Original Post

Hey guys and gals!

I doubt anyone remembers, but back in 2010 I posted here (under a different username) about my project Turnabout RPG. Looking back it's pretty funny how stupid I was ("I think I'll make it in Flash!") but regardless, this is something I've finally started really working on and now, in honor of the upcoming DLC case, the first "trailer" is available!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1hJ8LrBv ... e=youtu.be

Watch this before looking under the spoiler tag, please.

Spoiler:
Ok, so you're probably watching that with a couple questions on your mind. Understandable. First off, no world map music yet. I know, I'm terrible. Also the castle town music is just a placeholder that I picked up somewhere (I do plan to use the Department Store music, but I'll be making my own version of it).

The battle system is going to be fairly simplistic, I'm not aiming for some crazy, flashy battles here. Each character will have his or her own special set of skills based on who they actually are (Maya, for instance, won't be a great attacker but she can channel several different spirits who can be used to adapt to any situation. Gumshoe on the other hand will have skills that help him play a tank-like role, because he's Gumshoe and he's awesome.) However, it's not a case of leveling up and getting skills linearly, you'll be able to choose different "branches" of skills to work down with points that you gain upon leveling up and completing certain sidequests.

I don't want to give too much plot away right now, but a super barebones summary of the beginning would say that Phoenix has taken on a new case with an extremely odd victim, murder weapon, and convict. He gets a call from Gumshoe to come by the crime scene, but when he gets there he's attacked and knocked out. Upon waking, he finds himself in a different world where he's treated by many as the savior from legend's past. But all the while, something seems seriously wrong in this world, and as the body count rises it's clear that this mysterious case and this mysterious world are heavily linked...

I feel pretty stupid summing it up so..."cliche"-y but I'm sure everyone you all will survive. Anyway, it honestly feels great to finally put this out there. I'm not really doing anything today, so if anyone has any questions, comments, complaints, "LOL ur stupid dis game is retarded as [expletive]" posts, or anything else, feel free to post away and I'll answer ASAP.

Hope you all enjoy the concept, I'll be periodically updating as time goes by!

Are you making that music all by yourself?

Haha, well, I won't deny I've had a bit of help from Gyakusheets for getting the structure of music done, but as far as remixes go, yes, I've done it myself. Of course, that's not saying much since I've only really composed the battle music so far (which I stupidly finished the battle before letting it all play).

Aww man you should totally check some of the music on OCR, they've got this piece which is just perfect for a PW RPG...like I'd use it myself if I could make one.

This one I think.

It's even got a little intro moment that you could use to show the enemies and players before bringing up the battle menu.

I'd also recommend some of the Cadenza tunes (hit em up on youtube) of PW music for boss tunes.

Funny you mention that, I actually have heard all of the OC Remixes and have been seriously debating whether or not I want to ask for permission to use any of them. Specifically Trance Turnabout, if I could use only one. Thanks for the input, I may need to just go ahead and ask them!

It's fanmade with no royalties s'far as I know but yeah it's how I'd run it if I had any talent or knowledge of how to make things.

Hey, this is really cool so far. I really like how well the songs you chose fit in the areas they played (albeit, there were only two of them, but that's beside the point). I'm looking forward to the finished product.

Thanks a lot, I appreciate it! Hopefully when it's ready to have a half-decent real trailer (that, perhaps, is done using screen cap software rather than my phone) it'll look even more appealing. I'm not gonna lie, AA's music is so varied that it's really not hard choosing what song I could use with any certain place. Actually composing the music for the game, however...

You know what's the best theme for the final boss? It sounds perfect for an RPG final boss.
"Oh holy father, holy Brother, holy master... My sacred mission is at last complete. With these two hands, mankind is saved. I am your will made flesh. In your name, I give thanks."

It's not bad, but it's a character specific theme, and I'm not sure it's intense enough, you'd need to hunt out some super cornered remix for the final boss I think.

I never really thought about DD music (mostly because I started planning this before DD was ever announced), but you're right, this would work well. Thanks for the suggestion! Another song I always liked was the OCRemix 'Trance Turnabout', found here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NRaeWWPBeOw.

I'm not gonna lie, those OCRemixes were, for some reason, a huge inspiration for this idea. I'd prefer to make all of the game's music specifically for the game, but if I were to end up using already created songs, OCRemixes would be all over the place.

This looks like an interesting project, will monitor this thread until the game's release.

What RPG engine are you using for this project?

Hi there,

Sorry I'm just now getting back to you! It's nothing special, just good ol' RPG Maker VX Ace.

Guess who hasn't updated in over a year! Yeah, I probably should have updated but every time I was going to, I was like "wait, there's more!" and had to do a bit more work. Anyway, let me share what progress has occurred and then I have a few music samples.

The game itself has been progressing ok. Obviously it's somewhat of an on-and-off thing. Basically I have a sickness that makes it difficult to work on this much, so progress is slow. I have the first bit of story all put together in the game and the twenty minutes or so is totally playable. What I've been up to is fine-tuning a few of the game's systems that I'll talk about in a later update. Hopefully they'll be a lot of fun!

Anyway, on to a few music samples. There's a couple that I feel totally proud of and a couple that could use a bit more work maybe, but let's see what you guys all think.

Town Theme: https://soundcloud.com/discipledoctor/town-theme

Dungeon Theme: https://soundcloud.com/discipledoctor/dungeon-theme

Castle Town: https://soundcloud.com/discipledoctor/castle-town

World Map: https://soundcloud.com/discipledoctor/world-map

That's all for now. I have another update planned but who knows when it'll come? Hopefully not a year from now.
