There seems to be few topics about Mario games and I couldn't find one completely focused on the game, so I thought one was definitely needed. Unless I missed the topic, of course.

Basically, I have loved Mario games ever since I played Super Mario 64 when I was around 4 years old. The series means so much to me and I have so many happy childhood memories because of it. My favourite game Super Mario Sunshine, as I thought the characters stood out more than in other games. Also, it was just really fun to play. :)

What are your thoughts on the series?

When you have a side character better than the main character at his primary skill you know he's gonna be popular.

Yep. I can't wait for Luigi's Mansion 2. The first game was amazing - it was like nothing else I had played before. I'm hoping the new game doesn't lose that sense of creepiness it had.

I LOVE Mario Sunshine, despite it's flaws. :pearly:

Thank you Lucy for making this topic!

I also adore Mario Party 1 & 4, Mario Galaxy, Mario Baseball, and New Super Mario Bros. U.

(I wish baseball in real life could be as fun as when Mario and friends play it. :maggy: )

Wow, four years old with your first Mario game... I was... err... in elementary school when I encountered my first non-DK Mario game... SMB for Nintendo. (Phew, totally showing my age here. :beef: )

Spoiler: incoming tl;dr
Then the non-Japanese SMB2 came out and that became my favorite Mario game, probably mostly because I never owned it and was only able to play it in arcades or by video game rental.

Then SMB3 came out, and THAT became my favorite Mario game because I thought Tanooki Mario was just the coolest and I loved the 1v1 battle game as well-- my brother and I would play the hell out of it whenever we got stuck.

I think Dr. Mario also gets a mention since it came out around the same time. I liked it enough, though probably not half as much as my mother, who played it into the wee hours of the morning... mastering all 20 levels on each difficulty setting before long.

Game Boy also had a version of Dr. Mario, though I didn't play it nearly as much.

Super Mario Land for Game Boy... liked it enough to beat it a couple of times. Then I lost it and have no idea where it went.

Super Mario World... I remember actually anticipating this, since I got it see screenshots of it in a gaming magazine before it was released. And of course I played the hell out of it, found all the supposedly "secret" levels and beat it a bajillion times.

I was glad when Super Mario All-Stars came out since it gave me a chance to play the real SMB2 (aka the Lost Levels). Not too impressive, but I did manage to beat it once. I also liked the upgraded graphics on everything, even if it did screw with the nostalgia a little.

I briefly rented and beat a game called 'Where's Mario?' which starred Luigi. I have no idea why I had any interest in it, but looking back, I think it would be a nice addition to a collection of educational games (geography, in this case).

Super Mario RPG... quite possibly my favorite Mario game, in JRPG form. It was cheesy, it was cute, it was fun. The story was great, the new characters were great. I loved how there was a greater threat than Bowser, and Princess Toadstool/Peach had her first fighting role since our SMB2. The music was wonderful, and I enjoyed the minigames (except for that lame casino, which btw took me years and a web page to finally find... only to have it be some crappy mix of stuff you already do in the real game). I don't remember how high I scored in the beetle shooting game, but I was always playing it. Loved the FF fake boss cameo...loved kicking Smithy's ass... loved the ending... everything. Everything was just ridiculous fun.

I do remember when SM64 came out, and I probably had more fun with it than any other Mario game except for SMRPG. (I was pushing myself to get every star so that I could play with that stupid cannon outside of the castle.) I even bought the DS version of it and whip it out every now and then.

I kind of slowed down after that, though. Never did get into Yoshi's Story or any of the Paper Mario games... didn't even play Super Mario Sunshine. But by that point, I think I was more into JRPGs than anything.

I tried to get New SMB2 for 3DS, but honestly, I couldn't stick with it. I got as far as... I think world 6 plus the mushroom and flower worlds... but every time I tried to progress I just noticed everything was a disorganized mix of every element from previous old school Mario games.

I was thinking about the new 3DS game, but I might wait a while on it.

Oh yeah! I forgot about Paper Mario 2 which is one of my favorites. Super Paper Mario has a lovely story. I have the first Paper Mario but I'm too lazy to play it. :/

Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door is just too good to me, the end all be all of Paper Mario games. But maybe I should try to play Sticker Star.

The Paper Mario games are pretty damn good. Unfortunately I only beat Super Paper Mario (my brother deleted my Paper Mario save like 3/4s through didn't have the heart to keep going). Mario's actually got a great track record with RPGs with the Mario and Luigi series as well as the original Super Mario RPG.

Meh Mario is red, Luigi is green.
Red is my favorite color, unfortunately not green.

But anyway...

My first Mario game is...Super Mario Bros Deluxe on game boy color.
And yeah, I still like to play that since it's fun. Like....Mario games usually are.
Other I have are the bros 3 on GBA, and rest are all on DS and 3DS.
- Paper Mario SS
- Mario Kart DS
- Mario Kart 7
- M&L Partners in Time
- M&L Bowser inside Story
- New Super Mario Bros
- 64 DS
- 3D Land
I think that's all unless I'm forgetting one. ...which reminds me...Yoshi's Island DS counts?
And I'm not including the 3DS Luigi's Mansion since I don't have that YET, though I have preordered it over a year ago.

