And I do mean *girl* gamers. We have a gender tag now, you know. :sawit:

Do any of you ladies still get weird looks in game stores? I'm not trying to start a debate about sexism or anything like that, I'm just curious if "girl who plays video games" is still that unique of a title that it warrents surprise or confusion. On the interent it's no trouble finding other girl gamers, but in real life I still get the feeling that whenever I walk into a game store, the guy behind the counter never expected to see me.

EXAMPLE TIME:

Two years ago I was at a tiny con in my area called Youmacon. While waiting nearly two hours for the masquerade to start, I hung out with the guy in line with me, and we chatted (I was cosplaying The Boss at the time). Once he got over the surprise that I was, in fact, several years older than him, he was even more surprised to hear that I like games like Metal Gear and Devil May Cry. He said, "I don't know any girls who play video games."

For the record, this was not an unfortunate looking individual. He was very nice and kinda cute--not the kind of gamer that spends all day playing Counterstrike with G4 in the background, in his parent's basement (or something). He knew lots of girls. Just none that gamed.

More recently, I went to a Gamestop looking for Godhand. They didn't have it, but the guy called up the EB a few blocks down and asked them to hold their copy for me. The guy working there gave the best "YOU'RE the one looking for Godhand?" face when I came in. That one gave me a little chuckle.

But yesterday was an especially strange one. I called up a different Gamestop this time, and asked if they had a copy of Odin Sphere in. The guy mumbled something including "sure" so I asked him to hold it and drove out with my sister. It turned out the copy they had was HIS used copy, which he'd just brought back. So as I reached for my money, he suddenly felt the need to warn me:

"You know this isn't like a Square RPG, right?"

We hadn't really been talking at that point, so I was a little confused, and assured him "Yes, I know." I thought he might have been trying to warn me that it's not that great a game or something (I've read several reviews that took points off for being very repetative and having lag issues), but then he continued to explain that it was 2D, side scrolling, beat-em-up--not a "normal" RPG, without any reference to whether it was any good.

He was giving me that "I don't think this is really what you want" look.

I still can't figure out if HE bought the game without realizing what it was, and for some reason assumed I was buying a game I knew nothing about, or if he couldn't grasp the concept that being short and female does not deter me from playing excessive button mashers.

In any case, stuff like that (weird looks and unwanted advice) happens somewhat often when I'm out getting games, mostly when it's action titles. Do any of the rest of you girls still run into stuff like this, off the internet?

And guys, if you have something relevant to add, I suppose you can post too. :redd:

I don't play that many videogames, because I think pretty slowly so my reflexes aren't great, but I still go by Gamestop every once in a while, and yeah, the guy there kinda looks at me weird. So I drag my brother along with me, and then they don't question anything.

You cosplayed the Boss?! That's awesome... hopefully this is relevant enough.

*thinks thinks*

Oh! I went games shopping with a friend who is female once. When I came to the front desk the guy said something about how it must be boring for my girlfriend if I bring her games stores. We were both "WTF!" and I explained how she isn't my girlfriend. Afterwards he had an "Okaaaay. Weird." look on his face.

Yes,that happens all the time with me. Like when I picked up a violent video game (I can't remember what it was anymore) the guy at the counter asked if I knew what the game was about. I nodded and just put it on the counter. He then asked,"Don't you want a game like Animal Crossing?". I said "No,this game is fine." As I left the store all of them gave me a weird look. But I suppose it's kind of strange for a girl like me, cuase I look like one of those girly-girls who love fashion, and celebrity gossip. (I'm not trust me). So I guess seeing a girl like me playing games like Resident Evil, and Manhunt is weird to them.

Sometimes I get odd looks, sometimes I don't.

When I bought my DS and got Super Mario with it, the assistant looked at me, kinda with a "yeah, I knew you'd buy that" sort of look. WTH is so 'girly' or whatever about that?!

..... But when I got Resi Evil on Gamcube, I didn't notice getting weird looks from anyone......

I've spent alot of time in stores buying games, but I've never had anyone give me a weird look, or say anything to me assuming I don't know what I'm looking for. I don't recall getting any reaction at all, even when I picked up RE4 or the WoW Burning Crusade expansion. *shrug*

I've never had that happen when we've gone into a store to buy a videogame, maybe because my husband is with me. :edgy: Granted, we buy most of our videogames online and not in a store but, the times we've bought games at a store, I've never received odd looks.

I'm very surprised to hear that such nonsense still exists; with the amount of girl players on the Internet, you'd think it wouldn't be such a novelty. I don't understand it myself.

i guess its the age of the girl + the game that they buy, as there is still this stereotype bout girl gamers

for example on this site theres a larger percentage of younger vs older females

I'm not a really big gamer (lack of console + little interest in the more violent genres has limited my choices), and because of it I don't often wander into a game store. But about half the time I do venture into the local GameStop, everyone in the building drops what they're doing and watches me until I disappear behind a row of games. Admittingly, I don't know if it's because they're amazed that a girl wandered into the store or because I look suspicious to them somehow.

