Yes, and showing Palutena flaunting her ass was, what, the best way to demonstrate her getting ready for a fight? There are no pictures like these for the men, and having a photo of Zero Suit Samus wearing a bunny hood to make her look like a playboy bunny or whatever they're called, is just downright pathetic.

I'm not a social justice warrior complaining about every little thing that irks me and should bother everybody in the whole world ever, but I would've preferred it if Nintendo were a little bit more mature than their competitors when it came to portraying women in gaming. Besides, like I said, pictures like these always find their way on to the internet anyway.

That point was referring to why he included Robin over Chrom, not Lucina.

Quote:
I played all the way through FE:A and really wanted to include a character from that rich cast in Smash Bros. Naturally, I considered adding Chrom to the roster, but the decision wasn't easy by any means.
At the end of the day, Chrom would just end up being another plain-old sword-wielder like Marth and Ike. Compared with other characters, he lacks any unique characteristics.

Conversely, when the idea of including Robin came to mind, conceiving the character was so easy that I immediately saw how it would work. From standards to specials, grabs to throws, all aspects of his moveset just fell into place. Not only did he possess characteristics unlike other fighters, but he also captured the essence of the Fire Emblem series. It was perfect!

Yes, Lucina is "just another sword wielder" in comparison to Marth and Ike, but this context was clearly only about choosing between Chrom and Robin. Poorly worded, perhaps, but not a contradiction.

I get that he was comparing him to Robin but it still doesn't make sense to me surely he'd realise how bad it would look in hindsight.

Presumably if Chrom WAS included in he'd have a moveset different from both Marth and Ike (he's not as 'light' as Marth nor as 'heavy' as Ike) so it baffles me that they'd just include a character whose only difference is in where the damage on her sword is.

At least if he'd included Chrom over Lucina he could have avoided the clone issue.

Like...I'm not THAT bothered by Lucina being in there but when he says "didn't want another sword wielder" and goes with this it boggle the mind.

Doesn't matter if it's a sausagefest, that shouldn't even be an important factor of the game. Look at Dead or Alive. There are more men in the rooster than women, but the women are more well known than the guys. (Not just for the fanservice, which, as I said, seems to have toned down in DoA5)

Hehe. Yeah it still has fanservice, but hey, at least they made it equal on both sides. Finally, the men have bathing suit DLC costumes, too! But really, whether a game has more men or women doesn't and shouldn't matter in the least on its success. I don't recall Melee having all that many women to pick from either, so why is this one supposedly so important? It's like complaining that several of the playable characters in Hyrule Warriors, up to now, are women.

Even if it's a similar layout to Corneria (though mirrored), it would still be pretty different as the version of the Great Fox from Assault doesn't have the back section behind the fin like the 64 version used in previous Smash games. That would change up the strategy required significantly, to keep away from getting knocked off that side of the ship.

And given this stage is themed after Assault, we're likely to get some Assault-themed hazards as well. Maybe the Aparoid Queen shows up as a stage boss, or Star Wolf starts blasting the ship or something.

I hope so as well, though I really want them to do the same on Little Mac's stage using Doc Louis. They can have him pop up behind the ropes near the back of the ring and give Little Mac some pointers on beating his current opponents like in the Wii game.

It'd be a lot nicer if Krystal was playable then Fox's 2 clones. (At least Wolf had some noticeable differences, Falco was only good because his gun actually stuns the others.)

The Wily Castle stage has been revealed to be both a Wii U and 3DS stage:

Image

Sakurai says that while the shared stages will be nearly identical in functionality and layout, they will have some differences. In this case, the Wii U version of the stage takes place at night, while the 3DS version takes place during the daytime.

It's a bit disappointing to me, to be honest. I really like the stage and all, but I was hoping Mega Man would get a different stage for the 3DS version, much like Pac-Man did.

Well, she's been one of the most requested characters since Brawl, so it's definitely possible. She could easily have a unique moveset based around her staff, or her on-foot mode from Assault.

Falco was stronger than Fox, as his smash attacks did more damage (I think? Or was it the other way around?). He also had the throwable reflector, as well as an infinite hover for his final smash which made him a bit better than Fox in that regard. Wolf had many more differences, like the sweet spot of his blaster and the arching motions of some of his moves.

