Because Capcom thinks without Chicks, no chick player is gonna play the damn game. Because god forbid, we cannot have a serious, levelheaded guy as our assistant for the game. No, it has to be a young girl who treats the protagonist like a total idiot.
Yeah, everyone does it, but you'd think the assistant, who is generally also a friend of the protagonist, wouldn't be that harsh on him.

Eh it was a shame we only had one case where Apollo got to be the assistant to Phoenix. I don't think it's so bad, or that the assistant is there to appeal to a female demographic.

Besides Athena despite being an teenage girl doesn't strike me as being the usual incompetent assistant as she is perfectly capable of offering legal advice. I suppose it's the difference between having Mia or Diego as opposed to someone a bit more clueless about court like Trucy and Ema.

Although Trucy, technically, has no "reason" to not know about law. Yeah, her adoptive father was a disbarred lawyer, but he still... should... know about law.

They only do that when you get an answer wrong.
...Which, if you figured out the true culprit early the first time around, you will be doing a lot.Usually, this is where you complain about knowing everything prior to the main characters figuring it out.
And serious question, Cat. Did you play Dual Destinies? Before reading most of the spoilers on this site?

No. And really, I don't care about the spoilers.
Plus, the assistants can be pretty "petty mean" towards the protagonist, even without getting something wrong.

I can't believe I've never read those comics before. I'm always rereading the Hiimdaisy comics, though.

I like Phoenix's different assistants, but I think some variation in their ages would be nice. :ron:

I actually think I have seen the artist's work before, but I've never read the comics. They are really funny, though. Edgeworth's secret love for the Steel Samurai is one of my favourite jokes in the entire series. :edgey:

Agree to disagree. I'd like some variety in age/personality too, but I love the fact Ace Attorney has significant female characters, and I like the dynamic between more outgoing assistants and the... less-so protagonists. Phoenix and Apollo are grown men. They can take some teasing; my best friends have always given me a harder time about things than anyone else. Doesn't mean they aren't there for me when it's really needed.

I would probably have a lot of the same problems with a "serious, levelheaded guy" that you have with upbeat young girls. It's all a matter of taste, I suppose.

How about we compromise and get a 'serious, levelheaded girl' for once? Nearly all assistants are energetic, upbeat, and cheerful, which is fine, and they do have personality changes, but there's also a sense of repetitiveness. I don't mind female or male assistants so long as they're interesting...
One could swap a more outgoing attorney with a less-so assistant or something.

Haha, no objections from my end of things. I do like most of the assistants a lot, but I agree with you about it getting to be repetitive. They found a formula that worked pretty well and kept using it.

I think a role-reversal in terms of personality types is unlikely to happen, since the more straightforward character is usually deemed more relatable/playable, but I'd like to see it done nonetheless! Could be interesting.

(In my ideal world, I'd rather they stopped adding protagonists for a while, and went with different combinations of the plenitude of major characters that already exist... but that's even less likely!)

Serious levelheaded Female? You mean Mia? She's been there a fair bit, granted she 'tags out' with Maya/Pearl but she does provide a calm, wise voice to a scenario.

Also since we're dropping awesome comics Awkward Zombie did another amazing Ace Attorney one.

I think I'd much rather it be this way, too. The whole adding new prosecutors and such each game worked fine early on, but there are so many characters now, and it's pushing great characters to the background and cameo appearances.

I wish Mia would be in the next game. :larry:

I love that comic. I felt particularly with this game that they were pushing the player in obviously incorrect directions, and while I guess that was present in past games, it really got noticeable in DD.

I want Mia back, too! She definitely fits the bill, but I don't really consider her an assistant. Even when she helps out in an assistant-y way, I think of her as the mentor. Either way, she's fantastic and doesn't get nearly enough love.

Still. I know a lot of people think the Feys' story arc is done and should stay that way, but you could argue the same of Phoenix. The Feys are my favourite, and I can't help but think of Phoenix as kind of a de facto part of that family. It's nice to know Pearl and Maya are still a part of his life, at least.

... On a side note, I love that comic, too. I feel like this game dropped a lot more obvious hints than I would have liked. There's always been quite a bit of disjointed game logic, but it feels like it happens a lot more in this one. It's the worst feeling to think you've figured something out and then the game makes you take another ridiculous detour and then spells it out for you much, much later. It's not an accomplishment if you tell me the answer!

