I just watched the movie and it was amazing. The puzzles were well thought out I thought, and since I haven't gotten the opportunity to check out specter's flute yet. This introduced me to Growley who I pretty much like more than Chemley.

Spoiler: the eternal diva ending
At the end when he went to say Vislar was under arrest I kinda imagined him saying "Mr. Vislar my chest hair says you're under arrest." and when Vislar asked to play one more song. Just the way Growley looked before turning around and walking away made me think of him saying "my pompador approves this."

Though that could just be me. I just think Growley's a pretty cool guy. He swims with sharks and isn't afraid of anything

Not sure which translations you've seen, but I know them as Inspector Chelmey, Inspector Grosky and Mr. Whistler.

Not that it matters much, but I find it curious that you've written them down so differently.

I might have just spelled Chemley wrong. I see it spelled either way sometimes.

As for the other two I was watching a subbed Japanese version so not sure what I can say abotu that. It was probably fansubs so maybe it was just another typo. When Grotsky was introduced they called him Growley and they referred to Whistler as Vislar throughout the whole film so it's what I'm used too at least.

Don Paolo is still in his "NYEH HEH HEH I'M EVIL!" phase that he isn't in by the end of the Unwound Future since by then he is turned good.

I thought Don Paolo said that was temporary though.

Spoiler: About Eternal Diva
A few things bothered me about it...some nitpicky some are reasonable though I hope it's simply a plot element I missed. For starters why bother with puzzle "00X" when you have less than 10 puzzles? Then there was the issue if he knew where Ambrosia was and had the funds to CONSTRUCT A GIANT ORCHESTRA-IN-A-CAN that can be moved about the place and at the same time can fuse with a castle (that would have to be heavily customised to cope with the organ) then why didn't he just fund a salvage expedition to a city he knows is just under the water (and not too far judging by the towers that appear above water) to see their technology and wonders. Finally and possibly the most annoying thing for me. If the original 'memory' transfer was actually a success (and arguably MORE of a success since the original host didn't lose her sense of self) then why oh why didn't she reveal herself after the experiment and prevent the whole hassle from ever happening?

Spoiler: Eternal Diva
Personally, I enjoyed them saying out "Puzzle Number Zero-Zero-One". It sounded a lot more ominous then Saying "Puzzle Number 1" which I'd view as a little more playful(?). Or at least that was my impression.

But if you're going to point out that plot hole, then you might as well ask yourself why he bothered to capture the audience only to release them via submarine. Somethings just make for better story telling, regardless of logic.

Spoiler: As before
I just assumed it was for Descole's personal sense of drama but Descole wasn't completely heartless. There's just a lot of impractical illogical decisions he makes that are purely drama XD

Spoiler: Oh, it's about eternal diva again?
But about illogical things... please tell me why did Descole organised the game about eternal life? He wanted a host for Melina but earlier he had no problem with kidnapping young girls like Nina. Why couldn't he just kidnap Amelia? She was chosen from the beginning.

It wouldn't be Descole if he did things without the dramatic flare. Sometime's it's not the trophy at the end that's the most important to someone, sometimes it's the path you got there.

For instance, if Kefka from FFVI was given the choice between ruling the world now, or ruling the world after causing untold damage, he'd choose the latter.

I love Descole's sense of drama and spectacle. He's the kind of villain who, if you destroy his current plans yet he's still safe, will stand up, clap, and honorably leave, to prepare for a future scheme. He enjoyed the show that you had to put up to wreck his plans, and respects your effort. He sees it as a game of chess, maybe: he put up a stong attack, yet you were able to break through it, therefore are worthy of applause.
Yet if you attack his core intentions, his beliefs, his ultimate, personal goals, he loses all hope, all sanity, and goes crazy with music-powered weaponized strongholds.

At least that's what I got from Eternal Diva, haven't played Last Specter, waiting for it.

As for Remi looking for the Island that was a myth, Layton teaches archeology. Think of all the missions to find Noah's Arc, Atlantis, and even the Lochness Monster. Looking for myths is practically in the job description.

His name was spelled Wisler in the OST I've got, I think I mixed up when I used that as a reference to spell the name, My apologies.

