Croik is playing 999, not GPD.

Anyway, that's awesome! I hope Croik enjoys it as much as we all do!

I've played and own PL1, 2, and 4. I just missed 3.

Nope, she doesn't have either of those. (But that'll likely change by the time Layton vs Ace Attorney comes out. But hopefully the 3DS 2 will be out by then. Too bad about region locking)

What I meant was, she'll have the least amount of time to wait in terms of the turnaround from playing 999, and then waiting X amount of time for the sequel. Individually we've all waited 1~2 years. Croik can just play this, and then wait 9 months or whatever it takes to get it in English, or just weeks if she decides she can't wait and buys the system and game from Japan now.

Croik is playing 999, not GPD.

But then she can just buy GPD (and a Japanese 3DS, I guess) if she wants it, whereas I'm waiting until the summer.

Are you basing that on the average turnaround for Western release, or you playing it in Japanese as well? :)
If it was being released I think late 2012/13 would be the earliest to expect it.

3DS release has been confirmed - still no word on Vita or, for that matter, the English title.

Also, I'm hearing that the reward for beating GPD on hard is

Spoiler: Not really a plot spoiler, but still
A sequel hook of some sort.

Considering there's about 9x more 3DS sold in Japan, it's safe to assume the game sold pretty much the same on both consoles (maybe a bit better on PSV). Apparently, it's about the same as 999 first week in Japan.
Hope the game sells well in the US, and that we also get a European release too.

I would think a European release is unlikely since 999 didnt come over here, but you never know.
It would probably get a PEGI 16/BBFC 15 rating if it did (I'm only guessing what will match with an M rating based on what 999 was like).

I wonder what the game will be called in America? Could be just 999: Good People Die maybe, 9 Hours, 9 Persons, 9 Doors: Good People Die sounds too long. I hope there is an ending which is just as good/mind-fuck as 999 :D

We have the answer, and it is Zero Escape: Virtue's Last Reward. 999 is now to be retroactively referred to as Zero Escape: Nine Hours, Nine Persons Nine Doors as well.

Official PR wrote:
EPIDEMIC ALERT: Japanese Adventure Game Strain Identified in North America
Thousands expected to succumb by year’s end

Regional Office of the International Disease Organization, Washington D.C. – IDO agents working in California report that preliminary findings indicate the exceedingly dangerous Japanese adventure game known as “Zennin Shiboudesu” has somehow crossed the Pacific. Attempts were made to contain it, but some carriers seem to have escaped the quarantine and are now at large.

This game is extremely virulent and can be transmitted through physical contact (via the dual “Nintendo 3DS™” and “PlayStation®Vita” retail vectors) as well as through the air (via the “PSN” vector), which has prompted the IDO to declare this a level 6 pandemic. All uninfected persons are advised to remain indoors and avoid contact with others. If you suspect you have been infected, or suspect a friend or family member of being infected, report, or have them report, to the nearest IDO quarantine facility.

Similarity to an earlier strain known as “Nine Hours, Nine Persons, Nine Doors” has lead to a reclassification: Both strains will now be considered members of the “Zero Escape” game series. Exposure to North America also seems to have caused Zennin Shiboudesu to mutate, and after much deliberation it has been determined that it will be referred to in all future literature as “Virtue’s Last Reward” (see forthcoming department memo re: choice of strain name).

Virtue’s Last Reward—or, alternatively, “VLR”—has been known to exhibit the following symptoms. If you begin to display any of these, distance yourself from friends and loved ones immediately, and proceed at once to the nearest IDO center.

• Dual Language Support – Early cases show that VLR allows communication in both English and Japanese, with dialog playable in both languages. Whether or not this indicates damage to the languages centers of the brain is under investigation.

• Puzzles and Story – Preliminary investigations show that this game progresses rapidly through a repeating cycle of two distinct stages, which have been termed the “Novel” and “Escape” stages. During the Novel stage, subjects find themselves engaged by a complex and mysterious story. During the Escape stage, subjects have been observed solving numerous puzzles.

