What did people thyink of the Les Mierables musical movie I have seen the dvd versions of the 10th and 25th aniversy editions aswell as the movie.

I thought the movie was good, I don't why Russell Crowe gets all the hate I thought he sounded fine even compared to the others versions i have seen.

Amanda Seyfried was good but yikes very high pitched when hitting high notes

OverallI enjoy the film.

Granted bit too many close up shots ^^;

My History teacher recommended this movie to my class when we were studying French Revolution and the circumstances surrounding early modern europe in high school. Didn't see it and to be honest, not too much interested, since my friend told me all of the movie is just music and lacks dialogues.

Edit: Before someone points it out, I know it's a musical and music is, of course, the major attraction of a musical - however, most of them have minutes of normal dialogues now and then.

Massive fan of the stage one for years before it, and was very excited to see how a good director like Thomas Hooper would translate it to the screen (plus seeing it Dec. 25th was making up for me missing the tour when it came to Tampa). I know it's pretty old (and the movie out for years by now) but, seeing as there's new fans of stuff everyday I'll still put everything under spoilers.

Spoiler:
I enjoyed it. Hard to describe my feelings like, they started out mixed (though I'm not as harsh as others on performances by Crowe or Amanda Seyfried-I acknowledge them for who they are, and applauded Crowe's at least going for it-his voice didn't distract me away from the rest of it) and with multiple viewings my favorite parts became very apparent, and I became quite happy with the way some parts of one of my favorite musicals was immortalized on the silver screen. Colm Wilkinson as the Bishop, Anne Hathwaway's Fantine, Hadley Fraser as the soldier who kills Gavroche, everything to do with the ABC students. Very well captured and I think we'll look back on them as classic movie-musical-moments much the way we look back on "Somewhere over the Rainbow" now. Has the obsessive musical theater fan me imagined a big screen Les Miz differently? Duh, but I don't think it deserves the Star Wars Prequel Trilogy style hate some of my fellow MT pals gave it. ;-).

Also I feel like one of the few who was quite happy with Jackman.

It was good I felt, I don't mind if the actors aren't perfect singers it makes the characters marginally more real for me if they can't all sing beautifully.

I saw in three times in theaters, in three separate countries.

I initially didn't like Jackman as Valjean, but he's grown on me since then.

I'm not too fond of it - it was rather fun to watch, but I got pretty annoyed. I thought they were whispering instead of singing, and I want the music and the voices to be loud and powerful (my favourite recording is the symphonic one). I understand that people liked the gritty realism of this movie, but it wasn't quite for me, who want mighty music. Let it be known, though, that both the novel and the musical are great huge guilty pleasures to me (it's a damn soap opera... a beautifully written soap opera with rememberable characters + a soap opera turned musical... with gorgeous music... but still a damn soap opera), so I'm rather biased.
