So are Lightweight karts always going to lose out in the end? Since a heavyweight can offset it's weaknesses with enough skill but a lightweight will never be able to go fast?

Also that's a bizarre category for her, I wouldn't say her nor Waluigi look especially 'heavy'.

I blame the Luma she has with her.

Maybe, maybe not. One huge advantage lightweights have is acceleration; they can recover from damage much more quickly, which definitely comes in handy on the higher difficulty levels. Unless you happen to get hit when you're holding a Mushroom or near a boost panel, you're going to have a much harder time recovering as a heavyweight. That's one weakness heavyweights can't offset, and on the item-spam-prone 150cc and Mirror difficulties, that weakness can be decisive. Also, while I can manage good handling with Rosalina and other "lesser heavyweights," that's not as easy to pull off with Bowser and the "superheavies." It's a classic case of diminishing returns, in my opinion. Ultimately, I think it's a question of what you're up against and what you expect to cause the most problems for you.
Pierre wrote:

It's not necessarily a matter of the character's weight. Rosalina and Waluigi might not be particularly heavy, but they're both quite tall and require larger vehicles as a result. All else equal, a larger vehicle is heavier than a smaller one.

That was, literally, the EXACT theory I came up with in MK Wii.

Funny, I always just imagined her body is lighter in space, which would allow her to float/hover, and that under Earth's gravity she's just naturally heavy.

Has anyone tried to upload a highlight onto youtube yet?

I'm trying it myself but the time is skyrocketing without any sensible reason. Started at 4 minutes and jumped up to 38, I want to know if it's a problem with the process or my internet.

I guess I missed the question before, but my main character is my Mii. Mostly because I'm a total narcissist the stats best match my play style.

Image

My kart set up so far has been Mr. Scooty with blue standard tires and the Bowser glider. It's fast without being uncontrollable, just have to watch out for those corners.

I've done a couple. In my experience, the upload time tends to vary by how long the video is and the upload rate of the internet connection. 38 minutes is pretty excessive though. Longest for me has been 10 minutes tops.

[sarcasm]Thanks for that mini-turbo, Piranha Plant. How did you know I wanted to go off-course and into the grass?[/sarcasm]

I no longer like the Piranha Plant item as much as I used to. The mini-turbo its bites give is nice on straightaways, but when you're on a sharp turn... not so much.

As far as 'close combat' items go it's a great improvement on the Tanuki tail I feel. The boost helps you catch up with people which means the plant will get used, the problem with the Tanuki tail is that you didn't get anything to help you engage people and often going off course to hit someone with the Tanuki tail will just cost you time anyway.

Of course the downside to this is the plant can't be used defensively like the Tanuki tail could as it won't hit behind you.

Does anyone know...I have a vague memory of one of the games allowing you to steal items from a foe if you rammed them with a mushroom boost. THAT was a close combat mechanic I liked.

I could be wrong but I think it was also only in the special co-op mode, the person on the back could attack to steal items.

Well whatever game it was it was a fantastic mechanic, because odds are if you boost past someone you are just lining yourself up for an easy shot so taking a weapon from them nullified that.

I actually find mushrooms more often a curse than a boon, because they always show up on courses when I can't deal with the boost...like Rainbow Road or Bowser's Castle where there's so many fatal turns that any excess forward momentum will send you over an edge.

I think he means a tournament, since communities were in MK7. I probably would've made one already if we had already agreed on a time we could all play together, but we kind of got caught up talking about the game itself, and E3 came along, etc.

So I guess we can get the ball rolling. Is there a preferable day and time we can all play together?

I'm really enjoying Mario Kart 8 at the moment. Online is a lot of fun, I'm aiming to get to 3000 points soon! I always play as baby Peach with the Yoshi bike, button wheels and the cloud glider thing. (I can't quite remember the name of it...)

Well, if we're going to have anything resembling a tournament, sharing IDs is the first step, is it not? I'll go ahead and start by sharing mine. It's GeneralLuigi. Fair warning: if you want to be my friend on the Nintendo Network, you'll have to first state your ID here or in a PM. Otherwise, I'll reject the request even if your ID makes it painfully obvious who you are.

So that's four people now. If my sister joins me on my end, that makes five. Here's hoping I can get a good race out of at least one of you. I'll do what I can to give you three an incentive to do well (though there is a chance it won't encourage all of you to do well).

Just wondering, any thought to the ruleset we'll be using for this? COM racers on/off, acceptable controls, random/select courses, etc?

My preference is 100cc, free-for-all, COMs on (unless we can get together a group of twelve), standard items. I tend to favor random courses, but I can't exactly prevent anyone else from favoring a particular course.

Why only 100cc's? Where's your need for speed? Besides isn't COM difficulty separate from speed setting in the rulesets?

Also the way courses are selected is kind of random anyway I really like it. Doubt we'd need to favour random courses.

I believe COM difficulty is separate from the speed setting, so that's a good point. I guess I'm just too used to 150cc meaning brutal COM opponents. I'm fine with losing to a human player, but I've done so many Grands Prix that losing to an AI opponent still gets to me.

For me it's because it's really all or nothing with AI, we can accept losing to a human because we know they are skilled and deserve it, whereas the AI just feels like they are ALL out to get you when you lose.

I'll sign you guys up at some point in hopes that we can do this thing. I was going to do it today, but our power randomly went out. =/

As for preferences, I don't really have any. I mean, I guess I'm used to 100cc since it's the default option online and in versus when I'm playing with others, so I don't know how well I'd fare in 150cc. I don't care if computers are on or off. As for tracks, I'm pretty much fine with whatever, random or choice.

By the way, out of curiosity, who do you guys main? As for me, I've been maining Rosalina. She's been serving as Funky Kong's substitute from Wii, but I think she's been doing pretty well. Granted, I'm not the best racer, but I'm all for casual racing anyways.

It sort of clicks when you go through 'set speed' segments (like the cannon in Waluigi's Pinball) and the computer is somehow overtaking you.

As for my main it's Luigi of course.

I tend to favor Rosalina, too. Out of the four characters in my current preferred weight class (Donkey Kong, Waluigi, Roy, and Rosalina), she's my favorite.
