WAAHHHH IT CAME TRUE!! :D :acro:

With the release of the new trailer, the Psyche Locks are back, Apollo's perceive ability is back, and the new Matrix. YAY!! It all can fit into one game! :acro:

I'm still waiting on Gin to mess them up somehow.

In fact, I think I even saw one other ability during that trailer... around the same place as where we saw the Psyche Locks? It had something to do with talking to people normally, like the Psyche Locks (how are you supposed to pronounce that, anyway?).

Are you talking about the hotel dusk-style "I should try and remember" mini-game shown in the trailer or something else?
I used to have Sam Waterston as my avatar but photobucket added a watermark and also Law & Order has been cancelled for 10 years so it's time for me to move on.

Don't know, I haven't re-watched the trailer yet to find out what it was... :yogi:

Speaking of new game mechanics, I've been thinking over one that been reintroduced: the Psyche-locks. These locks appear before a person when that person tells a lie or is covering up a truth in some way. But there's one big loophole that can be exploited.

Luke Atmey, for example, was able to cover up the whole truth of his business in the basement warehouse with a well-spun lie. Phoenix managed to break through the initial cover-up, but he didn't pursue the subject further and left it at that. Thus, he ended up clearing Ron Delite's name as Mask☆DeMasque.

Even with Larry during GS3-5; after breaking through his Psyche-locks once, Edgeworth almost gave up pursuit. Fortunately, thanks to Larry's slip of the tongue earlier, he and Gumshoe were able to catch on. Edgeworth reworded his question, and only then did more Psyche-locks appear.

It follows that the Magatama doesn't pinpoint what secret(s) it detects, and that makes it fallible. In most cases, breaking through one set of locks is enough to make a person confess, but there are those who can avoid telling everything one way or another. They have to be brought to court for the whole truth to be exposed.

However, dragging suspicious person after suspicious person onto the stand can be a long process. If we could catch the culprit(s) during earlier stages of investigation, it would definitely help move things along. I suggest an upgrade to the Magatama; one that allows the user to see those hidden truths. Those truths shouldn't be the embarrassing stories that someone simply didn't want to talk about. They should be more informative clues, such as what said person was planning at a certain place, but he/she didn't go through with that intention. (Since they didn't go through with their plans, it seems like they weren't even there, or so they suggest.)

This alone could cut the investigation phases by half or more if implemented appropriately. If Apollo can Perceive out of court and Athena can pick up even the slightest sounds (and translate them into words if they're from a person's heart), then Phoenix can get a better weapon too. It also explains why Pearl shows up from nowhere in a case. (But I hope she's not only there for plot device.)

On the other hand, I want to see that Phoenix isn't nearly as gullible as he used to be. Even without an upgrade to the Magatama, he should still be able to pick out when someone is covering up something just by intuition or something. He's been an incredibly skilled poker player for 7-8 years now. If the GS5 team wants to show maturation in Phoenix's personality, they could take this way.

Thoughts, anyone?

I agree wholeheartedly.

I also wouldn't mind if you somehow could miss an opportunity and would later suffer for it in court somehow. Mix things up a bit, add some variation and replayability.

No. No No No. The Magatama is not a lie detector, people.
It reacts when somebody has a secret in their heart, not when they are simply lying. Taking the Matt example above, he said "I did not kill anyone, and that includes Juan Corrida" which is technically a truth. He never killed anyone, so having killed someone is not a secret for him - hence no Psyche Locks. When he does have a secret in his heart that he wants to remain secret, his true personality, then the Psyche Locks appear.

I never said it was a lie detector. The reason Phoenix never seems to use it in court is because it's not sensitive enough to lies. That's why he has to rely on his own efforts to draw out information, and they're usually much more effective. Of course, since that's how it's been all this time, I don't see him actually getting a spiritual power-up or something.

...Suddenly, I imagined Pearl doing an infomercial on the new-and-improved Magatama.

:pearl: With nine easy payments of $59.99, you can get the full lie-detection package you've always wanted with no extra repercussions!
:ack: That's way too expensive!
:pearl: But of course, Mr. Nick, you can get it all free... as soon as you sign these prenuptial agreement papers, officially recognizing Mystic Maya as your fiancee.
:nick-sweat: What.

Nonetheless, regardless of what system the judiciary follows, a faster and more thorough investigation would help, so the trials themselves won't take as long. Hopefully, the Jurist system can be implemented by GS6 time. I smell a conspiracy as the cause for the delay.

Sorry, not really meant towards you. I just keep seeing people talking like they expect the Magatam to work like a lie detector. When it really is anything but that.

beterbomen wrote:

Wrong, I actually edited that page last night because there was a flaw in that.

Matt said he 'didn't kill anyone'.
Even if he had said 'I had no hand in killing Juan' the magatama would still not have reacted. Not because he was lying because he did have a hand in killing Juan by hiring an assassin, it was because Matt didn't consider it a secret that he wanted to keep hidden.

The person doesn't have to lie for the magatama to react. They just have to be reacting to something that involves the secret they want to keep hidden. In 2-2, Ini gets the locks when asked about a possible acquaintance with Dr Grey - since she didn't want the acquaintanceship to be known, she tried to conceal the secret and that's what made the psyche locks appear. Not the "I don't know a Dr Grey" statement.

I have an idea of what Case 5 could possible be about (I apologize if this has already been stated, but I didn't read through the whole topic)

Spoiler:
It would have something to do with Blackquill's crime, and events will occur which make it complicated whether he killed the person in the end or not. Then Maya will come in and channel the victim and prove he's innocent. That's my guess. Both reintroduces Maya, gives her something new to do, and makes Blackquill an anti-hero/Edgeworth 2.0.

If they were to bring in Maya at that point and in that way, Maya fans will complain...
"Why is she only there for so little?!"
"Why didn't you introduce her earlier?!"
"WE DEMAND MORE MAYAAAAA!!"
And similar.

As for the rest of the theory, of course it'll be that.
We can't have a prosecutor who doesn't have a tragic story behind themselves.
