I tried online racing. And I have to admit that it's fun to race against other players.

I'd love to race ya all, but not right now because of the weather.

It's the last stat on a kart way down on the bottom underneath handling.

The North American version calls it traction. According to the Mario Wiki, traction (or grip in your version) is "[t]he grasp of the vehicle. Vehicles with higher traction slip less on certain terrain and can stay stable on the road better. Not to be confused with handling."

I think the biggest difference is just how close and chaotic it can all get. Mario Circuit just after the race begins past the first weapon box? You'd be as well dropping to last place to wait till the carnage passes.

I've gone for a major change in the character I use. It is now...the one.....the only....Waluigi!

My main character in Mario Kart DS and a far heavier option. Hopefully, this will solve my problems of being pushed around too much. Though i'm still keeping the same vehicle combo.

Needless to say, Ima gonna weeeeen!

Wondering if any of you fine fellows would like a race sometime tomorrow (Monday 13th)

Thinking I'll dive on about sometime between 5-11pm (12pm-6pm EST) so just send me a message if you want to race then.

I'm usually on around that time anyway.

Well, the big Wa wasn't working for me. I find that heavier characters are harder to control. I've switched back to a lighter option with Toadette, who I believe is slightly heavier than Baby Peach.

I would, but I am in a room with my mom and sis while they're watching tv. Perhaps when I am home alone some time.

No, I was in third when it disconnected and had pretty much no chance to pass the racer in second before he/she (I forget the character) crossed the finish line. Unless you were that racer, you won that grand prix by two points.

Yeah though I need to step up my game.

I think I figured that "Grip" is the stat I was actually looking for and not "Handling". God knows what Handling does but I turn so much better with a high grip.

I honestly don't know the difference between the two. I've been experimenting with my build for Rosalina lately, going with high speed, low acceleration, and lowish traction. The only downside is the build really hurts me when I get pelted with lots of items or mess up a turn because it's really hard to come back, but it's a great build when I'm driving well.

Same here. I currently favor speed and handling at the expense of acceleration and traction, but if superior traction enables sharper turns when drifting, perhaps I should change my approach. Time to experiment, I guess.

Traction/Grip I'm pretty sure is the one that allows better drifts.

I switched to Bike (low handling to high handling and low grip) and I found that while the actual 'turn' initiated faster in a drift I didn't get much actual angle on the turn which means that I'd frequently bump into barriers on tighter turns though I could start the turn later.

However I was hoping it would STOP that from happening so when I switched back to a kart with a higher grip and low handling I think I found I got that tightness in the turns I was looking for, so I could hold the drift for longer and get a better angle off the turn.

Melody Motorway's big half turn pianos spell certain death for a bike as far as I could see but are adequate for a high traction/grip kart.

At this point I have no idea what Handling does, however I have noticed that sometimes when starting a race the initial boost of a foe behind me would be stronger than my own. Perhaps handling determines the effects and ease of mini-boosts?

When I can, I've been trying to time when is the most effective time to do my drifts. I've been learning that because of my setup, I usually need to do them earlier than when I'd usually anticipate. Surprisingly, today was the first time I did well on the MK8 Rainbow Road, as it's usually one of my weaker tracks. On the contrary though, I somehow didn't do so good on a couple of turns on Bowser's Castle, which I usually have no trouble with, so I don't know.

I ended up starting to hit walls towards the end of our playthrough that I usually don't hit, but I don't know if it had to do with me using a new setup I wasn't too familiar with on these tracks, or trying to talk to my mom and sis while trying to play.

I have been sticking with the Mach 8 for my body as it's a pretty speedy car, but I'm still trying to figure out what wheels to use. I've been trying to choose between something that optimizes speed and something that optimizes a more balanced car. The latter is more reliable, but the former has helped me to win more races when I've had good luck, so it's hard right now to find a favorite. I'm hoping as I get to play more, I'll find what works. I've only played online a few times prior to this, so seeing what works against humans and what works against computers is VERY different.

I do apologize for using the Wii U gamepad. I usually like to play with the nunchuck, but I've been having to use the Gamepad a lot because we only have one HD tv in our house and people are usually watching it.

By the way, I have a question. Do the coins you collect online go towards unlocking vehicle parts, or is that strictly done on local play only?

Why apologise for using the gamepad? It's the standard method of play for me.

Also I THINK they do unlock you things, I just don't think they make a song and dance about it. I swear when I went into modify my kart there were new parts about the place and they just hadn't been announced

Remember that free Mercedes-Benz DLC? There's a new trailer for it. It's coming out August 27th, and it's actually three cars:

Image

Image

Image

Still Japan-only as far as I know. The update that comes with it is definitely going worldwide though:

- A map will be added to the TV screen so you don't have to look at the gamepad

- The default selection when finishing a race will be changed to "Last Race", so you can click through faster

- Can now edit others' highlights

- Your last used character and kart customization will be added to your save so it'll be readily available the next time you go through the selection process

- A Records screen is being added to show your total coins, online win/loss record, character selection rates and more

- Online stability improved

All good updates, though I'm fairly certain that at this point I'm going to instinctively move the selection at the end of the race out of instinct...

Ooh didn't realise it was coming with an update, course I always use the map on the tablet but I feel it is a bit of an advantage considering other players on the couch can't really see it easily so it's pretty good I suppose.

Also as silly as the DLC looks, that Silver Arrow looks pretty classy. :kristoph:

These four improvements are things I really wanted. I've had to resort to looking behind me to see if there is anyone near, I can't get used to using the gamepad.

All I need now is the return of Birdo...

More upcoming DLC has apparently been leaked accidently by Nintendo's online UK store. Thankfully this time it's more Nintendo-centric stuff, but... well, just take a look:

Image

Image

A summary, in case the website goes down:

Mario Kart 8 Pack 1 is to be released in November 2014. It includes:

3 Characters: Tanooki Mario, Cat Peach, Link
4 Vehicles
8 Courses

Mario Kart 8 Pack 2 is to be released May 2015. It includes:

Pack 2 includes:

3 Characters: Villager, Isabelle, Dry Bowser
4 Vehicles
8 Courses

If you own both packs, you also get eight colored Yoshis and Shy Guys.

So excited for this. I hope this means that Mario Kart will one day expand into a Smash Bros.-esque game where stages, karts, and characters are based on more Nintendo franchises.

Oh wow...I guess it's the first step to the "Nintendo Kart" dream after all. Well if Sega is doing it...

Would totally play Link though...is it "new" tracks or more retro ones?

We know there's at least going to be an Animal Crossing-themed one, and more than likely at least one based in Hyrule and F-Zero.

This is probably used to test the market: if people will pay for these DLC's, we'll probably see Mario Kart 9 expand into full nintendo stuff. And then people will be frothing in the mouth over characters being included in that one, only for more metal characters. Except Samus and ROB, who become less metal. Somehow.
