Aside from what Croik had pointed out already, I don't think it's that hard to understand where she would have gotten that idea. A sheltered young girl who knows nothing about the outside world except from all those stories that were told to her - or stories from books. So anything that's beyond her understanding would somehow become "magical" to her. She could have been heavily influenced by various faery tales, all these idealistic stories about a man and a woman. So when Maya, the person she looks up to the most, starts talking about this "man", her mind would immediately put them together. If Phoenix isn't "special" to Maya, why else would she talk about him? So to Pearl, one plus one equals two, there can't be any other reason why Maya would ever talk about another guy if he's not "special" to her...
... It's good to be young...
