And this... There's no spoilers to the magnitude of X, the killer's, theme, but this IS the english names of the OST (aka the soundtrack). (Don't know if this was posted yet. As far as I see, it only spoils locations, sort of. And check out the first / last track names. "Virtue's Last Reward" as a title haters are going to rage / hate. (Love all of you.)

I couldnt resist and looked at the names!

According to this over at NeoGAF, having 24 endings doesnt mean you have to play through the game 24 times.

That's kind of a given, though, isn't it? 999 didn't require you do everything before the unlocking the true ending.
Spoiler:
Only the safe ending was needed to unlock the path to the true ending.

Nonetheless, I love playing it out according to the story, so naturally I'll be trying out every one before the final ending.

Huh. I always interpreted that statement as saying that you could just skip to certain parts of the game instead of having to restart, like you did in 999.

Indeed, you can jump to any point in the story you already visited to make different decisions to get different endings.

We already had this image a few pages ago.

Ah, that's the image I was looking for. Yes, I am curious on how the system lock scenario works... And just how unique these endings are. Look at what we see... Assuming there's ~3 escape rooms for each route, that doesn't look like it could branch out to 24 different unique branches...

EDIT: Hey, friends in Europe, have you already read Ghostlight's response to someone asking for VLR's localization? I think it definitely seems optimistic (I can post a link later if you guys haven't seen it yet)

I could ask one of the folks on GAF who's finished the game how the system works if you guys want, though I get the impression you can jump between decisions whenever, and in fact it's expected due to certain routes locking themselves off until you complete others (a la the coffin ending in 999.)

The description on the official (JP) site describes it kinda like the 428-flowchart: you can call up the flowchart any time and certain scenarios are locked/you can't advance beyond a certain point unless you continue with other scenarios/make certain choices.

I have to admit that I have only finished one ending of 999 as of now, because I was really, really annoyed there was no flow-chart system there. Having played Kamaitachi no Yoru and 428 before 999 (which all feature multiple endings), I was really surprised they got rid of such a great option in a newer game.... I'm now busy with Kamaitachi no Yoru 2, but the game would be unplayable if I had to start all over again for every 100+ ending/9+ scenarios!

I'm pretty sure Nintendo can easily remove it in a system update. I never understood it myself. Most people say it's because online would be screwy, but, like on PS3, you could have multiple accounts, everything would be fine.

Oh, how I wished they'd do that.
And region-locking got nothing to do with online.

If you want to restrict people to a certain region when they play online, you do so in the software, based on the user's location when he's connecting to the internet. For example, take L4D2 on Steam. Unless you actually befriend and get invited by a player in the US, if you're from Europe, you'll never end up in a US server if you try to join a game/lobby (unless you search for one in the serverbrowser). It's all based on their matchmaking system which takes into account your current location.
And personally, in MK7, a region-locked game... I just keep playing with Japanese/American/Canadian players, all the time. Rarely with European players :p

(Then again, maybe I didn't quite get what you mean by ''screwy online''.)

No, region-locking is just a way for them to have full control on their sofware: region-pricing, no import, etc... Because it's much harder (well, expensive actually) if you have to buy a foreign console, than simply importing the game.
That, or some shadowy reason only a couple people at Nintendo actually know, and that we'll never get to know about... :yuusaku:

But anyway, I don't think this is the right topic to discuss of such things :beef:

Well, hopefully the fact that it's become the n°1 game people want RSG to release in Europe will make them come out of their silence in the near future (even though, well, you can't just go and decide you want to localise a game like that, there's definitely a proper procedure to follow, and I'm afraid it's usually quite lengthy...).

As I understand it, region locking, at least for video games, is the industry's way of making sure each region is properly rewarded for their localization.

Take Ace Attorney for instance. It's created in Japan, then translated into English for the US, and then the English version is the basis for the European languages.

Say you're in the USA and you import from Japan. The profits from that purchase go to the Japanese developers. Not the English localization team. If you're in Europe and you import from the USA, none of your money goes to making sure future games have Spanish, Italian, French, etc translations.

And if you pirate, you're effectively against there being a games industry in the first place.

On the other hand, if a game has no intent of leaving a particular region, I believe that's free money they're locking themselves out of by region locking.