They almost always ask me if I need help looking for something as soon as I set foot in the shop, though. I like to think they're just being polite and professional, but part of me suspects that they think I'm too much of a n00b to know what a [insert platform here] game looks like. :nick:

That happens to me all the time. Especially in GameStop. The guys that work there always look at me like I'm in the wrong place. They ask me if I'm waiting for someone, if I'm buying a gift for my boyfriend, or even if I'm lost. I used to get offended a lot, but I guess I've just gotten used to it. One time I went into GameStop and was just taking a look around. One of the guys that works there comes up to me and asks if I need any help. He continues to talk to me and says "Wow, its amazing. I had no idea that girls like you play video games." I just gave him a wtf look and continued listening to what he was saying about certain games. He kept commenting about how unusual it is for a girl to be in a store like that and how I must "feel so weird." After I told him that many girls play video games he tried to debate me and then had the nerve to ask for my number. Every time I go into a game store, I get all kinds of crazy looks and questions from the guys (I've never seen a girl working in a game store before) that work there.

Yeah, I know the feeling... it's more the other customers than the people that work there that give odd looks, though.

I does depend on the game you're buying to how much people stare. Get something like Pokemon or Mario and people care a lot less than, say, Shadow Hearts or Resi.

I don't suffer the "looking like a girly-girl" thing, though... most of the time I'm wearing a game-related shirt anyways.

And it depends on who I'm with. If I'm with a group of female friends we get more odd looks, but it's much better than being with a male friend and everyone giving you "you shouldn't let your boyfriend drag you around shopping like that " looks. Because nothing is more annoying.

And this, because it's relevant and true: http://www.deviantart.com/deviation/412 ... _scale%3A5

I usually let my older brother buy the games cause we don't have time
to buy every game the day they're released so we count the games then
buy them :minuki:
but I do get that look too I think that's because I look older than I my
age even my parents told me I should stop playing video games ( I always ignore them :nick: )

I feel that from the age of 12-14, I required enough knowledge to answer this question.. in a way.

Anyways, no, I didn't. I have a particularly weird Gamestop (which is why I never got the negative stereotypes/vibe from it). The manager is female, all of the workers are particularly friendly, knowledgeable on their gaming, and conversation-strikable. No weird looks from customers either.

If the environment had been different, perhaps. I'd really say the reactions you get depend entirely on the people there. >_>b

My mother (Who is 62) gets this look not at the gamestops around here, since we shop at the same two stores pretty much exclusively, but she does tend to get quite a few bizarre looks at where she works when people ask about game advice and she, not the 18 year old kid next to her, answers the question.

Let's see how many people tell me to get out of this thread with this new gender feature, roffle

I haven't been to many video game stores lately, and the latest stop was to pick up Pokemon which isn't surprising for a girl, but at a con I went to, one of the DMC cast expressed how he was pleasantly surprised by the female audience the games had.
"I always thought girls played those kind of games like that one game - you know, when you roll up things..." - (here he picked up his Cereberus plushie and made it tumble over his companion's water mugs)

When I went to go to pick up DMC over at the local Gamestop - it was a while ago, I was...I dunno, fourteen? Not as tall back then either.
I got one of the zwonkiest looks I have ever seen from the cashier. "Is this for your brother, or something?"
"Oh no way! He can get his own freaking copy!"
I walked out laughing. :garyuu:

I've never gotten any reaction to my being a female and buying video games, actually. In fact I was starting to think that stereotype was over with, but I guess according to you guys, it isn't. ^_^;;

Now, I have seen a female working at a Gamestop, but I haven't seen her around lately so I'm guessing that she didn't enjoy working there for whatever reason (kind of got that vibe from her, plus she was on her cell phone this one time and I kind of... heard her. XD).

But eh, around here, I see it as the employees just wanting to sell things rather than care about who is buying it.

As for people who don't work at video game stores, I've never really come into any situation where guys are surprised about me being a gamer. In fact I think that I'm more of a gamer than a lot of males at my school, or at least more broad in my selection.
Not to start a conflict, but almost every time I hear guys at school talking about video games, it's limited to Halo, World of Warcraft, Guitar Hero, and sometimes Super Smash Bros.

However... I do go to video game stores a lot with my brother, who doesn't look a thing like me (different hair color and everything), so they might just think he's my boyfriend or something and I'm just tagging along. *shrug*

@Croik: Hey now, don't be hating on us Counter-Strike players. I play CS, and I don't live in my parent's basement.

At a LAN Gaming Center I frequently go to, I actually see quite a few ladies go there. Heck, there are even a few that work there (I've played CS as well as other shooters with them as well. As for playing against them, I don't go easy. I treat them like everyone else. Either they shoot me or I shoot them.) From what I've noticed, they don't get too many weird looks, if any of all (either that, or I don't pay attention to the reaction of the males present).

My sister plays game too as well (though not as much as she used to, because she's busy as fuck.) Though she can beat me at SSBM, I can own her at every other game.

Edit: Almost forgot to post this:

I belonged to (haven't be active in awhile) a Counter-Strike Community known as the Lobby of Laughter. One thing about it is that there were quite a good percentage of female players (and a lot of the players on there were normal, everyday with jobs, CROIK!).

