Level 5 is in charge of all localization. Capcom has no control over if the game gets localized or not. You can't blame Capcom in this scenario.
I'm sure other users here can tell you about the "shortcomings" of Capcom.

Despite their shortcomings, I think Capcom will regain their former glory one day.

Nobody can afford to skip the digital copy of AA5 at this point...dislike DD all you like, but realistically, it really IS the only way to show Capcom the series has a future here - skip it and you seriously risk completely neutering the series in the west.

It's quite a large problem, essentially, but that's what we face.

THIS. And the sad thing is that most of the boy-cotter's reasons have nothing to do with DD itself but the digital release.

I understand people's concerns in this case. For the 3DS I too would prefer a physical version. But the future of gaming is digital. It's easier to get the products to the consumers, it's easier to roll out updates and patches, it's more environmentally friendly, it's more convenient for the consumer, etc. Digital is not going away, and there are many services which do it right. And I see people talking about Nintendo's policy, but it isn't as bad as it sounds.

Nintendo keeps a record of everything your device downloads, automatically, without you needing to sign up for Club Nintendo (although that probably helps even more). If your 3DS breaks and you can't perform a system transfer they have a record on their computers that you downloaded DD. (I can't guarantee that they'll give it to you since that has never happened to me, but I would imagine they would help you out since they KNOW you bought it).
Not to mention that Nintendo will likely have a steam-style account system in the next few years. They will have to in order to keep up and they are already making steps towards a system like that right now.

DD itself does benefit from this too. The price will probably be lessened to DS pricing, and Capcom doesn't have to spend money on cartridges. While I support the physical copy I do worry it's not in the best interest of the franchise.

To anyone considering skipping DD only because of the digital issue:
If you want to protest the digital download system that's fine, but I would really rather you did it on a game that doesn't have the fate of a franchise hostage. Do it with Half-Life 3 or something. Skipping on purchasing DD will not magically make Capcom release a physical copy of DD and AAI2 and just say "we screwed up". What will likely happen is Capcom will say "GS5 didn't sell well, there's no point in bringing AAI2 or GS6,7,etc. over". Franchise dead. Goodbye! If GS5 sells really well here, then I would imagine AAI2 on the eShop in 2014 as a way to tide over fans until the west release of the eventual GS6. These are two radically different outcomes, and I want you to seriously think about whether you want to risk the former happening just because you don't want to buy one game digitally.
(For the record, if you just hate everything to do with GS5 or just hate AA I'm not saying you have to buy it. I'm talking to the people who are always like "This was a day one buy, but since it's digital I'm not going to bother".)

This is the little bit of good news we've had in regards to localization, and it could have a very good effect if it comes to the US (which it probably will) but it might be less of an effect than we previously thought since DD is a digital only release.

I know this is a bit early to ask but if Dual Destinies completely flops and Capcom ends the series outside of Japan, what becomes of this great site?
News on future GS games in Japan?

I don't mean to make anyone worried, but this is a serious question that could possibly be a reality.

I'm not worried too much about the game, we just need to stay cautiously optimistic.

Yes, Dual Destinies has a chance of not selling all that great.
But that shouldn't bring us down, we need to get ready and make it a hit!

My guess would be that the site would continue to cover GS/GK news no matter what country it was coming from. There are many users from many different countries on this site, and there are many users who either speak Japanese fluently or are in the process of learning Japanese, so I'm sure those fans will appreciate news about GS. Personally, I'd like to know about future games even if I won't be able to play them in English. So I think the site will stick around.

And don't get me wrong; I am always looking at the worst situation for this because I want to be wary and prepared in case it happens but I don't think that DD is going to be a failure. This is my line of thought:

Most likely scenario: DD sells a good amount and it is profitable for Capcom; More profitable than AAI but not necessarily more profitable than GS2, GS3, or GS4. I don't necessarily believe it will sell more, but I think the benefits of Digital Only will help increase the profits. We will still be left hanging about the future of the series until GS6 is announced. Capcom will probably not do what they did this time and instead wait and determine whether to release GS6 later on in the development cycle. There is a 50-50 chance it will come over. GK2 on the other hand will never be released in the US.

Less likely scenario: DD doesn't do well. GK2 doesn't get brought over, and after GS6 is announced Capcom will confirm it is not coming over to the US, effectively killing the franchise in the west.

