Yeah and did that game Answer all Questions it raised? Nope!
Did it raise more Questions than it originally would have as an Ocarina sequel? YES!

The game, right? Which is why I play Zelda games, too. I want gameplay, fighting monsters and puzzles. THAT's what Zelda is about. Zelda games were NEVER about a big story, NOR were they ever about a stupid background story happening throughout all the games. Anybody who goes into a Zelda game and expects a big epic story and then gets disappointed only has himself to blame. Zelda games have no big story. It's always "Save the World".

I just finished the Ancient Cistern yesterday. I have to say, it was a really neat idea for a dungeon and the boss was fun.

Yay! I LOVE the Ancient Cistern, I always look forward to going into the dungeon! Well except the basement... last time I played the game, I used a little trick to skip most of it. But the design, the appearances, the music, the atmosphere, it's just beautiful.

I don't mind story in my Zelda game if it's done well. I just don't like it when they use story to try to connect it to other existing Zelda games. However, the exceptions I make to that are Seasons and Ages since they are simultaneous, and Zelda II and Majora's Mask as they serve as direct sequels.

I mean, yeah, I love Wind Waker, but when they try to relay it back to Ocarina of Time, it gave me the feeling that it was still trying to live off of that game's hype instead of trying to come into its own. Twilight Princess did this too, and I didn't care for it all that much. Instead of wanting to be OoT 2.0, it should be a game that can stand on its own. I'm all for references and easter eggs, but tying a game's plot directly to another one just because it was the best received in the series rubs me the wrong way. It'd be like every Final Fantasy game after VII having their plot mentioning the use of Mako or Shinra because FFVII was so popular.

As for my thoughts on Skyward Sword right now... (currently just beat the desert Silent Realm)

I'm really enjoying most of the aesthetics in Skyward Sword. It feels so much more colorful than the brown realistic vibe that Twilight Princess gave out. I really liked the look of Faron Woods and I like the whole Timeshift Stones in Lanayru Desert. The dungeon designs seem neat too. I liked the different take on the forest dungeon and the technological thing in the desert dungeon. I'm not really for seeing Link in a steampunk world, but I would really like at least a steampunk dungeon, just to see how Link would handle a more modern area, and Skyward Sword kinda did that. I kinda exclude Eldin Volcano from wowing me because it's kinda the same lava area we've seen before.

The Ancient Cistern was pretty neat. I liked the whole heavenly Buddha vibe it gave and it was so different from anything that's been seen in the series. I liked the whole heaven/hell concept, the climbing up the string from hell before the undead tried to drag you back down. It was a cool idea that I felt went well. Even the boss itself modeled after what I assume is Asura or something was a neat touch and fun to fight. I liked getting to use its own weapon against itself.

That all said though, so far, I think the biggest problem the game has that really has me from liking it is the whole motion control gimmick. It took me 3 dungeons to kinda get down how to use my sword correctly and how to fly my bird. In the beginning, I was stocking up on as many potions as I could because the motion was hard for me. Those spiders in the first dungeon were terrible for me. I can kill them easily now, but figuring it out for the first time was a pain. Also trying to time my shield bashs because I can't defend legit is really tough for a first time player. And that bird, not knowing how to fly a bird to make him fly up. So. Much. Frustration. Getting to Skyloft was a pain!

The game has gotten better since I've adapted, but the fact that it took a while, I feel, was bad. Even then, I still have trouble at times, but not as often as the beginning. To wait until the third dungeon before I kinda got a handle on how to fight is not fun. I felt like I was just playing Zelda survival for the longest time.

That all said though, I do appreciate how they handled the enemies, much to my chagrin at the beginning. Making the combat more puzzle based I think is pretty neat. Yeah, there are times where I want to hack and slash, but it does try to provide a learning curve to figure out how to use your sword. If only the motion controls were better, I'd probably like it more.

I've also heard complaints about the Silent Realms being akin to the Twilight Realm bug catching in Twilight Princess, but so far, I've found the former much more tolerable. I hated searching for those stupid bugs to collect the souls or whatever in TP. I think the reason I prefer the Silent Realms though too is you get a much more tangible reward for completing them other than story progression and saving the guardian of the area. Granted, I've only done 2 of them so far.

That's pretty much my thoughts on Skyward Sword at the moment. As of right now, I really don't think it's the first Zelda I'd really want to go back to if I want to play a Zelda game, but I'm at least happy that I'm getting the experience. I don't feel it's a terrible experience and I think the good outweighs the bad, despite the bad being pretty significant on the game itself. I think I'd like it more if it wasn't filled with motion gimmicks, but to each their own.

