Fine spongier. There's definitely a comparable experience perhaps a simple cream donut is a good example.

It's not so much that they tasted good (and that they did)
And it's not so much that they were creamy and spongy and had a texture unlike any other pastry. (and indeed they had a softness to them that was only two pegs above cotton candy)
It's that they were a part of our culture.
Hostess has been around a LONG ass time, they made cameos in some of the most popular movies.
Imagine a world where children are watching Ghostbusters and hears them talking about twinkies.
The kids will turn to their decrepit grandfather and ask "What's a twinkie?"
The grandfather will start to cry, realizing that this generation and those that come after are lost.
He will then be reminded of a life he spent on a forum, how his childlike wonder was lost in that year of 2012, he will pull his catheter out and strangle himself in his despair.

Vanilla ones specifically they share a lot of similarities.
Additionally I had a Twinkie today.
Walked into one of the American Candy shops that live for like 5 months before closing in Glasgow today. Walked up to the counter. There was one twinkie left. I ate the last twinkie.

Back on topic, did Hostess make a red-velvet Twinkie before, or was that someone else that made a snack cake like a Twinkie? Because while I don't remember eating actual Twinkies before, I do remember eating a crapload of the red-velvet Twinkie-like snack cakes (or as I called them, "Blood Twinkies").