Yeah, but no. That would make perfect sense if the volume of imported games was anywhere near a significant amount... which it's not. At all.
Only the most hardcore fans and a very small percentage of people actually import games, for the following reasons:

1) import games can be expensive... especially Japanese ones, which are even more expensive than in Europe!
-Example with Mario Kart 7: 59.90$ for JP version on Play-Asia; 39.99$ in the US (RSP), and 44.99€ (~59$) in Europe (RSP). Took the RSP instead of cheaper prices from Amazon.
2) some people don't like buying stuff online... especially on foreign websites (pretty much most websites for video-games import).
3) long delivery times (at least a week, in general). It's especially true for games with close release dates between regions. Plus, you might risk getting your package lost/damaged along the way.
4) risk of having to pay Custom taxes (if you're unfortunate enough they decide to inspect your package).
5) Language... of course, it doesn't apply for UK citizens importing US games, but for people importing Japanese games, or non-english sppeaking players importing English games. Not everybody got enough knowlege in one language to actually got and import a game in that language.

And this is for region-free consoles (and not region-locked consoles where you need: either to buy a foreign version or mod it... further narrowing the range of potential importers).
The thing is, the impact of imported games on localised game sales in any region is totally unsignificant at best. I'm yet to see a publisher complaining their game hasn't sold well because everybody had already imported it.

But you're right when you say it's the (one of the) reason(s) region-lock exists... it's just totally from another era, and never was a valid reason in the past either (where it used to be even harder and expensive to get games). There's a reason the Xbox 360 is sort of region-free (it's up to the publisher), and Sony dropped region-locking with its PS Vita (after years spending fighting against importing websites, like Lik-Sang).

It's really become my n°1 complain about the 3DS, even more so than the pitiful battery. For more than 20 years, Nintendo never region-locked their handhelds games... why start now?

Quote:
On the other hand, if a game has no intent of leaving a particular region, I believe that's free money they're locking themselves out of by region locking.

This. Totally. Even if the amount of imported games is really unsignificant at best, it's not like they're actually losing money.

TV Tropes is where I got hit; the bottom portion of the page dedicated to VLR now has some serious spoilers. Granted, they're partially tagged, but I still got some things spoiled I didn't want (though I heavily suspected one of them and the other wasn't tremendously surprising.)

Sorry, Bolt_Storm, one of the things on the bottom of TVTropes that's spoiler tagged was added by me.

However, I kinda goofed. I was on GameFAQs where they have spoiler and non-spoiler threads... But sometimes things aren't tagged. I saw who Zero's identity was. Oh well. Although, I saw some pretty funny stuff. Like this:
Spoiler: Spoilered for length. Its in rot13... I laughed my ass off.

EDIT 2: Hey, guys, heads up: Since the warning posted above, something else has been added to TVTropes. It's sort of well spoilered, but even going on the page produced two, MASSIVE spoilers. One is Zero III 's identity, and the other is just flat out heartbreaking. The second spoiler is still there, so if you don't want to be spoiled at all, the 999 TVTropes pages is now totally off limits to you.

It... Well, here. THIS IS A MAJOR SPOILER, EVEN THOUGH IT IS NOT ENTIRELY FILLED OUT
Spoiler: General spoiler, but not specific enough to truly impact. Still a spoiler for Virtue's Last Reward, however.
The TvTropes page reveals that one of the original 9 in 999 is dead at the start of this game. It tells who on the page. You have been warned.

I doubt this is correct (this isnt a spoiler just thoughts BTW) but has anyone considered that "Have a nice trick!" may be an anagram? I don't think it is TBH, but someone on the Rising Star forums pointed out how it would follow the pattern of the other 2 English phrases being anagrams. IMO its just the rabbit gloating about tricking the player.

I can make the word "cricket" from the phrase but you need to use both c's - when something is described as "not cricket" - its means its not fair, or done in a shady, dodgy way or something....
Cricket in a...?

Yeah, I saw that too... I was really asking for it, though, considering I was reading a Gamefaqs thread literally titled "SPOIL ME." In any case, the game now has a chance to explain to me why exactly it was a good idea to just say, "Oh look, it's June AGAIN.
