Well, this news is...weird.

Today it was announced that Lucasfilm had been acquired by Disney for around 4 billion dollars. Lucasfilm is now being headed by Kathleen Kennedy, a producer for both Lucas and Steven Spielberg.

Lucas will not be involved except for the story elements and it will be handled by a "new generation of filmmakers".

This has the possibility of being good and it also has the possibility of being very bad. If they have an idea that will further the franchise in a meaningful way, then it might be worth it. Based on the serial nature of what Disney has done with Marvel over the last couple of years, I'm not really optimistic. I don't want a new Star Wars movie coming out every year like they have been doing with the Avenger movies.

On the other hand, breathing new life into a project through new creative people is usually always good for a franchise (in similar situations to this) So I'm not entirely without hope. We'll see, I guess.

If they turn the Thrawn trilogy into film, I will be perfectly fine with this.

Which also means Disney got Monkey Island...

I'm hearing a 2015 for Star Wars 7.

According to BBC, they're planning "one new movie every two or three years".

They didn't own them already? I could have sworn that they did...

Oh well. They've been doing good with Marvel and The Muppets so I don't see this as a bad thing. Then again, I never actually saw any Star Wars movies except for Episode III... Everything I know about the series is from the three Family Guy specials.....

Well that was the schedule for both trilogies when they were being made (IV: 1977, V: 1980, VI: 1983, I: 1999, II: 2002, III: 2005) so that's not worrisome in itself.

It's how many they're making total that's the question...

The article made it sound like they were doing a new trilogy, and THEN new movies every few years. I'm a huge fan of Star Wars, but I personally think that's a horrible idea. At that point, you either have a new villain every movie, or the good guys win but the lead bad guys always escape, just to return next film and reak havoc Team Rocket-style. Neither of those sounds too appealing to me.

I'm all for a new trilogy though.

I just hope the new movies aren't all about anarchy and corruption. That's always been my least favorite parts of the Star Wars movies. It's easy to over throw and abuse a system. It's another thing to build.

Personally this seems more interesting to me. I'd totally like to see an animated Monkey Island film.

As for the new star wars I'm betting they'll be considered more or less their own little thing separate from the main trilogy.

Expect the super fans will hate this but hey I like Disney and I wouldn't mind more films even with stupid numbers stuck on the end of them.

Hell I won't even say that, I have nothing wrong with stuff getting high numbers at the end so long as the quality is fine.

You're right Ropfa, they're vaguely talking about creating more movies down the road. This worries me a bit, but time will tell what they do.

I think the corruption and political parts of Star Wars are done. The post-empire world will probably have a hopeful sense about it and it would feel like no progress has been made in the entire series to go back to that. Hopefully Lucasfilm/Disney knows that they need to bring something new to the table.

Today Lucasfilm said that it would be an original story, not based on anything from the "Expanded Universe" - books, games, etc. I personally think this is good, because while I really enjoy a lot of the Expanded Universe, it would require the new movies to be either 1) adaptations, which wouldn't be good for the sequel's quality, or 2) taking place in a universe already filled to the brim with stories taking place after this, making it so it would be really hard to just go from VI to VII if you only liked the movies. So I feel like they should ignore the EU if they need to.
