Japanese site 4Gamer ran their annual New Year's mega-article, in which they ask a lot of japanese developers what they considered their top game of 2011, and what they expect from this 2012. Andriasang, as the incredibly valuable resource it is, has translated the article and listed the main details of each developer's comments. Among those developers is Mr. Motohide Eshiro, director of Ace Attorney Investigations and its still unlocalized sequel. Eshiro-san considers Battlefield 3 as his 2011 GOTY, says he was impressed with smartphones and social gaming's growth this year, mentions Valhalla Studios' CEO as his person of the year, hopes to promote the Devil May Cry reboot, DmC... and of course, you're reading this because you want Ace Attorney goodness. And there is. Eshiro says there are "a number of plans" for us fans coming from him this 2012, starting with the GS 10th Anniversary Event, which is scheduled for the 29th, that is, 25 days from now.

In less relevant news, Ghost Trick producer Hironobu Takeshita mentions he's looking forward to Professor Layton VS Ace Attorney, which he thinks "looks like it will become a good product". And in other news, Level-5 CEO and Professor Layton creator Akihiro Hino mentions the five new franchise games that Level-5 has in store for us this year, and be it merely a faux-pas, he does not mention PLvsAA. He does mention Fantasy Life (3DS), Cinderellife Girl's RPG (3DS), Time Travelers (3DS/PSP/PSVita), Guild 01 (3DS) and Yokai Watch (platform/s TBA). These last two were announced an entire year after PLvsAA was at Level-5 World 2011, and the previous 5 were revealed alongside our dream crossover, during 2010's L-5 Vision event. He does not mention Layton or Eleven so it's much more likely that Level-5 is trying to push the new IPs. Layton and Eleven will sell find on their own without promotions. Time Travelers et al will need all the help they can get.

So, there's surprises coming for us AA fans to be announced at the 10th Anniversary Event, and unless Hino-san simply forgot about it, PLvsAA may not be released this year, or maybe he meant that Level-5 isn't going to publish it, and Capcom is instead. For the first news, we've had a date for a while now, January 29th, but for the latter, we'll see. For now, let us try not to panic and take this calmly.
Although if PLvsAA doesn't come out before the world ends, I will be more than slightly upset.

I really hope it's GS5. 
Honestly, if it was GK3 I would be a little disappointed. Not that I wouldn't want it, but I'd really want an actual Ace Attorney game before an Edgeworth game. It's been far too long since we've had one, in my opinion.

Just to make sure everything reads this right: Gyakuten Saiban 10th anniversary event is one of the plans they have for this year, so it does not necessarily that they will announce anything about the other projects at the event. Of course, it would be the right time, but still, the way it is phrased in the Japanese makes it seem some things are still not set in stone yet.

Would be quite ironic if they waited for the Court event to finally show off some Layton gameplay. I do find it curious that Phoenix has been wearing the pants in all the marketing thus far.

It would be a very good time to announce GS5 being in production, but on the otherhand they may be waiting for next TGS. Especially if they haven't got the main chars finalised yet, since we never get an announcement until most of the pre-production is done.

If I'm not mistaken, they're going to play one of the old TGS videos, decided by popular vote, so I don't think there's going to be a new one. Frankly I don't know what the hell is going on with the event - Takumi and some other staff are there to talk, Hino's got PLvsAA stuff apparently, there's a Japanese singer scheduled to give a rendition of the Steel Samurai song, it's at some convention center and it takes tickets to get in.

The lack of of GK2's localization really cut deep. I feel like the Ace Attorney series might be dead in the water over in the west.

I'll probably be disappointed, but I won't lie... And in terms of "PW: The Movie: The Game"... There's supposed to be an original case in the movie, right? A video game adaptation for mobile phones or as 3ds-ware of that case wouldn't be too far-fetched, I think.
Anyway, can't wait. I hope they announce SOMETHING new (and not just, say, hype up the movie and PWvPL)

3DSes are region locked if I remember correctly and I don't recall any official confirmation it's coming to the west just that it topped the polls of most wanted to be localised games.

You know, I just realized, we've never had con-current knowledge of GS games. So yeah, my hopes of having a non-Layton-Vs-Wright game being discussed just dropped off the face of the earth. Plus Level-5's Hino gave every indication that Takumi's focus is solely on Vs. I'm also not particularly sure we'll learn much more on Wright's gameplay in Vs for that matter. I mean, I picture Layton vs Wright being like Batman vs Superman. One character sees the big picture for what it truly is, and the other fights for the little people. We already have Wright's gameplay, and Ms. I'm-not-a-witch as his focus. I don't see more to be revealed. Layton on the other hand I foresee focusing on investigation, and Labyrinth City itself with the storyteller. So for anything juicy we'll likely have to wait for a Level-5 event.
UMvC is out. Nothing to hype there.
So gaming looks lame, then we've got the movie... a remake of the first game. Not sure there's much to learn about, other then the surprise case, and that might be best to reveal in theaters. Maybe.
Another concert/play? Maybe. Though, I think the hype train has been derailed for those items though.

The whole reason I haven't bought a 3DS yet is due to the fact that they haven't announced a European release for the crossover yet. Region locking = all of my hate.
