If you lived in the Ace Attorney universe, would you be a prosecutor, or a defense attorney?

Although pretty much all of Phoenix's clients- and all of Apollo's- were innocent, I'm not looking at the question through that lens. Obviously, if defendants were always innocent, we'd all choose to be defense attorneys. So, think about the question in that way.

That said, I personally think I would like to be a prosecutor. However, I wouldn't be a "perfect record" kind of prosecutor. If I truly felt that the defendant was innocent, I'd pull an Edgeworth and assist the defense.

So, which would you pick? I'd love to read your responses! :edgy:

That's a bit of a toughie. My basically anti-government convictions would lend themselves to defense, but my approach to debate is probably more like a prosecutor's. I typically prefer to spend a lot of time and effort early on in order to build the "perfect" case, a tightly organized whole which the opposition will have trouble picking apart. While I relish the thrill of challenging prevalent assumptions and am capable of thinking on my feet to some extent, I'm more confident in my abilities as a researcher than as an improvisor. I'd probably be a little more concerned with a "perfect" record, to be honest, though not necessarily for reasons like Manfred's.

If I became convinced that I was prosecuting the wrong person, I might attempt to aid the defense, but I would be kicking myself the whole time for picking the wrong target if I did and the defense would likely have a hard time convincing me, since I have a very suspicious mind. I hate false righteousness, so if I saw any signs of that on the other side of the argument, I'd probably assume the worst and take special pleasure in crushing the opposition's "propaganda". On the other hand, I would see it as my sacred duty to keep the government on the right track, examining the case very, very carefully before picking my target. If my job allowed me to, I would reserve the right to doubt the findings of other government personnel and decide for myself who the culprit was. So, in a nutshell...if I were a prosecutor, I would be pretty stubborn in court but very cautious beforehand. As a defense attorney...I'm not really sure how I'd operate outside of court, so yeah...I'd probably be a prosecutor.

There are some major disadvantages either way.

Spoiler: spoilers, entire series
Defense attorneys get murdered in elevators and their kids blamed for it, murdered in their office for investigating people as a lawyer and their sibling blamed for it, framed for killing their boss, blackmailed for paintings, almost killed by mobsters, see their friends leave "suicide" notes as a result of their job, forced into burglarizing an office and threatened by the police chief for it, hit on the head with fire extinguishers in court lobbies, their assistants kidnapped, their clients lie to them, threatened by assassins, get poisoned by people they're investigating, tricked into helping professional thieves go free, almost killed by loan sharks, impersonated and their reputation trashed, whipped like crazy, their clients commit suicide, their courtroom adversaries swear vengeance upon their family, their boyfriend kill their mom, their boss turn out to be evil, their client trick them into relying on fake evidence, disbarred over lies, pressured into working free as a private investigator, busting their mother for dishonesty without knowing it, their clients dump them over poker, and their ex-clients frame them over poker. On the other hand, awful stuff happens to the prosecutors too.

Definitely a Prosecutor, I cant imagine what it would be like to defend a person(who everyone thinks is a criminal) who got accused of murder because of critical evidence.
I mean, do defense attorney really look for the truth? or victory?

hmmm...I wonder why Shu Takumi choose to make a game from a defense attorney perspective.

Prosecutor. I could get the first crack at proving the true culprit and make sure the State gets their accusation right.

Neither. Since I'd rather be a scientific investigator than to be the ones battling out in the courtroom. I like the thrill of searching out new facts outside of the courtroom rather than duke it all out before an audience. There's just nothing there that gives me interest. :notes:

Second choice would have to be being a Judge. :udgy:

Prosecutor, because as Phoenix says in 1-5 "Prosecutors make the big bucks".

Besides, having the power to reduce the salary of an incompetant dectective is pretty cool...

As AAI shows, prosecutors actually have more power to protect the innocent than defense attorneys do. Prosecutors can prevent the wrong people from being prosecuted in the first place. (This may not be true if the Chief Prosecutor forces them to take cases like a DA would in real life, however.)

In the PW world, I'd have to be a prosecutor. So much more power from that side of the bench. Most prosecutors in the series have misused that power of course, but they needn't have.

I'm not so sure what to pick. I love law and its rules, all the little gray areas carefully defined and then mixing together into a big gray mess that makes you work your brain. So much fun and aggrivation in one bowl. However, I can see myself as an attorney and prosecutor.