I don't get any weird looks when I go to buy video games. My local Game Stop has males and females working in it as well as the customers. I never get asked strange questions about what games I buy either. I usually just get asked, "Would you like to reserve a game?" It seems like the people in the store are more interested in helping me find the game I want rather than what gender I am.

Something interesting happened the other day, though. There's this new rental store that just opened nearby, and it's owned by an older couple, and wow did I feel waaay more at home there than at Gamestop or NeoGames.

At Gamestop, the guy just kinda looks at me expecting me to get something like Pokemon or whatever.

At NeoGames they look at me as if I shouldn't be there at all.

But this new store, iGnus, the woman just started chatting us up, asked for recommendation for new games, and congratulated us on being the first customers to rent a Wii game. She was really friendly.

I wish the other stores would be like that >.>

Hey, I only mentioned Counterstrike because I personally know a guy that does that XD;;;.

At least it's not just me :B. Sometimes I get the "Do you really know what you're doing here?" look from Best Buy guys, too. But then, I look so young I still get carded at R rated moves ;_;. Tiny women + electronics is apparently a curious combination to some people.

And as far as I know DMC has a huge female following, comparatively (at least, on LJ). But that's mostly because of Dante/Vergil, so I don't hang out in that fandom anymore >.>

PW fandom is a little more equal than most. At our last poll it was about 30% female, I think...?

Maybe it's time for another!!

Hmmm...I dunno. I don't think I've ever gotten a strange look when buying games at GameStop or any other videogame store out there. When I walk in I'm always stopped and asked "is there any game your looking for?" Actually at some of our local games stores we have women working.

Although one time when I went to GameStop and asked if they had Dirge of Cerberus, the guy at the counter took in a deep breath and said "yeess..." and gave a heavy sigh. I'm not sure if he sighed heavily because he was tired, or because I was probably " just another Final Fantasy fangirl." :nick:

In my math class, my teacher who's a huge gamer always comes up to me to tell me about the newest and greatest games that come out. He's the one that told me about Odin's Sphere.

I think male gamers assume that girl gamers only play games like Mario bros, DDR, Sonic or Final Fantasy/Kingdom Hearts O_o

Not me though :D *snuggles Soul Calibur*

I've never gotten any of those reactions. At the Gamestop or the used CD and game place by my house, I've never had a problem. Maybe because they have girls and guys working there and they're all playing games all the time.

Yeah, I get weird looks, but it's not because I'm a girl gamer! It's because I buy the oddball games! When you go in and you're all "Uh, can I trade in these games and put whatever credit I get down on LifeSigns? Oh, thirty bucks, well, put fifteen on LifeSigns and fifteen on the new Phoenix Wright, is that possible? It is, SWEET!" you tend to get some odd looks.

The people over at my EB know me, though, they know that when I walk in alone and go to one of the shelves in a dreamy state, that I'm just browsing, but if I come in and make a beeline for one of the shelves, I'll be right there as soon as I find the game/cheatbook I'm looking for. Otherwise, yeah, sure, you can help me find a game!

Hum, I don't really visit my local GameStop unless I've called in first and know exactly what I need (partly because there's some really creepy guys working there). The thing I've noticed is that, since all the employees are male, they flippin don't know how to talk with girls. I mean, I see them talking casually with other guys about video games, but if a girl walks in, the guy behind the counter will stiffen and go silent. D:>

Does this prove a stereotype? 8D;;;

I dont get to go to gameing shops or arcades very much, but when I do, I tend to get weird looks and comments too. More of them tend to be along the lines of "Arnt you a little young for this?" then anything outright sexist...though getting carded by a teenager at Blockbuster for Silent Hill when I'm 24 doses get a little annoying.

A couple of guys behind the counter have said it was pretty cool though to see a girls really do play games also.

To be honest, I'm little under the wing of the "there are no girls on the Internet" and "there are no girls who play video games" stereotypes. You can safely guess that I was surprised when I saw one of the girls in my German Video Project group playing a Nintendo DS *wait for it...* *GASP* POKEMON DIAMOND!@.

Christ! Now everyone here is going to think I'm sexist!

It's not that! It's just that most girls who I meet when we're around video games are kind of like..."OMG U PLAY POKEYMANZ DAT IZ SO KUL MY FAVERIT KARAKTER IZ VEGETA LOLZ LOLZ LOLZ". Maybe it's because I live in California...

So, that's why I have the impression that there aren't many girl gamers out there.

My other half usually doesn't get any funny looks, either for being a girl, or the fact she's buying typically non-girlie games (she does like stuff such as survival horror, most RPGs, and quirky DS games... like PW!) probably because many of the workers at the vast number of stores in her area (I'd say there was 15-20 shops within a 10 mile radius) know her. And a fair few of the managers at these stores are women themselves.

Even though it may seem like she could be dragged around by me, that illusion is suddenly shattered either when we start fighting over who is going to buy a particular game or when she lumps a large number of used titles on the counter to buy!

Must admit it's fun going to EB and Gamestop sometimes to see the reaction... and yeah if you hadn't guessed by now, she's American and I'm British so that makes for a load of cultural fun...
