When do you get tense in a videogame? Genre or what you are doing doesn't matter.

In Snowboard Kids games, I get tense whenever I am close to the finish line and I am just so set on making it over there. But I just know one of the AI opponents has something on them that will annoy me in some way.

I find it actually worse if I'm watching someone else play a game. Sometimes I watch Let's Plays, and I get really annoyed if the player is doing something I know isn't right. :sadshoe:

I think the most tense parts in games for me are timed ones. I hate having a time limit. I get immediately panicked. Even if it's a long timer, like in Dangan Ronpa.

When playing Pokemon and the foe's HP declines almost to zero and then they get to attack again when my Pokemon's HP is already pretty low :<

Also in any scary game when I hear any of the noises the game makes to freak me out owo;

Terrible, right? Especially if the player doesn't do something that you know is so easy to figure out. I watched KWife play Bikini Zombie Slayers and at one level I almost screamed at the screen, "You can jump up that stupid area, dammit! That's where the level continues! Jump! JUMP!"

Even worse. You get them to almost zero and you are so close to winning..... and the trainer uses a super potion....

In any Metroid game, when you have a sliver of energy left and you know the next room is crawling with enemies :sawit-2:

In Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3, when you have no x-factor Phoenix Wright as your final character, with no Turnabout Mode vs. any of the top tier characters :nick-sweat:

In most NES games, pretty much all the Goddamn time :redd:

Basically, any situation that you know one mistake will be the end. That sorta deal.

Dat rubber band AI. Pisses me off more than makes me tense, especially in Mario Kart. Gonna win, then some douche behind is all like "lolnopeblueshellkthxbye! :sillytrucy: " and I miss out on getting first because of that. Yay.

I think the worst ones are where the player can't find the door. And it's right in front of them! :grey:

The worst for me in those games is when your Pokemon is confused and you select attack...that split second waiting to see if you will hit yourself or not is so annoying, especially during big battles. Gahh.
Now, even if you apologize...I will not forgive you.

The Wonderful 101 and Asura's Wrath. Pretty much any time you need to button mash unexpectedly is like being told to riff out an intense guitar solo for 5-10 seconds straight with only a moment's notice.

This may sound silly, but some of my most tense video game moments come from Id Software's classic FPS games Wolfenstein and Doom. Even though these games are well over 20 years old, I find them to be far more effective than almost any modern FPS. The only game that's given me a similar feeling is the original BioShock.

When I'm playing stealth games like Metal Gear or Splinter Cell, I also get a similar feeling.

I will always, without fail, get tense in one of either situation:

a)I'm being timed

or

b)It's a stealth component

It's so bad that I will stop playing for ages and maybe even put the game down forever. My heart beats way too fast and I get so stressed out!
For example, I never even completed the first temple in Majora's Mask because I'm too anxious when I try to get past the guards or whatever they are at that monkey palace. The fact that you're timed for the whole game doesn't make it any better.

I find myself tense playing ANY Silent Hill game. Just those awful monster screams alone give me goosebumps.

The only one I remember is when I played Pokemon Colosseum as a kid and I used up my only Master Ball on the second to last boss. It took about 4 tries to snag that Pokemon with an ultra ball. I remember then feeling like my heart was going to fall out of my chest, but afterwards when I finally won the battle it felt amazing. I think I jumped and cheered at my victory. Tons of hype.

Oh, man, I just finished Pokemon Colosseum not that long ago, the end was indeed tense! I, of course, used the unlimited Pokeball cheat to use two Master Balls, but otherwise I would have lost for the.. what, fifth time? That Tyranitar...

Right?! It's just too bad I have to purchase Pokeballs in XD: Gale of Darkness.. But I do like the shadow Pokemon better in that one, and they're easier to purify quickly, so I suppose it's not all bad..

Fighting bosses in Rune Factory 3 on Hard Mode when I'm lagging... bad enough that I think I'm underleveled, but the lag just makes me tense. Ditto on when I see the boss about to attack and I'm in the middle of the extra-attack done at the end of a combo of my weapon. I can't move during those parts.

Games like Outlast and Amnesia are really tense, because there's almost always a monster (or fear of a monster) chasing you. I get so tense with these kind of horror games, I can't play for long. :larry:

In any of the Ouendan games, including Elite Beat Agents, when my health bar gets low when I'm close to the end of the song. It really gets me, especially in the final songs.

Following on from this awesome post, when you're trying to all 300 any song, and you're getting to the end with it perfectly done. So close to the end....you're almost there :nick-sweat:

I can never all 300 any songs, not even the first ones. I can get S ranks on basically every song on the first 2 difficulties of each game, but not all 300s.

Another moment that gets me is when I'm trying to go for a perfect in rhythm heaven and I'm near the end of the song, I get worried that I'm going to screw up.

Single most tense moment I had in a video game has got to be the final boss battle of Persona 3: FES. It took me almost 2 hours to win and came down to literally the final move I could make - if I had missed that one strike, it would have been Game Over. #neveragain

It's hard. Only ever gotten all 300's on a few songs here or there in Ouendan/Ouendan 2, and about half in EBA since it's the game I first played of the series. But it's just memorising the patterns and making sure you don't let the stylus off the screen too early/late, really. And you have to make the choice of pausing the game on a break to rest your hand/heart or riding the momentum to get the all 300 easier. Easier for some songs than others, since some are hella long or have tricky parts.

Playing Snatcher did make me a bit tense at times. The gore is pretty unsettling. Even though it's science fiction, Kojima definitely put in some horror elements. Also, it's not a game; but the Snatcher radio drama by Suda51 is pretty creepy. Especially with that kick-ass electronic/ambient score by Silent Hill composer Akira Yamaoka.

Anything that's timed, regardless of how long the timer is or how inconsequential the ultimate result is.

Even choosing the conversation options in Walking Dead started getting to me.

Pretty much any situation in which I'm one hit away from dying and not in a position to heal. Bonus points if the enemy I'm facing is also one hit away from dying.

Ah great games indeed. Kojima was really good at setting up the atmosphere in those game. I remember when Jonathan Ingram was speaking with his former wife about the Beyond. The details and music were so vivid that it felt like you were walking straight into danger.

As for recent tense moments in gaming for me. I recently beat overtime mode in Dead Rising (original XBOX 360 version). Brock nearly beat me until I found out that I could stand on the lower platform of the tank and somersault kick him till he fell. That look on his face before he feel to those zombies is a face I'll never forget.
