Okay, so I'm not sure this is supposed to be here, but, this is a theory I developed while thinking about the series. Please be advised that this contains spoilers about GS2, GS3 and GS4. I think that Morgan, shortly after the events of 3-5, layed a curse on Phoenix.

Spoiler:
Morgan was a promising spirit medium, who had two daughters of the Fey blood. She was, however, outcast by her younger sister, wich caused her husband to leave her with their two daughters. She lost everyone she loved, she lost her career as the future master, and she also had another daughter, Pearls, and had to work at something she wasn't good at (training the mediums), while being looked down by everyone due to failing at being the master, for 15 years. After that, she went to jail, met her daughter Dollie, and then failed at another of her plan. Shortly after she was probably executed, and then her enraged spirit layed a curse on Wright.

Spoiler:
After the events of 3-5, Maya and Pearl, Wright's two assistants of Fey blood, left him. On a trial, he was defeated by Klavier, a prosecutor younger than him. He then lost his job and was looked down by everyone for 'using fake evidence'. He had to take care of a young daughter, Trucy, while playing piano, a work he wasn't good at, for seven long years.

Well, take your conclusions, and feel free to point out any flaws.

Spirits can lay curses? If that's true, then why didn't Dahlia just curse Maya?

After the events of 3-5, Phoenix, Maya and Pearl are seen on a boat in Gatewater Land one month later, as seen in Ace Attorney Investigations Case 3. If they had left him, it's because Maya now has to go through more training now that she's Master of Kurain.

These are both direct and indirect results of Kristoph's "plan." Why does it have to be the result of a curse?

I'm not sure what you're saying, to be honest. Do you mean Morgan said she cursed Phoenix? Because anyone can do that, and it doesn't mean that a few words uttered by a bitter soul (dead or alive) will end up having any impact on the cursed person. (Not that Morgan had any spiritual power to begin with...)

I should mention we don't know when Morgan was executed (or if she was simply transferred to a different cell). Assuming Morgan succeeded in 'laying a curse' that damaging, it would have had to happen sometime between February (after the last failed plot to kill Maya) and April 2019 (Phoenix's disbarring). A fairly short window of time. Again, we hear nothing of Morgan being hanged during these couple of months, and if Pearl is speaking of her mother in present tense during State vs. Iris, we can assume Morgan is still alive at that point.

The most logical conclusion from this is that she cursed at him. I can completely understand that feeling.

But, if your core argument revolves around the concept that spirits are capable of laying curses on others, then likewise, a more powerful spirit could protect him, thus canceling out any effects whatsoever.

On the other hand, she may have known he would screw himself over at some point. Too bad for her, he got back his job anyway and kicked ass... but not before getting his own dragged out of the office by a chief prosecutor. Perhaps that's what was the result of these spiritual powers at work? Hey, I'm satisfied with it.

If this was the case, then it looks like spirit curses have some sort of expiration date, because Nick's back just as good as he ever was in DD.