And while personally I preferred Fox and Wolf to Falco, I think that if Fire Emblem can get four representatives, surely Star Fox can have the same. Just change up their final smashes and it'll be fine... though given Zelda and Sheik still have the same one, that may not happen if they do return.

I'm confident that Falco's getting back in, he's been in since Melee, and has been preferred over Fox (at least with my friends). I just remember hearing they've strengthened Fox in SSB4, but I'm sure they'll add those 3 in (Krystal's probably too old yet not old enough of a character to be brought in, a lot of new characters are from games that came out after Brawl/classic icons. Gamecube isn't really 'classic' yet.)

Lucina, Robin, Greninja are all more recent than Gamecube.

Also Toon Link originated on the Gamecube and he made it in.

I think that was exactly the point. They are newer than the Gamecube; heck, they're newer than Brawl. And Toon Link is a returning character (that came out after Melee, IIRC).

It looks like Mijumaru's point was that if Krystal were going to be brought in, she'd have been in Brawl as well. At this point we can safely write her off.

I don't think we can come to that conclusion until the game comes out, honestly. Remember, Sakurai doesn't make his choices on how old/new the characters he chooses are; He's gone as recent as Rosalina and as far back as Game & Watch, after all. As I recall there was no precedence for Wolf to be included in Brawl, yet there he was, the last new character revealed and no new Star Fox game in sight at the time (and none on the Wii in its lifetime, even).

Lest we forget, there is a new Star Fox game currently in development. Seems all to convenient a reason to include a new SF character. Not that it's a guarantee, but there's definitely less reason to doubt it entirely.

Could I be bold to say that I think another reason for Toon Link's involvement is not just as a returning character, but the fact that he's also been in many games since Wind Waker? We've got Minish Cap, the two Four Swords games, the two 3DS games, and Wind Waker HD. He's been pretty prevalent in his appearances and I think the relevance is even more apparent with a stage dedicated to Spirit Tracks. Although Toon Link is a clone, considering how different some of his arsenal has varied in his games compared to the ones the realistic looking Link was in, I really wish they'd spice that up more. As far as having items, there really wasn't a difference between Boomerang and Gale Boomerang.

Personally, I've felt that if they brought Toon Link back, one item I wished they'd give him would be the Deku Leaf. I could see many uses for it. It'd be a great Up+B in air or could even be used as a knock back move. Granted, it's only wistful thinking on my part.

I really think they could spec Toon and *Real* Link out to be a bit different. Hell there's enough gadgets in there to justify them having different tools for their specials.

Though honestly I think pretty much all of Link's specials apart from his recovery suck.

Exactly, Because Pokemon 6th Gen, and Fire Emblem Awakening are recent (and popular) games that came out after Brawl, they've made it in SSB4. And Toon Link's back in due to him both being in Brawl, and from the Wind Waker HD on Wii U. They're going for 'new' characters (characters from games that came out after Brawl.) And hence, seeing as Krystal missed the boat with Brawl, and being in no recent Starfox games (the only one being Starfox 64 3D) it's unlikely she'll be in SSB4.

Rosalina's most likely in because of sheer popularity from being in Mario Kart Wii and SM3DWorld
Game and Watch has been in since Melee, when they had the opportunity to add in more characters, due to newer hardware. A lot of missed opportunities in SSB64 were made up for in Melee. (And even he's not officially confirmed yet according to the website)
Wolf did come out of left field, but it wasn't Starfox 64 Wolf (british wolf). I'm assuming it was the Wolf from all those DS Star Fox titles (I haven't played them, but they did come out after Melee).

If they do tease a new Starfox character from the Wii U game as a player in SSB4, i'd be really excited! :basil:

Honestly, what I'd like to see is for Realistic Link to go the more physical route while Toon Link go with the more magical item route. I know they haven't had a magic meter since Wind Waker, but what I'd like to see is a tweak to realistic Link's arsenal. Perhaps keep the arrows and bombs, and throw in a Megaton Hammer. For Toon Link, what I'd like to see is usage of the magic rods (or even elemental arrows ala Young Link from Melee if they must), the Deku Leaf for perhaps pushback, and maybe a wind rod for recovery. Just something different. Seriously, I think if they went for more than just making Toon Link quicker and lighter, I think if he specialized in one aspect while the other Link specialized in another, it'd make them less clone-ish and more unique.