Mmm- but anyway; technically those are also the only Mario games I've played.
I mean; sure, I played the Sunshine in stores when it came out and kids could try those out and I've tried some other games too, but....
...I like to think that I need to own the game before I can play it...At least in some cases. And Mario is one of those lol.

I like the Mario best when it's platforming...yeeeeah...
Let's just say that the Partners in Time was my first Mario RPG experience and it felt bit odd. Still does in fact. ...And it didn't help they buffed the boss's HP's in some versions of the games...seriously those boss fights...Not hard but LONG and boring...
Maybe that's why I like platforming Mario the best, dunno...

Now I regret saying that rpgs have became stale and repetitive for me. I totally forgot about the Mario rpgs. I love Mario & Luigi: Superstar Sega as a kid, I just think it blows that there are no extras after you finish the game because I think that game is perfectly capable of having extras. :(

And I am currently reading a lovely Luigi/Daisy fanfic. (Mario OTP) Currently Luigi and Daisy are at Luigi's Mansion and it reminds me of how the game used to scare me as a kid ._. And it still brings a chill down my spine today. Still, I wish there were more mystery Mario games like Luigi's mansion.

(Fun fact: Reading fanfics out loud to my dogs actually calms them down, it's a miracle.)

Daisy's hotter anyway.

Though Bowser's Inside Story had some sidequests, I can't recall whether PiT did but eitherway least it's confirmed recently we're getting another Mario and Luigi RPG.

As a bonus it seems pretty Luigi-central too! Wonder if we'll see more of his awesome dark powers or the mysterious Mr L in this.

I should continue playing Bowser's inside story. ^^;

And now I'm exicited for the new Mario & Luigi RPG...but it would be nice if Daisy was in that game. :(
Besides Super Mario Land we only see her in sport and party games.

Yeah and she's really cool in those sports games! (*Has a thing for redheads and tomboys) I mained her on Super Mario Strikers Charged and it was all good fun.

Still would be nice if Luigi's romance got a treatment once in a while. Though hey with two big Luigi-related games coming up maybe we'll get something.

Speaking of Mario, why is Super Mario Sunshine so underrated in some circles? I didn't think much of the story as a whole, okay. But it was one of the first games for the Gamecube, and its purpose was more to show the graphic/gameplay capacity of the console than having a nice plot (also, since when do Mario games even need fucking plot), and in that aspect I think it performed nicely. Replaying Sunshine during summer vacations was the best decision I ever made. The graphics of this game can kick many overrated Wii/PS3 games in the butt.

Also, the music is so damn lovely; especially Gelato Beach and Delfino Plaza.

EDIT: Saw you guys talking about the Paper Mario series. THAT is pure gold. Super Paper Mario is often criticized for not following the previous games' style, but what would you expect from a Wii launch title with the mission of showing off the console's potential (much like Sunshine)? I don't think it's any better than the other two Paper Marios, but it is still a very good game. Then, Paper Mario, which was very cool because it was revolutionary and it used almost every character you've seen in Mario games in very creative ways. As for The Thousand-Year Door, I think it beats the original by a tiny difference: the graphics and features are better, and the story is a bit more interesting in my opinion.

Paper Mario beats Super Mario RPG and Mario & Luigi to a pulp. It's just THAT awesome.

I especially like the Super Mario Sunshine's 'Floating World' Music. It's just so damn catchy and head-bobbingly good would sing it while playing. Though I kinda missed being able to flat out punch and kick things like in 64.

Regarding SPM I don't think it was a launch title as far as I recall, think it came out a bit after but I really enjoyed it. Though I'm a bit biased because it actually gave me a chance to play as Luigi and made him pretty freaking intricate to the story. Though the RPG's give us so many contradictory opinions on the state of Luigi's heart, some folks say it's full of darkness and chaos, others like that wish-star-door-thing from Partners in Time say he has the purest heart of them all.

The punch-kick from SM64 definitely is missed, indeed.

I don't think Luigi's heart is all that dark, no. In the first Paper Mario games, he sometimes display a little envy over Mario's constant adventures (even though he's on an "adventure" of his own in TTYD), but nothing noticeable. And during SPM, yes, he turned evil, but that's only because he lost his memory and was found by Count Bleck. I think it's more Bleck's influence than his own nature that turned him; after all, as soon as he goes back to normal, he doesn't show any chaotic behaviour.

Yeah sure Count Bleh-bleh-bleh-bleh-bleh-Bleck did have the power to brainwash people, or at least one of his minions did it's how they got the whole marriage thing to go off but I wasn't really talking about that.

Spoiler: Super Paper Mario
I was more meaning how his heart is the perfect vessel for the Chaos Heart and he becomes a giant alien-gribbly-Dimentio thing at the endgame.