Can't quite call myself a perfectionist, but I always want to know the law's wording and make sure there is no loop hole in it (although there generally is) that anybody who might be guilty could use to get acquitted. As a prosecutor, I'd also have the feeling of accomplishment by getting somebody guilty their just conviction.

However, because I know those loop holes and how to use them, I could also work well at getting my client off. Just with the problem of clients, wether guilty or innocent, they will still lie or withold something. Thankfully, I could easily drop my client because they witheld vital information, and still get paid. (At least in the real life, german law)

I'm 22 now, I wonder if I could still choose to study law...?

Definitely not in the same trial! :gymshoe:

Dunno, I mean, both badges have numbers on them, so if you already are identified as one number as a prosecutor/attorney, it shouldn't be possible. Plus, you'd be kinda getting two paychecks, people would be confused if they should see you as a superhero who jails the bad guys or a jerk who defends people.

I want to be the next Judge! :redd:

.. Just kidding.

Actually I see myself as a witness. I can't stand the thought of myself being a defense attorney/prosecutor. I mean, my OC is a prosecutor but that doesn't mean that I want to be one as well.

Looks like prosecutors outnumber defense attorneys here by a landslide. Maybe it's because they have more benefits with their jobs compared to the latter.

Aren't there anyone else who wants to follow in :udgy: 's footsteps? Anyone? Guess I'm in the minority.

In AA? Definitely a Defense Attorney. Why? In AA, the Defense Attorney is the honorable one. They don't really pull tricks and find loopholes, they just have to work to get the defendant an acquittal.

In real life? 100% Prosecutor. Defense Attorneys are, in a way, scumbags. (Sorry!) I'd rather have some integrity and be a Prosecutor. Defense Attorneys in real life try to manipulate the law, and take advantage of it to keep psychos on the street. Definitely not what I want to be.

I'm more a prosecutor. Not a manipulative one, but the type of a prosecutor who actually cares for the truth (e.g. Miles Edgeworth). Also, I believe it fits more to my rather pessimistic view on the world. But that doesn't mean I wouldn't take the job as a defense attorney as well. Still, being a prosecutor fits a bit more.

I much prefer field work so being a detective would be much more interesting job for me. But between a DA or prosecutor, I prefer the latter.

When it comes to extreme criminal cases, I'd be prosecuting for sure.

At least where I live, defense attorneys don't think about anything except saving the ass of their clients. In the game, they are good guys, but in reality they don't really care if someone is guilty or innocent. Of course, for the sake of gameplay/history, the police of the game is stupid and incompetent.

Not to mention, in the game prosecutors are villains who condemn innocent people, but what I see in reality are defense attorneys clearing the name of useless people. Oh, I'm way too harsh to be a defense attorney. "Trust your client"!!! Pffffff.

I'd be a prosecutor, but a fair one like Edgeworth and Klavier. I'd only prosecute someone if I were sure that they were guilty, and I'd always look for a motive, unlike 75% of the cases in the series. I wouldn't manipulate the evidence, coach witnesses into concealing testimony, or anything like that. And if I feel the defense has a point, I'd help them, just like Edgy and Klavier.

Forensic investigator. It's the only job I'd trust myself with, and it's a career path I've considered (but have decided against... I still have a little time to change my mind, but that's unlikely) because I like the type of work they get to do~ :edgy:

Though, if I had to choose between prosecution and defense, I'd pick defense. I tried prosecuting in a mock trial my junior year in high school. It didn't work out very well; I was having an easier time picking apart evidence and testimony in favor of the defense (even though my line of thought was still firmly on the prosecution's side... :sadshoe: ). Besides, I like improvising better than planning. I can't follow templates at all when I write; I either go brain dead or kick the template to the curb until I'm done xD

Neither, I'd be a judge :hotti: I don't have the fierceness to be a prosecutor, and I don't have enough of a thick skin to defend the guilty that I'd inevitably have to deal with :sadshoe: I'd find it easier to simply be a judge and go with what seems right based on the arguments; there'd be less inner dilemma that way :udgy: That said, I'm not sure if people would take me too seriously in court without that sagacious beard; I don't want to grow one :payne:

Personally, I'd like to be a prosecutor. I mean, I'd rather prosecute Non-guilty people than defend guilty people. Not that the both aren't bad.