• Fully-Voiced Novel Sections – One of the indicators of the Novel stage is reportedly fully-voiced dialog: All characters except for the protagonist can be heard speaking during this stage.

• Numerous Endings – VLR has been shown to exhibit numerous paths of infection, most of which are lethal. At press time, 24 different “endings” have been observed, each unique.

• Immersive Three-Dimensional Environment – Many infected patients have reported a feeling of increased immersion in their surroundings, often manifested in the ability to rotate the camera around a 3D room rendered in-game and select and manipulate objects in three-dimensional space.

• Introduces New Characters, Brings Back Old Ones – Our files on 999 indicate that a number of the characters featured there appear again in VLR, although in what capacity is still unclear. This strain also introduces several new characters, all of whom merit additional investigation.

Huh. Interesting choice, presenting it like a spreading virus report... Maybe that has some story significance?
Since so many people complained about it, yes, this is an actual spoiler and not speculation!

Spoiler: Good people... Er, Virtue's Last Reward
I mean, Quark is infected with the Radical 6 virus...
And Zero Escape: Virtue's Last Reward... Definitely not a title I would've guessed. Do you think we should be expecting an english trailer soon?

I give them props for coming up with a North American name that doesn't sound idiotic. Also, I'm more than intrigued at the prospect of this now being considered a series--as in, it is possible more games could follow. Granted, my happiness at this idea would be dampened considerably if they just started churning them out, but let's be positive.

Annnnnnnnd there's already talk about a possible sequel after this:
http://andriasang.com/con04b/good_people_die_sequel/

Quote:
Chunsoft's visual novel/adventure game Zero Escape: Virtue's Last Reward (formerly translated as "Good People Die") may get a sequel. Scenario writer Koutaro Uchikoshi hinted at the possibility of a sequel at Twitter earlier today, saying that based off posts on blogs and at Twitter, the game has been well received, giving him the impression that they're getting closer to making a sequel a reality.

Virtue's Last Reward was released a couple of weeks back for both PlayStation Vita and 3DS. The game was developed by staff who worked on the 999 adventure game on DS and is considered a spiritual successor to that game.

If that comes to pass, I think it would be safe to say that "Zero Escape" is the new awesome visual novel series on the block (akin to the "Infinity" series, except with actual gameplay).

Yeah, I did so as well... Probably not a a really shocking or a late spoiler, but anyway I preferred to have not read about it.

The problem in this thread is, that there are TOO MANY spoiler tags which are used just for basic informations (e.g. taken from trailers or the official website) and stupid speculations. So 99 out of 100 times the spoiler tags aren't necessary at all. Please stop using spoiler tags on non-spoilery informations or clearly label a real spoiler as what it is!

Virtue's Last Reward eh? Interesting.... wonder why they havent gone with the 999 branding?
Obviously 999 fans will buy it, do the think the name will attract new fans?

English and Japanese voices? Cool! Now everyone's happy. Will there be an option to turn the voices off so you just read, a la 999?
Hope this isnt a spoiler - just thoughts:
Spoiler:
Thoughts: What could Zero Escape mean? Like 'Zero's Escape' (Zero must Escape) or 'Escape from Zero' (Everyone else has to)?

Will the 3DS version have rewards/trophies?
Its amazing to read each ending is "unique" so that could mean 24 full endings - wow! And not just "Person X Died - the end" or something :D
As for the name change, maybe Aksys thought Good People Die was too spoilery/blunt, I was used to Good People Die though :D

Well, I did blatantly say it was a spoiler for VLR. But, no, its something I read in one of his character announcement posts, so it should not be too much of spoiler. I'd just say if it says it is a spoiled for VLR, watch where you click .

Anyway, dual launguage support sounds cool, and I think they are definitely hinting at a 999 re-release.

Would I be missing out on something important if I didnt get the Vita version? The idea of rewards sounds cool.