Yeah that's exactly the kind of thing I was meaning, I mean there's customisable movesets sure but I don't think they differentiate enough to allow this.

Sakurai finally revealed the full 3DS-exclusive Tomodachi Life stage he's been teasing for months now:

Image

It works much like the Luigi's Mansion stage from Brawl, where the front walls of each room become transparent when a fighter walks into it. Each room is randomly selected from a pool of room types from match to match, so it's a different layout every time. Sakurai notes that a good tactic might be to hide a bomb in a solid room for unsuspecting opponents to run into.

Image

You may also find Miis in some of the apartments. They're taken from your 3DS data, so you might find some familiar faces speculating the match this way.

Toon Link represents much more than just Wind Waker, you know. His inclusion in Brawl, while more or less replacing Young Link from Melee in function, was designed character-wise to represent a separate timeline in the Zelda series than what Link and Young Link did. When Brawl came out this included Wind Waker, Minish Cap and the Four Swords games. Now this has expanded to those games and the others that have come out since then, like Phantom Hourglass and Spirit Tracks. Wind Waker HD likely wasn't even in development when Toon Link was chosen for Smash 4, or if it was it would've been too early to be a factor in his inclusion.

If Sakurai's claim of choosing characters at the start of game development is true, Rosalina was most likely included before 3D World was even close to release; he wouldn't have had time to make alternate moves for her otherwise. Besides that, her popularity originated from Super Mario Galaxy, as otherwise she wouldn't have been included in any of the other games in the first place.

As for Wolf, the design for him and the other Star Fox characters seen in Brawl, including those in the special hidden conversations in the Lylat Cruise stage, are taken from Star Fox: Assault. It should also be noted that while Krystal was in Assault, she had a more prominent role in Star Fox Command, which didn't have much (if any) representation in Brawl, while now Fox's look in SSB4 is based on Command.

We haven't seen any of the alternate moves for either Link or Toon Link yet as far as I know, so that's something of a wait-and-see scenario for the time being. I think it would be fairly realistic to think they would each get unique custom move sets, but we don't really have anything to base that off of right now.

EDIT: Nintendo added a bunch of new Wii U and 3DS screenshots today. Galleries courtesy of forum member L~A, who I haven't really seen on CR for a while but tends to post stuff like this over on NeoGAF.

Falco's my main in Brawl (mainly because of his speed and quick air recovery) so I want him to come back. And if they change his moveset, that would be nice. And give him a less crappier recovery than the other Star Fox players.

What's wrong with Fox an co's Up+B? I always felt it was a delightfully flexible move. Good for Offense and recovery.

For the first time ever, Sakurai reveals the main menu of the 3DS version:

Image

He doesn't go into much detail, aside from telling us the icons are animated and that the bottom screen has matching pictures and data for the mode you highlight:

Also, as far as I know this is the first time we've seen anything concerning streetpass for this game. It's on the main menu so it has to be something fairly important at least, especially considering it's right next to the Wii U connectivity icon.

Seems pretty standard though that Challenge Menu and the "Games and More" got me curious.

Also do we know what features benefit from Wii U connectivity? It's the first I've heard of it.

Couldn't you play a bunch of demos in Super Smash Bros. Brawl though? Maybe that's what it is. Either that or some trophy game.

Hm, maybe it could have something to do with transferring trophies and/or characters so you don't lose anything by switching to the Wii U?

The only part of the Wii U connectivity Sakurai has mentioned so far has been the ability to customize characters on the 3DS version in some fashion and then transferring those customizations to the Wii U version. I assumed up to this point that he was just talking about custom movesets, but the icon for connecting to the Wii U wouldn't have to be on the front screen for something you probably wouldn't do very oftenly. It's also been confirmed that you can't have battles between both versions either, so it definitely has to be something more important.

As for the Challenge menu, rampant speculation all around seems to be that it's going to be something like the challenge mode from Brawl, the wall of hidden trophies and music that had certain criteria you had to meet to unlock each one:

I'd be happy with this, I quite liked getting things for my achievements, beats Trophies (The Playstation kind) any day.

Are you implying that Falco needs additional buffs? That character has been top-tier since melee! Giving him great recovery would make him as broken as meta-knight.