Oh, that. Well, it certainly points to something chaos-related then, but I still think it's not possible.

They really should start giving Luigi some consistency.

And romance! :pearl-blush: But I'm not biased, what I've learned for the past year (And from my painful experiences from watching Legend of Korra and Sword Art Online.) is that romance can either make or break a character.

That rule may apply to many games, but I don't know about Mario. I mean, we never actually see him openly being in a romance, all we see are some pecks on his nose, and yet he has his own unique character (even though he barely talks).

Nooo. I don't want to see romance in Mario games. I don't know...it would just ruin it for me. It is not the type of series that should include romance.

Well there's always sortof been romance in Mario it's just never been the focus. Saving a princess who rewards you with a kiss, later on it's revealed the Kidnapper has romantic intentions with said Princess, implied romance in pairing Mario and Luigi up with Peach and Daisy as caddies for Mario Golf. Princess Peach inviting Mario to the castle for 'Cake'. It's been there it's just secondary to good ol' fashioned fun gameplay and adventure.

Though yeah Luigi's powers be unusual in that sense.
In Smash Bro's Brawl we have his Final Smash dubbed...NEGATIVE ZOOONE.
An it's all about him using his weird negative powers to mess with other people's heads.

Though also Snake's Codec call for Luigi has Colonel Campbell bashing Luigi before going sort of insane while Snake sticks up for him.

Is Luigi really a Lovecraftian abomination?

Yeah, I was kind of displeased when Luigi was all weird in Brawl and wasn't so serious...even though Brawl wasn't mean to be taken seriously.

I guess the creators of the game were inspired from that whole Weegee thing.

Really? I felt Luigi had a whole lot of character in Brawl.

He was stuck in his trophy form for a majority of adventure mode.

Ice climbers got like 1 scene climbing a mountain.

Luigi came out of his trophy and was ultimately part of the small team responsible for reviving all the warriors to fight Tabuu. Hell depending on how you did it it could just be him, Dedede, Ness and....the kidnapped princess and Sonic who showed up at the very end to fight Tabuu if you didn't collect all the trophies (I can't remember exactly who was all there in Dedede's collection).

Besides I said he got a lot of character, not a lot of screentime. Consider how hyped Sonic was going into that game, the end product was one tiny scene at the end where he shatters Tabuu's wings from out of the blue with no explanation or context.

Ahhhh Mario! You can never go wrong with this series. It's a classic gaming franchise at its finest. Heck, one of my first video games that I ever played was Super Mario 64.

I also have Super Mario World and the All-Stars Collection on SNES, all three Paper Mario's, Luigi's Mansion, Mario Sunshine, Mario Advance 1 & 3 (I lost 2 a long time ago, what's worse was that I was about to beat Bowser's Castle :sadshoe: ), Mario Galaxy, the Kart games from Mario Kart 64 up to Mario Kart Wii, all the even numbered Mario Party games, New Super Mario Bros. DS and Wii, and so on. Yeah you get the picture, I love Mario! :keiko:

I also like how 2013 is being treated as a "Year of Luigi" by Nintendo. I think he deserves a little more time in the spotlight!

Year of Luigi?! O_O This is a surprise, but at least he gets the spotlight this year.

Speaking of minor characters, I'm one of the few people who actually liked Princess Rosalina. I also adore Tippi from Super Paper Mario and Vivian from The Thousand Year Door.

Wait, you're saying people didn't like Rosalina? Huh...wonder why?

Also how about that Daisy? (That's a nice avi of her and Maya btw!) Will she get an appearance in an actual Mario game outside of sports/party/racing games etc? Same goes for Waluigi. How come he hasn't been in a Wario game yet? He is his brother after all.

I didn't like Rosalina or Tippi and I honestly have no opinions about Daisy.

My favourite "Mario girl" is Goombella.

I don't know but I remember when the first Super Mario Galaxy game came out people said that nobody cared about her. And some people hate her just because some male artists like to make perverted pictures of her. Seriously, I'm tired of people saying they hate a certain thing just because of the fans/fanbase.

I'm not saying I dislike Peach, but Princess Rosalina was much more fleshed out than Peach.

Daisy I want in an actual Mario game...Waluigi, not at all. But Waluigi was in the Dance Dance Revolution Mario game.

Edit: And thank you Gnobo :3

I kind of regret not using Goombella much in Paper Mario 2, there was just other sidekicks that were more powerful than her.

Yeah well they make perverted pictures if every character don't see why that should make them hate Rosalina. Though in the interest of equality I'll point out that I think female artists draw porn too.
I quite liked Rosalina as a character she was touching, feminine and at the same time competent and wise unlike Peach who is just a damsel in distress.

Though why they decided she should have ice powers I do not know...but they attributed her track in Mario Kart 7 as an Ice place.

Technically Daisy has been the main princess in Super Mario Land already on the GB. Totally snubbed Mario's rescue by hooking up with Luigi afterwards but hey it had great music.
