Without spoiling anything specific, would you say Blackquill is competent? How does he operate, and how does he handle losses?

Speaking of which his tricks, we heard a bunch about his 'manipulations' before the game, does that come into play a lot and is it (at least somewhat) believable? Once again, nothing spoilerific please.

He is pretty competent. In fact, he reminds me quite a lot of Edgeworth from the first game... only, we get to spend a bit more time with him in a couple more cases, so Blackquill comes off as just a bit more as the "shut up and get on with it" type. (No worries, Mr. Blackquill, there's this function in the game called "fast-forward"...)

The manipulation tricks are plentiful. He starts with one right off during his first appearance in the 2nd case, and manages to convince the judge to do his opening statements for him up to the 3rd case. He even occasionally brings up tales of his fellow prisoners when making his points, as if to both intimidate and teach a moral lesson at the same time. They are pretty believable, at times complete with visual and sound effects to enhance the mood.

Although from my view, he isn't all that intimidating, but staring head-on at him who's readying his "blade" is understandably a bit nerve-racking. He's someone who easily breaks through metal cuffs. Not many people in real life can manage to do that. (Then again, not many people manage to drink 17 cups of coffee during a single trial.)

The first time he underestimated a rookie, he paid for it and took it hard. The second time he underestimated a rookie, he took it a bit more cautiously - though in Athena's case, there's just a bit of the hidden big-brother type in him. As for the DLC case, he couldn't take Phoenix seriously. The guy wanted to defend a WHALE... and somehow managed to succeed defending both the whale and its trainer. By the 4th and 5th cases, he does take him seriously. (Must have been thanks to the whale-on-trial thing.)

All-in-all, he's a pretty chill guy and an easy new favorite on people's minds. The snarkiness from a prosecutor isn't anything new, but being able to shut people up with whatever he does is pretty unique.

From what you've told me it sounds like I would really enjoy his character, and that the team has thought him through. I'm also glad little Polly will get to face someone a little bit tougher and meanier in court like Phoenix did in his rookie days.

Although I'll admit, the whole big-brother type right when Athena shows up strikes me as very foreboding...

I was also hoping that the game explains this. I know Blackquill prosecuting even though he's convicted symbolises the dark age of law thing, but I was hoping there was some explicit reason behind why he's allowed to do it in the first place.

I mean in contrast Franziska becoming a Prosecutor at age 13 is just as dumb but I still want to know if this makes sense. I guess it doesn't have to :O

There's an explanation at the end of the case.
Spoiler: 5-5
Edgeworth was responsible for calling Blackquill out to court. He initially suspected that there was some hidden side to his trial seven years ago, but didn't have the evidence to support his suspicions then. He set Fulbright as Blackquill's personal watch and warden, but just the year before, the Phantom killed off the real detective and took his place. (The Phantom was still aiming for the little bits of potential evidence - old blood stains - that could uncover his identity.) From early on, Blackquill did suspect something was a bit off about him, but couldn't figure it out until this case.

Naturally, it was Edgeworth who found out what happened to the real Fulbright.

It isn't.

I'm gonna re-ask a question again :P

How is the writing/dialogue in the game? How does it compare to the first GK game? I really wanna know, because while a localisation team can change a lot of jokes and lines to be more westernized they can't just start writing characters or the story like they want with total freedom, and I fear the dialogue in this game is on the same level as AAI which had some incredibly bland or unfunny lines.

And second, does Edgeworth speak like he does in AAI, or are his lines more like they used to be in the other main Ace Attorney games? I ask because Edgeworth's characterisation was a bit off in AAI. He was too regal from what he used to be. He used to have witty and sharp lines of dialogue and sometimes they were borderline regal, but they exaggerated this in AAI.

What I've seen of the Japanese script is nothing short of spectacular. I did mentioned in a previous post that the humor is top-notch. While there are still plenty of spots that need to be changed for localization, as usual, coming up with fitting lines isn't all that difficult. A lot of these jokes can be translated as is, without needing to throw in some of their own (but I don't mind if they do; just that they should moderate it). And while Case 2 features lots of prominently Japanese culture, the protagonists enter as if they're foreigners - namely, Apollo's indifference to the Yokai craze. The other cases are much more relatable to a western audience, so there shouldn't be a problem.

Whether or not it's intentional, I've always found the GS games to be more frequented with humor, mainly because of the amount of comical bashing the protagonists take. It's on a whole other level from the amount Edgeworth takes in his games, which isn't all that much, given who we're dealing with. Most of the humor in the GK games "revolve" around him, rather than "involve" him. That is, he doesn't embarrass himself unless the player forces him into a situation. Phoenix and Apollo are usually forced in regardless.

It's not just about the protagonists, though. The new cast is especially colorful, and in my opinion, rivals with the other GS games in terms of variety. If I went on about them, I'd have to write a multi-page essay.

As for Edgeworth, I find him a bit more relatable to his persona in JFA and T&T. In the end, what works best for his character is not as a protagonist. He is someone who works things behind the scenes, and when he reappears, he gets results while the protagonists struggle to figure things out. When playing as him, his pace of activity is reduced to a slow crawl to match the speed of gameplay, and with it, everyone else. It's not about "dumbing him down" so players can better understand (it's never a good idea to underestimate the fanbase and the dev team knows it); it's about the relaxed pace the games run on.

