PocketGamer's Peter Willington has asked Takeshi Tezuka, producer of the Trilogy HD iOS/Android ports, about the possibility of other Ace Attorney games getting a similar treatment to the (first) Phoenix trilogy. Most specifically, Wellington (from PocketGamer, not :wellington:) asked about potential ports of Apollo Justice: Ace Attorney, Ace Attorney Investigations: Miles Edgeworth and Gyakuten Puzzle Irekaeru Gyakuten, a developed-for-mobile puzzle game that came out in February of last year (only in Japan, of course), the title of which translates to "Turnabout Puzzle Substitution Turnabout"... Yeah.

In any case, this is what Tezuka said:

Takeshi Tezuka wrote:
If Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney Trilogy HD is received well by the reviewers and the sales are good, then, yes, we would definitely consider making iOS versions of those games.

We pretty much all know this, deep within ourselves. Capcom considers iOS (and Android, I'm sure he meant Android too) an extremely important market nowadays, because, well, it is. So it's getting the AA series over there, and if the first 3 games work out, chances are we'll see game 4 and the Edgey spin-off over there too. Who knows, that may be our closest chance of someday, eventually, getting an AAI2 localization. I rather have it on mobile than never having it at all, if you ask me.

If I had an iPhone I'd buy pretty much everything they throw at me at this point, if only to get them to release AJ on iPhone. Then I'd bug all my friends into spam buying it to show Capcom that people *do* care about that game... :yuusaku:

But I have no iPhone, so I am screwed. :larry:

And I'd buy everything in the hope that AAI2 gets a localisation!

I agree, this is our best chance of getting AAI2 in English. I know Capcom won't want to release it physically, so lets hope all goes well for the trilogy :will:

I'm tempted to buy them all if it legitimately gives us a chance of AJ and AII being ported as well as AII2.

I have an iPhone so I'm defiantly going to buy the AA123HD, even though I doubt I will ever play it because I have the original DS versions.

I'd consider buying a few copies if they were cheap enough, but you can't re buy something on iTunes.

I'd think it would be more likely to have AAI released before AJ mainly due to Capcom's huge focus on the "original" characters lately.

I actually think there's a big chance that just like PW123HD, they'd make the AAI ios game AAI1&2HD. A collection, just like the PW one, of both AAI and GK2. Then Capcom would translate GK2 during its american release.
I used to have Sam Waterston as my avatar but photobucket added a watermark and also Law & Order has been cancelled for 10 years so it's time for me to move on.

I'm definitely planning to buy AA123 on ios. I think it would be fun to play all gigantic and blown up on my old hand-me-down ipad. I've been wanting to replay the games ever since all the news about AA5 came out, but I've been waiting for the ios release. Anyway, I'm willing to follow any lead that might get us some version of AAI2. :edgy:

I'm suprised that there hasn't been any mention on release dates yet.

I also wonder how big these games are gonna be. Aren't they gonna be big enough to fill the phone's hard drive?

You may hate me if I say this, but personally, I don't know if I would buy GK2 again if it was localized. It definitely is one of the weakest entries into the franchise to me and just felt tired of itself in so many places. That's the whole reason I am worried about what GS5 is gonna be like, but I'm trying to stay optimistic. :yogi:

I'm quite nervous about this. What if the series doesn't sell well on mobiles. Sure we have Angry Birds and Temple Runners but those are free. The U.S market doesn't really eat this kinds of stuff up imo. So I guess we'll just have to wait and see. I'll buy it just to support the franchise.

IIRC they'll be making Cases 1 and 2 of PW:AA free, which is quite enough to give a feel of the series to those who have never played the game before.

I wouldn't if you already own or have played the games.

Well unless there's confirmation that AAI2 would definitely get localised. OS ports of games I can already play isn't enough to sell for me. Plus I've bought something purely to support a franchise before.

Good point, i'm still wondering if the U.S consumers will actually pay to get something like it though. It's still a pretty sketchy business model in the U.S, but I guess we'll see when the time comes.