It's strange, because I never really cared too much about Mia when I first played the series through, I guess what with all the other more striking personalities in the games, but now she's not in it, I really miss her. I appreciate her character much more now.

I love the Feys as well. I really hope the future games don't stray too far from the original trilogy. I understand it's good to have something new, but they could have just had a completely different arc with a whole new set of characters for that. I just feel like if they're going to bring in the old characters, they should stay true to them and include them in the story. I like Apollo and Trucy, and even Athena to some extent, but I really don't want it to move in a direction where the series is centred around those characters alone. Surely the new arc could still develop Edgeworth and the Feys a little further, too. I hope so at least.

I hate it when that happens in anything! I recently read a mystery novel, and the blurb was boasting about a great twist at the end, but when finished it, I realised the so-called great twist was something I had assumed as a given when I first started reading! I also played a game recently where something pretty obvious to me happened, but the character in the game just went along with it, only figuring it out later. That kind of thing makes me way too mad! :dahlia:

No, I get it if you don't like it. That's fine. What's not fine is giving an opinion on something without experiencing it for yourself. I don't care if you like Kingdom Hearts or not, but saying it's a pile of shit without playing it first and only looking at someone else's opinion (especially VGR's) is something that grinds my gears. It's like if I said: "FFXIII sucked because the game was too easy and all the characters did was angst. It's true, my friend told me so!" Meaning if you had played it without prior opinions in your mind, even the first half-hour, then called it a pile of shit, I would be content. Not that I'm saying to go out and do that, because don't.

I have nothing against giving your first impressions on a game, whether it's from simply seeing something or having experienced it for a bit - heck, my first impressions on Tales of Graces were anything but good and even after calming down, I still think the translation of the game is too cheesy, the characters one dimensional, any romance (that is not RichardxAsbel) feels tacked on and the game having a filibuster-like ending for me. But my first impressions were just like it.

The only thing I don't condone is playing a game for barely an hour and then saying it's shit. I felt like saying the battle system for Graces was shit during the childhood arc because it was literally mashing X over and over with directions as an option to kill things. But I told myself it would improve, that it definitely wouldn't remain so simple later on - after the childhood arc, the battle system became more intricate.
Same with XIII, by the way.

Wait a minute! You're contradicting yourself! You said that you thought that Tales Of Graces looked bad, but once you played it, you liked it, yet you still say that you think Kingdom Hearts is a pile of shit despite never playing it! You're not making any sense!

I never said I liked Graces.

Well I still think it's contradictory to say no-experience first impressions are valid opinions but one-hour experiences are not.

First impressions come without having the immediate experience of having actually done something.
My first impression of Skyward was that it'd suck, simply cause it was on the Wii and that was years ago, when it was simply first being announce, with nothing really mentioned except the Spirit of the Master Sword.

Lots of people on the GameFAQs board, though, played Skyward for barely an hour and immediately decide to call it the worst game ever, despite never even managing to get into the first dungeon. Seriously, somebody says they gave up before they got into the first dungeon, but now think they might need to give the game a second chance, cause the dungeons they saw via video footage looked cool.

Hmm no I'd say first impressions are defined as the first actual experiences you have with something or someone. Otherwise it's classed as an expectation or an unfounded fear.

Though the semantics of what it means isn't really the issue here. You say folks who play for an hour and are unhappy have less valid opinions on what a game is like than those who perhaps watch a trailer or are merely aware of it but haven't done anything with it at all. That's pretty contradictory in my eyes since at least the people who tried it for an hour have some experience. Also for some games...that's all you'd need.

The Walking Dead doesn't evolve it's gameplay drastically over the course of the game, neither especially does the Ace Attorney series but you could probably get a good feel for whether you'd like to see more of the game in an hour of play.

Yeah, I agree with you, Pierre. Someone who's never played a game is in no position to criticize it, and to think of criticizing a work based on half hour experiences as somehow being worse than looking at footage and declaring it to be bad makes no sense. It's quite hypocritical. Most times I find myself agreeing with you, Cat, this time, I cannot.
