We just had an earthquake here in Maryland. The news is still coming in, but from the sounds of it, it was a 5.1 centered not too far from here. Shook us up a bit, knocked a few things over, but nobody got hurt and we still have power and internet. But DAYUM! I'm still shaking. Anybody else feel it? If not, have you been through an earthquake? Image

First earthquake I've ever experienced. It wasn't as bad in NC, although I did start freaking out a bit. And somehow my sister is still sleeping.
I'm the only one alive in this house right now.

We don't get earthquakes where I live, apart from one. It was nothing more but a mild tremor, but the next day EVERYONE was talking about it, and how they called their loved ones to make sure they were all right.

It was barely a tremor. I was playing Elite Beat Agents at the time and it was an inconvenience at best! All the news had reported on it was some minor shifts in wooden supports on older buildings, but nothing had fallen apart.

The earthquake was a 5.9 in Virgina. Don't know what it was when it went through MD.

I thought something was going on next door like a fat guy just dropping from second floor to first.

Nothing look bad in my place and everything is still on the walls.

Never had an earthquake before. I sat through a hurricane, but that's about it.

Was the earthquake only felt in the East Coast? I'm from California and I didn't feel anything at all. Which is odd because you'd think California would get at least some tremors.

Well, it was a pretty small one here on the east coast, so it isn't likely the vibrations made it all the way across the country. If they did, I don't think you'd be able to feel it.

Man I was in the shower when it happened!!! Shit always happens when I'm the shower. The power goes off every time I'm in there! So then I think, I don't know, maybe my cousin is doing something. I don't know what considering he's like 22. He was with his friend and they were playing a game. So I thought maybe he turned the TV on so loud that the house shook. So then I'm like...W...T..F..EARTHQUAKKKKEEEE.

My grandmother starts yelling at me and my cousin to do something. She told my cousin to go outside and hold the house...I'm serious. She really went "GO OUTSIDE AND HOLD THE HOUSE!!!" And then she starts yelling at me while I'm in the shower like it's all my fault...

Mind you, we're Indian...so of course she's yelling at me in Malayalam...*sigh* Indians...

So that was my earthquake story!! :zennybw:

To be fair, people as far as Toronto did feel it.

As did people in New England, New York, Philadelphia, Ohio, Michigan and folks as far south as South Carolina and Georgia.

I was in the office when it happened. All the equipment on the shelf shook for a solid fifteen seconds, so at first I thought either an airplane was flying closely overhead, or construction workers were hard at work. But everyone else in the building felt it too... and then we all started getting phone calls from our friends and families, "OMG, did you guys feel that?! Was I dreaming?!" No damage in our area though, fortunately.

Haiti was a 9, and I didn't remember what Japan was. And wasn't the damage estimated to be near equal?

I don't remember what the magnitude was but the earthquake led to a tsunami which was responsible for the high death toll and nuclear reactor mess that they still need to clean up. I'd say Japan was more destructive since they are more modernized than Haiti is and the earthquake still really messed them up.

True, true. This wouldn't have happened if science had gotten off its ass and made floating cities There was no way to prevent either, and so we, as human beings, must strive to recover, and advance from every disaster we face! (Quite poetic for my normal self)

I applaud your poetic nature and it speaks the truth. This Earthquake/Tsunami/Nuclear fallout disaster will help them advance in technology in order to develop that floating city.

Just because you personally didn't feel it doesn't mean it didn't happen.

Although I noticed most of the people who were outside at the time were more likely to say they felt nothing than the people who were inside (and likely near a table or full shelf).

I heard from one of my American friends that her sister felt the earthquake and she was in school, so apparently once she'd been evacuated she started crying.

I used to go to Maryland every other summer. Now I know why we stopped. Are you sure it wasn't gas prices?.

The strangest thing about this earthquake though is that it should be impossible to have happened. Taken in some of the stuff I learned from my Environmental Science class, earthquakes are caused when two tectonic plates collide into each other, and not only is the edge of America's tectonic plate a ways away from the east coast, but America is moving towards Asia (which is why the west coast gets more earthquakes, and Japan.) The only tectonic plate moving towards America is the one Haiti/Dominican Republic is sitting on. Here's a map:

Image

Another thing! If you have Google Earth, open it up and look at the Atlantic Ocean. You can see the border between the North American and Eurasian plates!

I noticed this too. I actually managed to LEARN something in Earth Science. And here I am, noticing the impossibilities of earthquakes. Who'da thunk it.

What's impossible about intraplate earthquakes? VA has gone through it a few times. And China isn't exactly on a clearly defined tectonic plate, but they've had their share of devastating earthquakes as well. I'd call it a rare event, and not well understood, but not impossible.

When this earthquake happened, my friend who had moved to Virginia a few weeks before and was having her first day of college that day had a horrible time. Her school was pretty badly damaged and the following hurricane caused a lot of the classes to go online. She was stuck without power for half a week and she called us; we were like "oh jeez, I'm glad you're okay" but at the same time we were like "PHEW. At least nothing happened to us."

Hello there, widespread CA blackout. Mmm, this crow tastes good.