I have to ask, how was the first fight against Ghirahim for you, if you still had trouble with the controls? He's a Wake Up Call Boss, there to see if you figured out the controls, cause if you try to battle him with the typical hack and slash, you get your sword taken and bitch slapped across the room.

I dunno how you set up the remote. Is it light in your room, how far are you from the sensor and all? I don't think it's necessary to really stand up to play this game... I never did, I sit hunkered in a chair, very un-straight and I even played the game lying down on my bed and I didn't have any trouble.

The Silent Realms are nice... at first. I don't mind them, I just mind the music. You know, when you get chased. What I didn't like is that it's the same thing every time you get one. When I first played the game and I heard that Farore's Realm tested your Courage, I thought cool! I thought this one had me collect them weaponless. I thought Nayru's would include solving puzzles to get to the Tears and, not really spoilers, that Din's would involve gaining a weapon in the Silent Realm and fighting the guardians to drop the Tears. You know, each being modeled after the triforce parts... Unfortunately, it's not like that. That was kind of a low point for me.

Ghirahim was...okay I guess. A lot of it had to do with how unprepared I went in for and how much of a beating the dungeon took on me. Like I said, those spiders were annoying for a while on figuring out how to kill. I ended up using a fairy on them alone.

So, when I went for Ghirahim, I had one bottle of red potion left, 4 hearts, and one hit left on my flimsy shield. The first part of the battle was okay. He took my sword once and grabbed it a few times, but I was able to land a lot of hits on him, though I think a lot was luck considering how I was doing. The second phase... felt easier... until I missed a shield bash and he broke my shield. He then proceeded to own me. Somehow, after my red potion, I managed to make it out with 2 hearts left. Funny thing was, after my shield broke, he maybe had 3 hits left, but I had difficulty managing that. If I had just fixed my shield (which I was unaware about at the time), it would have gone better.

I think overall, the dungeon, and figuring out the controls probably messed me up more than Ghirahim did, though it's probably up for debate. Ironically enough though, I somehow took down the mini-boss in 10 seconds with some lucky shield bash stuns. At least that was satisfying.

As for the setup, it's pretty light. I'm about 15 feet away from the sensor. I mostly played sitting down in a chair, though for some reason, I had to stand up for the eye puzzle in the first dungeon. I figured it out first thing, but since the motion was bad, I thought it was the wrong solution, thus proceeding me to spending 30 minutes figuring it out, only to go online and see that what I thought was the solution was correct, and then feeling frustrated for wasting time because of the motion controls!

I have found though with my more recent setup of sitting on the floor playing, the game plays better. I'm still about the same distance away, but I think being in the chair from an angle from the TV had something to do with it while on the floor, I'm straight in front of everything. I didn't start doing this until the third dungeon though, so it might contribute a little bit to getting a bit better.

I'm not a fan of the Silent Realms, but they feel more tolerable than the bug hunting to get rid of the twilight in Twilight Princess. I don't like stealth in a Zelda game where it's all about hacking and slashing, if I wanted to do stealth, I'd play a game designed for stealth. However, I find it tolerable because Link controls fairly well when unequipped, so it feels okay. I like that even when you're spotted, you still have time to save yourself instead of getting thrown out like in other games. I hate those search light guys though. You would think by being quiet and stealthy that they wouldn't take notice of you, but no. Even with their backs turned, the moment you're in their sensory range, they'll find you, save for a couple who aren't programmed to do that.

I did the forest one in one go. The desert, I took a few tries, but mostly because it was a mixture of Dusk Relic grinding and scoping out an effective path. Once I took it seriously, I finished it in my first serious go, so it wasn't that bad. Still, these sections aren't that great, but I can tolerate them.

I like your idea too about the Silent Realms. I would have liked it if Farore's was doing the stealth, Nayru's had some kind of puzzle, and Din's had some kind of combat related thing. It would have made it feel more connected with the Goddesses.

Though, now I'm curious storywise too. I know the three goddesses created Hyrule and the Triforce. So where does Hylia play in all this? Was she a goddess strictly made to seal the imprisioned? Is she on the same level as the other 3 goddesses, or does she rank higher or lower? If any of these questions are answered later, then that's fine. I just hope being named Hylia and all, that they didn't retcon the story so that she created Hyrule or the Triforce or something like that.

Yeah the Eye puzzle was confusing for me because Skyward was the first game I had that had mandatory motion controls and a large focus on them. I thought I had to hit the eye with the slingshot after making it open by having the sword out, but I was wrong. Had to look online for that...

