Not really Ace Attorney related, but I thought I'd mention it since it has to do with Professor Layton. After several hints from Level 5 International, Layton Brothers Mystery Room was released today in English on the US and European App Stores.

The game stars Hershel Layton's son Alfendi Layton, genius inspector of Scotland Yard. Alongside his rookie assistant Lucy Baker, the duo solves the toughest crimes using a simulator that perfectly re-creates the crime scene. The app itself is free, while the rest of the game's cases can be unlocked for less than five bucks. Download it here!

https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/id640517092?mt=8

From my own first impressions, I have to say that this game is really compelling! The characters and mysteries are all great, plus the live jazz soundtrack is phenomenal. It's very reminiscent of detective film noir, with a dash of the Layton's series' signature charm.

I was wondering if this was going to get mentioned here. I played it earlier and got about 30 minutes in to the game, but I can't get any farther than that because it keeps freezing and closing out of the app. :grey: But what I have played has been pretty good.

I'd buy it in a heartbeat if it were on Android/3DS/Vita, but I guess not. I suppose I'll have to borrow my dad's Ipad again, like I did with AA123HD and the IOS port of Ghost Trick.

I have to ask, since I haven't seen anything about it in press releases or previews, but why is the game called Layton Brothers Mystery Room if it only seems to star Alfendi Layton? Spoil me if you have to, I'm just curious since I can't pick up the game.

If you squint a bit you could mistake Baker for Layton's little brother.

This is an AMAZING port job. Smooth constant 60 FPS, very easy going UI and navigation controls, VERY pretty looking game, Audio quality in great condition, etc. gameplay wise it's a well done job.

The only criticism I have is the wonky translation...It's not that good, or it's intentionally bad...There were some very obvious words that don't actually work right in some sentences (using "were" instead of "was" for example).

Capcom should take note. The AA HD Collection is a joke of an app compared to Level 5's game here.

Wow, I didn't expect to see my thread featured on the front page of Court Records! I'm glad that I mentioned it, so now more people can get it!

So far I've solved three cases, and I really like it so far. I've noticed that the story seems to be much more "mature" compared to the regular Professor Layton series. Mystery Room contains a lot more violence, blood, suggestive themes, and language; even more so than Ace Attorney. Smooth framerate, iPhone 5/iPod Touch 5G screen support, top notch production values; it's all great. Capcom, why couldn't you treat AA123 HD this way?! :zenitora:

To Huddini, the translation is supposed to be that way. You're probably referring to Lucy Baker's speech. That's just her accent, so the "wonky translation" is intentional. I found to be great all around with the rest of the characters.

Downloaded it and I gotta say, it's very charming. The first two cases are pretty linear and simple but the third case starts to shake things up a bit. The graphics are beautiful and it manages to keep a sense of humor in the dialouge pretty well.

Just downloaded it; looks pretty cool!

Anyone know if there is any story/important connection/reason for it being a Layton spin-off, or is it just an on-the-surface, brand-name connection?
I used to have Sam Waterston as my avatar but photobucket added a watermark and also Law & Order has been cancelled for 10 years so it's time for me to move on.

I've just began playing Case File 001 (According to the game's files, they've added a max of 178 cases that could potentially be added).
When they said that Alfendi was "Unstable", mixed with his design, he reminds me of Sherlock from the BBC TV show (Called Sherlock)

EDIT: Oh, how I love the puns used for the characters names! I'm having a good giggle when I read them!

File 1 suggests why. After file 2, I have my little theory.

Wait, wait, wait, what?!!!! That's so cool if that's true! Are they really going to add 178 files? Will we get them for free if we've paid for the case packs? How did you find this out?

I'm sure Ash could fill in the details better than I can, but the game was developed for the DS, but never completed. Mid development cycle it was moved to iOS, and rebranded as a Layton spinoff. The connections are skin deep, I'm lead to believe.

As for Android, I don't believe it was ever released for Android in Japan, so don't hold your breath.

I was able to borrow my brother's ipod touch 3G and played the first free cases so far I love it. I just really wish it will come out in 3DS or Android since I'm just borrowing the device. If not, I suppose it's time to buy one soon.

Looking at the promotional material when the game was revealed, there are of course scrapped concepts such as a man getting shot and other character designs. Would have been interesting to see what they were planning with.

I'm also wondering if they ever plan to release more files.

So far, this game definitely feels more like an Ace Attorney: Investigations game then a Layton game. There are no puzzles like in the Layton games; only observing the crime scenes, collecting/presenting evidence, dissecting testimonies, and making logical deductions.

You're welcome! I was the one who originally posted this announcement, and I'm glad that more people are learning a out this game and downloading it. I've finished case 5 and I think it's an excellent visual novel/adventure game so far.

To all those who enjoyed this game, make sure to check out 999: Nine Hours Nine Persons Nine Doors when it comes out for iOS in English this fall. I'll probably do another announcement for that one too.

But if you have a DS, I highly suggest getting the original version of 999. The iOS version doesn't have puzzle rooms, although it has the ability to jump around the story. Also, a certain really neat part of the story will need to be removed for iOS, unless they got around that somehow.

I'm sure the iOS version will be good anyway, but it seems to me that other than the ability to bypass replaying parts of the story and the HD graphics, the DS version is superior.

According to 999's director Kotaro Uchikoshi, the puzzles were perceived by many users as too simplistic and easy. I honestly thought they were fine, though apparently Virtue's Last Reward did them much better.

It'll kinda be a shame that the game will lose its only actual "gameplay," but the story is exceptionally good. I'm not really too bothered because I'm used to playing visual novels with little interactivity like Steins;Gate. I just hope that the people who do download 999 will excuse its lack of gameplay even if the story is amazing.

I just hope that we'll see VLR on iOS, because I don't have a 3DS or Vita yet. :sadshoe:

I'd argue the puzzles were 'simplistic and easy' only because we had to beat them a million times each to get all the endings. They lost their novelty.

That's true. VLR apparently fixed all of that, allowing you to skip right to the important choices with a handy flowchart feature.

I seem to be the only one on Court Records without a 3DS, though ironically fewer people have iOS devices than I expected. IDK. :meekins:

I'm running iOS 7 beta 2 on my iPhone so it looks like I'm not going to be getting far in trying this game. Layton Brothers doesn't like running on an unstable/unreleased OS. (Which totally makes sense of course.) I somehow managed to get through the first 'actual' case before the system wouldn't let me progress any further.

First (only?) Impressions:

I like it. It feels very strange pointing the finger at someone before you get all the facts. I get a particular level of apprehension I don't get in Ace Attorney when that occurs. 3D Investigation could've been a nightmare, but the scrolling system, while it doesn't leave much room for surprises, takes a lot of the heartache I generally feel about exploring in 3D on a touch device. The name puns are wonderful, and the case 'felt' at least more difficult then a first AA case, despite the fact that you couldn't get penalized it seemed.

Not bad. Not bad at all. I'm looking forward to actually being able to play the rest of it.