Yeah I own most of the series, I really want AAI2 but I guess you are right in the sense that if you support anything then they will still give you sucky stuff.

Personally, I think requiring English-speaking Ace Attorney fans to buy an iThing on the off-chance that AAI2 will see the light of day here qualifies as "sucky stuff". I'm drumming up support by encouraging friends and colleagues to please pick up iNick when it comes out in November-ish, but I'm not going to run out and buy a $600 tablet (or $300 glorified MP3 player with bloated downloading software) to support a $20 game.

I wish they'd just put it on the damn eShop already and call it a day.

Oh oh. I hadn't read any reviews actually, but I could see how this is true. AAI1 is already by far the weakest of the Western releases IMO. And hearing that the AAI team would be handling GS5 has got me worried too.

PS - I'd still buy everything, iOS or otherwise. Come on, it's Ace Attoney.

Personally, I think the reason AAI was the weakest AA game was because of the lack of the courtroom. It relied so heavily on investigating and the personality of the characters to keep things interesting, that it started feeling dull after the novelty of the first case wore off.

But i still have hope for GS5. The story and writing wasn't that bad for AAI, it was the gameplay elements or lack thereof that ruined it.

Id still get AAI2 as a fan of the Ace Attorney universe

Well, Neni is pretty much alone with her opinion. Most people that played the Japanese version of AAI 2 think it's among the best AA games. But maybe you share her taste? Because I strongly disagree that AAI 1 is the weakest entry.

Not true. I am far from alone with my opinion. I know several others who agree. Also, did you know that part of the reason GK2 wasn't localized was that it sold far worse than most other games in the series?

For comparision, GS4 sold 250,000 copies in it's first week in Japan.

GK1 sold 172,000.

GK2 only sold 132,000.

Please check your facts before making me look like Unpopular Opinion Sally. :yogi:

I'm not so sure Neni's the only one with that opinion. I've seen two or three others here criticize AAI 2, though I don't recall if they complained about the exact same thing.

Honestly, I feel AAI 1 was a bit weak. It was great how they tried to tie everything together, but they did so with no respect to Edgeworth's character development up to that point. "OMG I'M TOO DUUUUUUUUUUUUUUMB TO TACKLE THIS ISSUE THAT'S ONLY A FRACTION AS BAD AS PRIOR ISSUES I HAD NO PROBLEMS WITH WHAT WOULD

DO IN THIS CASE??????????" I get the man is only human, and making him 'godlike' would just be the other extreme, but repeatedly flopping around like a fish is not Edgeworth's thing. Also that final goddamn case. Or part two of it to be exact. Jesus Christ why couldn't somebody shut that old man up. Stick a lit match between his tree toes at least so we don't have to be the only ones to suffer through the endless cycle of "I HAEV IMMUNITIES SUK IT yeah sure I'll humor you O SHIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII--" until one stupid random box of hot dogs made him go bye-bye.

Other than that, it was fun to play. And with the exception of that idiot Alba, I actually liked all of the new characters.

AAI bored me. I can barely remember much from the plot. That happened to me with no other Ace Attorney game. It just had not much memorable about it to me, except for a few funny lines, maybe.

The problem with GK2 is different, though. GK2 is a very memorable game, because it's very impactful plot... And just THAT might be the reason it disappointed me so devastatingly.

With AAI, the characters and cases being somewhat dull did not really bug me, because I wasn't expecting much. It was a spin-off and that's what it felt like: A passable spin-off. The characters ranged between "Highly interesting, but misused" (Kay) over "interesting but somewhat forced" (Lang) to "I probably won't remember this person even existed after putting the game down" (The likes of Rhoda Teneiro and Lauren Paups.) But I was content! It was a spinn off, I didn't expect more and it was a nice, fun extension to the AA universe.

NOW GK2, on the other hand had the problem that it made me care. Because the plot that is set up is actually COMPELLING. The conflicts adressed are actually SMART. The problems, the backstories, every is shaping up to be amazingly epic...

