Spoiler:
Yeah, I figured it was going to be the next game.

Now to figure out why they had to play the Nonary Game on a simulation of a flight to Mars...

I also have to wonder how they'll do the players/plot when we already know so much

I guess it depends on how fast Bad Player can read and understand Japanese. ;)
In addition voice acting usually means you take longer to skip to the next textbox.

Hmm, good point. Of course, 999 also didn't let you quickly read text that you hadn't read (an annoyance for me when replaying on a clean cart), so 999 itself also has time increases by text revealing speed.

I guess I also used a walkthrough after getting two bad endings because I didn't understand what I was missing, and didn't want to get them again. (Knife then Axe... ugh)

Looks like VLR is a bit friendlier in that regard with the branching timeline feature. Or so it seems without spoiling myself.

Nope, not that I know of. Nothing more precise than that damnly vague 'November' from the original press release.

Well lets hope it doesnt get postponed is all I can say.
I'm wondering if I should play 999 again before VLR... most likely I forgot some of the puzzles by now.
@BP, do you think overall VLR is better than 999 or about the same? I realise its hard to judge fairly if you dont understand all the Japanese (if you can I apologise).

There are a lot of things that are better than 999, but a few things that are worse. But it's an amazing game, and definitely better than 999 imo.

Also I don't think you need to replay 999 before playing VLR. The things from 999 that are important for VLR are important enough that I don't think you'll have forgotten them xP

The ESRB rating is also up.

As expected an M rating with "Blood, Drug Reference, Sexual Themes, Strong Language, Violence".

999 only had "Suggestive Themes" (Naughty Elevator Scene xD) - oo-er.... VLR must be really "out there".
It'll be interesting to see what PEGI rating it gets (we discussed it might even get an 18, wont that harm sales?)

Not really. Blood and violence were both in the trailer, I'm pretty sure Alice alone constitutes "sexual themes", I think the drug references are just mentioning scotch in 2 scenes, and strong language isn't really unexpected (plus it was in 999).

EDIT: Actually clicked the link, lol. herp derp

EDIT2: Yup, I'd recommend not reading that if you want to be completely spoiler-free ^^'
(Now I have to wonder if all those drug and sex references weren't in the Japanese version, or just went over my head...)

Didn't found any spoilers there. Nothing you didn't see in the trailers or wouldn't have guessed anyway.

Spoiler: response (ZOMG SPOILERS)
I don't feel like going through the entire rating summary again, but it mentions a woman stabbing herself--which can easily be inferred to be Alice, and it isn't obvious that it was suicide for a while (depending on the order of endings... it wasn't for me xP). It also mentions the mass suicide; while that image IS in the trailer, there's nothing in the trailer to make you believe that it was a suicide (rather than the work of a certain DEMON CHILD)

Actually, even that spoiler is in the trailer.

Spoiler:
In the third trailer you can see Alice about to commit suicide.

I didn't see that trailer until after I already saw that bit ingame.

And when I did see the trailer, I was liek "WHY THE HECK DID THEY PUT THAT IN THE TRAILER!?!?!?"

Also, I'm pretty sure in one of the two of the trailers I saw a screen of Phi shaking Luna (or something), but I don't ever remember that being in-game...

Doh! Yes I recall that too. I know what you mean, the rating description probably doesnt say much that we havent already guessed or seen from the trailers but still (even the press release wording may hint at something), I just didnt expect them to be so lengthy about what people actually say, etc.

Ah well. I'll probably have forgotten it come November or so. 999's trailers had lots of flash frames and word salads too but I was still surprised by that.

When you don't know the hows, whys, whos and wheres that short piece of information doesn't tell you anything. The death of a character isn't a surprise anyway, because we expect everyone to die at least once during the game. :sawit:

The 999 trailer also had many important informations when you rewatched it after playing the game, but you didn't understand anything when you watched it without further knowledge.

grim_tales wrote:

These parts are no spoilers no matter how you look at it. Just examples to illustrate the "sexual" content and the mentioning of drugs like “Just leave me and Luna out of your sick fantasies, you creep.” or “You must be really desperate to get high.”

I thhink we might finally have a european release date for Virtue's Last Reward. I just checked Amazon.co.uk, and they finally have the game up for pre-order. The price is 30.42£ for now, and should be released on the 16th of November.

I believe this date is the real deal, because it's obviously NOT a placeholder date (it's usually the 1st or the 31th of a month), and the 16th of November IS a Friday, so it makes perfect sense.

