too...

*fingers crossed*

So, can we assume that this will be out soon after the 3DS is out? Or is release date still something totally unknown?

We really don't know. As far as I know, there isn't even a release window. But I think we can expect a semi-late 2011 release rather than a close-to-launch release.

EDIT: Also, Joystiq recently posted the following article regarding the game:

Joystiq wrote:
If you were surprised by the announcement of a Professor Layton and Phoenix Wright crossover game (WHAT), you're not the only one. Even Capcom's global head of production, Keiji Inafune, exhibited some disbelief over the adventurous collaboration in a recent interview with Japanese mag Famitsu (translated by Eurogamer).

"I thought it would be impossible," he said, citing the careful handling of the Phoenix Wright character within Capcom, as well as creator Shu Takumi's insistence on trying new things (see: the upcoming Ghost Trick: Phantom Detective). "Nobody but Hino could have thought of it." Akihiro Hino, CEO of Level-5, was apparently instrumental in conceptualizing and then realizing this 3D battle of the brains. And there will be a bumping of heads between the two logic-minded protagonists, Inafune said, "before they join hands and take on a really big challenge."

Whether you're rooting for the spiky hair or the fabulous top hat, you'll be happy to know that neither Capcom nor Level-5 seem satisfied with a meet-and-greet cash-in between their cherished properties. "It wasn't a case of licensing out the Phoenix Wright characters and demanding our licence money. That isn't a collaboration, and users would see that," Inafune said. "For this standalone game, we wanted to create a great history, which would have been impossible if both parties were not fully involved."

Basically: this isn't just a cash-in crossover (although I'm pretty sure that's one of the reasons why it was made), they're actually building it into a well-thought amazing game that could stand on itself. Just in case we hadn't noticed.

Alright, thanks. I suppose late 2011, early 2012 sounds right. ( I hope it's not something like 2013. <_< )

So, this will be updated as more info is collected, right?
That was an absurd question.

Well, lets take a look at how long between announcements and delivery.

It took 6.5 months for Japan to get Professor Layton and the Unwound Future, and I'm sketchy on this one, but 8 months for Apollo Justice. Remember this is all for Japan, and independent of English releases.

I'd say, considering that Level-5 is working on that 3DS Layton game, that it's on the 3DS which is bound to confound the developers as it's paving new hardware, plus the whole collaboration aspect, they've got to figure out who does what, and I assume there's going to be some internal power squabbling. Delivery by this time next year sounds reasonable.

On the other hand, when we got Apollo Justice all we had was a unidentifiable cut out of Apollo at E3. Where as in this case we've got Level-5's art and movies. They've got a lot ironed in stone.

But... for all that we've been awed with. We haven't seen any screenshots, no gameplay footage.

Add to it that Capcom doesn't think any of its titles will make the launch window. I'd say that fall sounds like a reasonable date for Japan.

This is very well said. From what I know of Level-5 they do well with making opening movies and what not, however we all know that gameplay itself is another matter entirely. It could get ugly, and very complicated in its entirety. Really, the artwork and movies tell us almost nothing about the game itself. It could just be starting or they could be pretty well into it, if I'm not mistaken. I really do hope that the two systems don't clash. While the games are similar in aspect, the gameplay itself is totally different. Now that I actually am thinking about this, it could take a VERY long time just to work out the system. I hope they later clarify and say that they have a system down. Or has that already been said, and I have somehow missed that part?

Doesn't that mean that they're taking the characters and working everything else from scratch? I have no doubt it will be well thought out as intended, however, if this takes place in a independent universe, than doesn't this mean that it has no real bearings on either series. Do you guys think they'll just throw a bunch of plot holes (think I am using the term correctly) in there, and not explain them? (I really hope not.)

Also, we still have no idea if anyone else from the PW or PL universe will make an appearance, right?
(If I am posting in the wrong topic for this sort of post let me know please. ^^; )

Edit: How can it be 100% of both series? Any ideas guys? I'm picturing something like Hotel Dusk type gameplay maybe in that aspect?

I could see "puzzles" and "contradictions" working very well together. Say you have a Layton-type puzzle you have to solve, but you notice that certain conditions or directions or parts of the puzzle make solving it conventionally impossible. It contradicts something that should be there, and you would have some way of presenting evidence Ace Attorney-style to point out the contradiction in the puzzle and correct it, then go on solving the puzzle.

I've never played any of the Layton games, but I've heard about them on here, and how they are an amazing combination of wits, and strategy. It's more then worth a buy, but I'll also have to buy a 3DS if they decide to localize this game. Oh Well.
