Nope, it's a sequel.
The game's story takes place two years after the events of Symphonia. The protagonist is named Emil. All of the party members from the original Symphonia will return to unite with the new protagonists.
The game will use Tales of the Abyss's Flex Range Linear Motion Battle System.

At least Kratos won't be back, but wouldn't that make it 10 characters, and only 2 are new? ;-;
Hopefully it uses ToS data, so my eight playthroughs will have a benefit. >_>
EDIT: According to a picture I saw, Zelos is in the game and Colette's path is canon.

Kratos was my favorite as well, he was most like a Red mage in fighting style. He can really do anything, from Magic, to healing, to melee fighting, and has decent defenses and speed. Also, he has judgement, which Zelos does not. Zelos is cool, though. Judgement is nearly unusable unless you use it as that huge 1st player combo thing.
Unfortunetly, Kratos had to go and float out to Darris Kharlan at the end of the game. Although, at least they said they'll all be returning.
Kratos never came off as emo to me. Despite what's happened to him, he never came off as angsty, nor did he really ever whine about what's happened to him. Speed wise, and pretty much combat wise, I'm pretty sure Kratos and Zelos are the exact same. Don't hate him just because he's popular.
Tales of Symphonia is also one hell of a multiplayer game. I play it will my three other brothers, and our party tends to consist of Lloyd, genis, Raine, and Kratos. Quite fun, battles are so much better when you're fighting with human companions. It gives the game a whole new level of enjoyment, and we replay the game every summer. Never gets old.

Can't wait :D
Zelos and Lloyd were the only two characters I could play decently well with. (Slow reflexes and all...) When I played with my brother, he always chose Lloyd so I always played as Zelos... :)
Hmmm. I do like Kratos, also. I'm a sucker for both those types of characters, so there.

In the PS2 version Zelos has Judgment and Divine Judgment and Severing Wind, but Kratos only gets Guardian Field and Shining Bind (Zelos also gets SB). :EZelos also gets free items!
And Kratos's picture wasn't in the picture with the other ToS characters...
Kratos seems like he wants to punish himself for Mithos and Anna. >_>
And Zelos is most definitely faster...
And yeah.

I love Tales games and all, but unless there's gonna be an English release, screw it. I don't want to wait for someone to translate every box of text in the game and then put it on gamefaqs so that when you want to know what the heck someone's saying, you have to walk over to your computer and try to find it in that endless flow of text.
Or, if you've got the resources to print the whole thing out, find the page that has the translations on it.
Onto a different matter, I know it's possible to enjoy some of the game without being able to understand what they're saying, (And I will admit that some of the attack names sound much cooler in Japanese. Majinken!) but Tales of <blank> games are too story driven to play like that for long. Especially if it's at one of those points where you're supposed to go somewhere, but you don't know where to go because you don't speak Japanese.
For those who tl;dr'd it,
"...Man! Friggin' games in foreign languages! I'll wait at least 100 years until Namco comes along and translates it instead."

Considering I never bothered putting either Kratos or Zelos in my party due to only needing healzorz from Raine and pure warrior characters... screw the both of them. Kratos especially because he's just a pretty bland cliché.

And Zelos's neutral attack is much, much faster.
And Judgment sucks and is only spell delay for healing and good spells. Ones that hit all the time. >_>