Well, it was already discussed in this thread before, but it's logical that they'd drop the 'Zero Escape' brand. The first game isn't coming to Europe, so that means no re-release of 999. They have absolutely no reason to keep the 'Zero Escape' part in the title, since Atlus put it there in the first place to link the first game and its sequel (since obviously, unless you're a fan who's been keeping up to date with the news, you wouldn't know the two games were part of the same series).

But yeah, it's cool to finally have a release date ;)

Something else I'd like to ask, I know the game has full voice acting, but the narrative/novel parts written like a book so you can just read them (like 999 was?) Not sure how I'd feel if a voice was narrating the novel parts as well.

Sigma isn't voiced, and Sigma is essentially the narrator, so there is no voiced narration.

Everything is voice-acted except for Sigma (both his dialogue and internal narration) and the escape-the-room sections.

Oh, and my thoughts on the English voice cast, having played the game:
Spoiler: MAJOR spoilers
So K's suit does indeed completely change the voice, as shown by Akane being able to wear it. So it doesn't reflect Sigma's voice, so I think both the English and Japanese voices are fine.

Tenmyouji's profile was put up on the English VLR site, and putting his English and Japanese clips together makes me hate the English one even more. And when you then take into account that he's Junpei... uuuuuuuuugh, what were they thinking?!

What I really loved about 999 and its true ending, is that it was more than just a couple of additional room.... to me, it almost felt like it was half of the game. It really expanded on the 'original' story in a very meaningful way, and took the time to really explain things in details.

It almost felt like a sequel of some sorts. It's quite massive, which is why I love it. But considering the number of endings, I presume there isn't really such an ending in VLR.

A little question though, is there the same system as in 999? I mean, is there a 'normal' ending you have to get before you can get the 'true' one?

Personally, I hope that by the time the game's released in Europe, there'll be 'walkthroughs' for all endings (if there isn't one already), like there was for 999. It was great, it allowed me to get all the endings I wanted in the order I wanted (bad > normal > true). You'd get a new puzzle piece at each ending, and then you'd have the true one to wrap everything up. It felt sooooo rewarding to have all the bad stuff that happens in the other endings bbeing avoided in the true ending. I hope you can do the same with VLR :D

What I did was simply to check the doors to take for each ending, and it worked wonders :edgy:

The true ending route is twice as long as most routes in the game. And there are even some other endings that are longer than most of the other endings as well.

It's not an ending, there are nearly a dozen scenario locks peppered throughout the flowchart. You need to get portrait endings (And sometimes even bad endings) to crack them. So you need to get at least about 11 ending 12-ish endings before you can see the true ending.

This game doesn't work like that. Every decision will send you to a completely different part of the flow chart. A guide is unnecessary because you'll have to go through every door at some point, unless you just want to know which endings don't have scenario locks yet and which endings crack certain scenario locks. In which case, once the game comes out I plan on making a little chart that highlights the right order to get the endings if you want to avoid scenario locks.

Apparently Amazon.com is already sold out of pre-orders for both the Vita and 3DS version. So if they don't get the pre-orders back up, those watches are probably going to be pretty pricey again.

This is kind of after the fact, but the watches turned out to be an Amazon exclusive. I use the past tense here because they're all already sold out. That said, one of the Aksys guys says there might be a way to get one down the line.

Ah cool, finally they indicate the pre-order bonus. Would explain why the VLR Amazon page was funky recently.

...the way they indicate that the pre-order bonus is sold out is really stupid though. It's very unclear.

But hey, good thing I pre-ordered all the way back in April soon after it was first available! Even if the bonus wasn't exclusive to Amazon, it would have been easy to cancel.

I barely got the watch myself. I had to use Amazon mobile during class (with my teacher and a few friends cheering me on) to nab one. So now I have two copies of the game.... Hmm...

Anyway, that's not why I'm writing this post. It appears that in all of this watch hype-rage, we missed something fairly important...

Could be a dubbed version of the anime (which I havent seen), should I watch that before playing the game?

NO

NEVER

...huh? If you know a bit about the game already (how it starts, rules of the ambidex game, and the basic character descriptions), it seems harmless to me. It obviously skips over a bunch of things in the beginning, like the entire escape the initial room sequence (and likely a lot of dialogue with the other characters), so it's not ruining the start of the game.

But since you've played the game already, I suppose you think it actually does spoil something important. Oh well, too late for me.