Btw did you pick up the little bottle of purple liquid in the sealed temple room? Replenishes 4 Hearts + heals the shield.

As for Hylia... no, none of those are actually answered. At times, it almost sounds like Hylia always was a normal human who was a priestess and made into a deity or so. Or maybe I misunderstood. There's no proper rank given on where she is compared to the Goddesses, in fact the Goddesses themselves are never really mentioned... we still have no idea where the Triforce came from (only that the Gods left it for man because... *shrug*) although it is heavily mentioned that, at the end of the game, the creation of Hyrule begins. I quite honestly find Hylia to be... pointless. Since she doesn't really do anything helpful except give you the harp.

As for Stealth... well there IS one stealth section to come, where I guess you will be thrown into prison if you're spotted... but it still seems a bit lenient. In the multiple playthroughs I have done, I think there was one playthrough where I was semi-spotted. They seemed to notice me, but it was easy enough to avoid being found-found.

No, I didn't pick it up. That probably hurt me. =/ Having a goddess shield now though, I don't need that stuff anymore, but that really would have helped me against Ghirahim, considering how ill prepared I was.

Ocarina of Time basically established that the 3 goddesses created the Triforce and considering it was the origin story before Skyward Sword, I was wondering if they messed with that. While I hate the whole timeline thing, I at least want consistency if they're going to be addressing the origins of Hyrule. The only way I'd accept them messing it up is if the game took place far in the future and the passing of legends or whatever got misinterpreted.

Yeah, Hylia kinda seems like a tack on right now, just existing to drive the story rather than be apart of any of what makes Hyrule.

Glad the stealth won't be too bad. My favorite stealth section I believe goes to Link Between Worlds if only because you have the cool "go into the wall" ability, which makes it so much better. I also appreciate how Majora's Mask allows you to bypass the huge stealth section in the game as well by giving you the stone mask. Honestly, with Zelda, I wish they gave you the option on whether you want to stealth an area or cut through it instead of giving you forced stealth. It breaks the flow of the game for me. Link Between Worlds is really the only time I felt that the stealth was done nicely. It wasn't too long or dragged out and it didn't really affect the flow of the game much.

Spoiler: Hylia theories, spoilers for the series
Some people have suggested Hylia might be the Goddess of Time mentioned in Majora's Mask. I guess I can see that being possible, since she's mentioned in relation to the Ocarina of Time, which you get from Zelda, and who's she related to?

Still, just a theory, as far as I know nothing's been confirmed.

Nah Volvagia was always a male, and well Hyrule Warriors is like Dyansty Warriors style so maybe that's why he has the Kain look? But then again it could be Volvagia's actual human form.

New Zelda looks like Twilight Princess Zelda, but lighter hair and clothes.
New Link is basically Twilight Princess Link, but again with lighter hair and not quite as... stiff as it was in TP.
Then again, I am glad they didn't make Zelda look like Skyward Zelda.

ARGH! Her hair! IT BURNS! Also her ears are too long (even compared to all the people with long ears in Skyward, hers seem extra long) and her nose looks so freaking bulbous from the front. How can anyone call this cute? Cute is, like, Ayane in Dead or Alive 5 in that red jacket with the white beanie.

Also, Skyward Zelda was so pointless to the game, they could've replaced her with a rock and it would've made no difference.

Also, did anyone else see Egoraptor's rant about Ocarina of Time? What do you think? Did the series make the right move by including more story elements?

OmG, will Egoraptor shut up about Skyward Sword already? Here's the deal. If you ever felt like you needed to dowse in Skyward Sword for anything, then you are the problem of the game. You suck at the game. Dowsing is a feature, yeah, I think it's a pointless feature in the game since it's kind of obvious where all the items are. Simple logic will tell you.

Yes, I say Skyward Sword was a pretty easy game. The easiest out of the Zelda games I've played to date and I think that's because, for the 25th Anniversary, they wanted to make a game that would work as a step-in for new players who may not have played previous Zelda games.

As for his complaint... what exactly is his complaint? The story? Well who cares about the Story, all Zelda games are not story-heavy, nor should they be. Zelda games are about the gameplay, not story, cause Zelda games are Action Adventure, not RPGs. It's still difficult to figure out his complaint because he keeps mixing it with things that technically don't have to do with the story, but with the gameplay. Having to help the Gorons by playing Saria's Song to their leader? Gameplay, not story.

Then again, I try to avoid people who think either Link to the Past or Ocarina of Time were the epitome of Best Zelda Game Ever or anything like that.