But, thankfully, I didn't find the pacing in GS5 too slow. They move right into the next steps without much, if any, delay, and it's mainly because of the complexity of the cases that make it more challenging to complete.

On an unrelated note, I have a question that doesn't exactly pertain to the game itself, but a character poll featured on Nico. How's the list, and was there a recount later? I'm not sure where to search for it on Nico, and several giddy artists on Pixiv have captured my curiosity.

Doro no Ji (The Mud Word) (Apollo) and Tsuki no Ji (The Moon Word) (Athena). He basically takes one character from their names for the phrase 'the X word'. 'X no ji' (the X word) was used in a faraway past to refer to people indirectly (c.f. the L-word), but it's pretty demeaning if you use it directly to the person you refer to, so it's usually only used by (socially) superior people to their direct inferiors (i.e. subordinates). Phoenix is Naru no Ji by the way (or ossan....)

Oh, and if you're watching period dramas, I think it's also used there incorrectly as a form of an archaic nickname among friends.

Hmm, this makes me wonder what it's gonna translate to, since Athena for instance doesn't have any "moon" in her name in the english version, and I don't see how you can pick Apollo apart. The localisation team probably does something ingenious to change it.

Given how "[] no ji" is an archaic way of referring to someone, I'd think they go with something a little more squire-type: "Sir Justice", "Sir Wright"... "Lady Cykes".

If Simon's like a samurai in the JP ver, he'll be a knight in the EN ver. It's the most obvious jump, and his name too suggests so.

I guess Athena just follows the typical "studied abroad" formula - in Japan, it was in America. In America, it was in Germany/"Europe".

Anyway. Is the jurist system even mentioned in Dual Destinies? I know it's not present, but does it even get a tiny little mention?

Also,

Nope; for the sake of "no spoilers", would be my closest guess, but even that seems improbable. Capcom has been hush-hush about a lot of stuff lately.

Spoiler: 5-5
Because it's cool to face off against yourself. (I'd guess that he picks those people he's actually met in person, so he'd have a better idea of how to imitate them.)

On a separate note, it's easier on the graphic designers, since they don't have to make an entirely new face for that model.

... No spoilers? Hush-hush? But the jurist system only appeared in Case 4 of Apollo Justice... I'm just wondering if they did indeed just drop it entirely, or if maybe something happened to it between AJ and DD.

Spoiler: Case 5
Well yes, putting Phoenix's head on Phantom's body is easy, especially since Phantom also takes some of his animations, but that doesn't answer it contextually...

The German thing is the worst with Athena.... I really wanted her to study in Japan instead of Germany (America in Japanese version)

But then she'll have to change from Gratuitous German to Gratuitous Japanese...

Gratuitous German:

Gratuitous Japanese:
Athena: And we will! (Fill this in!)

Yeah, and it wouldn't make sense either way imo, since as I've understood it psychological problems are mostly ignored in Japan so why would Japan be an attractive place to study it then? I don't like that everything foreign in Ace attorney is either Borginia or American/German. Why not go to my country, Denmark to study it?

Then she would have to say it in Gratuitous Danish:
Athena: And we will! Så' det nu! (pronounced "Saa de noo!")

On second thought, the foreign letters would confuse :P

How about spanish then?
Athena: And we will! Vamos!

Anyway. How does the framerate feel in DD? We were used to 60fps in all the DS games, but DD seems to be locked at 30fps and I can see that it drops down below 20 in some severe cases. Is it noticable? Does the menus feel unresponsive, or is it just fine?

Well yes, putting Phoenix's head on Phantom's body is easy, especially since Phantom also takes some of his animations, but that doesn't answer it contextually...

Who knows. We're hoping it returns with some sort of explanation by GS6, if they so choose to take that path. They can still recover it at this stage; there's no particular mention of it, but there's no denial of it either.

Spoiler: And I did answer it contextually
Because he's disguised himself as Detective Fulbright throughout all those cases, he'd have met quite a few people to create masks of them. As to how he manages to find time to make those masks, I don't know. I'm more impressed by his hacking wristwatch myself.

Just fine; I don't see anything wrong with the fluidity of gameplay. It does slow down the fast forward sequences a bit, but it's not very noticeable anyway.

The left one is the Back Log. View the dialogue that has passed since the beginning of the chapter (until it's reset after every save point).

The right one is the Save Menu. Access the main menu from there. Be sure to save before you return, though.

Fyi, the Investigation Memo is filed next to the profiles in the Court Record. Check it out for hints of where to go and what to do.

Sweet.

Hints? Pah, hints, I'm probably not going to use them...kida nice if you miss an important thing you need to investigate or present.

Or Gratuitous French:
Athena: And we will! Ici nous allons!

No wait, too Phoenix-ish.
Phoenix: (to Franziska) Au contraire, mon frére! It does indeed have something to do with the question!

Or, for a shorter version, allons-y! And then the Doctor Who fandom would be pleased as well.

Spoiler: Regarding 5-5 still
So, I'm taking from this that Phantom doesn't really give a reason for impersonating Phoenix?

Nahp. Rule of cool, basically, but at least possible, contextually.