As for killing the remaining survivors... I'm a bit disinclined to think they're dead, despite the game being one of 'life and death'. Ignoring for an instant, that even when someone being dead in the games is an important plot element, and that they're alive and kicking by the credits. Whistler was among the group that failed Puzzle 003. And Layton told the people he tricked into failing Puzzle 004 that he'll come back for them. (Really, did he need to verify that there would be the same trap doors that littered the Crown Pitone?)

Really late response, but since no one actually answered, then here's my response to that. Remember Layton looking around the rooms, resulting in him finding out about the little Melina? Well, that was happening while Luke and the others went to the king's room and got trapped, so I would think Layton knew something like that was bound to happen were he to follow them, and in order to explore the castle a bit, he purposefully chose the wrong way, then went back the right way when the coast was clear.

In that case why didn't he do that from the very beginning? Anyway it makes me a bit angry. I prefer effective villain than a dramatic one. And I think... I don't really believe your version. If I wanted to make a mess and wanted to achieve some objective that is important to me... I believe that everyone would firstly do the important thing and then have fun... It still doesn't make sense...

Ah, but what if the fun thing, IS the important thing, or rather, one of several important things.

Anyways, I seem to recall that the point of the puzzles was that his daughter was a very intelligent girl. Therefore a compatible host had to have a similar level of critical thinking. Amelia may have had favor with the professor, but there's the off chance that she was less capable then others. So the whole contest, could be a dramatic plan B if you would...

Well. If it is then why not having fun from the beginning? Then I think I could understand it - combining business with pleasure. You see, the sudden change makes me wonder. But the second thing you mentioned... It makes more sense, I think. Considering it was the last chance (or at least that's what the Detagan's screen stated and the fact the machine couldn't hold Melina's memory much longer) such a plan B is quite a good idea... Yes, that's good explanation. Thank you :3

And if we're talking about it... Do you perhaps have an idea how did Janice/Melina manage to take the Detragan's key when Descole and wolves were standing just next to it? And how is that she wasn't noticed. It was opened space.

The Eternal Diva is due for a November 8th release date.

Also noted is that it will coincide with the release of The Last Specter, which is to release a few weeks earlier before The Eternal Diva. Which makes an October release more and more likely. :edgy:

I think your looking for effectiveness and efficiency from the wrong man.
If his ultimate goal was to examine the ancient civilisation beneath the sea he simply needed to use those subs he had (the ones the 'victims' of his puzzles were transported in) to lead an expedition there.....

Simple and not even villainous I'm sure the Archaeological society of london or whatever would probably commend him for his scientific finds (possibly even Layton).

A lot of events in the film purely serve to make drama, fully drama.
For example why didn't Melina (as Janice) simply say YEARS AND YEARS ago "Yo dad, the procedure worked" and thus prevent all the nastiness and kidnapping and essentially the whole movie from occurring.

A lot of it is just for fun :P

I think the reason Janice/Melina didn't reveal the success of the transfer was that if she did tell them that she was, in fact, Melina and not Janice, then she would still be under the care of Mr. Whistler, when she wanted to be totally free after her sickness and 'death'. At least, that was how Janice/Melina seemed to tell it when she finally revealed everything.

Then it was very selfish of her to keep that secret when Mr Whistler started doing...unscrupulous activities.

I hope that post is just casual commentary on the Professor's good manners and you're not actually questioning his gentlemanly demeanor.

Did anyone else think Janice was, like, 6 when they saw the movie posters? Either it's just the art style, or her opera costume isn't very flattering on her.

Descole's villainous breakdown- Win. "If this music does not open the gates of Ambrosia, I shall rip them open myself!" and after that, he just goes more insane. Say, anyone remember what happened to him at the end of the movie? Also, lol at the comic.

He fell off his Metal Gear and died.

Seriously.

He vanished, so he's clearly dead and we'll never see him again.

That's how it works.

Like another Detragon that I somehow managed to get my hands on? :karma:

Also, does anyone else wish that we had gotten to see Amelia's chess playing skill in the movie? I thought there would be a chess related puzzle just for that reason. Anyone notice Whistler had this creepy smile on when they were trying to put the helmet on her? It was kind of disturbing...