Another thing too from what I remember, the oracles aren't the goddesses. They're just oracles that are named after the goddesses. Weird thing, I think. So basically, while goddess Nayru is controls wisdom or whatever, oracle Nayru controls time. Two different entities.

New Hyrule Warriors trailer for Agitha... not sure how I feel about this one. The attacks are interesting, sure, but the way she fights seems so weird.

Like I said on another site, she's probably being included as some kind of joke character. And she'll probably end up being a lethal joke character at that.
Which is fine, minor Zelda characters need more love.

I had no doubt of that when I first saw the trailer. Her methods just seem off to me, and not by joke character standards. Single-target physical attacks in a Dynasty Warriors-style game don't really mix in my mind. Maybe it'll make sense in the game, but I guess I'll have to wait and see on that.

Even though Valga is a boss in the game I love how they brought a bit of Volvagia in the game.

Finished Wind Waker today, man what a fun game.

Spoiler: Wind Waker
Though I'm not really sure what happened to the King at the end. They go through that big deal where his spirit remains in old-Hyrule to be drowned. Then after the credits you see the King Of Red Lions uptop ready to sail. I can't remember MUCH of Phantom Hourglass but I know the King of Red Lions wasn't in that so I'm not really sure what happened to him. Is his spirit part of the boat? Is the boat JUST a boat now and it's been dispossessed? Answers on a postcard please.

Spoiler: The King
I could've mis-saw it, but aren't the KoRL's eyes completely blank and wooden in the ending? Basically, the way I understood it, the King's spirit left the boat and remained in Hyrule, with the boat just plain being a boat now.

S'what I thought might have been the case, I'm just trying to remember what happens at the start of Phantom Hourglass now that would have separated Link and the KoRL.

Easy, the boat couldn't talk and Link got bored with it. He went on to live his lifelong dream of abandoning his family and becoming a pirate because if Neko could be a pirate, anyone could.

In all seriousness, beats me.

Because the plot required Link to seek Linebeck's ship.
Actually, IIRC, there was another ship in Phantom Hourglass called the Prince of Red Lions, which looks just like the King. It's existence was never made clear, nor was it important to the plot.

Putting an escort mission RIGHT AFTER a silent realm. Granted the silent realms aren't hard, but putting two tedious stealth-like things back-to-back IN A ZELDA GAME. Why would you do this Skyward Sword? I want to hack and slash things, not play as an elfish Solid Snake.

What part are you at? It's been a while since I played Skyward Sword, so I'm having trouble trying to figure out where you are in the game.

I just beat the Fire Sanctuary, which is the 6th dungeon in the game. It was that whole section before where you had to get access to it. I had to get Scrapper (dude is a jerk) to carry a big basin of water to splash onto the giant frog face at the entrance to the dungeon so the fire would go out.

Ooohhh. Right, that thing. He's a reminder of one of the character types I generally don't like: Escort characters that act all high and mighty.
It's also why I wanted to punch Ruto in the face in OoT.

The Escort type isn't that bad... you know, as long as you have bows and all, you can snipe everyone before Scrapper is a moron and runs ahead. Only problem is at the end, when you fight two Lizalfos, they are too intelligent to get bombed and Scrapper won't stay the fuck on a ledge.

I've just never been a fan of escort missions in Zelda. Link's Awakening is an exception because Marin didn't need protecting, I could do what I want and she'd be fine. Why can't they just make them all like that?

The Windwaker ones were alright because the partners were actually useful.

Nuuuuuuuuuoh, if you don't have to protect you won't care about them and love them when they inevitably have something terrible happen to them, often right after use just escorted them through something! :ron: At least, that's what I think the game developer logic is.

Ehhhhhhhhhhhhh, yes and no. Medli had the problem with being rather... inflexible when it came to her holding the harp. And Makar... well, he was cute.

@Pierre: Because they aren't escorts. They're more like helpers, and I'm okay with that.

@Cat: But, but, the more I see Scrapper, the more I hate him. Protecting him just make me want to be the one to light a fire arrow under his butt. How come the Bokoblins can do it and I can't? It's not fair!

Also, who thought it was a good idea to force a fight with The Imprisioned twice in a thirty minute interval? Are they padding the end game here? I was having fun and then: NOPE! IMPRISONED!

At least I can happily say that I've yet to Game Over in a game where I thought I would, though it feels the bosses are getting easier as I go along. Except that part when I had to fly when fighting the parasite that infected The Wind Fish Levias. I have a hard time keeping the Wii Mote straight. Second part was way too easy though.