Least likely scenario: DD sells amazingly well, as good if not better than GS4. GK2 is released on the eShop to help keep the audience interested until GS6 is announced. Capcom confirms that GS6 will be coming to the US.

So my prediction right now is that DD will just sell well enough to make a profit and maybe get GS6 over here. I've pretty much given up hope for an official GK2 localization, which to be honest I'm ok with; the fan translation is still going on, I have a copy of the Japanese version, and the GK games are not as interesting to me. If GS6 doesn't come over, on the other hand, I will be very upset.

We can't really do anything else than wait and see what happens at this point.

It is unfortunate, but I do agree with some posters that if you want to see AA games localized in the future, you'll need to support the digital version of the game. Capcom is clearly struggling to bring AA games to North America, but if digital sales can bring in the profit that physical copies couldn't then we'll likely see more of the AA franchise.

While I don't want to jump to conclusions about things, I'm going to have to add to the genuine plea of, "Please buy the Digital version of Dual Destinies!" It's understandable if you can't because of Internet or whatever, but if you can, please do! I know that digital-only isn't ideal and I would much prefer to have a physical copy as well. However, the future of AA and the chances of games like AAI2 getting a release will increase if the sales go up. Yes, Capcom is going to want money like every other business. Which is exactly why we need to buy the digital version.

Boycotting is only going to make them shrug and go, "Oh, maybe they don't care about the games after all? Japan-only in the future, then!"

We need to convince them that they're wrong, everyone. Do not boycott. It will be counter-productive.

Agree with everything said here. For some batshit crazy reason, the fans that are against Dual Destinies being download only seem to think they have Capcom in the palm of their hand and boycotting the game will make them come to their senses. I can't even fathom it, I just can't.

If they care about this series and its future, buy the damn game. No buy = no more Ace Attorney. Simple as that.

Not buying the game due to internet issues would be a pretty lame excuse I reckon. Most people have access to wifi in their homes and if they don't then simply just go to a friends or family members house and download it there. There's also places with wifi access such as libraries and internet cafés. Skipping out on downloading DD from the e-shop would be absolutely pointless, the fans would simply be digging their own graves for the ace attorney series.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think sales projections would go down slightly. Digital game=Small drop from losing people who will buy a physical copy. (there was a stat that came out saying 70% of 3DSs are connected to the Internet... or something like that)
They are saving money by releasing it digitally. It's possible Capcom is saving money, if they don't have a drop off in sales.

That was my line of logic, but you also need to think if they lower the price of a normal 3DS game, $39.99 to something cheaper, that would raise sales
If Capcom uses that logic, they would raise sales projections.

I'm pretty sure that the 3DS eShop doesn't have any pre-order functionality. They may be able to gather some numbers from releasing a demo, but that probably doesn't say much because some people probably just download every demo (I do, at least). And I'm pretty sure they wouldn't publish those numbers anyway.

Certain games on Steam can be pre-ordered (don't know if you can cancel it like, say, an Amazon pre-order), but as I said, I don't think the 3DS e-Shop has that.

He has a twitter account: https://twitter.com/chrissvensson
The chances of him actually seeing the drawing through twitter are small though.

The 3DS most certainly does not have a pre order function, I dont see why not though as it would give them a rough idea of how many people are going to buy the game. I can't see much data from the demos being used, The demos are only really to give a taster of the game to newcomers. I don't think capcom really care about existing fans playing the demo, it's the new ones.

Doesn't the 3ds have the option to automatically download free stuff for you?

No...

Demos are free, but not automatically downloaded. There is a feature to queue multiple downloads so you don't have to wait for one thing to download, but that's it.

Settings>Internet>Spotpass has something about downloading free software, but I haven't seen anything automatically download, especially demos. Maybe that setting was pre-eShop (I got my 3DS about a year after launch) or is just unused. And it doesn't affect automatically downloaded system updates either.

If you activate Spotpass, it does download data automatically, however, it is generally just notifications, streetpass puzzle pieces, the occasional application (Only 2 or 3 this has happened for in Europe, Eurosport, Nintendo Letter Box and.. i forget) but no, not demos.
I imagine people would get annoyed if demos kept auto downloading onto their SD cards and wasting space, it's just easier to go to the eshop yourself.
