(I'm surprised that a thread like this hasn't been made, and if there is one, I'm surprised it's not sticky'd.)

Hello, everyone! Though I am pretty new to these forums, I have yet to see a thread solely for musical programs and resources. I believe that every forum that has at least a small section on visual, audio, or interactive media should have a place where members can gather musical information (yes, I'm trying to sound smart...)

Well, right now I only have a few categories, and not that much in them. Feel free to add more categories/sites/programs to this list... I would really like to see this grow and hopefully help someone who needs these.

Spoiler: Music Applications
Audacity (Freeware, Cross-Platform)
This free program will allow you to edit and record any type of audio easily. It can export to Ogg, WAV, and MP3 (though it needs a plugin to export to MP3).

Garageband (Comes in Mac's iLife, Mac OS X)
Garageband allows any user to easily make music by either using their "apple loops" library, using the onscreen keyboard, using sheet music, or plugging in your own guitar!

Finale (Commercial, Windows & Mac OS X)
Finale is very expensive, but worth the money if you're into sheet music, because that's what you'll be doing. In this program, you can make sheet music and it'll turn into sound on it's own. You can select from a wide range of instruments to use. An unlimited free version is available, but you can't save.

Sibelius (Commercial, Windows & Mac OS X)
Sibelius makes writing sheet music easy. It includes many features such as writing sheet music, playing the music on the onscreen keyboard/fretboard, using a midi keyboard, or even using a mic to record your music. It is by far one of the best music software out there. A free trial is available.

Anvil Studio (Freeware, Windows)
Anvil Studio is a great program for those just starting out. It's interface will allow for easy MIDI creation.

SythFont (Freeware, Windows)
SynthFont is a software synthesizer for playing standard midi files using SoundFonts or other sound files in formats. SynthFont is intended to mimic the behavior of SoundFont compatible hardware/sound cards like SoundBlaster Live! or Audigy. It also provides an interface into the SoundFont structure and has basic midi and SoundFont editing capabilities. (Copied off the wiki)

FL Studio (Commercial, Windows)
FL Studio is said to be "one of the world's most popular and exciting music production systems." With this tool, you can compose, edit, arrange, and mix your music all in one program! Free trial available.

Edirol HQ-OR Orchestral (Commercial, Windows)
Edirol is a program with many musical instruments which will allow you to make a full orchestrated piece. The sounds are high quality, so you know it will sound good!

REAPER (Commercial, Windows & Mac OS X)
A multitrack midi recorder, editor, processing, mixing, mastering environment.

Spoiler: Music Download Sites
FreePlay Music (Original Site)
FreePlay Music is a free source for instrumental music. They have a wide range of genres that can be sub-categorized into feel, tempo, and instruments. You can even put up your own music for sale.

Incompetech
Plenty of songs, plenty of genres! You're guaranteed to find what you're looking for in this website.

MIDI Database
Free songs in MIDI format.

Spoiler: Sheet Music Sites
Gyakusheets
This site hosts sheet music of all the AA games (excluding AAI2). They are under the Creative Commons, so they are not for commercial use.

Spoiler: SFX Sites
Flash Kit
Flash Kit has a large variety of sound effects in it's library. They are each categorized into different sections. They are all member contributed so the list keeps growing!

Sound Jay
A large collection of free sound effects!

Pacdv
Free sounds and music.

SimplyTheBest Sounds
Sound Effects in different audio formats.

AS3SFXR
A sound effects generator.

Free Sound
Free sound effects.

Spoiler: Tutorials
None

If you have something to add to the list, please post here! I'll update this post with every new suggestion!

EDIT: I didn't think I'd be getting a lot of suggestions so quickly. Now I have a favor to ask of you guys. If you have a suggestion, please tell us what's the price, OS, and a small description of it. It'll help me a lot.

SynthFont is a good music program. It also lets you use sound fonts, and you can get some here.

I use FL Studio for all of my AA remixes, and I got the Edirol Orchestra VST for orchestrations. But I cannot link to them, since I did not acquire neither of them legally. They are commercial-ware, after all.

Still, if pirating them doesn't bother you, you can always look for them.

Also, I read Reason is pretty good. Also commercial-ware, though, if I recall correctly.

Not to be of a bother, but when you guys recommend something, can you give a little info about it?

It's kinda hard doing it myself...

All I'll need is the price, the OS, and a small description. I'll add this to the first post as well.

EDIT: Also, is Reason any good?

Actually, Finale seems to be compatible with Mac OS X as well.

You should add Reaper to the list of applications, it's a very good DAW (up there with Cubase, Logic and such) and it's really cheap. 60$ for a license (unless you use it for work), works on Windows and Mac and it does pretty much everything you could want from a DAW (doesn't come loaded with a bunch of synths and crap like FL, that's why the download is only ~5MB).

Also Freesound.org is a very good resource for sound effects.

I currently use MuseScore for my transposition/composition needs. It's a freeware, but works like Finale (I think). It's not professional (like if you want to have an entire bar of rest, sometimes it will split that up into rests representing the pulses in music, for example 4/4 time with a full bar of rest may sometimes appear as 4 quarter notes), and can be a little tricky at first, but once you get the hang of it, it's pretty straightforward and easy to use! I would recommend it!

There is also another freeware called Lilypond, which specializes in more professional-looking sheet music. I've never used it, because I've never needed it, but I think it's worth checking out!

This is a specific resource so not sure where to categorize it:

I would suggest checking out the website called Soundcloud. It's essentially Youtube for everything music/sound effects related, that artists of all kinds go to show their work.

You can use the site for a bit of inspiration regarding a certain style of sound/direction that artists come up with in their productions for the world to see. Some artists will allow downloading their works (just be sure to check the license that goes with said piece you're downloading just to be clear what the dl'ed piece should be used for).

Because it hosts sound effects of all kinds as well, you can use it as well...another alternative sfx source.

The other thing I want to mention about Soundcloud, is since it's dedicated for people showing their work, it would be a nice alternative to HOST all of your works here, so you don't have to waste space on a storage solution like Dropbox. Not sure if Soundcloud allows hotlinking though.

And that's pretty much it I believe.

Sorry to bump this, but for those looking for "professional" music/composition software, you'll definitely want to take a look at Logic and Reason. Logic is Mac OS only (since it is Apple software, afterall), while Reason is available on both Windows and Mac. I'd compare FL Studio to these in terms of professionalism, but not in terms of ease of use. All of these DAWs are better at doing certain things that the others are. If you are easily confused, start with FL Studio. If you have a Mac, take advantage of Logic. If you work with music hardware (mixers, recorders, compressors, etc) with patch cables and signal flow and whatnot, you may really like Reason and how it is laid out.

P.S. I use FL Studio primarily, but I am familiar with Logic and Reason. I still prefer FL Studio over the other two because of how user friendly it is and how much the layout makes sense.

I'd recommend REAPER if you're wanting to get into music for real - SynthFont just won't cut it. (Trust me, I've tried.) It also has a free trial that has little to no limits, so that's something good, too. I personally use Acoustica Mixcraft alongside it (mostly for its amazing default instrument library), but it's an optional choice, I guess.

As for instrumentation, VSTCafe, VST Warehouse and Hammersound would be good places to start.

As for sounds from Ace Attorney - I'm currently making a soundfont or two. I'll try to come back here and post after I'm done!

EDIT: Someone already made one, apparently. This would do until then.

Also, it'd be nice to have this topic pinned... Or is it already pinned?
