I'm a bit suspicious though that there's one Fire Pokemon and one Water Pokemon.... Seems to me that we'll still have a Grass Pokemon lurking to complete the trio.
Though, the question becomes... Which grass Pokemon will we see?

Also, as far as I can tell Greninja and Charizard aren't a team, they're individual characters. As such, this isn't a Pokémon Trainer situation; I doubt we'll get a grass type as another playable character. And if we are getting another Pokémon character, odds are just as good for Jigglypuff to come back.

I think the value was less in just getting Greninja but the kickass psudo-battle we got that showcased Charizard's return.

Sakurai has gone on record that he considers third party characters as "special cases", and that he doesn't want to add too many third party characters because then the game would lose its appeal as a Nintendo-centric fighting game. If we get any more third party characters, it'll likely be a Bandai-Namco character, as they're co-developing the game.

On characters:
Transformations have been removed, so the following characters that were once transformations of former characters are now solo. Five more characters were revealed, so this brings the total number of confirmed characters so far to 29. Also, you can customize the attack styles of your characters, but they only show up in online battles when playing with friends.

Just to note here, Color-TV Game 15 is not Pong, it's one of Nintendo's earliest game consoles only released in Japan in the late 70's.
On stages:
Final Destination can be customized to look like other stages in the game. It's unknown if this includes every stage. Also, much like Melee and Brawl, the new games will feature retro stages from previous games, but these will differ between versions of the game.

Pokémon X/Y Elite Four stage (different rooms can be seen in Greninja's reveal trailer)
On items:
There are now two types of pokéballs. The regular pokéball can have almost any Pokémon inside, while the Masterball houses rarer and legendary Pokémon.

Multiplayer:
The game features both ranked and unranked multiplayer. The former includes a ranking known as Global Smash Power, which ranks you as being better than a certain number of other global players. For example, if you're ranked 300,000, that means you're better than 299,999 other players.
In local multiplayer or when online with friends, all rules can be altered much like Brawl. Online with strangers is somewhat different, see the next section.
Special multiplayer mode:
Smash Run (3DS only?) - Based on City Trial from Kirby's Air Ride, players have 5 minutes to run around a maze to collect power ups from enemies. These power ups give them additional attributes like enhanced attack, speed and defense, which the players then use against each other in battle.
Online:
Both versions of the game have online multiplayer, though obviously the 3DS version's was more detailed as it's coming out sooner. What was confirmed for both is that while the fighters will run at 60FPS, everything else will likely run at 30FPS to reduce lag. Sakurai also included a list of things that will get you banned if done online, which includes the following:

For Fun - a basic mode where all items and stages are available. Just regular Smash battles here.
For Glory - no items,
And that's everything. Hopefully the 3DS version will be enough to keep me occupied until the Wii U version. I can't wait to see you guys on the battlefield.

Although I have to say, I find it rather funny that Nintendo is treating Mega Man better than Capcom these days. First including him when Capcom just seems to be letting the series collect dust, celebrating his history by giving him game-specific moves, and now the final smash. I mean, they even included Rockman Volnutt from Legends! Capcom, take note.