...And then we are served it with cardboard-cutout characters who can't hold the weight of their own dialouge, even when they try, very OoC moments for established characters, the most pointless and annoying rebuttals I have ever seen in any Ace Attorney game. (Hey, guys, did you hate Alba? Well, that's great, because now Mikagami gives you the same, wallbangingly frustrating experience! In SEVERAL CASES, with no other reason than to annoy you!! JOY!)

GK2, has some very, VERY valuable additions to the series, like Logic Chess (Finally a Gimmick that is fun and makes FULLY sense, thank you!!), Shigaraki Tateyuki and the entirety of Case 3 (Which might be one of my favorite cases in the series, even if I really dislike the entire rest of the game), but a lot of it felt just forced and tired. The problem of Edgeworth's previous character developement being ignored is still there, and, to add hurt to the injury, FRANZISKA even points it out!! The game is AWARE it is forcing a lot of the characters' actions to have the plot go the direction it wants. They could have fixed that, but instead they made the game self aware of it. The problem is self-awareness =/= Clever writing!

GK2 can be great fun. A lot about it is definitely enjoyable. But when you are searching for something as engaging as the first triology, you only find it if you close your eyes after every second piece of dialouge and image what it SHOULD have played out like, because the game, even more than AJ, just feels rushed. There's a few dramatic moments that work very well, but they are usually destroyed just moments later by some character acting in some way they really, really shouldn't act! It's just frustrating.

If you asked me where I'd rank GK2 among the AA games, I would seriously not be able to tell you, because there's just SO MUCH POTENTIAL in there, but they did so much wrong! This game makes me wish they'd remake it completly, with the same plot but a new script. Pretty much the exact opposite from GS4.

...Actually, that's the PERFECT way to decribe GK2: The exact opposite of GS4. In every single aspect you can imagine. Everything that was great about GS4 was bad in GK2. Everything that was horrible in GS4 was amazing in GK2. We have two extremes on hand here, people! :grossburg:

Thanks DeMat. I would've been super late with that were I to write it.

Anyways, if I had to guess, I'd say that Apollo Justice would get the HD treatment first, then the Ace Attorney Investigations games.

Why? Apollo Justice was basically Rise from the Ashes, plus a few mini games. the Ace Attorney Investigations games involved a new engine with different gameplay mechanics. Not to mention that AAI2 hasn't been localized yet. It'd be quicker and cheaper to get Apollo Justice: Ace Attorney out first.

Next, Neni's opinion of AAI2 is not as minority as you may think. Croik wanted to throw her DS at the wall while playing that game (and was a major part of why it took her months to bother finishing it). Especially when these two showed their faces: ImageImage The impression I got from Croik was that one was a complete moron, and the other encouraged and praised his moronic rambling. Then there's a <PLOT TWIST> where Edgeworth <PLOT TWISTS> because of the most moronic reasoning. Unsurprisingly Tweedle Dee and Tweedle Dumb were involved.

Personally, I hope that if AAI2 gets localized, that the localizers are given the liberty to re-write those parts. But this is all third hand knowledge.

Third hand knowledge that I can fully confirm. Every scene with Mikagami and Yumihiko made me just go "Whyyyyyyyyyy?!" :sadshoe:

As for AJ being more likely to be proted for iOS, I agree. It's closer in terms of gameplay to the first triology, naturally, so they'd not have to figure out how to work around interfaceproblems here first.

Is it so hard to port them to the 3DS eShop? I mean, if smartphone gaming and portable gaming are conflicting markets and AA5 is going to be on the 3DS, shouldn't the other games be there too?

They could probably port previous games very easily to DSiWare (probably don't need to change too much to get it to work)... if DSiWare didn't have a 16 MB size limit. All Ace Attorney DS games use ROMs that are at least 32 MB in size. I guess they could trim down the file size to some extent, but that may force them to remove some animations and things like that.

Porting to the 3DS format on eShop would probably require a similar amount of effort as porting to iOS, with some variations depending on how Nintendo handles eShop publishing. Plus they'd probably be forced to add some 3D effect to the game, even if a 3DS game can disable the 3D effect. Question is, is it worth the time and money to do that?

Probably not on the 3D thing, unless it was a full on remake I highly doubt any kinda straight port needs 3D compatibility.

Though lets calm down a bit guys this place isn't about hating on GK2 and I'd rather know as little as possible about it in case we get it someday and don't want my opinions to be coloured by any bashing/overt praise for it.

Are there any 3DS game that don't have a 3D effect? Not counting DSiWare and Virtual Console, of course.

I'm just saying, I don't know if it is possible to release a 3DS game without a 3D effect. That is, it is technically possible, but I'm not sure if Nintendo would let a 3DS game without a 3D effect get published.

Regarding GK2, I'd play it if it ever gets released despite what's been said... if I have the console it's released on. I don't have any iOS devices, and I have no plans to buy one any time soon. But if it was released on the eShop, I would definitely get it. There's no indication that they are considering eShop at all though, but I'm sure they've thought about it.

I really don't think there's any chance of it coming to the eshop. Capcom USA is not going to make a special product just for the U.S. fans.
So this means the only AAI2 we'll get is going to be through a medium released in Japan as well. Since they got the DS version, there's no reason for a 3DS/eshop version. The iOS release is probably has the best chance of being released in Japan, so that's also our best chance.

I am a little worried about the sales, though. I wonder how well PW123HD will sell.
I used to have Sam Waterston as my avatar but photobucket added a watermark and also Law & Order has been cancelled for 10 years so it's time for me to move on.

Well there are games that make minimal use of it. Plus if it did get released it would almost certainly be on DSiWare.

Slightly off topic: I imported AAI2 to show my support (and because it's probably the only way I'll get to play it before Hell has its next regularly scheduled freezing-over), but am stuck towards the middle of the 2nd case because of incorrect information contained in the ONE walkthrough that exists past case 1.

Unfortunately, my knowledge of Japanese is elementary at best, so I'm fumbling around like a dolt through a rebuttal, and nothing I seem to do works.

If someone could point me to a non-crappy walkthrough for case 2 and beyond, that'd be spiffy.

Back on topic: I want iNick to do well, but I'm a tightwad and won't buy an iThing to get another version of a game I already have. If it gets an Android release, I'll buy that, because we have an Android device in the house.

But its being on the eShop wouldn't be a US-only thing if they were to release entire collections like they're doing with iOS, not just AAI2. I mean, if the 3DS and smartphones are targeted at different audiences, what's the use of releasing older games in the series in a platform that's not the one that's getting the sequel? How do they plan to get newcomers into AA and buy AA5 like this?

With an iOs release of both games?

I don't think Capcom would miss that trick quite so easily...it'd come out later, but it'd happen.

My two cents:

The game can't be dumped on DSi Ware since the game won't fit without making damaging drops in file size. And the game cannot be put on the eShop because it wouldn't take advantage of the 3DS's screens. Either of them. I bet Nintendo has a policy in place against that sort of quick and dirty port.

Then there's the fact that I strongly suspect that Nintendo's holding until the 3DS's successor for DS games on the virtual console. Though my suspicion may be bunk with the transition into digital.

I suspect that unless they change the cartridge format (or make it purely download titles) or drastically change the hardware (like using a processor different than ARM), the successor to the 3DS could still run DS games without emulation. Then again, even if the cartridge was gone, they could still release DS games on a "Virtual Console" of sorts even if emulation wasn't necessary.

(I'm fairly certain that the 3DS uses hardware virtualization to run DS games, since it doesn't appear to have the DS processors on board. It does have a dual core ARM, while the DS had an ARM7 and an ARM9 on board, so each core on the 3DS could act like one of the DS processors. In comparison, emulation needs a lot more processing power.)

Pleeeeeease make 'em for Android some day Capcom. I don't actually HAVE an iOS...D:
While I've been told AAI2 has flaws, I still hope for an English release some day. Mostly because I really, really want to understand what the hell they're all saying, even if it's not that great.
And Apollo Justice HD/AAI/AAI2 HD sounds very nice indeed. That is, if I had an iOS. DDDDD':
